good morning. i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, november 2nd, election day. we want to update you on breaking news first we're following in oakland. chopper 2 is flying over this. firefighters are at the scene of this -- a three-alarm fire. it's at an apartment building on east 15th street. we're just getting word the flames have now been knocked down. these are live pictures you are looking at from chap -- from chopper 2. we haven't heard of any injuries as of yet. and we don't know how the fire started. we'll bring you details as they come in. the other big story this morning -- the torture finally over for giants' fans. they are celebrating san francisco's first ever world

championship. >> here it is! struck him out! >> this was the scene many long- time giants' fans thought they would never see. the giants are world series champions for the first time since they moved to san francisco. last night tim lincecum pitched another masterpiece. the giants' won 3-1 to become the new champions of major league baseball. >> how are you feeling right now? >> pretty excited right now. other than dealing with you guys. [ laughter ] >> yeah. i'm extremely happy. this is a major feat for all of us on this team and this organization. >> lincecum only allowed three hits during the game. edgar renteria, hit a three-run

home run in the game and was named world series mvp. about three hours ago, the champions returned to snow. claudine wong was up bright and early. she's live with more. >> reporter: the giants did not waste any time getting home. they got here around 4:00 a.m. and when they arrived, they were met by a crowd of hundreds. [ cheers ] >> reporter: as you can see, the crowd went absolutely wild when the five buses, carrying the team, the staff, got back to at&t park this morning. the fans waited for hours for them. they were rewarded with an upclose look at the trophy and some high-fives with some of their favorite giants. >> this is what we play for. this is -- at 4:00 in the

morning, these people are out here. it's awesome! >> i tell you what. we appreciate it. they have been here all season long. about 4:00 a.m., about says it all. >> my voice i left in texas. i don't have a november baseball for baseball, i guess. >> how does it feel to get off the bus -- >> it's awesome. it brings tears to your eyes. this is just incredible. >> reporter: the players only stayed for about a half an hour and only a handful of players came out to greet the fans. but they just wanted them to know they are proud of this scene and thrilled to be a part of history. we appreciate this more than they will ever know. >> i love the giants! ever since i was a litt kid

8:-- 8:45. if you can't make it there, you can watch it all here on ktvu. there were some spoilers. jade hernandez is here with the latest on that. >> reporter: we're live in front of the giants' dugout store. this is the auxiliary store right across the street from at&t park. thousands of people were enjoying the big win last night, but not everyone was keeping within the reins of control. there is a security guard out here this morning because they weren't able to fix it overnight or board it up. we've just learned that the san francisco police department won't have an official arrest number attributed to last night's celebrations until later this morning. a spokesperson by phone told me a few minutes ago there weren't any riots. just reports of civil

disobedience. >> hold the line! hey! hold the line! >> reporter: police set up a command post where officers managed the crowds. several law enforcement agencies helped rein in revelers. the san francisco sheriff's office assisted in security patrol. the department focused in on several neighborhoods. the department reports several incidents of vandalism in the mission district. police did allow bonfires hit in some of the trash cans. we spoke to chief gascon about that last night. he did not approve of this behavior. this is 22nd and mission. the okay pants of this car -- occupants of this car beaten and their car trashed.

officials in riot gear had to move in. >> the bonfire, they are just setting up fires. that's not causing any damage. as long as they are just celebrating, we'll leave them alone. we're here. if we see the crowds are getting out of hand, we'll move in. but that's not the case right now. >> reporter: newschopper2 was able to catch partygoers from above. the police department tells us they should have a report of arrest and overnight incidents in about two or three hours. they have to wait until all officers come back and they will tally up that number. we'll have that for you this afternoon at noon. reporting live from san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> okay, jade. thank you. 7:08. now, a deadly shooting marred the celebration in san francisco's marina district and

police are still out there looking for a suspect. this happened just before midnight at the gravity room nightclub on scott street just off chestnut. now, police were called in and they found a 22-year-old man who was shot several times. he was rushed to san francisco general hospital but he died a few hours later. we did check with the police. they said they've made no arrests yet. they are hoping to review surveillance tapes and are still out there questioning witnesses. 7:09. the polls are now open on this election day here in the bay area. they opened, in fact, at 7:00 this morning. they will close at 8:00 tonight. besides the california governor's race and a u.s. senate seat there are other closely-watched measures, including prop 19 which would legalize the use of marijuana in california. two people who will be following the election results closely are california's

gubernatorial candidates, meg whitman and jerry brown. meg whitman will watch the results in southern california. she already voted bay mail last week. democrat brown will stay in oakland and is staying put here in the bay area in order to follow the results. sal is following our commute. i know you are looking at san francisco right now. >> that's right. 101, northbound, san francisco. i want to see what the city traffic is light. a lot of people stayed up last night. northbound 101, traffic is busy approaching the downtown area and southbound is also slow. it's not too bad getting down to the airport. bay bridge toll plaza is backed up for about a 50-minute delay. metering lights are on. this morning's commute is gonna be okay if you are driving on northbound 280 in san jose. it's getting busy. let's go to steve. we have a little bit of fog

debt tated by bomb squads. the firstwoman bomb exploded at the swiss -- the first woman exploded at the swiss embassy. another bomb exploded at a mail courier company. after the discovery of dubai in britain, the head of the department is urging industry to rapidly develop detection equipment for cargo con tiners that carry -- containers that carry mostly freight. the u.s. senate allies are tightening security in yemen. the bombmaker is believed to be this man, the same man who built the underwear bomb last christmas day. experts say the printer cartilages from yemen contained

four times the amount of explosives contained in the christmas day bomb. both male bombs were wired to detonators were cell phone technology. 7:17. iran has postponed the trial for three uc berkeley graduates charged with spying. the spokesperson said sarah shourd needs to be summoned back to iran so all three can be on trial. she was released due to health problems and is in the united states. josh fattal and shane bauer remain in iran. the trial was expected to start saturday. meanwhile, the don't ask, don't tell policy will stay in effect until it works its way through the court. it was rud to leave the policy in place while the challenge on openly gay service

members was said to be unconstitutional. the house passed legislation to lift the ban but it was blocked in the senate. more families are suing pg&e in response to the san bruno pipe explosion. eighteen families just filed suit in superior court, alleging the utility did not properly respond to earlier gas leaks. they are seeking unspecified damages. eighteen people died and homes were destroyed after the blast. pg&e says they are committed to helping the community rebuild. investigators in san jose are trying to figure out whether a suspicious fire is connected to other fires. the fire destroyed a bar. officials tell us the flames started somewhere outside the

building but the cause remains under investigation. we do have an update for you on a shooting of a 3-year- old girl in san francisco's potrero hill district. police say the little girl is expected to survive. her grandmother, who was shot while shielding her with his body, is also expected to recover. police say this happened sunday night, this attack appears to be gang-related and that the intended target was a 20-year- old man who suffered non-life- threatening injuries. >> police are still out there looking for a man who robbed a very busy restaurant in concord. he had a semi-automatic handgun. this happened around 10:00 friday night at the chili's on concord avenue. police say the man pointed the gun at a counter employee and demanded money. no shots were fired no one was hurt but the restaurant was packed with customers at the time. the suspect escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. you can put your money on a bay area college now that it's

uc berkeley is bucking the trend in college expenses. cal is the most expensive school in the country. with out of state students paying $50,000 for tuition, dorms and meals. this is the first time any school has topped $50,000 that's a public school. cal students who are residents pay less than $28,000 a year. we are followinsome breaking news out of the washington, d.c. area, where there are reports of another shooting at a military building. this one happened at a coast guard recruiting station in a shopping mall in northern virginia. like the other four recent shootings at military buildings, no one was injured.

firefighters knocked down flames about 30 minutes ago on a three-story building on east 15th street. it appears the fire started at

around 6:00. they say the cause of the fire is uninvestigation. time now, 7:29. a lot of long-time giants' fans may be waking up thinking, it was just a dream. but no, this dream came true. the giants are the world series champs. ktvu's claudine wong was outside at&t park just a couple of hours ago. you saw the giants come home. they were talking to you, claudine. >> reporter: yes. very, very happy, obviously. it does feel kind of like a whirlwind when we're all letting it sink in this morning. one thing is certain, giants didn't waste any time coming home. they wanted to be back home in the bay. just moments after that incredible moment they won, they headed home. >> here it is. struck him out! >> reporter: that was a strike that ended game 5 of the world series and sealed the championship for the giants.

aaron rowand said this morning what they had had done didn't start sinking in until the champagne started flowing in the longer room. >> oh, man. a lot of time spent, a lot of blood, sweat and tears. i think everybody is enjoying this. >> reporter: the giants wanted to be back home and the fans wanted them back. hundreds waited through the nate for them to get back to at&t park, which is what they did at 4:00 in the morning. the giants, the fans, players said it was all un-- it seemed unreal. >> once we get an opportunity to sit down, it will definitely hit us hard.

mcalister street and then return to the civic center. this is the same route the giants took when they won the world series in 1958. we'll talk live to mayor newsom to get more details about the parade. that's coming up at 8:45. if you want be there in person, you can, of course, watch it all right here on ktvu channel 2. overnight dozens of troublemakers hit the streets of san francisco and they ruined some of the world series fun. police report several incidents of vandalism outside the at&t park. you can see some of the damage here, a window covered up with tarp. this also happened in the mission district and other neighborods. police did make several arrests. jade hernandez is kochering that part -- covering that part of the story. >> the giants' world series victory is expected to cause an immediate economic boom for the

souvenir sellers. all bay area sports authorities, they are already open for the day. they open uple real early so fans -- they open up real early so fans can buy commemorative gear. and a company in union city has been working all night. look. they are cranking out championship t-shirts like that one right there. workers spent the overnight hours doing two-sided prints on about 9,000 shirts believing it could take them up to 15 hours to finish. the t-shirts are licensed by major league baseball and should be available in the giants dugout stores today. polls opened here in the bay area just about a half hour ago. the governor's race, the u.s. senate race and prop 19 on marijuana are some of the highest profile races for voters in california.

concord. there is another broken water main in concord. we just talked to a spokeswoman for contra costa water. she said there was also an irrigation leak and another broken pipe in walnut creek and pleasant hill. she said service is affected but they don't know yet the exact numbers. 7:36. the search continues for suspects in a deadly drive-by shooting in richmond. it happened on south 21st street and cutting boulevard shortly before 4:00 yesterday afternoon. police say a man in his 20s was shot while riding a bicycle. we don't know his name. witnesses say they saw a white four-door buick sedan drive away from the shooting scene. if you have any information, you asked to call the police. city officials say they may

work trying to get the vote out. we've run commercials and movie theaters. we've done a lot of different outreach events. i think people are really understanding the way it works. i've looked at many, many ballots that have been returned. people are getting it. they are marking the ballots correctly. >> it's interesting. for people who don't know, this is to save money to prevent any runoff elections, has this worked in other counties that have tried the rank choice. i imagine you tried -- >> yeah, it's been used in san francisco for five, six yee years -- six years. it's been successful there. and other countries have used this method for some period of time. over the -- over the course of time, it will had save money. there is always a higher

turnout for november's elections and we get more people voting. >> turnout is definitely a big topic of consideration right now. talk about the results, because we understand that there will be a delay. will they definitely be delayed with the rank choice voting? >> yeah, there's always a -- some delay in getting final results and that just takes the normal processing cycle that we have to go through. this may be a little bit longer. but not really significantly. you know, it's always easy if somebody runs away with the election, everybody can predict the results. we don't have that luxury. we have to make sure we count every single vote from every voter that casts a ballot. >> so we're looking at -- we've heard friday probably for those results? >> i'll release results tonight at 8:00. those will be the vet-by-mails and there is a lot of those.
