guys on this sheet had been arrested. they had been terrorizing the area's residents. freemont police along with state and federal agents announced 16 arrests after several early morning raids today. the target the so called insane via thug gangs. >> we began an investigation into this organization about eight months ago when we learned that they were involved in distribution of mbma which is ecstasy and marijuana. and they are involved in drive by shootings. >> reporter: the gang was mostly made of vietnamese man, led by this man tran also known as piggy. they also found five marijuana grow houses, guns, more drugs, and about $100,000 in cash. witnesses who witnessed the raids told us what they saw. >> all of a sudden my backyard, these bombs started going off.

i jumped up and looked out the window and there were three s.w.a.t. guys in full military gear in the backyard. and bombs kept going off. >> there were a lot of bangs, one after the other. i thought it was coming from the backyard but no it turned out i saw, this whole street was full of s.w.a.t. >> reporter: today at one of the raided homes, the woman that identified herself as the mother of one of the arrests said her son was not the type to get into trouble. well that woman also by the way she didn't speak very good english, but she told us in her broken english that she is worried about her son. all 16 men are being he'll at the santa clara jail. they will be arraigned on friday. sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. an oakland family is demanding answers after police shot and killed a 37-year-old father. officers say they thought the man was reaching for a weapon, but the man was not armed.

ktvu's mike mibach joins us now with the latest on what happened. >> reporter: an unarmed man shot and killed in oakland, the reaction is starting to pour in. many of them have signed this poster up there on the wall, the main message written, stop police killing, murder is murder and today derrek jones sister agrees. >> no one deserves to be murdered. no one. >> reporter: this is a murder for you? >> it's a murder and we're going to prove that. >> reporter: oakland police reported to the scene at 9:30 last night. derrek jones was trying to kill a woman, reportedly. >> this man choked her and struck he repeatedly. >> reporter: jones quickly fled the scene and had a metal object in hand.

a foot chase insued >> he looked down and reached for something in his waistband. officers then believing they were in a life threatening situation, discharged their firearms. >> he wouldn't hurt a fly. >> reporter: derrek jones cousin charles and other family members say the shooting was unjustified and unbelievable considering it happened on the heels of the mehserle sentencing. >> never in a trillion years would i have imagined that i would be on the other end. i kept saying they need to sue the police for wrongful death. i kept saying wrongful death and here we are. >> we haven't even gotten over oscar grant and here we are. >> reporter: dd as his friends called him did not have a gun, did not have a knife on him. although they did see they found a metal object. they would not elaborate on what that objected was. both officers are on paid

a position. board of supervisors chu devised a process that could take several weeks to pick an interim mayor. >> my number one priority is to ensure an orderly transition of leadership. business interests say the board should choose wisely however and whenever they make their decision. >> the mayor will have to take an active role in aggressively managing the city. i think the interim title may be a one year term but they may not behave like an interim mayor. >> reporter: even if the supervisors adopt avalos motion, they will still have to be ratified by the full board again once newsom leaves officer in january. the wait continues in oakland tonight where election workers are still processing ballots to determine who will

be that city's next mayor. don perrata was in the lead. the registrar voters say provisional and mail in ballots are still being counted. the service employees international union, the seiu agreement calls for no furloughs for one year. the contract also calls for a one year 4.6% pay cut. that is in exchange for 12 personal leave days and a 3% hike in employee pension contributions. the new agreement takes effect immediately and expires july 1st 2013. there is late word tonight that ac transit has reached a tentativcontract agreement with the union representing drivers and mechanics. the new three year contract calls for contributions from employees through their health and benefits plan if their new contract is ratified. ac transit says it will not

have to make third contract. the gathering is part of the ac transit accountability campaign. ac transit has cut service by 16% so far this year to deal with projected budget deficits. the oakland city counsel sill was set to start meeting a few hours ago. the public safety economy is set to present a record recommending procedures for people to apply for a pot growing license. if the plan is accepted, those who are chosen to legally grow marijuana in oakland could be announced in january. and there's another recommendation to raise the number of marijuana dispensaries from four to eight. meanwhile, in the south bay today marijuana advocates rallied outside the san jose city council meeting protesting raids on pot dispensaries there. dispensary owners say despite efforts to run legal businesses they are being

treated like crimins. supporters say in the long run, the raids are ineffective. >> it's not going to go away by doing these raids, it's not going to make us stop using our medication. it's going to make us go to the black market. the city is planning series marijuana in december. san carlos fire investigators tonight are trying to determine the cause of a warehouse fire that almost destroyed music legend neil young's collection of memorabilia. the fire caused a million dollars in damage but firefighters say they were able to save 85% of the contents. today young's representatives removed those items. san francisco firefighters today responded to a fire at a coffee roasting company in the

bank. walker, reggie smith and kevin j era vick boxed food for senior citizens. these boxes help feed some 10,000 seniors in san francisco. the players said the volunteer work is one way to keep the community that offers the team support. >> i'm just here trying to give back to the community, to the people that's left fortunate that don't have the supplies to feed their kids. >> reporter: the food bank says one in five san francisco residents does not have enough to eat. christmas came early at the state capital today. a 55-foot tall white fir was hoisted up in sacramento and is the state's official christmas tree. it'll be decorated with more than two dozen ornaments most made by children and adults with developmental disabilities. american idol hopefuls braved the cold this morning for their first chance to sing for the judges.

the singers lined up in san francisco all hoping to get a golden ticket. family and friends were also there for support. today's contestants were chosen by show producers that auditioned held over the summer. i've been like struggling between two songs, like i've gone back and forth. but i made my decision and i think it's a good one. this season the judges panel is almost entirely new with jennifer lopez and steven tyler joining original judge randy jackson. >> whole new make up. on to our weather, we saw john fowler in san francisco, we were saying that it's just starting to sprinkle there. what are we looking at for tonight? >> more showers in the forecast. moving through san francisco right now and headed to parts of freemont and milpedas. i'll show you the live storm tracker two, you can see the showers, they have moved through san francisco. we still have drizzle in the

north ridge. let's track this area as it moves south into the freemont area. let's grab the leading edge, these are real little light showers. nothing to get alarmed about but just know that the niles district, 7:08 you will see increased showers. so just a real kind of slow moving light shower event deal. but showers nonetheless and the computer model kind of nailed it. i showed you, this model is showing rain and light and it's moving through the bay area. it's not unusual to be within 30 minutes of those models. we are seeing the shower, they'll be gone in the morning. temperatures on the cool side. no frost advisories tonight. but still cool and you could find frost out toward clayton. there goes the weather system. there's some cool air that will kind of filter in over us tomorrow. so tomorrow's daytime highs upper 50s, low 60s at best. we go to mountain view where tomorrow morning it'll start

out pretty chilly, upper 40s. lunchtime is just 60 degrees. that's a good 20 degrees cooler than it was last week at this time. 20degrees cooler. today we had this weak system go through. warmer weather moves through, when i'm saying warmer i mean six 0s. the showers are done for a while. this system is moving on, moving out and we dry out. we got some good rainfall totals in santa rosa and san rafael. 62degrees for a daytime high, 61 in napa. 62 in vallejo, these forecast highs come under clearing skies tomorrow. slightly breezy conditions and you know what, tomorrow might be a good day for a jacket because i think even heading off to school in the morning for the kids. i think they'll be wearing the hoodies or light jacket all day. 62degrees, 62 in san mateo that's kind of chilly. the showers will end in the next few hours. we'll be tracking some showers
