championship. >> joe: the guy on your screen, tim lincecum, becomes the fifth pitcher in world series history with ten or more strikeouts in a clinching game, and the first one to do it, as he gets the win here tonight, since bob gibson in 1967. the last swing. this group of san francisco giants, a team that was worked on all season long, added to at the trading deadline, added to at the end of august, came together, and they won it all.

series. how does all that sound? >> i don't know, what can you say? i mean, it's -- i mean, this is the ultimate high in baseball. i got to experience it my first year here. i don't know what to say. >> ken: tim lincecum tonight, how much better was he than he's ever been before? >> you know what? the guy was on -- you could see it in the first inning. he had late action on the fastball, and he had that confidence. he had that demeanor about him. i mean, he was good all the way through. cruz hit a pretty good pitch out and he bounced back and got us right back in. he probably could have finished it up but we have to go to wilson there. >> ken: finally, edgar renteria, what can you say about him? >> oh, my gosh. this guy hasn't played, probably sat on the bench for what, four months out of the year maybe? and hits two clutch, clutch home runs and is going out on top. hits a three run homer

to win the last game for us. i'm so happy for him. congratulation s. >> joe: what an impressive young man. 23 years old. if you think about tim lincecum, he set the tone in game one of the division series, striking out 14. that was against atlanta. he bookends it with a game here in game 5, the clincher of the world series. from the ground, from the air, and the celebration from a couple thousand miles away in san francisco as they celebrate at civic center plaza. the guys on the other side of the break are just getting started with a celebration for the giants here in arlington.

[applause]. >> mr. neukom, to win it as a franchise for the first time since 1954, something very important, but you are a guy who grew up in northern california. what does it mean to finally bring the hardware to san francisco? >> it's a great thing for the franchise, for the city of san francisco, for all of our fans and the community in northern california. we stood on the backs of giants ahead of us that got us here, and we had a terrific time. congratulations to the texas rangers, who have a proud franchise. with all their distractions this year they played outstanding baseball, a hard-fought baseball. we managed to get the better of it. we are humbled about that. we are proud of what we have done. and i can't say enough about the work of our general manager, brian sabean, who built this team from spring training and added to

i can't imagine who is going through your heart and your head right now. >> well, everybody is talking about '62 and '89, 2002. this group deserved it. it was fateful from the beginning, the start of spring training. it was a community effort. the front office, and scouting, and bochy's staff did as good a job in baseball since i've seen the game, and i've been in the game a while. we are humbled by the achievement and to bring we will bring the trophy home to san francisco is really amazing. >> chris: brian, congratulations. bruce bochy, manager of the giants. not bad for a bunch of cast offs and misfits. >> yeah, they did all right. i couldn't be prouder of the group. it goes to show what a team can do when they play with heart and determinatio i mean, they weren't going to be denied. they did it for each other and the fans. and i want to thank my staff, and how hard they worked. and the players, how they accepted their roles and that was a

>> chris: edgar, for what you went through this year, you ended up on the d. l. three times, almost four, courtesy of your manager, bruce bochy, it was a trying year for you. but to come up with the huge hits that did you in the world series, how satisfying is this for you? >> yeah, it was a tough year for me. i appreciate all the patience because they had patience with they. they give me a chance to play in the playoff games. everyone go well. i don't know, that's one thing i don't know. i see the boys -- >> chris: it's obviously emotional for you. was there a point at this year that you thought maybe you wouldn't get a chance to shine on a major league field again? >> yeah, yeah. it was a tough year for me. but i told myself to keep working, work

hard. and keep in shape because something is going to be good for this year for you. and i believe in my team, i believe in the pitcher. and everything go well >> chris: you are the fourth player to have a game-winning rbi in two different world series clinching games. dimaggio, yogi berra, and now edgar renteria. that's amazing to be part of, isn't it? >> yeah, it is. i feel proud of myself, i feel proud for my teammates. >> chris: you are 35 now, upper 22 when you won it back in 1997. a lot has transpired in those 13 years. are you walking away a winner or do you want to give this another shot, my friend? >> i don't know. i will think about it and see what happens congratulati ons. enjoy the mvp trophy

season. these guys gave me a chance and thank god they did. >> upper a bunch of castoffs and misfits and you kind of adopted that whole theme. you might have been the president of that club. did you not have a job until mid-january. this is a guy who had been a productive player, you are stuck in this lineup, and you really carried it throughout the year and kind of championed the cause. >> you have to credit sabean. he got a bunch of old school guys, started with me and picked up pat burrell, who picked up big homers late for us. and cody ross. it goes on and on. every time you go through the locker room, you can go to each locker and any night it can be anybody. edgar renteria tonight. unbelievable. amazing story. two big world series hits in his career. i just can't be happier for the guy. >> you waited 11 years. go celebrate. >> thanks congratulati ons. and fear the beard! it's the middle of the interview process but we are going to bring in the closer, brian wilson. you can hold this. hey, upper a big part of this.

yeah. i mean, to finish a world series game and bring the city of san francisco it's first baseball championship, what does that feel like? >> oh, my goodness. it feels amazing. to lead up to this moment, good gosh. what a battle. and for the fans to come out in october and just go absolutely nuts, that was our postseason right there. rally towels, beards everywhere, tim's hair. world championship hair >> chris: you can come in here too. we can have a beard and hair at the same time. that's fine. >> for the fans. this one was for the greats of san francisco that played there before us. and obviously for us, there's a lot of guys in that room right now that nailed it all season, including edgar renteria, which i hope he won the mvp because -- >> chris: yeah, he did. back in july you told me that you had the best team around and there were some people

that probably didn't believe you. sorry? >> skeptic? >> chris: i am not a skeptic. i am saying at the time some people said maybe you weren't the best. what made you the best the last four months of the year? >> persistence. from the starting pitchers to pound the strike zone, get ahead and their work ethic. every guy in the clubhouse gets here as a specific time, they have their routine. no matter how hard they work, they still get down and they nail down their workouts. and we just had a bunch of team effort guys pulling up late in beginning situations and getting two-out hits and coming in and striking out the lefty. everybody made a huge contribution this year. congratulation s. >> thank you >> chris: all right. tim lincecum. go ahead. hang on to that. how is it that look? >> shiny. >> chris: obvious. that's nice. after game 1 you said that you could be better, that you

learned something about your game 1 experience. you are flat-outcome than the. what was the difference for you tonight? >> we wanted to just nail it down here. that was the big thing. you know, coming in here. you know, kind of shutting them up. doing what we can, just playing good defense. you know, getting runs and manufacturing a good ball, i guess >> chris: when you went into the phillies series you heard that halladay and hammels and oswalt were going to be better than the giants. they weren't. then you get down here and you have to deal with the best hitting team in baseball. you shut them down to a collective .190 average. your starting staff was top-notch. >> i can't say enough about the guys coming in in the big games, stepping up and doing their thing. none of us had really been here before so it's a new thing for all of us. and for guys to step up and just stay poised, collective, and give us a chance to win in every single game we've been in since the postseason started. i feel a lot about our guys >> chris: on a personal note you beat derek lowe, you beat

>> joe: there's matt cain with the world series trophy. how good was he? 21 1/3 innings pitched this postseason, no earned runs allowed. giants win it here tonight. why don't we give you a look back at some of the history of this giants organization. the giants the polo grounds, the catch in the 1954 world championship, pulled up stakes in new york and led the major league expansion west for the 1958 season. unfortunately baseball's manifest test any has not included much winning for the giants or the city of san francisco. the bitter rivalry

with the hated dodgers has always tilted south. and, yes, the players are legendary. the say hey kid, marichal, mccovey, orlando cepeda, will, the thrill, and being thrilled by two generationings of bonds. but the highs have always been a precurser to that memory. 62 sad and sudden ending. the tragedy and misery of october 17, 1989. and coming so close in 2002. even breaking baseball's most hallowed record brought uncomfortable questions. at times it seemed the franchise was faced with the cold reality that it was no one more for where it played than how it performed.

after over 50 years of san francisco giants baseball, few would have said in spring training 2010 that this group of pursued heroes, this staff of electric, but young pitchers, this season of torture would end at the mountaintop. but that's baseball. america's most beautiful city. you now own baseball's greatest reward, a world series trophy. the trip west is now complete. there's the celebration in the middle of the diamond. and no longer do the fans of the giants have to here about this, the drought. fifty five seasons in between knocked the giants off the list, and moved texas up one space. it's been 50 seasons and now we welcome you inside our broadcast

booth. we've talked about it. chris rows talked about it with the players down there. this was a total team effort, tim, that was led by just absolutely phenomenal pitching. >> tim: there's a saying in baseball that pitching cures all ills. and from top to bottom not only did the giants have the good starters, the four strong starters, bumgarner last night, linecum tonight, you mentioned matt cain, but the bullpen. think about what the giants would have done without the bullpen in game 6 against the philadelphia phillies. >> joe: you look at some of the numbers since september and what this pitching staff did. that's how they got here. they got there to the postseason with what they did on the pitching mound. you see what the starters did in the division series, the bullpen in the nlcs, what happened here in this world series. heck, almost another shutout here tonight. but they got here with their pitching, there's no doubt. but as the guys have talked about, the

players, chris rose, it was seemingly a different guy in the lineup every night. >> tim: right. >> joe: cody ross, aubrey huff last night, it was edgar renteria with the three-run home run tonight. they just spread it around. it was a group effort. >> tim: the giants, of the 8 playoff teams, they spent the fewest days in first place, 37 days in first place in the national league regular season, and now they are world champions. nobody is taller. >> joe: they won their division on the final day of the regular season as they beat san diego. they won the nlcs by two games and now they have won it all. when we come back we will hear from the manager of the texas rangers, ron washington. he will sum you have texas's season when we come back. as the celebration for the giants continues here in texas.

series in five games over the texas rangers. for texas, it was their first world series appearance. obviously bittersweet. a few minutes ago our ken rosenthal caught up with the losing manager, ron washington. >> ken: thanks. ron, you accomplished so much this season. you won the west, you beat the rays, you beat the yankees. what is the feeling like in that room right now? >> you know the guys are a little down, simply because they didn't just want to be in the world series, they wanted to win it. but, you know, you have to give congrats to the san francisco giants. they beat us. they beat us soundly. they played baseball better than we did. i always tell my guys it's not the best team that wins, it's the team that plays the best, and they certainly did that. i want to congratulate them. they deserve to be the world champions because i field like they beat a world champion. my guys, they are a little down. we thank each other for the effort we have given to each other since february. you know, the feeling that you feel and the

taste that you have in your mouth, you certainly want to try to come back next year and see if you can go all the way >> ken: you knew the giants could pitch. did you think they could pitch like this? >> i didn't know they could pitch that well, but it was just as good as advertised. those guys can do a lot of things with that baseball. they can throw a good fastball, they can cut it, they can spin it, they can change it. you know, in the seven-game series they got the four before we did and they deserve to be the world champions >> ken: ron, thank you very much. >> thank you. >> chris: ron washington, gracious obviously in defeat. rejoined by eric karros and ozzie guillen. it was all about giants pitching, especially tonight. >> eric: it really was. tim lincecum dominated the game. i think it was his experience. he got game one out of the way, his nerves and this is the second time he had to close out a series. didn't do it in the nlcs. he did it point. one thing about the

san francisco giants. all right. here's a live look at at&t park, and downtown san francisco where fans e pouring into willie mayes plaza. we'll take a look at all of them in a few minutes as they want to get closer to home of the san francisco giants what a great ring to it has. the home of the 2010 world series champs. welcome to an early edition of the ktvu channel 2 news. some have called the giants a team of destiny. i would say more like a team of defiance. they defied logic, the experts and the oddsmakers and they defied anybody to get them to cut their hair or shave their beards, and they dared anybody to stop them from brining the bay area its first ever world

series championship. and tonight they have done just that. we've got live team coverage for you. ktvu fred inglis is in arlington, texas. paul chambers is at at&t park. but let's begin with david stevenson at civic center. david go ahead. >> reporter: well, here i am at civic center plaza. take a look around. there are thousands of people here. they have remained after the broadcast they are sticking around to show their enthusiasm about the giants. they say they will be out in the streets celebrating the giants' percent world series win. it has been an exciting night out here. there were kids, adults all sorts of people of different ages and races out here celebrating the giants. little bit hairy out here in terms of enthusiasm. these folks are planning to spend the warm night out here celebrating the win of their

the playoff. in that 7th inning. >> let's go back to 7th inning where they scored those three runs. cody ross starts off with a single against cliff lee. juan uribe not bunting but hits another single. so all of a sudden now they are getting to the rangers cliff lee with back-to-back singles in the game. then it is huff. huff has never had a sacrifice bunt in his major league career. never had one until tonight. he pushes the players to second and third, and then comes edgar renteria. the 35-year-old edgar renteria 8 for 17. he had 3 home runs all year long but he steps up and belts his second home run of this world series 397 feet and he needed every foot of it. but it was the only run of the game for the giant it certainly proved to be enough and the celebration was already about to begin and is now maxing out

an intergenerational thing. where else would you find this. it has really crossed all circles of the bay area. we've all waited a long time in the bay area for a winner for the 20, 30 somethings but this is also for the people in their 40s, in their 50s, 60s and 70s who remember the giants coming here in 1958. and really wondered if this day would ever happen. especially after 2002. the good news is it finally has happened. there are a lot of people celebrating and it's not just about san francisco. the entire bay area even here in the east bay. >> thanks, joe. and i know you're a long time giants fan you grew up in the area like i did. i remember after 2002 when we were saying after this heartbreaking loss to the angels just once, once in our

going to be a two sided plaque shirt the backside which lists all the players. over to the right is where it depose through the dryer after 350 degrees. they are trying to crank out 9,000 of these shirts. that's the initial order. these are all licensed through major league baseball, and these all go to your local stores, local dugout to the giants store. they printed about 2,000 of them last night just in case this happened. and it did. i'm going to bring you down hair show you how they finish them up. i told you it's going to be a two sided shirt it comes down here this is where it's dry. i'm actually going to be able to pick up and show you after he shows you that this is it. take a look mark. world series champions. that's the front there's the back. this will be coming to a store near you. chuck tell us what you guys are going to be doing. >> this will be kind of a long ordeal. probably take us 12 to 15 hours

now what was the reaction from everything we've been able to tell the texas rangers fans very hospitable and kind that's a big football state down there but their reaction to this. did they file out there in a big hurry how did you see it ken. >> reporter: take a look at it now you can see quite a few rangers fans here. let me tell you something that really struck me, as the giants fans were celebrating their victory over here, the rangers know lab. thank nolan. thanking nolan ryan for the season they had, obviously this is a season unlike the rangers have ever seen before. i think you know i grew up here watching the rangers. they had nothing even approaching this until recent years. so these fans, they are obviously disappointed, but they were in good spirits it seems and thanking nolan ryan for an incredible season. >> absolutely they are to be

pitchers catchers. this is what the final product looks like. i want to show you how this is made. it starts right here. we have about 9,000 shirts that will be made in just the last few hours. they start blank and then i want to move you over to the press. this is where they start putting the back. this is the one side they are printing. they start with the white paint and these are going to appear in all shops around the bay area starting tomorrow morning. they printed about 2,000 of these last night. and again right now they are going to be working for the next 15 hours or so. this is the best color. everyone's been talking about the black and orange i don't know if you can see the bucket down here. this is the orange paint that they are putting on and it has to be the right color orange or else it would not be authorized by major league baseball, and that is the beautiful orange that's being applied to the back of these shirts. and again, they are going to be working throughout the evening for about 15 hours, and i want to show you something interesting. i showed you the finished product, and this is actually a mess up that they made.

they have to work very hard to get these just right and can see on here what were wrong with this shirt was the orange was not the right color orange. this is the wrong color orange. that's the right color orange. so it's a very detailed science here that they have to get just right to get these out to fans. the fans have been lining around the bay area to get shirts like this. this is the mess up one. there is it again. this will be coming to a store near you. they will be here for 15 hours. they waited until the end of the world series of course they had to wait and they called in about 20 to 22 workers to get here and they will be here working throughout the night. reporting live from union city maureen naylor ktvu channel 2 institution. >> thanks maureen. no doubt a labor of love for everybody involved in that project. in the meantime we've been showing you shots of at&t. fans are just heading down there in droves right now. the police we understand have arrived and let's get out to at&t make sure everybody is

time, didn't play. fans, if you listen the talk radio were on his case they were on brian say yan's case for spending so much money on a guy who was at the latter stages of his career. redemption for him. who cares now. as he comes through in great fashion, a three run homer that helped put the giants over in fact provided all their runs tonight. 3-1. let's take a look at the middle stages of this ball game. it's zero zero going to the 6th. looked like a pretty good chance for the giants to score here. freddy sanchez stop at right. nelson cruz comes in if you look at the replay he actually took his eye off the ball kind of looked down at the turf to see where he is apparently. and that falls in for a hit for freddy sanchez. the next batter buster posey deep he home easterly direction last night you think he could do its again. no. cruz a nice catch in deep right center to keep it scoreless.
