giants have an opportunity to make a statement tonight, don't they? >> reporter: they want to come away with two in a row on their home turf. i was concerned the high ticket prices might box out some of the true fans and make it a calm, stayed crowd, but i'll tell you what, they are loud, they are rowdy, and apparently, i didn't mean for that to happen. apparently they are plenty happy to come and support their team. i want to show you one of the unsung events in last night's ball game. it had to do with the giant's defense. they let it roll in a big way, and they all talk about the hitting last night, but tell you what, renteria with a beautiful play at shortstop, backed up with a nice play by uribe at third base. one of the unsung heros with

his glove was aubrey huff last night, making a sensational play on this ground ball. he gets kinzler at first base. those little key plays made all the difference in the 11-7 opening night win. let's hear from bruce bochy as he talks about the defense. >> these guys found a way to beat a good pitcher. sure, he probably wasn't on the top of his game, but give them credit of taking advantage of pitches they got to hit. we know we're not a team that can go out slugging with a lot of these teams. look at our runs scored, but the defense kept us in the game. >> reporter: i don't think it's possible, but the fans continue to get louder, even while bruce was talking we asked them to quiet down. we have some sense of normal

murder. investigators say he had no previous criminal record and showed no signs of aggression when he was arrested. in hayward, authorities say it's one of the strangest cases they've investigated. it involves the death of a teenage boy and the bizarre arrest of his brother. we have information about what led up to that arrest. live in hayward with our report. >> reporter: an autopsy was conducted today on that teenage boy, his brother remains in the hospital arrested for burglar. both were sophomores at hayward high. one woman saw the surviving brother break into her home. grief counselors are on campus as news of the teen's death and his brother's burglary arrest spread. >> young people tend to take grief in different ways. we want to make sure we have as many counselors available as

the students requested. >> reporter: authorities are still trying to determine how the 15 year old died after his body was discovered with stab wounds yesterday in this wooded ravine in alameda county. >> it's undetermined as of now whether this was a murder or a suicide and until we get that information, our investigation takes the same path. we investigate a murder or suicide the same way. >> reporter: authorities say his twin brother is still recovering from knife wounds in castro valley. he was arrested monday after authorities say he broke into this home and tried to set it on fire. the home owner didn't want to go on camera but showed us burn marks. she says the teen broke in through this window armed with a knife and had streaks of blood on his face and chased her before she escaped to a neighbor's to call for help: >> this is an unusual and complicated case. every door that opens, there's two doors behind that to open. >> reporter: the results of the

autopsy are expected to be released tomorrow. that could shed more light in the death of the teen. former bart police officer is due to be sentenced a week from tomorrow for the killing of oscar grant. yesterday, ktvu brought you a story from grant's family about the tragic and high-profile case. tonight at 10, rita williams will bring us the first interview since the shooting. rita is the only reporter to interview him. he will describe that night and what he says grant was doing. it's a story you'll see only on channel 2 tonight on the 10:00 news. with just a few days left before election day, the candidates for senate were out today stumping for votes. carly fiorina made her first

campaign trail. a new survey usa poll shows boxer currently with a 5 point lead over fiorina. dozens of farm workers and supporters rallied in san francisco today for jerry brown. the group supports brown for governor because they say brown supports the united farm workers. the latest poll shows latino voters favor brown over meg whitman. whitman made stops in northern california today. she is scheduled to meet with voters tonight in walnut creek. a group of bay area law enforcement officers voiced its opposition to proposition 19. the group argues the initiative is flawed and will put communities at risk, specifically when it comes to marijuana use and driving. >> under the flawed provisions

investors were cautious today as stocks ended virtually unchanged. the day started strong fueled on optimism jobless claims were down, but after that, stocks went up and down after investors remain cautious. here's a look at the final closing numbers. the dow was down 12 points while the nasdaq finished up a little more than 4 points. >> not christmas in july, but it's close. not even halloween yet. some retailers worried about sluggish sales and still slow economy are already putting up their holiday displays. consumer editor joins us live today from concord sun valley mall. >> reporter: people maybe going for it. take a look, this is the concord sun valley mall. there are few empty parking faces. that's the reality right now. dolling up these places early

just may work. this mall is seeing some real light at the approaching end of the recession tunnel. >> our sales have been up and we're also seeing the merchants come back and wanting space on a seasonal basis and permanent basis. we're very, very optimistic about the upcoming holiday. >> reporter: the mall has installed decoration and even car dealers are sponsoring the ice palace display this year. the mall manager says many folks now holiday shop early. >> they understand we must start in october to get it ready for the holiday season. >> i think the economy is getting back in line, not as bad and scary, it's kind of plateaued. people are feeling a little more comfortable spending money and feeling things maybe getting better. >> reporter: a new consumer report survey says 60% will spend as much or more than last year. >> probably spend more, i have

2006. >> i'm very proud of the improvements we've made over the years to enhance port security. today we're celebrating another great step in protecting our port for the region and our nation. >> port officials consulted with truckers, workers, and law enforcement officials in formlating this program. nasa wants to send astronauts to mars, but there's a catch, they won't be able to come back to earth. nasa revealed this that they received $1 million to start working at the project. they think they could send a team of astronauts by 2030. nasa says it would be too costly to bring the astronauts back, saying they would receive regular supplies from earth. >> who's going to sign up for something like that? >> i can't imagine: let's talk about our weather now, it's crucial. game two about to start. you've been looking at your maps and what not. what's it looking like in terms

from and why they were buried there. department of public works is trying to catch the person illegally dumping roofing materials. the latest incident happened yesterday morning. this video comes from a similar dumping incident on donar avenue on sunday. crews cleaned up 4-5-truckloads there. dpw is offering a reward for information that helps them successfully prosecute whoever is doing this dumping. what he's majoring in a bet when it comes to the outcome of the world series. speaking of which, back out to the live parks in a second. we are minutes away from the first pitch in game two of the world series. that when we come back.
