that has to be one of the biggest parades in san francisco history. >> yes. it's a magical day in san francisco. so many years, so many disappointing seasons you tell but today all of that was in the past. this day was about your 2010 world sham i don't know san francisco giants -- world champion san >> reporter: the orange and black, the giants baseball. they warmed into civic center plaza. for 52 years they have waited and today their giants brought home to them their first world championship in the city by the bay. >> this day is a bless he had reminder -- blessed reminder for a dream fulfilled. >> you guys have waited so long for this and we brought it home for you guys. >> reporter: they introduced the team one by one. they are a group of guys that gelled over the season. each june filled with a unique

civic pride. to think we almost lost this franchise twice. >> there was a lot of civic pride today. well all those hundreds of thousands of people coming into the heart of san francisco today caused some huge backups, especially on bart. the trains were parked. was it worth it? >> reporter: well, i think many fans would say, yes, bart and cal train had near record breaking crowds on their trains this morning. cal train had an extra five trains as tens of thousands of giants fans flooded into san francisco to celebrate. >> reporter: a flee of passengers poured -- bart said today ranked in top five of all

time. >> it was -- so that's a lot of folks. >> if you were one of the extra 70,000 people on bart in the morning, this is what it looked like i object side the train. even the train operators commented. >> reporter: these giants' fans weren't complaining. people were chanting and cheering. it was great. >> it was so worth it. >> reporter: getting on to one of those trains was another challenge. >> huge lines that were actually winding around just to bide -- buy a ticket. >> this commuter snapped a photo of one of the lines. >> just to get the ticket. >> this was at the bart station where they opened the gates to prevent over crowding. some of the fans from the south bay and peninsula cook cal train to get here. they had 19,000 more passengers

last night. but of course it just pace the way for a lot of very hard work up ahead --- >> meeting with reporters today. the governor elect damaged that beating his wealthy opponent was the easty part. finding a way to pay for everything california wants is the hard part. >> i'm aware of the deficit. it's defied the best efforts of several governors. i didn't create this mess. i'm going to be straight and tell it like it is and i will do everything i can to make it work. >> some good news for the governor elect. last night californiaians voted to get rid of the two-thirds requirement to pass a pudge -- budget. they should have an easier time of getting budgets. but they also passed other initiatives that make it difficult for the state to

raise the revenue necessary to balance the budget. >> voters gave and they also took away. >> reporter: . >> with democrats now controlling everything, voters many blame them. >> it does take two-thirds now to raise revenue. >> so on the one hand the people said by majority give us a budget. on the other hand they said don't pick my pocket. so this will take all the know- how that i said i had and all the luck of the irish as i go forward. >> reporter: his first step will go to sacramento tomorrow to begin discussions on how to tackle the deficit he's likely to inher right about $12 billion. moments after conceding the

governor's race. whitman was overcome with emotion. she was seen trying to fight back tears. the republican candidate lost to jerry brown by more than 10%age points . it appears san francisco will need to find a new mayor. the unofficial results show mayor newsom with a sizeable lead. he holds 50% of the vote compared to maldonado with 39.5%. harris holds a very slight lead over cooley. harris has 45.9% of the vote compared to cooley with 45.7%. voters decided a number of statewide' propositions including some that drew international attention. prop 19 which would have legalized the recreational use of marijuana and ---- was

defeated. global warming act was soundly defeated as well. 61% said no in response to 39% saying yes. a volunteer election worker from san francisco is facing another of felony charges today after he stole 75 ballots from a polling station yesterday afrnoon. while police have found their man, there is still a problem with the ballots. >> reporter: the stolen ballots may be the most well-known, police say they have their man but not the votes he stole. >> the prelim near search unfortunately did not result in the stolen items. >> reporter: they -- the home is in the 11th precinct. he was working here yesterday when the votes went missing. police say nicholas took a

is at a standstill right now. what caused a member of the construction crew to get hurt on the job. we are live now in oakland with more. >> reporter: good afternoon. newt time the incident caused any problem with traffic today. we are above highway 24. now earlier today construction inside the tunnel was temporarily suspended while they completed an investigation of an early morning accident which sent a contractor to the hospital. they were inserting a -- into the ceiling and some of the concrete fell through the ceiling. >> reporter: here's a look from chopper 2 this morning. cal tran's officials say just before 7:00 this morning he was injured when shock create fell on him. ironically it fell from the ceiling of the tunnel today and injured the worker. since that time all work has come to a standstill while

officials investigate the incident to see what went wrong. >> perhaps it was too brittle. we don't know at this point. but somehow it didn't set properly. >> was there an air pocket behind it that weakened it. was there some way that it was applied or that the members turf was incorrect or not -- >> they don't believe there is any structural issues to theton until. the tunnel project itself is on schedule. but before construction can start again, they want the workers to know that safety comes first. >> no one wants to work in a tunnel where an accident has occurred. we want to make sure that the workers know we found out what went wrong and we will prevent that from happening in the future. election officials are still try to go figure out who is going to be oakland's next mayor. but with rank choice voting, the winner needs 50% plus one vote to claim victory. tonight at 6:00, counting all the votes and when the registrar this is that will finally be done. president obama is blaming the weak economy for democratic losses in the mid-term elections. he says his administration has managed to stablize the economy but admits it has failed to boost jobs. >> yesterday's vote confirmed what i've heard from folks all across america. people are frustrated. they are deeply frustrated with the pace of our economic

recovery and the opportunities that they hoped for their children and their grandchildren. >> reporter: republicans will now control the house of representatives but the democrats still have control of the senate. that means that san francisco house speaker nancy pelosi is out but harry reid is still senate majority leader. he spoke today about his hopes of working with republican leaders in the house and senate. >> i have a -- i have known john for many years. this is time we need to set aside our speeches and start rolling up our sleeves and have a little sweat on our brow. >> he says he's willing to make some changes but it's sheafing america from bankruptcy. >> what could get 1 million people out, a celebration for

francisco giants. we were right there along the parade route. he is live now in the city with more. >> reporter: from here on market street you can look in each direction before during and after the parade and not see the end of the crowd. by far, the biggest group of people i have ever seen all here to celebrate their champions. [ cheering and applause ] it's been a long time since san francisco had a party like this. fans came from across the bay area to thank the giants for a magical ride. >> i am beyond excited. i'm a british born baseball facility nationallic. --- fanatic. >> she had a long wait for this day as did many others. >> i waited since i was a little kid. my dad -- [ audio difficulty ] >> reporter: the parade itself was relatively short, a san francisco fire engine led the

the republicans picked up more seats in the house last night than any party in any election in 60 years. this new balance of power has some major ramifications. we are live tonight in oakland with a look at what all this means to us here in the bay area. >> reporter: well, frank, we are here at the federal building where we talked with congresswoman barbara lee a short time ago about the newhouse of representatives that she will outpatient in the new year. one where democrats and bay area influence will be diminished. bay area incumbent kept their seats, many by wide margins. only the -- nationally, republicans won the day and took control of the house of

representatives. >> nationally, people of course sent allowed signals about the frustrations around the lack of jobs and unemployment and the economy. >> reporter: she says she would like to see speaker nancy pelosi become minority leader and -- >> northern california will continue to be a very strong delegation. >> reporter: california republican party tom says the election was historic and a historic opportunity. >> the republicans need to move beyond the party of no and show concrete examples of how they can improve government and help people's lives. >> reporter: in california, they say republicans may lose one seat in the state assembly but democrats scored a major victory. >> a little bit of power can be a dangerous thing. >> reporter: they say state

here as we head toward the bay area weekend. the clouds you see out there right now, just some high fair weather clouds that will filter your sunshine and keep things a bit warmer tonight. these were the highs today. it was warm. tomorrow, about as warm and cooler as we head toward friday. so there's the weather system i'm tagging. this system is going to start to provide more clouds on friday, saturday and then sunday right now it looks like it's going to rain in the bay area on sunday. right now, the best weekend day will be saturday. temperatures tomorrow afternoon, lots of 70s and a few 80s. a lieutenant like today. it's going to be a little cooler around the coast. livermore tomorrow downtown. 73 degrees at lunch time. tomorrow will be the last warm day of the week as temperatures begin to trend down on friday, saturday and sunday.

san franciscoians voted on several ballot measures. measure b was defeated 57 to 43%. it would have required city employees to pay more toward their pensions and healthcare. it was very controversial. san franciscoians voted overwhelmingly to -- rather than mandating that their salaries equal the second highest of any transit operators anywhere in the

country. measure g passed 64 to 36%. voters also approved measure l, the sit/lie law which prohibits people from block sidewalks from 7:00 p.m. to -- voters rejected measure m. m would also have overturned the sit/lie law. but perhaps the most visible change will be to the city's leadership newsom is the next -- what happens next year. >> reporter: even though the election is over, a horse race of a different kind has begun here at city hall. >> this town is going to need another mayor and i just have three words. fear the beard.
