that sentence saying it was far too short given the crime committed. we have live team coverage tonight with reporters in position here in the bay area and in los angeles. we will go to rita williams who was in the courtroom when mehserle was sentenced, good evening rita. >> reporter: needles >> reporter: need less to say it was a very emotional 4-1/2 hours inside this courtroom today. former bart police officer mehserle came into court this morning looking just like this. his hands shackled at his waist, this time in front wearing the high security orange jail jump suit. he scared straight ahead not looking at the five relatives of oscar grant. we told the judge the impact the killing has had on them and asking for the maximum sentence

of 14 years. an aunt, an uncle and sophina mason saying, i have to go to the grave site now to see grant. grant's mother wanda johnson, quote how do you explain this to all the people of color who face brutality. i love every day of my life in pain. then mehserle stood and read a statement. it's tough for me to admit failure but that's exactly what happened. i wish i could bring mr. grant back. i am truly sorry my actions took the life of a son, a father, a brother. i hope some day they will be able to forgive me. then repeating part of what he told me in jail last week. >> i didn't want this at all.

and i know they didn't want this -- and i will forever be sorry for what happened. >> reporter: robert perry then threw out the jury's gun enhancement. saying there was not enough evidence to show that mehserle intended to use his gun and not his taser. it could have been four years, he sentenced mehserle to two years for involuntary manslaughter. with credit already served in jail, 292 days, that means mehserle could be released from state prison in six or seven months. reporting live in los angeles, rita williams ktvu channel 2 news. reaction to the judge's decision today was swift and it continues to grow. we heard from oscar grant's family members pretty soon after the judge ruled on the sentencing. our claudine wong was the first one to bring us the news of the sentence. she is live now right outside

that l.a. courthouse with more. claudine-- >> reporter: gasia, there's no doubt that the grant family is disappointed and frustrated and angry about this sentence. in contrast mehserle's attorney says his client was given great hope today in that courtroom. >> we want justice for oscar grant. >> reporter: outside the courthouse there was passion and emotion that grew seemingly by the minute. as the sentencing hearing took place inside, our cameras watched as punches were thrown between people outside the courthouse. we don't know what happened but it ended with several people detained by police. inside one person was kicked out of court after an outburst there. after sentencing, family and friends of oscar grant gathered and his uncle talked angrily about the system he says failed. >> judge perry said it was clear that oscar was resisting arrest. so the system is saying, yes,

oscar is at fault. >> reporter: upstairs there was a far different scene. michael rain said he won't rest until his client is free. but he also said mehserle said he was given great hope today and feels closer than ever to being free and once again seeing his son. >> he wanted to give his family a hug, that wasn't possible but he asked me to do that for him. >> reporter: the protest continued, but even as grant supporters vowed to continue fighting, the weight of today's decision was easy to see. >> i hope the department of justice steps in. i hope. i don't know, right now i feel like an elephant is on my head. i don't know i feel so let down. >> reporter: so mehserle is now back in the los angeles county jail shortly after the sentencing. the grant family and friends also left. we're told some are likely already back in oakland. live here in los angeles, claudine wong, ktvu channel two news. it was the office of

alameda county district attorney o' malley that prosecuted mehserle. he gave us this statement, we need to assess what the judge has legally done. we're waiting for our lawyers to come back from los angeles. look at the record, look to assess what the options are, we'll decide where to go from there. the city of oakland has been bracing for what might happen in reaction to today's news. john sasaki is live waiting to see what may happen. >> reporter: that is an agitated crowd of hundreds of people outside of city hall that has been growing all day in strength and numbers. the sentence has left many of them feeling that they cannot find justice in this country unless they resort to extreme measures. >> it's a pattern. why are the people who get killed in these street, why are

they all african american males. >> reporter: some who stopped by just to watch -- >> i believe that oscar grant was murdered. there's a taser and there's a gun. isn't there a weight difference them? >> a lot of times you have to resort to violence to wake people up. sometimes peace just doesn't work. compromise doesn't work. i mean that man died violently. okay he didn't die peacefully. so where's the justice there? >> reporter: oakland police are out in force along with officers from agencies around the bay area to try to stop any violence from happening. jane bruner said the city wasn't taking any chances and

closing city hall at 8:00. >> i think we're just taking precautions because the last rally did not end very well. so we're just getting staff home early in case there's any problems. >> reporter: i spoke to a retired officer he told me that he didn't think anything was going to happen tonight. anything was going to go out of control based on what he saw in the crowd. but about five minutes ago, he told me i might be changing that view because he did see some things that things might actually happen. i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2 news. oscar grant's family said after the sentence that mehserle did not apologize directly to them. >> when rita williams from ktvu did an interview, allowing him to apologize, he not one time in any of those exclusive interview, we're talking about for almost a week, acknowledged

the family or everyone stated he was sorry. >> here is what mehserle said during his interview last month with rita. >> i can't say how sorry i am enough. because there's nothing i can say or do that would ever bring him back and i understand that. you know i value human life and i value life. >> once again that was rita williams exclusive interview with mehserle which we aired last week on ktvu channel 2 news. oakland city leaders are calling for calm while acknowledging there is unrest in people's hearts and minds. >> reporter: the city of oakland is presenting a united front with the mayor and police chief calling for piece. in a press conference this afternoon, police chief bats said officers will do all they can to keep the area safe. and reminded oakland residents quote, this is our city where we live, work and go to school.

officers guarded oakland's emergency operation today which has become command headquarters for all violence prevention efforts. mayor ron dellums says that people should look to oscar grant's family to decide whether justice has been done. >> it's very clear to me in observing the response of the family that this judgment was met with anger, was met with disaappointment, was met with great pain and extraordinary hurt -- disappointment. the major said he understand but asked for peace tonight. >> it is still my hope that people will express their anger, will express their disappointment, their outrage, their pain in a manner that is nonviolent, in a manner that is not destructive to our community. >> reporter: as you can see from the air, oakland officers

are already out in a large show of force with police cars driving into position. police chief anthony bats said although people are -- to free speech, officers will be out in full force. oakland police are not commenting officially on the strength of their numbers or outside assistance. but ktvu has learned over 18 outside agencies are ready and waiting to help oakland officers if necessary. some are already rolling into town while others are on stand by. this is a night law enforcement is very ready to take on. live in the newsroom, priya davis clemens. with memories still fresh

we are learning new information about the killing of a writer and publicist in san francisco. police say the suspect used a disguise to get inside her apartment. authories are also releasing the sketch and telling us that the suspect may have been injured during the killer. david steveson is live in the city tonight with more on this -- david stevenson is live in the city with more on this. >> reporter: police released this sketch on a man who resembles the suspect. they say he dressed as a utility worker to gain entry to her apartment. >> it's terrifying and yeah, it does not make my feel good about walking by ourselves right now. >> reporter: 46-year-old san. san fran sims cowriter and

publicist was killed in her own apartment. >> person of interest is a white male in his late 30s. >> reporter: the suspect responded at about 6:15 sunday night. investigators say he wore a hard hat, a green safety vest and utility belt and carried a tool box. >> the suspect posed as a utility worker to gain access into the building. the suspect knocked on several doors under the guides of checking for a gas leak. >> reporter: harran was killed in her apartment. she had just returned from a trip to argentina with her mother. >> she just spent about a week and a half with her mother traveling. and of course her mother is devastated because she's going what if i would have stayed, what if i would have done this. >> reporter: investigators say they've recovered several items

stolen from harran's apartment and say there are other clues that may help the public spot the suspect. >> the suspect may have suffered an injury to his left hand. this hand may be heavily bandaged in some fashion. >> reporter: pg & e told us this afternoon that they had no crews in the area. investigators are asking anyone who may have seen a man resembling the suspect in this sketch to call police. firefighters are battling a two alarm fire at a church. the fire is in the 22,000 block of meckland avenue east. the hayward spanish seventh day

in election 2010 it appears that city councilwoman jean quan made oakland's new mayor. perrata did not get 50% plus one vote. so the registrar of voters began tallying the voters second and third choices and eliminating candidates with the fewest votes. the unofficial count shows quan

this afternoon. that a los angeles judge sentenced mehserle to two years in prison with credit for time served. the judge threw out the gun enhancement in mehserle's conviction. that left the sentence for just involuntary manslaughter. the judge sentenced mehserle for the minimum sentence for that conviction, two years. the sentence for manslaughter alone without the gun enhancement is four years. i drove up broadway this afternoon, i counted more than 20 business that have already been boarded up on broadway alone. jana katsuyama is live with how worried business owners are tonight. >> reporter: pretty worried. right now things are calm now along telegraph. many business are already s hutdown. this is city dental, they said

people who have been slain by police in brutality cases. >> we're open and we plan to be open throughout the day unless something happens out there. >> reporter: police have posted these signs throughout the downtown area saying no parking until 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. we've seen police officers from monterey and salinas and oakland police telling us that they are going to move in quickly if there is any trouble to make sure all of these stores are safe. reporting live in oakland, jana katsuyama, ktvu channel 2 news. back now to our live pictures from above oakland. you can see there's a number of people there. we should el emphasize that so far everything has been pretty peaceful. people have been going up to the pie microphone and speaking about how angry they are about the mehserle

sentencing. there are hundreds of police officers on the scene. a lot of them out of sight. the objective for the oakland police department is obviously to keep things peaceful. says they're going to give these protesters their space. we'll try to keep them in a specific area, but if they decide to march again, they're going to do nothing to try and provoke them. but if anyone gets out of hand, that is when the police department says it will crack down. here's what's next for mehserle. egg experts say that with credit for time serves mehserle could serve another six months and then be released for parol. you can follow the story, go to ktvu.com. the labor department released it's monthly employment report today and it showed the largest increase in jobs since april. companies added more than 150,000 jobs last month. mostly in health care, retail and business services. on the downside, the unemployment rate held steady

oakland police say that two men ran away from their vehicle after smashing their car into a home. police are still investigating

what caused this crash. vallejo police are searching for three young robbers. investigators say what's unusual here is that all three of them are females. investigators say the three have robbed at least four victims including this attack that was captured on a surveillance camera. watch what happens here, the victims have included a 13-year- old girl and three women who were middle age or elderly. >> i can't say that these type of incidents never happened before. but it is highly unusual in a sense that all of our victims are usually elderly, handicapped and the fact that the suspects are females is a little bit unusual as well. >> witnesses describe the robbers as black females 17 to 19 years old, 5'2" to 5'5" tall. police say in each case they got away in a grey 1980s volvo. alameda police have arrested one man but are still looking for another one in the

nasa scientists are marveling at new pictures coming in. it sent back these detailed pictures taken from 435 miles away from the comet passing at a speed of 250-miles-per-hour. scientists call it the most expensive observation of a comet discovery. nasa says it's postponing the launch of discovery until the end of the month so it can fix the fuel leak. this is the fourth delay in one
