i'm jade hernandez. a three alarm fire. we'll have more details live from san carlos coming up. and the morning commute has a couple of spots where it's already beginning to show signs of a slow tuesday morning. it's cold out there. i don't want to say it's a three dog night but it's cold. question is will we see more clouds and rain later today? a man is dead after running from oakland police. the reason officers were called to a laundry mat just before that shooting. details just ahead. good morning to you. welcome to tuesday. it's november 9th. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. let's check in with steve paulson. very cold overnight, steve. >> that is correct. good morning. we have mostly clear skies. clouds increasing towards the north bay. you'll stay in the 50s today with rain possible later this afternoon. south bay and most of the peninsula east bay sun then clouds. but highs today anywhere from

the mid-50s to maybe some mid- 60s farther south towards the santa clara valley. rain is likely north later this afternoon and tonight. here's sal. steve, right now traffic looks good coming in to san francisco as you can see from our live picture. it is getting more crowded though almost everywhere you look as people start joining the commute. we arrive at the peak at about 7:00. right now bay bridge looks good. the metering lights should go on in the next 10 or 15 minutes. it's 6:00. back to dave and pam. we are following breaking news out of san carlos. right now crews are on the scene of a warehouse fire on quarry road. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us now to tell us about the rock star connection to this early morning fire. jade. >> reporter: good morning. we've learned so much more in the last 20 minutes. well-known rocker neil young's storage facility caught fire around 3:00 this morning. i can show you we're about a block away from this facility. police are keeping us back behind their cars right here at quarry old county road.

inside this storage facility memorabilia firefighters tried to save and salvage this morning. >> it's going to be a significant amount that we're going to be salvaging. the structure about a million dollars lost. about $250,000 to the structure. about $750,000 to contents at least at this point just from an observation. again, we want to be real methodical about what we can salvage. we want to do it in the daylight and make sure we're looking at the future and according to to the young family can store those things. >> reporter: they want to be methodical because neil young has stored guitars, half a dozen vintage cars and lots of backstage equipment inside of this storage facility this morning. this fire broke out around 2:55 at 593 quarry road. it's not suspicious at this point. we understand several family members from the young family are already here taking pictures going through some of this memorabilia with firefighters. we also understand that family

members have moved some of this memorabilia. what firefighters could not move outside of the facility they have put tarps over just to protect it from other hot spots. firefighters are trying to make sure that this fire didn't spread. they were able to put it out quickly, but they have found that this fire was contained to the front of the warehouse. and at this point, again, as i mentioned it's not suspicious but a lot of important stuff inside to the neil young family and of course representatives are out here going through it as we speak. and as soon as we get more information we'll pass it along to you. reporting live from san carlos this morning, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:03. well, this morning oakland police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting. it happened shortly after 9:30 last night. ktvu's kraig debro just talked to two witnesses. he's with us live from oakland with the details.

good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, dave. those two witnesses they say they were with a third person. so three people said they saw what happened. between the police and the suspect and the witnesses, they were all within about five feet of one another. take a look down the street. you see that power pole right there? according to our witnesses the suspect was sitting right next to that power pole. further down about five feet that's where the witnesses were. in the street about five feet out in front of the suspect that's where both officers were when they shot the suspect. this happened around 9:30 last night. came in as a domestic dispute call from a laundry mat around the corner. now officers got there they ended up chasing the suspect around the corner on seminary and a right turn taken by the suspect and the two officers. they got about ten to twenty feet in and that's when the officers caught up according to our witnesses caught up with the suspect. they grabbed him. he broke free of their grasp

and ran down to the power pole and that's where officers confronted him and that's when they say the suspect was shot. witnesses say the suspect was not armed. >> right now we have not located a weapon. he has not been searched. we're waiting for coroner to come out and do the search. everything still pretty early on in the investigation. >> reporter: that was officer jeff thomas lanight telling us the search had not taken place. if they found a weapon they're not telling us. homicide division would not say anything to us about this investigation right now. typically what happens in situations like these is that the officers involved in the shooting are put on paid administrative leave. we know the oakland homicide is investigating. we know that the internal affairs of the oakland pd investigating and also the alameda county d.a.'s office running a parallel investigation or independent investigation to make sure that they have everything right. now the search for evidence was going on out here until about

5:15 this morning. i spoke to the officers on the scene. they would not say what happened. we're going to again be trying to contact information officers with the oakland p.d. to see if we can gather more information about the circumstances of what happened last night. live in oakland, kraig debro, channel 2 news. time now 6:05. former san francisco police chief has died. he was 60 years old. he was in london where he apparently had a heart attack while out walking his dog. he became police chief in san francisco in 2003 and served for about a year. police officers say he was a larger than life character always cracking jokes. he made headlines during what was dubbed the pa high that gig scandal. he was accused of covering up an incident involving his son who was also a police officer. charges were dismissed and he was cleared. the san francisco police department is considering a memorial service. but there's no word yet on when that might be. this morning cal trans reopened a lane on the san

mateo bridge after it was closed overnight. inspectors checking recent repair work shut down the far right lane westbound at about 8:00 last night. now a 10-inch crack in a support beam was repaired last month. the price tag for the emergency fix is reportedly a million dollars. let's get you to where you need to go this morning. sal's here. how are we looking out there? >> we're looking okay dave and pam right now. as a matter of fact we're doing pretty well if you are driving across any of the bay area. you can see the 101-580 interchange the traffic looks pretty good driving down to the middle of marin county. if you're driving to the toll plaza of the bay bridge, we're getting a little more of a back up now westbound bay bridge. small back up at the toll plaza. those metering lights usually go on about 6:15. contra costa county somewhat surprising it's not bigger than this. but the slow downs already in antioch. concord and walnut creek looking good. on the east bay hayward and

fremont union city still looking well. so far today it's okay. thank you very much. we start off mostly clear. clouds already beginning to move in. it's cold out there. lots of 30s showing up. mid-30s. frost advisory canceled because the clouds are coming in and temperatures won't cool off anymore. they'll stay in the 30s. could be cooler south bay. north bay clouds beginning to move in. if you're to the northed a some clouds to the south decreasing clouds. 30s to start and 40s. mix of sun and clouds. 50s by noon and 3:00 mostly cloudy. north bay could be looking at rain if you're far enough north. far enough south no. we have temperatures very close to yesterday's readings. actually cooled napa off because they'll have too much in the way of cloud cover starting off at 36. clouds coming in you'll be hard pressed to warm up much. 59 in the city didn't change anything there. walnut creek cooled you off from 62 to 60. i saw 37 near walnut creek

right now. 62 yesterday. sitting at 42 right now. palo alto, men lo park, all around 38. livermore concord 38. same for napa and santa rosa. napa down to 35 and now starting to come up because the clouds are coming in. other temperatures boulder creek in the santa cruz mountains 34. woodside 37. lay fayette and alamo 39. 20 up in tahoe. sacramento it's going to be a cold day for you folks and also lake county starting off 30s ending up with 40s and low 50s and rain. this is a very weak system. it's mainly going to the north but will just brush us late in the afternoon and early evening. i don't think south bay sees anything out of this. sun then clouds. afternoon rain light but mainly to the north. 50s and 60s on your temps. cooler with more clouds to the north. little more sun and slightly warmer towards the south. five-day forecast after tomorrow we have clearing and cool conditions on wednesday a cold thursday morning then sunny side up and warmer.

that will carry us into the weekend and beyond. >> all right. time now 6:09. chilly temperatures overnight didn't stop gamers from waiting in line to get their hands on the latest call of duty game. hundreds of people lined up outside the game stop store in san francisco. call of duty black ops went on sale at midnight. more than 4,000 game stop stores all over the nation stayed open late to launch this new game. >> we've been in line since like 6:00 . >> reporter: you know it's midnight right? >> yes. it's about that time. >> when i get home with this game it's going straight toy to my x box and not coming out for 24 hours at least. >> the new call of duty game is expected to smash all the sales records. three million units of the game were preordered in the u.s. before the midnight release. this by the way is the seventh game in the series and accounts for more than $4 billion in sales. that is incredible.

anticipated to determine the winner in the oakland . the latest results from last friday still show jean leading don by less than 2,000 votes. registrar voters plan to announce a winner yesterday afternoon but election workers are still counting provisional ballots. the final results may not be released for several more days. on election night don had a comfortable lead over jean. but when ranked choice votes were counted friday, she pulled ahead. third place candidate says both she and jean employed what has turned out to be a successful campaign strategy for june. they each asked the other's supporters to select them with their second choice votes. >> jean often said to people i would like your number one vote, but if you won't do that please vote for me number two. she consistently used that message. it was even in her final mailer. and that seems to have worked. >> the other campaign released

a statement saying "we remain confident that oakland voters clear first choice preference for senator as oakland's next mayor will hold true once every ballot has been certified and counted." you can find more election coverage including the latest vote count updates by going to our channel 2 website at ktvu.com. click on the election 2010 tab. it's right there at the top of our home page. the death toll from that erupting volcano in indonesia has now reached 153. about 200,000 people have fled to refugee camps. it's been erupting for two weeks now. the biggest eruption on friday entire villages were smothered in fast moving bursts of smoke and rocks racing down the mountain. president obama is being forced to cut short his trip to indonesia because of worries about the ash coming from that value volcano. now the big question is will he

be able to deliver his address to the muslim world. that was supposed to be the center piece of this trip. >> reporter: good morning to you, dave. that's right. it is supposed to be the center piece of this trip. and white house press secretary says as of now it looks like the speech is on track. president obama is using this trip to indonesia to step up his outreach to the muslim world. within the last hour the president and first lady arrived to be guests of honor at a state dinner as the state palace in jakarta. earlier president oment baa ma and the president of indonesia held a joint news conference. and the president called his outreach to muslims earnest and sustained. >> what we're trying to do is to make sure that we are building bridges and expanding our interactions with muslim country countries so that they're not solely focused on

security issues. >> reporter: indonesia is the world's largest muslim country. president obama lived there as a child when his mom married an indonesian man. during my next update in about an hour i'll tell you what the president is saying today about returning to that country. for now live in washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. the department of home land security announced new rules for airplanes. the new guidelines come in response to the recent discovery of bombs hidden inside printers on a cargo plane headed from yemen to the u.s. toner and ink cartridges weighing more than one pound are now prohibited in carry on or checked baggage on passenger flights and all items on cargo planes determined to be high risk will go through additional screening. the supreme court has decided not to hear a california case challenging the new health care reform law. the lawsuit by a conservative california group claims the new law's unconstitution because it requires everyone to have health insurance.

the case had previously been dismissed by a federal court judge in san diego. that judge said that it's premature to hear the case at this point because no one can show they've been injured by the new law. the new law requires everyone to have health insurance by 2014. time now 6:17. planning to sue the oakland catholic dye seize. she was allegely molested between 1980 and 1981. the lawsuit says catholic school teachers knew of the abuse but reported her to the die yo cease instead of to child protective services as required by the law. the monosenior accused in this case died back in 1986. 6:18 is the time right now. let's go back to sal to check in on the traffic. >> all right. pam and dave, right now traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area if you are driving on highway 4 it is getting more

lafayette, alamo 39. plenty of 30s. weak system coming in. again, mainly to the north. but it's going to be a cold, cloudy day for some north of santa rosa, and some light rain will come in. after that we're done. we're good to go for a while. sun then clouds. afternoon rain mainly north bay but a cold morning with 30s and 40z. 50s and 60s on the highs. more clouds to the north. more sun to the south. clearing, cool on wednesday. after a cold thursday morning sunny side up and warmer. take that into the weekend. pam and dave. thank you, steve. a new ucla study shows americans choosing or being forced into medical insurance plans with high deductibles could prompt a health care crisis down the road. three million californians have high deductible plans and more than one sixth of them have put off seeing the doctor and many say cost is the major reason avoiding the doctor. and gold prices to another record. gold will open at $1403 in new york this morning. experts say many people are worried that the federal

reserve's plan to pump $600 billion into the economy will boost inflation and drive down the value of the dollar against other currencies. chocolate is an affordable luxury now for most people. but food industry experts are predicting a worldwide shortage that could make ch expensive as caviar. most cocoa beans are groan in africa. but farmers there are switching crops saying chocolate makers aren't paying them enough. demand is already greater than supply. time now 6:20. hundreds of thousands of eggs being yanked off the market in a new recall after salmonella was found at a farm in ohio. the nation's largest egg seller says all of the eggs come from ohio fresh eggs. california was among the eight states where they were sold. so far no illnesses from the eggs have been reported. now all of the recalled eggs came from plant number 1457. they're sold under a variety of brand names including san valley large sized eggs, sunny

good morning. traffic is moving along very well at the golden gate bridge, san mateo bridge, richmond bridge. at the bay bridge though i can't say it's moving well anymore. as a matter of fact it's backed up now. they've turned the metering lights on. at least a ten minute wait if you're at the end of the line. >> thank you, sal. today the san francisco board of supervisors plans to ask its staff to come one a plan for replacing mayor when he takes office as california's new lieutenant governor. voters will not be asked who they want to finish serving out his last year in office. for that to happen he would have had to have resigned his

post as mayor yesterday. and a special election would have been called. a group of girl scouts is singing the praises of an offduty security guard who recovered their stolen cash box. police say a thief posed as a customer and stole the girl scouts' money outside the safeway on saturday. the thief just happened to run past an offduty security guard who started chasing him. the suspect a 15-year-old eventually dropped the cash box. police later arrested that suspect at his home. time now 6:25. the recent doesst they are san bruno has a lot of people worried about the safety of pg&e gas pipelines. but there are some other aging transmission lines that are also causing big concerns. there are almost 1,000 miles of fuel lines that run throughout the bay area. these lines have also been here for many years. they carry flammable products, buried as little as three feet underground. some of them aren't buried at all. local emergency agencies are well aware of a possible

danger. >> we worry about everything from you know train derailment along the tracks is something that can happen. we work on multicasualty accidents because we would expect to treat a lot of people. >> private company kinder morgan operates a lot of these fuel pipelines. it issued a statement to ktvu saying it monitors these lines 24/7. the company says safety is always its top concern. now you can check where pipelines are running in your neighborhood. we've posted a link to ash interactive tool. you can find it on the special reports tab at ktvu.com. well, the pursuit of higher education in california may soon cost students even more. also the reason one student involved in a tense standoff at uc berkeley could get some unwanted time off from school. >> reporter: pieces of musical history goes up in flames.

welcome back to the morning news. there it is. the opening bell live in new york this morning. we're looking at the nasdaq. and then over at the new york stock exchange as well. looks like it could be a pretty busy day this morning. some good earnings reports in europe sending stocks up there this morning. decent day overnight in asia. kind of mixed though for some of the bigger markets. but right now it does look like slightly higher opening here. we see some little bit of a drop but we'll keep watching. it does look like a higher opening. gold opening very big. >> really? >> yes. up again. all right.

we'll go ahead and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here on the ktvu morning news tuesday november 9th. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. lot to tell you about this morning. we have breaking news coming in from the peninsula. right now crews are at the scene of this a warehouse fire on quarry road in san carlos. a well-known rock star's possession were inside. ktvu's jade hernandez joining us now with all the details. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. some might call him a music legend. neil young. his storage facility caught fire overnight. his family representatives are already here this morning. they're taking pictures of the memorabilia and they're moving it to a nearby warehouse near where the storage facility is located here along quarry road in san carlos. we've been told young kept guitars, half a dozen vintage cars and racks and racks as high as 12 feet of musical equipment in cases here inside this warehouse which caught fire nearly four hours ago. this fire has been contained at this location along quarry road

in san carlos. this fire broke out around 3:00 this morning. it escalated to a three alarm fire but now under control. it caused extensive damage to this warehouse which is about 10 to 12,000 square feet. the estimated damage at this point is set at about $1 million. for those not as familiar with neil young's music or films, he's co-founded buffalo springfield with steven stills and in 1969 joined crosby, stills and gnash as its fourth member. he's been inducted in the rock and roll hall of fame and recently working on a film about electric car technology. he lives in the bay area and just turned 65 years old this year. his birthday in a few days. joining us this morning belmont fire chief. thank you chief for joining us. talk a little about what your firefighters wanted to way until daylight to get inside that fire house. >> there's a number of

memorabilia. in an effort to salvage as much as we could we want today wait until daylight. number of items have already been removed and on the backside of the building. we're going to go ahead and work with the rest that's in there. >> reporter: where did this fire start? >> it started towards the front. undetermined the exact location. there's several vehicles that were inside there. several cases of memorabilia, paintings. all sorts of items that were there. while the firefighters were working in the front of the structure we sent crews around to the back and they removed a number of vehicles, number of cases, number of different memorabilia items and left it outside for storage. currently all those items are being gone through and moved to another building on this block. >> reporter: pretty amazing for the firefighters to go through some of this stuff. >> especially when some of them don't know who neil young is. >> reporter: thank you so much fire chief. this morning updating us on this fire that broke out around 3:00 this morning. we will have more information

for you during mornings on 2. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. well, this morning oakland police are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting. it happened shortly after 9:30 last night near the intersection of bang covet. kraig debro spoke to witnesses this morning. he joins us with details. >> reporter: good morning, pam. i spoke to two people who said they saw the whole thing. they were virtually about five feet away with another person. and they saw what happened. they saw the officer shoot the man just behind me. if you see the lamp post right there this is where the shooting took place according to their witnesses and when we were here earlier we saw police looking for evidence in that pile of garbage there. the witnesses say that the suspect in this case was shot while sitting on the ground with the officers about five feet away. about six or seven shots were fired from that distance.

and the witnesses were behind the lamp post about five feet away. so they saw the whole thing. they said happened around 9:30 last night. came in as a domestic dispute call at a cleaners, laundry mat around the corner. the police arrived here. it's not clear what contact they have with the suspect at the time but the suspect ended up running away. when he got there he hid behind two cars according to witnesses. the officers walked down the street on either side of the parked cars. they approached the suspect. at one point they grabbed the suspect. he broke free. and then he came over to the other side of the street where he try today climb a fence. he became entangled in some of the shrubbery on that fence and fell back to the ground. that's when he was shot according to our witnesses. the suspect was not armed. >> right now we have not located a weapon. he has not been searched. we're waiting for the alameda county coroner's office to come out to do the search.

everything's still pretty early on in the investigation. >> reporter: that search did take place. but as to whether or not a weapon was found we've just not been told by police i did call the homicide division earlier and a person i spoke with there said we're going to have to contact the official spokesperson with the oakland police department but she added that in this type of investigation they're not going to be releasing much information in addition to the opd homicide division, internal affairs and the district attorney's office is also investigating the two officers involved in this shooting have been put on paid administrative leave. that is standard operating procedure. they said they would not talk to us unless they were paid money and we don't do that. that's why they're not on camera. reporting live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:36. san francisco police out there searching for a driver whose car hit a police officer in the city's mission district. now police respond today a report of someone screaming inside of a car at 22nd and

bart let streets just before 9:00 last night. when the police officer walked towards the car police say the driver sped towards him and hit him. police say officers fired shots at that car but the suspect got away. the officer was treated for minor injuries. he is expected to be okay. a man suspected of firing shots at oakland police officers is in police custody this morning. now no one was hurt in the shooting. it happened about 7:30 last night at the intersection of west and city coo more in west oakland. officers stopped a man and woman who were walking. they say for unknown reasons the man pulled out a gun and started firing. police say officers did not fire back. that gunman was arrested about two hours after the incident. and students at university of california are bracing themselves for another round of tuition hikes. uc president is proposing an 8% tuition increase. that amounts to an extra $822

for undergrads. he's also proposing to raise the retirement age from 60 to 65 for future uc employees. he says the changes are need today close a $1 billion budget shortfall. the board of regents will vote on this plan next week. some students are already organizing a protest to coincide with that vote. and the cal state system is also considering raising tuition. it's trustees will meet this wednesday. they'll vote on two proposed increases. one would boost tuition by $105 for the second half. the other increase tuition by an additional $440 the next school year. if both are approved, tuition for cal state undergrads would be almost $4900 a year starting next fall. a uc berkeley student will learn tonight if she will be suspended from school for taking part in a tense campus standoff. the 21-year-old was among 43

students arrested for occupying wheeler hall last year. students took over the building to protest layoffs and tuition hikes. accused of student misconduct. a panel could decide to suspend her from school for one year. check in with sal now. do you have things under control at the toll plaza? >> we do. as a matter of fact it's getting busier there, dave. you can always send me a tweet if you want to send me some information about any traffic or transportation issue you want. let's go out and take a look at westbound bay bridge backed up for about a ten minute wait. metering lights are on. it's not especially heavy right now. let you get on to the bridge it looks good into san francisco. also this morning remember yesterday 880 was such a mess. today i'm happy to say it's much better driving right through that area. this morning's commute is okay on the peninsula although there's a little bit of slow traffic now on southbound 101 if you're driving down to san mateo. it's not that bad. no major problems this morning if you are driving on 92 or 84. 6:39. let's go to steve.

thank you, sal. good morning to you all. cold out there. now there was a frost advisory for a while but too many clouds are coming in so that got canceled a couple hours ago. and rightfully so because the clouds are racing in. this is a very weak system. we'll start off with sun. cold though. 30s and 40z. clouds coming in late today. the system could make it down to about maybe sfo, oakland, concord by this evening. this is a very weak one. more possibility of rain to the north. not much there. almost every system that comes by seems to have produced rain so far this young season. so even though it looks like not much, i'm going to continue with the clouds and some rain mainly to the north. school forecast if you're in the northed a clouds to the south just decrease these. cold for everyone. 30s and 40s to start off by noon. sun and clouds, cool, 50s, upper 50s and low 60s partly cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. cloudy skies in the north bay. napa yesterday warmed up if you will to 62. went 58 today and cloudy. some rain coming in late.

good morning to you. welcome back. a quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you right now at 6:44. this morning oakland police are investigating a fatal officer- involved shooting. this happened shortly after 9:30 last night near the intersection of ban covet and daughter and sonning. police don't believe e man who was killed had a gun. also right now firefighters in san carlos battling a huge warehouse fire. it was a three alarm fire reported about 3:00 this morning at a building on quarry road. now we're told that rock star neil young kept a lot of his

prized musical possessions inside that warehouse. and president obama is in indonesia today, a country where he lived for four years when he was just a boy. the white house says this trip scheduled for less than 24 hours may have to be shortened even more because of the ash coming from an erupting volcano. "american idol" has come to town as the show's newest judges weigh in on just how much talent there is here in the city by the bay. the contestants here today have already made it through one round. they're hoping of course to keep going. ktvu's claudine wong joins us now from san francisco with the hopefuls. are those the folks right behind you there? >> reporter: they are. i want you to take a very close look at this line of people. these are the contestants and their families. we are in a super kind of secret round of these auditions. these folks have already made it past the producers. i want you to remember back to august 19th. that's when "american idol"

came to at&t park and we had the thousands of people who slept out overnight for a couple of days to try out for the auditions. everyone here today made it past that round. there are 60 to 70 people the next couple of days who will be taking this next step. these are the folk who is will see the judges. remember we have new judges this year. jennifer lopez, steven tyler joining randy jackson on the panel. what's happening now over the next couple days they will go in front of these judges. those are the ones you end up seeing on your television when "american idol" actually goes to air. there are a lot of different rules for this. we can't tell you exactly where we are. the contestants are no longer allowed to just sing on cue because of course they are saving their voices for the judges and for the show. but this is really an important step for them. so what we're going to do is follow their progress this morning. we'll continue to keep you updated of course on mornings on 2. live here in san

[ indiscernible ] >> congregations from five asere inchris chance churches in the south bay came together showing their support for fellow christians in iraq. >> we would like president obama to intervene and basically stop the massacre of the christians in the middle east. >> now the march was a response to an attack by muslim terrorists on a catholic church in baghdad during a sunday mass just nine days ago. more than 50 people were killed. dozens were hurt as the gunman opened fire with automatic weapons and set off suicide bombs. an al qaeda group in iraq has claimed responsibility for that attack. meantime u.s. secretary of defense robert gates says the united states is open to the

idea of keeping american troops in iraq past a deadline to leave next year if the iraqi government makes that request. gates says the u.s. will standby for such a request once the country ends an eight month political deadlock and forms a new government. california governor is okay with pot. he told jay leno last night that "no one care ifs you smoke a joint." the governor signed a law five weeks ago that made possession of up to an ounce of marijuana the equivalent of a traffic ticket. he also says the failed ballot measure to legalize the recreational use of marijuana went too far. time now 6:49. still focused on traffic. sal is watching our commute. how's it going? >> it's going okay. as a matter of fact i'm just looking here and i don't see a lot going on. as a matter of fact i don't see anything going on when it comes to the south bay commute. let's go there first. and talk about westbound 237. westbound traffic is moving along okay if you are driving

there on westbound 237 the traffic is going to be okay driving across 880. also this morning we're looking at the commute here in san -- at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound. that's about a typical delay. about 15 minutes maybe. nothing major. certainly not like yesterday when people were stuck in 880 and not getting through. and in marin county this morning highway 101 southbound that traffic looks okay heading down to 580. it's getting a bit slower past the civic center. now let's go to steve. thank you, sal. a very good morning to you. it's cold out there. yes. yes. oh, my. some clouds starting to increase. start off with cold conditions. 30s, 40s. then we're waiting for that weak little system to arrive. and it will late in the afternoon for the north bay. there's not much there but there's enough to keep it together i think and give us a little bit of rain mainly north by late this afternoon and into tonight. after that it looks like we're done for a while unless there's a fly in the ointment on our long range models they drive everything into the middle the country and keep us sunny

early wednesday and clearing and cool and everything. so sunshine and warmer weather towards the end of the week. okay. we have a developing new story now. very serious fire on a carnival cruise ship near san diego. carnival cruise says the ship has lost power. tug boats are out there on their way trying to tow this back to port. more than 3,000 passengers were aboard the splendor. about 150 miles south of san diego yesterday when the fire broke out. the coast guard crews in alameda helped coordinate response to the fire. took crews about an hour to put it out. coming up next on mornings on 2, a little bit of rock and roll history up in flames on the peninsula early this morning. we're at the scene with details. also the investigation continues into a fatal officer- involved shooting in oakland. some really critical questions still have to be answered. stay with us.
