we join david stevenson >> reporter: it's a warm afternoon at san francisco civic center plaza it's perfect for watching the game on big screen tv. there are several hundred people in orange and black gathered here for game 5 of the series. they brought their blankets their beach chairs to sit out under the skies and cheer the giants on. let's take another look from news chopper 2 live overhead above the plaza. the game is being broadcast on a 17-foot wide screen courtesy of the city and county of san francisco. it cost an estimated $30,000 to set up the equipment and host this viewing party. money the mayor's office tells us is pg paid for in private funds. some folks arrived out here as early as 1:00 to get the best seats for the game. it is a furlough day for san francisco schools and that meant a number of parents brought their kids here to after. city leaders say it's men to be a family event alcohol free and

g rated. the giants fans said it was more fun to come to a public park than in their own homes s we came here for the world cup and it has an arts you can't create at home even if you have a lot of people there. and we're also season ticket holders we're used to the atmosphere of the cheering. i've brought my pom poms and rally flags and i want to be with a group of people to celebrate. >> this is san francisco. this is what we do when there's an earthquake we have a party here. with we're about to beat texas we have a party here. that's what we're doing now and that's why we're here. >> reporter: take a look takes at these pictures adjacent to the big screen tv crews are hard at work constructing bleachers for giants victory parade and celebration. the mayor's office is being closed mouth about what path that parade might take. but if the giants win here tonight the celebration will take place on wednesday. in the meantime our ktvu ken pritchett is live to tell us

what it's like. ken. >> reporter: it certainly feels like the fall classic at the ballpark in arlington. it is a little cooler little breeze breezy ier than yesterday. the fans continue to enter the ballpark. they have been going in for about an hour now. we shot some video a short time ago. these are the members of the giants team as they arrived at the ballpark here in arlington about 2 hours ago. of course what could be the final game in this series. at the same time the team was arriving the fans were lined up outside the gates eager for game 5 to begin. it was mostly a sea of red and white as you would imagine. but there was some black and orange sprinkled in. giants fans excited in the prospect of closing it out tonight. most of them happy simply to be at a world series game. >> it's awesome.

a half an hour from now at 4:30. protestors on both sides of a controversial immigration law descended on san francisco today as a panel of of judges considered the legal provisions at the very crux of the debate. rob roth live in san francisco with our report. what's next? >> reporter: the demonstrations for and against arizona's immigration law have quieted here at the federal appeals court. a three judge panel will now decide whether key provisions of the controversial law can go into effect. dozens of bay area residents opposed to arizona's tough immigration law marched several blocks to the courthouse. there they were met by dozens of people in favor of it. >> arizona is just trying to enforce the laws that our federal government is not enforcing. >> my parents were immigrants. i was born here but everyone deserves a right to be here. >> reporter: inside the courtroom a three judge panel of the ninth circuit court of appeals grilled the attorneys during an hour long hearing.

at issue is whether arizona should be allowed to enforce all or some of the provisions in its tough immigration law. >> there's no reason why arizona should stand by and suffer the consequences of a broken system. >> reporter: among the provisions arizona wants to enforce is to allow police to check the immigration status of those they suspect are in the country illegal and require legal immigrants to carry immigration papers. the federal law argues it encroach on federal jurisdiction. >> we believe the provision is unconstitutional. >> reporter: among those attending the hearing was arizona governor jan brewer. >> residents and citizens of the arizona cannot sustain what illegal immigration is doing to our state in regards to healthcare, education and incarceration. >> reporter: opponents worry the law will lead to racial profiling. >> we're picking out people because of the color of their

skin. >> reporter: a ruling by the panel is expected by the end of the year, but the cases likely to be appealed further no matter what the decision. reporting live in san francisco rob roth ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police say a 3-year-old girl was one of three victims in a shooting attack that happened on halloween at 25th and connecticut streets in san francisco potrero hill neighborhood. the toddler and her 52-year-old grandfather were returning from trick-or-treating when they were wounded. a police spokeswoman said the girl and grandfather suffered nonlife-threatening injuries. the gunman's target was a 20- year-old man who was critically wounded. a $45,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the conviction of a gunman who shot 9 people at a halloween party in oakland. it happened early yesterday morning at suites balance room on broad bay during a party called the fright fence. about 600 people were there when someone started shooting. millions say a man was shot in the back was the target and the other victims were hit by stray

bullets. none telephone injuries is considered life-threatening. the san mateo county sheriff's department officially took over the san carlos police department. the sheriff says san carlos residents won't see much of a difference. >> as you can see the cars look very similar. they have sheriff's office star on it but it still says city of san carlos. the uniforms are very similar. we'll be wearing our uniforms but look very much like san carlos officers half the people will be former san carlos officers. >> the san carlos recently vent voted to disban their police force. we are now in the home stretch final hours leading up to this very important midterm election. with the polls opening in just about 15 hours candidates spent this day trying to get people out to vote. robert handa live in san jose with a desperate last minute push. >> report: we're at one of

the ballot drop off areas in san jose where tea party supporters and democrat supporters are trying to convince people to cast their vote. customers at the flames restaurant in san jose got some campaigning with their meal this afternoon as lieutenant governor candidate able mal don add 0 came to their dining booth to make sure they went to the voting booth. >> i mike the way he stands up to the old time republicans. >> front burner is the economy economy and jobs and jobs. >> reporter: mal don add 0 go it a friendly reception but earlier in san francisco his rally on the steps of city hall was disrupt bid supporters of his opponent gavin newsom. but the republican candidate said it's all part of the final 24 hour push. >> i started in san diego in my buster went all the way to redding california i'm working my way down i'm asking the people of california to get out and vote. >> it's all about voter outreach if you're the last one to touch that voter that's the key to the game. >> reporter: that seemed to be

the philosophy of the day. there was no let up. barbara boxer carly fiorina meeting whitman jerry brown all made the rounds. volunteers manned a large phone bank making sure supporters actually vote and trying to sway independents and the undecided. >> now we are making an effort to get those voters to go to the polls and cast their ballots. >> back in 08 with president obama on the ballot it really got a young people, you know, inspired to get out there and participate in the democratic process. we hope that will carry over this year. >> reporter: a new york times study shows a big drop in student involvement and young voters on bay area college campuses. there were some get out the vote event, but many students we talked to said this year's election didn't fit their schedule or interest. >> i've been trying to get into the groove of school this year i've been more kind of i need to do my school work and not focus on the voting. >> obama that was a really strong election and everybody wanted to see you know like him

being our first president and et cetera, but this year it's just kind of like it's not the same. >> reporter: and over coming that apathy of course is the goal and so far we have seen a pretty steady stream of voters coming up to this drive up ballot area. as you can see right there. and we'll see how the pace goes tomorrow. live in san jose robert handa ktvu channel 2 news. we have much more on tomorrow's election at ktvu.com. once you're there click on the politics tab you'll find more about issues on your local ballot and information to help you find your polling place. investigators in san jose are trying to determine whether a suspicious fire this morning is linked to several others in the same area. flames broke out in the 1,000 block of north 10th street at 2:30 this morning. it comes after a dozen smaller suspicious fires within the last week on the same street. a fire captain says crews arrived to the scene to find flames shooting 20 to 40 feet into the air and as the fire quickly grew to four alarms.

>> the fire was reports todd the rear of the building. both buildings are destroyed. >> those destroyed businesses are recycling company called san jose metals and bar called the elsa very club. the damage is estimated at about $2 million. chp officer shot and killed a bull running loose on highway 4 in pittsburgh. he escaped from a pittsburgh ranch and jumped a series of obstacles before becoming trapped between a sound wall and retaining wall on westbound highway 4 near the bailey road exit. animal control officers feared a tranquilizer wouldn't work quickly enough. they decided to kill this animal to protect the public. coming up here why the trial for those three uc berkeley graduates held in iran has been postponed. another live look at san francisco's civic center plaza where you can see hundreds and hundreds of people are already gathered now to watch tonight's game 5 of the world series.

answer questions today about whether he had a sexual relationship with her. prosecutors charged ingmar guandique with her killing. he is on trial for attempted sexual assault and murder. wall street trading was light as investors waited for two big events. the republican win in tomorrow's congressional elections could lead to fewer corporate regulations. it will buy more bonds to simulate the economy. the dow jones closed up by 6 points. nasdaq closed down by 2. insurance giant aig has come up with the money to pay back the loan. it raised $37 billion for the sale of two foreign insurance units. those sales will be added to previous money the company raised to repay $100 billion in taxpayer funds that aig received during the financial crisis. back to the world series it has been a long, long time since the giants won the world

. the minnesota vikings have reportedly dropped former oakland raiders receiver randy moss from the team. the vikings acquired moss earlier this year from the new england patriots. moss had only one catch yesterday the vikings lost to the patriots. after the gamey praised the patriots and criticized the vikings coaches. then today at a team meeting players say head coach brad childress told them that moss had been put on waivers. in just half an hour the giant and rangers ace he will be facing off in game 5 telephone world series. >> tim lincecum for the giants cliff lee starting for the texas rangers. fred has more on this. >> reporter: hi frank. it's a little cooler tonight. ist just coming down up here from the ballpark down to watch the batting practice. they look relaxed, they look ready to go. the giants ready to finish off the texas rangers, and i think

the entire state of texas now understands the giants pitching staff is pretty dog gone good after an 8 in inning three hit shut out by madison bum garner. tim lincecum will repeat that act. he gave up four runs four plus innings in game one, a game the giants still won 11-7. that's because the rangers ace cliff lee gave up 6 earned runs in four plus innings. he was not at all his usual self. he came in 7-0 in post season before that. but now cliff lee has a newfound respect for the giants. >> in the last press conference i was saying how good their pitching staff was made it seem like their hitters are not good that's not the case. i'm just saying their pitching and defers is what got them where they are at. they scored was it 20 something runs in two games. i mean, they know what they are doing with the bat. the more pitches they see the better they get.

it's the kind of line up that is. >> knowing you're pitching another world series game eases the tension there. i just try to approach it try to keep my nerves together and keep poised. >> reporter: giants have thrown 2 shutouts in those first four games. but perhaps tonight we'll finally get that pitchers duel that we expected in game one. defense certainly be a big part of it again just like it was last night when second baseman freddy sanchez flashed his leather so many different times. the giants are winning every statistical category including the most important one leading 3 games to one. one note here too folks. pat burrell back in the line up he will be the designated hitter batting 7th. aaron rowan will play center field with andres torres moving over to right field. but right now like i said, the giants i saw them in the batting practice they looked relaxed they looked ready to go. they know what this game means because it is the final chapter to the history of san francisco
