good afternoon. topping our news this noontime, a mother who admits to abandoning her young son is now under arrest. the boy was left outside an apartment complex in san pablo yesterday. the mother turned herself into police this morning. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now with more on the charges the mother faces and what's happening to her child. good afternoon jade. >> reporter: good afternoon. we're live at police headquarters where they've told us this mother found herself in over her head. and then she abandoned her toddler. instead of asking for help in a san pablo neighborhood. the woman huddled in the backseat of the squad car turned herself in this morning. she abandoned her one and a half year old little boy leaving him all alone in a san pablo neighborhood. police arrested her after she arrived at police headquarters declaring what she did. >> she saw the media reports this morning and saw that we were looking for her and she contacted us and came to the

police department. so far we've learn she told us she felt she was an unfit mother and somebody else could care for her child better than her. >> reporter: she now faces child endangerment and desertion charged. she left her son in front of an apartment complex a block from san pablo avenue yesterday morning. a neighbor found the boy. >> he's a fine little black soul across the street over there. he was happy to see me. he was about that big. if he'd stepped out in front of a car, car would have killed him. i walked over and asked him could i pick him up. i gave him a little kiss. >> reporter: today in the neighborhood where the boy was found there was relief the mother turned up. but also regret the mother did not know she had other options besides deserting her child. >> he was just crying. he was crying. you know, they do like have resources like when parents get in a crisis or whether or not they have the crisis nursery

and stuff like that. i heard of places that will take you know if you're going through something they'll keep their baby for you. >> reporter: san pablo police say they are familiar with the 40-year-old richmond mother. she's had runins with police before. she has four other children. none of them are in her custody. the one and a half-year-old is now in child protective services. samuel is in martinez jail. bail set at $20,000. live in san pablo, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, jade. reminder california has a safely surrender baby law allows parents or legal guard ins to surrender a baby within 72 hours of birth at a hospital or designated fire station without prosecution. there is also an organization in concord called bay area crisis nursery. it offers family who is are facing a crisis a safe place to leave their children 11 years old and under no questions asked. a crash early this morning in east oakland left two people

dead. it happened at 106th avenue and macarthur boulevard near the city limits. the chp was following one of the cars involved after a driver refused to stop. before they could pull him over he crashed into another car killing himself and the other driver. we're learning more about that other driver. a father of three. ktvu's kraig debro has details. >> reporter: 32-year-old mark driving to work this morning when a man driving away from police struck his suv and killed the father of three stepchildren. >> breathtaking. it's hard because every day that's their dad. that's their dad. that's their friend. >> reporter: police say he was killed by a 19-year-old man driving a bmw. that man also died in the crash. that chp tried to stop the unidentified man for speeding on 580 westbound at 1:45 this morning. instead the driver took off but exited the freeway a few miles

away. at that very moment he was driving west on 106th avenue on his way to work as a suect driving north on macarthur. >> as a result of the collision two people fatalled out. they didn't make it. >> reporter: he died at the scene. this morning and in disbelief his parents came to the intersection where their son lost his life. his mom recovered two rings. family heirlooms she had just given to her son. >> he's so quiet. he's been a good guy. >> reporter: at the family's oakland laurel district home we were shown dozens of pictures. even one from when mark was on channel 2's romper room. the intersection of 106th avenue and macarthur has always been dangerous but never has it in recent memory been deadly. in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. a court hearing today for one of the accused kid naryps of jaycee dugard. the attorney representing nancy garrido wants to keep documents sealed argues that releasing

them could harm her right to a fair trial. holding her captive for 18 years. the sentencing of mesherle takes place tomorrow in los angeles. former bart police officer could get anywhere from probation to 14 years behind bars for the killing of oscar grant. there's some concern that there will be public unrest again similar to what happened after the verdict was announced last summer. businesses are doing what they can to prepare for that possibility. tara joins us now with details on that part of the story. good afternoon. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. we are in front of the liquor store off 12th and franklin. you can see it's been boarded up. this extends all the way around the side of the building. now we talked to the store owner inside and he says that this area has been targeted in the past and they simply didn't want to take any chances tomorrow. now moments ago we spoke with management at union bank just

down the street from here where workers are hauling large pieces of plywood to the windows to be nailed down. there are also signs posted that the bank will be closing its doors at 1:00 tomorrow. we talked to corporate officials in los angeles by phone to confirm they are shutting down this branch as a precautionary measure. remember this past july when mesherle was convicted of involuntary manslaughter. protesters took to the streets, vandalizing businesses, smashing windows, looting, causing thousands of dollars in damage. demonstrations also happened days after grant's killing which protesters say were fueled by the police's failure to arrest mesherle. in the wake extensive damage to the city of oakland. so, again, as with the verdict city leaders and police are working together to prevent any outbreaking of violence this time around. police have been preparing in case of any potential disturbans putting in a call for help from other agencies if needed. but the police chief today is remaining positive. >> i think there was a lot more energy we were picking up in

july. this time i don't think we're picking up the level of energy. hopefully we'll go through this and it will be a minor speed bump. >> reporter: but disagreement over what mesherle's actual sentence is could be heating up. the former bart officer has been convicted of involuntary manslaughter with a gun enhancement for killing officer grant. the unarmed 22-year-old was shot in the back on the fruit vale bart station platform in 2009. many legalists are weighing in saying the gun tack changes the meaning. this makes all the difference behind bars or if he'll receive probation. of course what happens in the courtroom could trickle down here to the streets of oakland. live in oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you. ktvu.com has a mesherle tab on the front page. if you click that you'll find a complete time line of the oscar grant-mesherle story. there's also video interviews

police in san pablo investigating a crash this morning in which a car left a gaping hole in the front of a video store. officers say the driver told them she was parking in front of the block buster store when her brakes failed and the car went through the front window. no one was injured. the store will remain closed indefinitely while repairs are made. traffic back to normal this noontime on highway 101 in san jose after an early morning

crash that tied up the commute. it started around 4:30 when a big rig overturned just south of the transition ramp to interstate 880. that closed all but one lane of the southbound traffic. chp says things were back to normal by about 7:15. dozens of redwood city residents ran from their apartments early this morning to escape a fast moving fire. the fire started around 3:00 a.m. in a three story building on lin den street. about 40 people were evacuated. most were elderly or disabled. but fortunately no one was hurt. the fire spread so fast however many people were caught off guard. and some ran outside without shirts or shoes. >> i go in my bathroom and there's smoke coming out. and i can feel all this heat you know the heat. and i said that's it. i'm out of here. >> investigators believe the fire started in a first floor bedroom and rapidly spread to the second and third floors.

they say smoke alarms helped save some lives. in the meantime the red cross is helping people displaced by the fire. president only baa ma is trying to retake the political initiative after tuesday's victory for house republicans. in a cabinet meeting this morning he said the critical need right now is to create a better working relationship between the white house and the new congressional leadership. >> i congratulated the republicans and consoled some of our democratic friends about the results. i think it's clear that the voters sent a message. which is they want us to focus on the economy and jobs. >> the president called for a bipartisan meeting with congressional leaders two weeks from today. senate minority leader welcomes the opportunity to talk to the president. he's also throwing down the gauntlet in a battle to preserve tax cuts and bailouts, shrink government and repeal health reform legislation. >> the only way to do all of

those things is to put someone in the white house who won't veto any of these things. >> the president has hinted he's willing to extend busch era tax cut for americans but only for a year or two. he's also open to some tweaking of health reform. the change of power in washington may mean major challenges for california's high speed bullet train project. the incoming head of the house transportation committee says he does not agree with the funding for some national projects although he did not specifically mention california. the california rail authority is still expecting at least $15 billion of federal funding for the rail project. but with nancypelosi losing her position at speaker of the house that may be more difficult to secure. by the way there is a public meeting about the proposed rail line san jose city hall tonight. two days after election day two local races remain undecided with results that are still too close to call. in the race for state attorney general, san francisco democrat

harris has a very narrow lead over the republican candidate coolly. still thousands of provisional and late absentee ballots to be counted. harris' campaign is expressing confidence that after all the votes are in she will come out ahead. harris san francisco district attorney trailed in early returns tuesday. at one point cool lee district attorney for los angeles declared victory then canceled a victory news conference yesterday because of the uncertainty of the outcome. still unclear whether incumbent will return to capitol hill in january. democrat mcamericanny leads republican challenger by just 121 votes in the east bay's eleventh congressional district. he is seeking a third term in both of these undecided races could be several weeks until a winner is declared. california park officials are scrambling to save state parks after the defeat of proposition 21. the measure would have raised

half a billion dollars for parks from an increase in vehicle licensing fees. recent budget deficits have already forced partial closures and service cuts at some state parks. now park officials warned those reductions will likely continue over the next year. that could include a decrease in rangers, campgrounds and picnic areas. hall of fame baseball manager spark coy anderson has died. a family spokesman says he died from complications from dementia one day after being placed in hospice care. anderson managed the cincinnati reds and detroit tigers and first manager to win a world series title in both the american and national league. anderson is also the only manager to leave two ball clubs in career wins. he was 76 years old. some estimates say up to one million people jammed the streets of san francisco for what could be a once in a lifetime event. yesterday for the parade and rally. another nice day today. that's right. in fact temperatures already beginning to warm up into the 70s. but we have some big changes to talk about as we head into the weekend. right now not much in the way of fog out there. we could have some patchy fog hanging out near parts of the shoreline. few high clouds skirting through the bay area or floating through the neighborhoods. especially up north bay. santa rosa airport reporting partly cloudy skies at last check. in the east bay view toward walnut creek. see high clouds off in the distance. currently walnut creek already checking in 74 degrees. high clouds today still on the warm side. partly cloudy for tonight. more clouds expected for your friday. and look at that. we re-introduce rain chances for this weekend especially for one part of your bay area weekend. san a fell 68. oakland 71. san jose at 74. livermore already in the upper 70s right around 77 degrees. you see this satellite a few high clouds moving into the bay area for today. there's a lot of activity out

here in the pacific. this will factor in our forecast tomorrow first with an increase in the clouds. no rain drops expected for your friday. look what happens into saturday. there's the possibility of a sprinkle or a light shower. nothing major. it's only a chance. and then sunday we increase the rainfall potential and also increase the rain coverage especially up in the north bay. you can see those brighter reds move into the picture. that core responds to moderate to heavy rain. keep an eye on that for the second half of the weekend. for today this afternoon at 3:00 temperatures upper 60s, 70s to right around 80 degrees. by 6:00 partly cloudy for this evening and scattered clouds by 9:00 this evening. temperatures around 55 to 60 degrees. here's a look at the numbers. you can see the upper 60s right near the immediate shoreline. san francisco just beautiful in the mid-70s at 75. fairfield right around 79. kind of has that little bit of a humidity element to our forecast today. feels a bit humid. san jose upper 70s. morgan hill around 80. and half-moon bay tops out 68

degrees. here is a look ahead. your five-day forecast. notice into your friday gradually thicken up the clouds throughout the afternoon hours. those clouds could produce a sprinkle or maybe a light shower into saturday. only about a 30% to 40% chance. and then into sunday plan on the rain clouds especially up in the north bay. but this system, tori, is a quick mover. as you can see by monday and also into tuesday of next week we are talking about a dry weather pattern. don't forget to change the clocks. fall back before you go to bed saturday night. okay. thank you, mark. qantas airlines grounded all six of its air bus jumbo jets after an engine blew out with more than 450 people on board. there were no injuries but passengers describe a frightening experience. >> i was sitting just behind the wing. so we thought just a loud thud. everybody sort of pretty shaken by it. can imagine how. in indonesia. qantas says it's grounding the fleet until it can determine the cause of the engine failure. it's not known if ash from the erupting volcano in indonesia may be to blame. a special event today to help bay area veterans get jobs. we'll tell you where and when. also believe it or not there has never been a store like this one in san francisco. grand opening took place less than one hour ago.

taking a live look at the big board on wall street. it's a good rally so far today one day after the federal reserve announced a $600 billion plan to stimulate the economy. also quite a few retailers reporting earnings today and indicate a modest october made for some holiday deals. right now dow currently up 198. nasdaq up 32. and the s&p 500 up 19. now earlier today the labor department had worst than expected news about the latest jobless claims. 20,000 more americans filed for unemployment benefits last week than the week before. that puts the number at 457,000. the same level as at the end of last year which indicates there has been no change in the overall job picture in the last eleven months. bay area employers are meeting with veterans in san jose today. the honor a hero, hire a vet,

job fair is underway part of a 2007 governor's initiative to match veterans with employers. veterans can find out about job training and career options and meet with employers who have high quality job openings. the job fair runs until 3:00 this afternoon at the san jose airport garden hotel. that's at 1740 north first street in san jose. a grand opening ceremony held in san fran key san francisco this morning. lowe's the first time the retailer has opened a store in the city. mayor joined community leaders and employees for the opening. the department store says the opening will create about 200 new jobs. tonight at 5:00, word is that governor-elect jerry brown is going to sacramento. he's supposed to be meeting with lawmakers today. we'll be there for his first appearance at the state capitol. that story and more coming up in our next newscast at ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00.
