>> reporter: good afternoon. san francisco is continuing to cebrate the world series. we'll show you the well hum home the giants got this morning. many fans are celebrating by opening up their wallets and snapping up giants' clothing. the campaign -- almost over. time now for voters to take the initiative. i'm tom vacar.

the noon news starts right now. good afternoon. we begin this noontime with the champions of major league baseball. the celebration continues and the torture is over. the giants are world series champions for the first time since they moved to san francisco. >> here it is! struck him out! [ cheers ] >> this is the scene many long- time giants' fans thought they would never see. the giants won 3-1. tim lincecum pitched a masterpiece. he only allowed three hits during eight innings. edgar renteria hit a three-run homer in the 7th inning and was named world series mvp. the giants' team left texas and return to their home work very early this morning and they were greeted by hundreds of enthusiastic fans, while

thousands are expected at the big parade tomorrow. claudine wong joins us now from at&t park, which is still drawing a crowd, right, claudine? >> reporter: the fans keep coming. giants' fever is alive and well. there is a line at this temporary stand. and beyond that is the giants' dugout store that has a line that times has stretched across the lefty o'doul's. giants already got a heroes' welcome home when they got back home and rolled in here just before dawn. fans waited for hours, they just wanted to welcome the champions home! >> we love them! >> reporter: we finally arrived just before 4:00 this morning. players say there's nothing coming home to this.

started. live in san francisco, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> as we just heard in claudine's report, stores that sell giants' merchandise are very busy. many of the items were just made overnight and are being delivered to specialty shops and department stores all over the bay area today. it's a winfall for those fans. >> giant' customers have been showing up all over the play, enthusiastic to buy the apparel. we've been selling out in a lot of the stores. we are definitely behind the curve. >> all of the talk of san francisco and images during the game provide a far for reaching implementation for san francisco. the parade for the giants gets underway tomorrow at 11:00. it will start near montgomery and then proceed up

mcallister street. it's the same parade route the giants took back in 1958 when they won the world series. >> we'll make sure that this is a family-friendly event and people from all over northern california, or all over the state, or the nation, for that matter can feel safe, secure and confident about the parade. >> if you want watch the parade in person, you can watch it right here. we'll be streaming as well. we've been talking with police and checking on problems caused when some people went too far with their celebrating. we'll have more on that part of the world series stories shortly. the other big story today, it's election day. the polls opened at 7:00 today.

the alameda labor coup was still busy preparing literature, urging people to get out to vote. besides the california governor's race there are other measures on the ballot, including prop 19 which would legalize the recreational use of california. >> the campaigns leading up to this election, they haven't always been pretty, but there are some voters who believe in the process. tom vacar has more. >> reporter: today is the culmination of a long, grueling and excruciatingly political season. renee marks of alameda allows her home to be a polling place out of a sense of duty and fund. >> we got a call from the election people asking if we were willing to do it again.

so we assumed the house would always be an election place. we agreed to do it. and we get to see the neighbors and meet people. >> reporter: by day's end, we will have chosen a senator, all members of congress, governors of state and local propositions. it will end what some say is one of the sleaziest elections in history. not a tidal wave of voters yet, there are encouraging signs. >> it's been slow and steady. we expect it to pick up when people get out of work. we expect a big turnout. >> my feel something your vote does turn out, especially when there's close elections, like gore versus bush. that's one reason. i also feel like a lot of the people at the top, they really don't care. >> for me, it's an obligatory. i know it's a choice for most

people. but i like to have my voice heard. it's important to me. >> reporter: hundreds of millions of dollars have been spent on this effort, including what -- from meg whitman. republican candidate, meg whitman, cast her vote last week by mail. she plans to watch election results come in tonight. democrat jerry brown voted this morning at a fire station in the oakland hills. he will watch and wait for results with supporters here in the bay area. many candidates are still campaigning and working to get people to vote. barbara boxer was at the oakland grille greeting supporters today. tonight, she will had attend a democratic party election event in southern california. her opponent, carly fiorina

voted, and she will fly to attend a republican party election event in irvine. some alameda county voters are using rank-choiced voting for the first time. the idea is to prevent run-off elections and save money by having them cast ballots. county registrar voters say they've done a lot of work explaining the process including more than 150 presentations. >> i think people are really understanding the way it works. i've looked at many, many ballots that have been returned. people are getting it. they are marking the ballots correctly. >> the way it works, if no candidate get as majority of first-choice votes, then the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated in this example, candidate b. then votes for the

oakland firefighters rescued seven people from a burning apartment building this morning, including two children. the fire was reported just after 6:00 a.m. at a three-story building on east 15th street. about 40 firefighters responded and rescued seven people from the upper floors. one adult and two children were hospitalized for treatment of smoke inhalation. investigators say it appears the fire began in the basement and caused about $250,000 in damage. the cause is under investigation. we're getting new information about several waterpipe breaks in contra costa county. a spokesperson just told us that a surge in pressure early this morning is likely cause. she says crews have isolated the break on detroit and another one on oak grove and apple and repairs are underway.

about 30 homes and apartments are without water because of the break. police are still looking for a suspect that noontime involved in a deadly shooting in san francisco's marina district. it happened just before midnight at the gravity room night room. officers found a 22-year-old man who had been shot multiple times. he died a short time later at san francisco general hospital. police are hoping to review surveillance tapes for clues and officers are still interviewing witnesses. now back to the san francisco giants and their big world series wins. the celebrations spilled out onto the streets all over the city. sf police put every available officer on the street with reinforcements from the chp and sheriff's office. jade hernandez takes us back to show us how officers handled

unruly crowds. >> reporter: scene was much the same everywhere you turned. revelers and fireworks. hey! hold the line! get back here! >> reporter: san francisco held firm law and order as crazed fans swarmed valencia street, screaming and yelling. party revelers poured out of the bars. ktvu spoke to police chief george gascon just as the celebrations got underway. >> they are setting off fires in trash cans and stuff. that's not causing any damage. again, as long as they are just celebrating we're gonna leave them alone. we're here. if we see the crowd is getting out of hand, we'll step in. but that's not the case right now. >> reporter: eventually officers did crack down on celebratory crowds which turned

the weather is -- is certainly nice for the giants' celebration. >> nice and it will be nicer tomorrow. we have some fog. it's offshore. we had a little bit this morning. when you get to november, you are usually not dealing with coastal fog. there's still some offshore. it's kind of just dancing more towards mendocino. for most, it's sunny and a nice, warm day -- well, for november it is. we're in the upper 60s and a few low to mid-70s. jet stream goes to the north. there is a very strong system in the gulf of alaska that will play into our forecast. i think we have it wait until sunday evening and monday when the next rain will come in here. until then you can see everything building way up. as it builds up to the north, that means everything comes -- well, at a slower pace and

warmer weather. certainly for this time of year. napa, 77 today after yesterday's 74. we'll go 72 in the city. 76 walnut creek. oakland 74 and 77 san jose. two warmer than yesterday. it's already 74 in livermore and concord. 70 in santa rosa and napa. they were in the 40s. napa made it down to 42. san jose airport at 72. a lot of 60s. 90 down at palm springs. 80s down in los angeles. there's your warm weather down there. 60s and 70s from ukiah. this will bump the high out of here. in the meantime, we have 70s, some of these are mid- to upper 70s, getting close to 80. 60s and 70s by the coast. if you are heading to the parade, sunny. probably not sunny at 11:00 a.m. but i think by the time they

stocks are rising. most of the gains coming from sectors. right now the dow currently up 80 at 11,205. nasdaq up 27. s&p 500 up almost 10. the eruption of indonesia's most active volcano is causing international flight cancellations as plumes of smoke blacken the sky. some airlines are canceling

flights today to nearby airports. scientists say the eruption could last for months. the government ordered airlines to choose routes that go around the ash. air asia and singapore air decided to sis spend several flights but hope to resume operations soon. an 80-year-old alameda woman is hoping that two thieves will have a change of heart and give her back the little dog they stole on saturday. she says one of the men stole her 6-year-old dog, deuce, and another man stole her purse. police say the men told the victim they -- they a gun, but that was not confirmed. she said it happened in the early afternoon. she was less than a block from her home when the robbery happened. police say the men were driving a faded blue or green '80s honda or toyota sedan, with a gray front quarter panel. they are asking anyone with information to please call police. smudges on ballots are causing scanners to reject

thousands of vote-by-mail ballots. now county workers are trying to remove the smudges using rubber erases. the company that makes the ballots has taken responsibility for the problem and says it will pay the county for all costs associated with inspecting and cleaning the ballots. oakland voters can get a free ride from their home to the ballot box this evening from friendly cab. the taxi rides were available for registered voters between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. this morning and will be available this evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. if you need a ride, call friendly cab and ask for an elections day voter taxi. you will find a link at chute.com under "web links." that will do it for us. we'll have complete election coverage and more on the giants on our next newscast on the news at 5:00. thanks for watching have a great day.
