mayor. introducing an ordinance outlining the process for selecting someone to fill the post temporarily much state senator mark leno is reportedly among those expressing interest in the job. mayor newsome's current mayoral term is scheduled to expire in 2012. nearly a week after the election the race for state attorney general still too close to call tonight. latest numbers show los angeles county district attorney steve coolley ahead of san francisco d.a. carmelo harris. there is a difference of just over 19,000 votes. state elections officials say a winner may not be declared for several more weeks as they finish counting mail in, provisional and damaged ballots. the question of who will be oakland's next mayor will not be answered tonight. election officials say they were not able to complete the ballot counting as planned. the latest numbers put jean quan in the lead with 51% of

the vote while don perata has 47%. >> reporter: here inside the county building workers are counting votes still right now. voters will have to wait awhile longer to find out who the next mayor will be. going into today jean quan had a 51% to roughly 49% lead over former state senate president don perata. don held a commanding double digit lead over quan but factoring in the rank of choice votes in which residents put their first, second and third choices for mayor, quan vaulted to the lead on friday. the registrar of voters explained that the delay is due to a few thousand provisional ballots. >> the ballot has gone perhaps to the wrong polling place and we allow them to vote, of course, but then we have to research whether they are really a registered voter and maybe they just went to the wrong precinct and what we have

to do is we copy that ballot to a ballot from there. so we have several thousand of those. i was hoping to have those done by today but it won't happen. >> we are still cautiously optimistic. we were actually planning a party for our volunteers tonight and we are going to go ahead with that. but we understand now that we may not get results until friday. >> the registrar said counting would continue tonight until about 7:30. perata's spokesman texted me and said the campaign plan is to wait until there is a result. priority is a fair and accurate count. live in oakland ktvu, channel 2news. the bay area branch of the national lawyers guild in san francisco is criticizing the police response to last friday's protest. the group says one of its observers was among the 152 people and said demonstrators were illegally jailed and is asking for all of the charges

against the protestors to be dropped. oakland police say the protest became an illegal gathering when one of the demonstrators grabbed a police officer's gun and tried to point it at the officer. turn in a gun and get a gift card. stockton is the latest california city to try the program to make its streets safer by getting guns off the street. it started in compton in 2005 and has been tried in other cities including san francisco. the governor was in stockton for the announcement. >> every time we make a gun disappear or gun is being surrendered or a gun is taken off the streets, our neighborhoods and our families are safer. >> the governor has said he would like other cities and counties to adopt the program and governor elect jerry brown said he is a supporter of the gift for guns program. another egg recall going on across much of the country including california. thousands of specific egg products have been pulled off

shelves after the food and drug administration told a major distributor that some of its eggs had tested positive for salmonella. robert honda is live in the south bay tonight with more on this. robert? >> reporter: well, frank, starting with the good news, this recall will be much different than the one we saw last august and consumers will be able to tell if they have a bad batch. so far they all have the same plant numbers. that's the number right here on the carton just below the sell buy or expiration date. >> reporter: she did a lot of shopping today but eggs were not on her list. a voluntary recall is underway after the fda told them that eggs at one of its farms tested positive for salmonella. the tainted eggs were bought in october from ohio fresh eggs processed and repackaged by the company's green forest facility in arkansas then distributed. the recall follows one in

august and september. >> makes me leery about buying eggs and eating them of course because you never know what's going on and what you're going to get. that type of thing. pretty much makes me nervous. >> what do you about it. >> don't usually eat eggs for a week. >> reporter: the recalled egg products all have the same plant number. 1457. brand names include sun valley, just the large sized eggs. sunny meadow ranging from jumbo, large and extra large, springfield grocer and jane's farm medium sized eggs. >> i think there are a lot loopholes they need to work with. we don't have enough people to oversee what's going on with the egg farmers. >> reporter: santa clara county dr. sarah cote said it started after salmonella started showing up. this is a cautionary recall. >> we don't know if people have become ill as a result of it. none have been reported. >> reporter: dr. cody says

property safe at stations and on b.a.r.t trains. officers are also reminding people about the safety escort service they provide. people can also ask the officers questions. the safety clinic is supposed to wrap up at 8:30 p.m. tonight and it is free. the santa clara city council is set to vote tomorrow on a plan to lay off 80 city workers in order to stave off a budget shortfall next year. pink slips will be sent out december 9th unless workers agree to 12 unpaid furlough days next year or a pay cut. deputy fire marshal, electric maintenance workers, library assistants and dispatchers would be laid off. researchers are starting up a clinical trial to test a controversial treatment for children with autism and hope to see if autistic children can benefit from regular doses of an enzyme to help them digest proteins which may in turn improve their brain function

and ease some symptoms. the theory is controversial because there is no evidence that it is a direct cause of autism. george clooney will be speaking at stanford university next hour. he will be joined by another african. the two are trying to raise awareness of sudan and he wants to bring attention to a january referendum of whether southern sudan should become a separate nation and it could trigger a civil war. seems like everything with airlines comes with a cost these days. until now. what several air carriers are offering travelers for free over the holidays. bay area crabbers and fishermen have had some tough years behind them. the question is, how will this year's crab season be. a reliable prediction still ahead. >> i've got the latest computer

the commercial crab season begins this weekend and livelihood of many local fishermen and women hang in the balance. ktvu consumer editor with us now. what the upcoming season might be like. tom. >> reporter: whether you want it flash frozen or fresh from the boat the fact is nothing happens until these pots and thousands of them are full. the new seeker, a sport crab boat for day trippers pulled into emeryville marina sport fishing center late this afternoon. non-commercial crabbing opened saturday.

every customer caught the legal six crab limit. >> it was heaven. nice dunges crab. beautiful season this year. >> reporter: over in san francisco, commercial crab boats are gathering en masse at fisherman's wharf. one oregon crabber says many are betting that this is the place to be. >> i heard that san francisco right now has some of the best crabbing in front of it. so a lot of the big boats up and down the coast, they are all on their way. >> reporter: jay, captain of the emeryville boat, confirms what the commercial crabbers believe. >> anywhere from 50 to 20 crabs to the trap for a short period put in the water, it is incredible. up in my hometown where my boat is going we were only getting 5 to 10 crabs a pot so that's why we came down here. got to chase the money. >> reporter: for commercial crabbers many of the crab may not be ready to harvest because they just molted. >> they shed their shell and

they fill up with water and it takes awhile for the meat to fill in and if it doesn'fill in, you have a big shell but no weight to the product. >> reporter: these and thousands of other commercial pots will be going out to the golden gate this weekend and hopefully this will be the beginning of a new season. but for crab and salmon, they have had a whole lot of problems. a wildlife rescue group is asking the public for help so it can track down sea gulls with beer cans around their neck. catching the birds are not easy. wild rescue says it needs a special net to catch the birds so it can safely remove those beer can collars. >> they will launch like a blanket of netting over a target animal. and that's what we need. >> the remote controlled net costs $4000 and wild rescue is

asking for donations so it can buy one. a $2500 reward is being offered for information leading to whoever is responsible for putting the beer cans around the sea gulls neck. >> the palo alto city council is expected to meet and consider changing its fire code to require a certain kind of smoke alarm to be installed in homes. the city's fire marshal wants to make photo electric smoke detectors mandatory. the proposal would require the alarms to be installed in homes where more than $1000 of construction is taking place and a building permit is required. it would also cover rental housing and homes where property deed is transferred. >> we are hoping that the state of california will adopt these or similar requirements and that will definitely save lives. there is probably about 100 lives that could be saved state wide. >> he adds that the alarms respond quickly to smolder

fires than the typical ionization alarms. palo alto would become the second city to require it joining albany. officials estimate there are more than 50 mobile food vendors in the city every day. many have complained that the process of getting permits to operate is too complicated and they say the fees are too high. >> end up coming just under $10,000. and, really, what that gets you is the ability to park on public property. and so you're working with them and it is quite a process. >> under the plan the public works department will have jurisdiction for the program and vendors could apply for up to five locations at a time. let's check out the forecast and head over to bill in the weather center. bill? >> yes, it was a nice dry day. started off with a heck of a nice saturday then it rained sunday. a lot of rain. up to an inch and a half in many locations in the north bay.

here comes the next weather system. it is outside here very weak. main focus is going to be northern california. far northern california up here. the rain will be coming down up there as we go into tomorrow afternoon and then by late tomorrow afternoon we could see showers as far south as the bay area right down in this area. so we will watch that for you. i'm going to show you the latest computer model but right now a frost advisory to talk about. it is cold this morning, or was cold this morning. it will be colder tomorrow morning and a frost advisory goes into effect for the north bay valleys. temperatures into the low 30s. frost a real possibility. actually, very likely. alexander valley, napa valley, santa rosa up north towards fieldsburg. more clouds tomorrow much not a bad day. but by late afternoon looking for sprinkles. maybe a few light showers. not a big deal. forecast overnight lows 33 in napa. 34 in santa rosa. don't need to hit freezing to get frost, right. the windchill will cool down

more rapidly than the ambient air. tomorrow morning when you go to work you'll be doing some scraping especially in the north bay valleys. tomorrow, we are seeing this system come in. it will warm things up a little bit. gets in late in the afternoon. all the energy is north. what that means for us is what you see here. drip, drip, drip. not a big deal. san jose you may not see anything. it could put a little glaze on the afternoon commute for tomorrow. tuesday afternoon commute might be a little bit wet. the most recent computer model. there we are. 4:00 p.m. on tuesday. that's the afternoon commute. rain north of santa rosa. sprinkles. then everybody gets light sprinkles tomorrow from 5 to 9. we will watch it and i will change it. i won't change it but this model will change tonight and i'll give you the latest up date. so the forecast, five-day forecast shows showers back in the forecast and a big switch around as we begin to warm up. going to be some cold mornings on wednesday and thursday as it was. then much warmer for the weekend. back into the 70s. real neat looking weekend.

dallas looked horrible last night. >> their record is worse than what is happening in san francisco. >> yes. >> so hard times for sports fans down in texas. but, man, after what happened last night against the packers, 35-7 the final score packers had to do something. they beat up on dallas. today the cowboys had to do something. they fired their coach wade phillips and replaced him with their offensive coordinator jason garrett who you may remember was a quarterback at one point with the dallas cowboys. jerry jones, owner of the cowboys, has never fired a coach in mid-season but it was so bad. in fact, they were favored to go to the super bowl by many in the nfc this year but 1-7, that's not going to do it. and you remember not so long ago coach tom cable of the raiders was in a little bit of trouble but three straight wins will cure all and it has. the quarterbacking situation also solid now. jason campbell. remember, he had lost his starting job a few weeks ago to

bruce gradkowski. after bruce got hurt all campbell has done is lead them to the three straight wins. leading the second half comeback and the raiders eventually win it in overtime. bruce gradkowski expected to be healthy again but sounds like bruce won't exactly be getting his job back real soon. >> i really haven't waiverred but i do have a belief in me about when you're dealing it and you've got the hot hand and things are going in the right direction for your football team. why would you make a change? and that's what i think right now. but in the back of my mind i also say it is not really making a change. i made the change with bruce. leaning with staying with the hot hand. that's where i'm at. >> why change horses now. high school games of the week. palo alto against saratoga.
