good morning. the giants now halfway to winning the world series as they fly off to texas today. why some fans hope they will lose a game. overnight police shut down a portion of highway 4 bypass after a truck launched off the roadway. where and how it landed prompted a major response. a split forecast for today. for some cloudy and for some rain. that rain is greeting friday commuters. we are all over the bay area czeching hot spot -- we are all over the bay area checking hot spots. we'll have more on that later.

good morning thank you for joining us on this friday october 29th i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. >> thank you very much. happy friday everybody. cloudy south bay parts of the east bay and for others some rain and for others a steady rain. from pacifica sfo north. south of that it's orphan clouds effect. there are breaks in the clouds. that will be the forecast today. if you're north rain moderate to heavy. for others cool and cloudy. northbound 101 san francisco looks good. it's getting a little bit better in san francisco. we've had a lot of fender benders because of the weather. now let's move along and take a look at bay bridge toll propyla say. getting a little backup. let's go back to the desk.

the red hot giants will be leaving for texas in couple of hours. they are halfway to the world championships since moving to san francisco since 1958. kraig debro is joining us. there is barricades going up as we speak. >> reporter: they are around back of the barricades. a long boring story i will tell you about that. 1958 the giants moved here and four years later they are in the world series. football is said to be a game of inches. according to what happened baseball could also be a game in inch. >> a fly ball into centerfield. well hit. at the wall. this ball hits the top of the wall. >> reporter: if ian would have hit that ball a couple of more inches the rangers would have had a run. instead, matt cain pitched around that double and ian kinsler didn't score and the

rangers didn't score for the rest of the night. look at what happened to ed guard renteria the bottom of the first. >> the 0-1 pitch. renteria slaps one down the right. >> reporter: he cleared the fence more than a few inches. ed guard renteria hits one out. 1-0 giants. they never look back. juan uribe made it 2-0 a couple of innings later. they went running away with the game from beyond that point. one of the guys that contributed in the eighth inning was aaron rhone. he was a high press free agent. he got here a couple of years ago he hasn't performed. he's been staying prepared. i guess he couldn't complain he's not playing. he has not complained. he told us last night that despite the fact they are up 2- 0 in this world series texas rangers they won the american league championship so they must be a very good team too.

>> you don't change anything. you are not changing any mind set how you approach the first game or the second game or going into the third game. you know, there is a reason that the texas rangers are playing the world series too. they are a very good team. you've got to keep your foot on the throttle and keep pushing forward. >> reporter: you're not going to be able to tell that to the fans. everybody has high expectations now. they were high when the they got to the world series. now they are ahead 2-0 expectations are ahead even higher. people have to forget about the last game where they didn't do so well. they have to forget about the error they made the last inning. that way they can concentrate better. that's what texas rangers will be doing. they will be going to the home ballpark being in their own beds. that could feel a little bit better. the game tomorrow night will be

an early start. 3:30. the rangers and giants play tomorrow night and saturday night may be a different story. we hope it's the same result as last night. kraig debro. >> our ktvu news crew captured the crazy scene in the left field stands. they are having some fun. the entire stadium rocked with excitement following san francisco second straight victory. many fans began chanting sweet confidence the giants will win the next two games. others hope the giants will lose so they can win the title back home in san francisco. the giants fly to texas this morning for game three of the world series. they are expected to leave at & t park about 9:00 a.m.. the giants will arrive in texas early this afternoon and they will then work out at the ballpark in arlington e texas early this evening.

just a reminder you can watch game three of the world series right here where you are on ktvu channel 2 fox coverage begins at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon. just a short time ago the highway 4 bypass between brentwood was reopened that's after being shut down for six hours overnight because of a fatal accident. a pickup truck flipped off the roadway between loan tree way and san creek road. the pickup truck landed upside down in a creek and burst into flames. firefighters used a ladder to get down to the wreckage. police shut down the bypass to investigate the accident. it did reopen just after 5:30 this morning. 6:06. on this friday morning because we have rain in some areas there is problems with the roads this morning. jade hernandez is in san francisco where there are reports of flooding out there. right? >> reporter: that is right. we spoke to a caltran worker a

few moments ago. he told me there were plenty of accidents earl think this morning. but the accidents have slowed up a little. about an hour and a half ago we stopped to talk to a cab by involved in an accident on southbound 280 near 101. he showed us the water caught in his cab. he told usth semi drove past him and threw water on his windshield. he tried to slow down and the cab driver told us the chp officer slammed right into him. when he stopped the water flooding on the freeway came into his cab. fortunately no one was hurt. >> think should close the road before they hit the road. it's kind of dangerous. when i was driving on the left lane, a big truck was driving parallel to me. the water spill all to the

windshield. i couldn't see anything. i tried to make a stop carefully. >> reporter: flooding isn't the only problem for commuters and drivers this morning. we have pictures of this tree down at 18th and arkansas here in san francisco. it was blocking the road and that tree almost hit a car when it fell. as i mentioned earlier this morning we're live along 101 this morning. we're monitoring traffic. sal, how does it look? >> it looks good out there. the activity in san francisco has slowed down a little bit. in fact, let's take a look at our san francisco camera. it looks pretty good coming into the downtown area along northbound 101. it's not raining there anymore. on the peninsula highway 101 and 280 also improving as the rain moves through. we don't have accidents or stalls reported here. the traffic is moderate if you're driving to the south

bay. slowing in the northbound direction. let's take a look at 280 now. it's light there on the map. it's light here in the live picture along the downtown area. looking good. getting up to highway 280. 608 here is steve. thank you very much. south bay partly cloudy to mostly cloudy. half-moon bay you are getting rain. walnut creek, oakland, fairfield north, south of that east of that not much. there is a heavy duty ban right there. comings between point rays. so you folk there is that will pick up the rain intensity. they might be light. it will go moderate to heavy. san francisco .45.

62 santa rosa. a lot of 60s and rain. steady rain in the north bay. clouds, showers. decreasing sunday, monday, and tuesday. looking warmer. in a ktvu exclusive we're going to let you hear from former bart police officer johannes mehserle for the first time. he will be sentenced for the shooting death of oscar grant. he agreed to sit down inside the jail with rita williams and share his story. >> reporter: some people will say it's for sympathy. >> this is more for the public to see who i am. i'm not asking for any sympathy at all. >> coming up in just about 20 minutes from right now you will hear mehserle talk about what happened that fateful morning of the shooting. new numbers on the u.s. economy. they show growth at a slightly faster pace over the summer. as predicted the economy expanded in an annual rate of

2%. why that is up slightly in the previous quarter it is still down from the beginning of this year. it shows consumers boosted spending for the biggest quarterly increase since 2006 which was before the recession hit. right now the markets are responding negatively. the holiday shopping season is getting started earlier this year. it's been looking a lot like christmas lately. for example look at the sun valley mall in concord. given the state of the economy stores are not waiting for black friday the day after thanks giving. verizon made big money on mystery fees. now it's pay back time. the federal communication commission announced the settlement that will refund $50 million to customers and send an additional $25 million to the u.s. treasury. verizon imposed unexplained charges. the mystery fees were on pay as

there are a couple of sad side bars to this years world series. jose gian is not on the playoff roster. first they said that was because of a health problem. now we hear it may be because of very serious drug allegations. the new york time reports investigators are closely looking at shipments of human growth hormones. agents say those drugs were sent to his wife here in the bay area. also some fans thought they bought world series tickets never made it into the ballpark. instead, they were ripped off. victims of scam artists. police say there are seven reports of people buying tickets from private sellers on line only to be turned away when they showed up at the game. some of the people paid as much as $1,000 for those bogus tickets. five days left before election day democrats hope a rally in washington, d.c. tomorrow will help give them a

good morning. right now traffic is okay on the bay area bridges. bay bridge san mateo, golden gate, and the western bridge. i want to throw in the dunn barton bridge. it looks like the rain is not a problem on the bridges for the time being. let's go back to the desk. thanks. still october. time for halloween and apparently for skiing. boria will be the first tahoe ski resort to hope this year. they plan to have one lift chair operating today. and hopefully a second one by the ebb of the day. we hear from johannes mehserle for the first time. he sat down with rita williams in the los angeles jail where he is awaiting sentencing one week from today. in july a jury convicted mehserle of involuntary manslaughter. mehserle says he thinks the jurors got it wrong. he's been portrayed differently

from who he really is. >> reporter: some people see you as a racist. are you? >> no, ma'am. >> reporter: a cold-blooded killer? >> no, ma'am. i'm peaceful by my own nature. >> that is not the image some have after watching cell phone video. it shows mehserle firing a single shot into oscar grant's back as grant lay face down on a platform at the fruit vail bart station. >> reporter: how do you live with that? >> i know it wasn't intentional. you know it wasn't about the decision i made wasn't to shoot him. i know that. >> mehserle says when he realized he had shot grant with his gun he was in disbelief. he said he tried to calm grant down and apply pressure to the

marks left in his home. the teenager broke in through a window, he chased her but she managed to escape. a bay area nurse who was attacked by an inmate while working at the contra casita county jail has died from her injuries. newly admitted inmate attacked cynthia palomata with a lamp after he faked having a seizure in the jail intake area. palomata under went injuries to his head. the inmate that attacked palomata is now facing a murder charge. her death follows the killing of another health care worker at napa state hospital last saturday. the california nurses association is calling for new legislation to improve workplace safety. fremont base lodge tech is teaming up with san jose police department to fight crime.

they are launching a new service. it's designed to help residents report suspicious activity better. they are combining their home surveillance videos that people can monitor on line with neighborhood central which connects residents to area watch groups. san jose is one of the first cities in the country to try out this new system and they plan to expand it nationwide. today a teenager from tracy is scheduled to testify against a man that is accused of torturing him as he was held captive for more than a year. anthony waiters is charged with false imprisonment and torture. he lived nearby the house. three people that have lived in that house pled guilty to beat, burning, and starving him. people in san francisco want to remind you there will be no halloween celebration in the castro district this

weekend. bars and restaurants will be open for business. there will not be a big street party. the city banned them in 2006 after several people were shot. we can find a link for halloween events for both children and adults throughout the bay area. when your channel 2 website ktvu.com. tuesday election many bay area cities are pushing ballot measures aimed at helping out their dwindling budgets. nearly every stay in the bay area has a measure on the ballot with some kind of tax or fee to try and get some cash to pay for basic services. san francisco wants to raise its hotel tax to 15%. half-moon bay is asking for 1% tax sales increase. wants to increase its sales tax. every city is asking voters to improve a special tax. have some rain throughout the bay area. today's wet weather could be a challenge for those waiting to catch muni buses.

dallas fans. we want to let you listen to some of the fans we talked to this morning that are rangers fans. they were pretty optimistic how game three will go. when it comes to what we have to say about the giants fans. the texas fans say the partying and celebration after the game last night was certainly something to see. >> came for the game. first time the world series for the rangers and we love them. we still love them. >> was it hard to watch? >> no. well, yeah. [ laughter ] >> we had a good time. it was so historical for the rangers to be in the world series. but it was a lot of fun. we enjoyed the city. we've done a lot. we really enjoy it. >> reporter: and they do say that the fans are really good to them especially the ones that were sitting near and didn't get some good nature but other than that they said everything was great. we do know the orange and black will be represented over in

texas. we did find giants fans that are heading out there. we found some local folks and people that came all the way from mexico to see the games here in san francisco and hopping on a plane to go to texas to see game three and maybe the next few after that. coming up on mornings on 2:00 you'll hear from some of the giant fans. we'll call them the lucky ones. the ones that have really great seats. live here at sfo claudine wong. >> nice. we'll see you then. fema has once again denied federal disaster aid to victims of the san bruno pipeline explosion. standing by its original statement that state and local officials were not overwhelmed by the disaster. people that were involved in the blast got much needed information about insurance. they hosted an insurance recovery forrum to answer questions about how insurance claims will proceed. san bruno residents displaced by the deadly pipeline explosion are getting

a break on their utility bills. the state public utilities commission has improved to pay the bills until 2012. it applies to everyone who's home was destroyed or left uninhabitable by the blast. the commission has also taken up the issue of pipeline pressure. as a result the puc had reduced gas flow in pipelines along the peninsula by 20%. now it's agreed to restore that pressure if temperatures get extremely low. the puc warns if the pressure is not increased during the cold weather months when demand is at its peak larger customers could lose service. a panel would have to improve the increase in pressure. some muni workers may get a chance to go to the world series games for free. the giants gave a couple dozen tickets to newspaper any for workers that keep the traffic moving outside the stadium.

when it came time distributing the 30 tickets offered for the world series games. some executives thought it would go to the executive staff and the governing board. when the word got out about it they canceled that idea and made sure the tickets went to the muni workers. >> 6:48 is the time. let's check in with sal. how is the commute? >> it's okay. it's improved a little bit. this morning after the rain stopped. and steve put it really well. when it's raining it's not good traffic. that's exactly what has been happening. let's look at 237. we're get into the valley now. also this morning commute has been slow and there is an accident west 80 and 680. watch for slow traffic in that area. this morning's drive will be slow. a ten minute wait. here is steve. >> thank you very much. it is true.
