two people die in east oakland following a police chase. a witness says how fast the cars were driving. a truck accident that's been there since 4:30 this morning still in the middle of the lanes on a may, jr. bay area freeway. sunny and warm. higher clouds moving in. plus, a little boy, this little boy found abandoned on a bay area street. what witnesses saw that may help police determine who he is. the morning news continues. good morning. thank you for joining us. it's thursday, november 4th. >> let's check your weather and traffic.

>> thank you very much. and good morning. high clouds over us on the mild side with 50s and 60s. temperatures really warm yesterday, a lot of low 80s and record heat up. 60 keys 70s exam low 80s, cooler due to an increase in the higher clouds. now an update on traffic. right now, this truck is blocking three lanes of southbound 1501. -- southbound 101. they are going to right the truck. but the three lanes are still blocked southbound 101 down to 880. that ramp is closed and the freeway is down to one lane on southbound 101 which obviously is never good in such a busy area. you can see traffic is beginning to back up. the longer its say there, the more impact on the morning commute. the and the bay bridge toll plaza. there was an earlier stalled

vehicle that caused them to turn the metering lights on early. they are on at the bay bridge. a rather large back-up at the toll plaza. and we have a very serious crash on the streets of oakland this morning. two people are dead in a busy area of east oakland. we are on the scene with more deat as. >> good morning. and one of the people that was a suspect, police were chasing the other person. just an innocent victim. this happened at 106th in east oakland. oakland police are in charge of the investigation. right now, taking their measurements. a witness says following the collision, there was a big explosion and fire. one died here at the scene. the coroner has just take anway the body this morning following the police chase. they say they attempted to stop a man driving a sedan for excessive speed. the driver did not stop and tried to evade them by drive

agoway. they spotted the driver on 580 at 105th avenue. the driver exited the freeway, within a couple of miles at 106th and foothill. the chase ended when the suspect collided with another vehicle turning south from 106th avenue. >> turning come from you this way. turning this way. and he came by and hit him and knocked him over there. >> reporter: witnesses say the female victim was driving a bmw. chp says the woman was pronounced dead there. the man was driving the other vehicle and died on the scene. it's not possible to tell just from the amount of light about what kind of car that is. the witness says the suspect was driving about 80 miles per hour at the time. was being chased by chp officers at the time. coming up, we're trying to find out more, whatever we can about the two people who died here

this morning. reporting live in oakland, channel 1 news. overnight fire forced dozens of people out of their apartment in redwood city. it was reported shortly before 3:00 this morning at an apartment complex that houses people with disabilities. firefighters tell us at least 40 people were forced out of their homes. some managed to escape the flames on their own, but others needed some help. the victims have been loaded onto a bus and the red cross is trying to find a place for them to stay. we are out talking with investigators at that time scene this morning. and we will have a live update in just a little bit. an abandoned child, a little boy is still in protective custody. and the search for his family and the woman who left him, that will continue later this morning. we are live at the police headquarters now with the latest information. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we drove by the neighborhood where the toddler was dropped

off yesterday morning and it's quiet there right now. we came here to the police department. this is where the search for the toddler's family will get underway in about an hour, around 7:00 this morning. we're told by police, since the news of the toddler's situation has been distributed throughout the media, tips have come into the department. he's between 18 months and 2.5 years old. a woman dropped him off in a secluded yard yesterday morning. and then was seen getting into a waiting ab. police believe that the neighborhood must have been specifically chosen, but they don't know if the woman is the boy's mother or not. the young african american woman was described in her 20s, wearing a brown jacket and a yellow backpack. a neighbor found the toddler in front of his house after 8:00 a.m. >> little black fella. >> reporter: scared? >> no, he was happy to see me.

a little bitty baby. about that big. if he would have stepped off, the car would have killed him. i walked over and picked him up and gave him a little kiss. >> reporter: a police department lieutenant says the boy doesn't speak clearly and can't really answer questions. he was wearing audial los cowboys shirt was missing a shoe. police will resume the search for the bomb quorum the family once detectives get back here into the department at police headquarters. live this morning, channel 2 news. an estimated 1 million people jammed the streets of downtown san francisco for a once in a lifetime event. highlights for you that celebrated san francisco's first world series championship. the huge crowd cheered on the

trouble after the huge rally. crowds flooded market street and traffic came to a stand still and some of the people climbed on top of buss there, disrupted service in the downtown area. and police made some arrest of a couple of people but no reports have come in. and san francisco's clean- up crew, they never had a job quite like this. they worked all afternoon, well into the night, cleaning up the giant mess. piles of trash were left bestate of mind confetti rained down for a longtime. you can watch the entire victory parade and see our coverage of the win. just go to our website and look for the world series tab. well the oak l.a.p.d. police department will have extra police officers on duty tomorrow. police say they don't expect any problems. they'll be ready to happened

any kind of demonstration or trouble that could erupt on the streets of downtown oakland. there were hours of peaceful protests after the verdict last july, but late in the night, some people did get out of hand. there was some looting and vandalizing of local businesses and police arrested about 78 people. the jury convicted the former police officer of invol untear manslaughter for the fatal shooting new year's day 2090. the judge could sentence homie several years in state prison or he could give him only probation. late they are morning, oakland's police chief will join us thrive the studio and tell us more about his department getting ready. the police search continues for a hit-and-run driver who injured three people. it happened on westbound interstate 80 near highway 37 yesterday afternoon. witnesses tell the chp that the

driver of a red ford suv was driving wrecklessly and smashed into a truck. three passengers in the truck we injured. a police search using police dogs and helicopters failed to locate the suspect. traffic fatalities, sigalerts, all kinds of stuff this morning. >> it's been kind of a troubling morning. get to work and we have bad accidents to talk about. first thing we're going to talk about is the overturned truck here on southbound 101. sounds like we have some progress here. looks like they have dragged it out of the lanes. what they may be able to do is work on and it open some of the lanes southbound 101 at 880 in san jose. right near the airport. and our crew is right there. looks like they might be able to open up some lanes. but traffic is backed up this morn ago approaching that closier. and it's been that way going on two hours.

started at 4:30. at 6:30, two hours of closier looks like the officer is beginning to open lanes. move along and take a look at bay bridge that. has been backed up early because of a stall on the upper deck being removed. and this morning's, san francisco looks good. yesterday was so crowd, it's hard to believe. but right now, san francisco is nice and quiet on the freeways and city streets. >> thank you. good morning to you all. high clouds, mild, muggy, warm. unbelievable heat in southern california. they had some just all-time record highs yesterday. for us, warm. a lot of upper 70s, low 80s. still warm conditions. these higher clouds will take the edge off just a little bit. little bit more on the muggy side. 50s to start. 70s at noon. and 70s at 3:00 in the afternoon.

welcome back. the airlines just grounded all of its air bus jumbo jets after an engine blew out of the plane in midair with more than 450 people onboard. debris from the plane fell out of the sky. look at it. the jet made an emergency landing in singapore. we haven't heard of any injuries. they say they are grounded the fleet until it can figure out the cause of the engine failure. this is the second failure in recent months. back in august, their 747 made an emergency return to san francisco after an engine blew out shortly after take-off. no one injured in that incident either. youtube removed videos that show an american-born muslim cleric calling for a holy war.

ewe tube spokesperson told the new york times that the videos violated the website's divide lines that prohibit incitement to commit violent acts. more than two-thirds of paroled inmates in california end up back in prison. the department of corrections says more than 67% of inmates released between 2005 and 2006 returned to prison in the next three years. that's one of the highest rates in the country. the report also found that 70% of the returns to prison were caused by violations rather than criminal convictions. at the u.s. capitol this morning, republican transition teams are busy preparing the the record new congress. there are already signals, big fights are looming with the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, dave. republicans are already making

clear they want to kill president barack obama's agenda. on the bush era tax cuts that expire at the end of this year, republicans want to extend them for everyone. president barack obama wants wealthier americans to pay up. the gop wants to repeal health care reform. president barack obama says he will tweak it. and the president wants a new $50 billion economic stimulus plan that republicans have already rejected. both sides are indicating some willingness to compromise on energy and education. but political analysts are predicting it is not going to happen. >> the republicans want to defeat obama in 2012. and the democrats, the left is going to pit pressure on president barack obama not to compromise. >> reporter: and of course a really big question, what role will san francisco congressman

nancy pelosi play going forward? she loses her house speakership in january. and in her post-election interview, she would not say if she plans to stay in congress. report live. a public hear as good scheduled in san jose tonight about california's proposed bullet train. the rail system may face some challenges. the incoming head of the transportation committee says he doesn't agree with the funding of some project, although he didn't mention california specifically. the project is relying on at least $15 billion more from the government. a new report calls the $43 billion rail project a bad investment. the rail authority has predicted that 39 million riders will ride by 2030. but the professor says it will likely be one tenth of those figures because it will not

serve a primary metro area. if you're just getting up, a ton of things to tell you about in the commute. >> yeah, we've had just a rough one for this thursday morning. first of all, we're going to get to the 101 accident in san jose. these are live pictures of one of the huge tow trucks. they need more than one to right this overturned truck. it flipped over just after 4:30 this morning. that's a tough turn. a lot of trucks over the years have flipped over here because the freeway makes a tight turn near 880. and the, there, i think what our photographer is showing us that the ramp there. and you know, he has been there, he knows how tight it is off the ramp. so what happened is the truck was getting opt southbound 101, flipped over. and now southbound is 01 how it's narrowing down to just one lane there. is a non-commute direction, but

northbound may be affected. we will let you know more coming up. let's go to 237, traffic okay into the valley. and the toll plaza, they had to turn the metering lights on early becauseover a small crash on the upper deck. but there's no such thing as a small crash on that bridge. we have a back-up. a lot of high clouds over us. not only now, but increasing throughout the day. mild to warm with temperatures 70s to near 80s. overnight lows are 50s and 60s. see higher clouds up from it will southwest. more tropical in nature. but they'll be some all over the place and most locations say partly cloudy. high cloudings mild warm. san francisco 62. oakland berkeley not far away, 59. cooler now, 53.

good morning. traffic is going to be affected by the major crash south ever southbound 101 at 880. and almost the entire freeway is taken up this by this crash. they have to truth truck. and after that, they're going to open the lanes. they just told us it's going to be at least another hour before it's cleared up. another live report from the scene or another live report coming up. still not clear right now whether the incouple bent bay area congressman will be returning to capitol hill in january to represent the east bay's 11th district. that race is too close to call.

the democrat leads the republican challenger by just 121 votes. now he is seeking a third term. it could be days or weeks until all the absentee and provisional ballots are counted. even as jerry brown celebrates his victory, he international space station he is aware of the challenge -- he international says he is aware of the challenges he will face. he is taking office with a $12 billion deficit. >> i am very aware of the deficit. i am very aware of how long it's been around. it's defied the best efforts of several governors. >> one advantage brown will have in tuesday's election, california approved a measure to get rid of the two-thirds requirement to to approve a budget. we've got a mysterious case

strong opening. but there isn't a great indication as to why. overnight, asia and europe responding favorably to our u.s. federal reserve decision that we talked about yesterday. the dow up almost 50 points already. >> so we'll go ahead and smile and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here, thursday november 4th. >> time now 6:30. we are following developing news this morning. we are learning more about a horrible early morning crash that killed two people. it happened at 106th avenue and mcarthur boulevard. we have within there out there all morning. investigators, witnesses, what can you tell us? >> good morning. this location is west of the oakland zoo. right now, tow truck drivers have put one of the vehicles on a flat bed and the other is getting ready to be put on the flat bed. look at the impact of this crash.

you can barely recognize it. just looks like metal. across the street, you can see people cleaning up an auto service center where both the vehicles wound up this morning. coroners took away the body of one of the two people that died in this early morning crash following a police chase. they say they attempted to stop a man driving a sedan for excessive speed. the driver did not stop and tried to evade police by drive agoway. they they initially spotted the driver and then t driver exited the freeway within a couple of mile it feels chase inned when the suspect collided with another vehicle turning south from 106th avenue. >> turning, coming from this way. turning this way. and this came bay biand hit them hymn and knocked him over there. >> reporter: the other was take on the the hospital and died there. speaking to witnesses and police, the conflicting

accounts. witnesses we've talked too are convinced that the suspect was driving the suv which is the subpoena's vehicle. but the police are certain that the suspect informs the bmw. right now, we're going to go with the police account until we hear otherwise. both cars ended up in the service center over there being cleaned up right now. this is a police investigation because it found up. -- it wound up on the city streets. there are a lot of questions right now about a little boy abandoned. police want to know where his family is and who is the woman who left anymore a yard exam then ran away.

we asked police this morning if they tracked down the taxicab driver. as far as we know, they haven't yet. but detectives are expected to get here into headquarters here within the hour or so. do you know this little boy? that's what police want want to know this morning. someone saw a young african american woman dropping off this little boy. she dropped him off in a secluded neighborhood yesterday morning around 8:00. she was wearing a brown jacket and a yellow back sciatic quickly got into a waiting cab. a neighbor found the little boy in front of his home. police say the area was deliberately chosen. >> we received a telephone call that there was a young boy that appeared to be abandoned in the yard. >> reporter: the toddler can't form clear words yet or answer questions about his name. he was wearing a dallas cowboy

shirt when the neighbor discovered him. authorities say he is healthy and unphased by what has happened. police have learned the little boy is in protective services right now. we know there are been a few tips generated, but right now, nothing substantial. and again, detectives will be back here into police headquarters after 7:00, 7:30. police are investigating several overnight robberies near the berkeley campus. there have been four incidents in the area between midnight and 2:30 this morning. police say they did take one man into custody, but they are trying to figure out if he is responsible for all four robberies. police are looking for a suspect who they say shot ask killed one man and injured another. officers got several calls reporting shots. when they arrived at the scene,

they found two 28-year-old men suffering from gunshot ones. both victims were transported to the hospital where one of them died. right now, there is no description of the suspects. two wild life organizations are asking for the public's help to help catch whoever is responsible for a disturbing case of abuse. they say someone has been cut you have beer cans and putting them around sea gull's necks at least two have been found like this since september. sightings can be reported to the bird rescue. a $2,000 reward is being offered in this case. the biggest crash that we have that is affecting the most people would be southbound 101. i want to take you through this. both my photographer and i have seen this before, if you will pan to the right and somehow

the ramp, that ramp that comes in from 880 getting opt southbound 101, the truck that come around the corner, and if they have lost any control at all, it comes down here and then right over, right about here. and i have seen it many times. the truck is going too slow. sorry, going too fast. and there's maybe some overcorrection involved and flips over there. is like the third one many the last little while. meanwhile, all the lanes are closed. and southbound 101, you can see southbound 101 is very slow approaching the 880 interchange near the airport. so bad shot, bad spot for trucks. especially for drivers who aren't aware that that ramp is so curvy. and they end p on the side. they're trying to get to right the truck nowt. going to take at least another hour. let's move along and take a look at westbound highway 4 up to the grade. not too bad. this is a typical commute.

welcome back. a quick look at that time top stories we are following for you right now. oak l.a.p.d. police will have extra officers onduty when he is sentenced tomorrow. he will be sentenced for his involuntary manslaughter conviction. a airline jumbo jet blew one of its engine and the debris fell onto villages. the jet made an emergency landing in singapore. they are now grounded all of their air bus 380 jumbo jets until they figure out the cause of the engine problem. president barack obama now reaching out to republicans after their election victory in the house of representatives.

the president says he is ready to talk about republican priorities, but he said he is not willing to repeal his health care plan. an overnight fire created scary moments for people in an apartment building. that started at about 3:00 this morning. we just got an inside look at the damage and joinings us now from the scene. good morning. >> reporter: well, good morning. you know, the damage inside this apartment building is extensive. the crews just put up the tape that you see behind me. but memos ago, they took us inside where a good portion of the apartment complex is gutted. >> you wouldn't have been able to get through this. >> reporter: fire officials say the flames broke out in the bedroom of a first floor apartment just before 3:00 this morning and. those quickly spread to the second and third floors. we are here near the intersection of wood side road. crew hearsay to evacuate 40 people are varying levels of

disabilities through narrow halways that did present a challenge. firefighters say smoke detecters went off early aletterring residentses and that gave the jump start to the evacuation process. >> the smoke detecters activated so that got them evacuating ahead of time. that was important that the system worked like it was supposed to. >> reporter: luckily, no one was injured and a lot of folks were shaken up. many were on medication. so accommodations are being made. these folks were loaded opt a bus and taken to the community center. red cross is working with the fire department right now. and once the sun comes up, investigator will arrival to try and piece together thousand fire started. once again, firefighters say smoke detecters went off. and they want to remind you at home, this week send daylight savings. this is the time to change the batteries.
