veteran's day, bart ridership was lighter than normal. but protesters are planning another march, same location tomorrow afternoon which could snarl friday's commute from any more people. reporting live in oakland, debra villalon. according to oakland police there have been four officer involved shooting this year. the department reported six in all of last year. and police say it's an improvement with the number as high as 11 or 12 in previous years. the alameda coroner says the man who fell off his wheelchair and on to the tracks has died. curtis fuller was rushed to the hospital with head injuries. he h had been adjusting his wheelchair when somehow it went off the platform. he fell on to the tracks and was hit by a train. san jose police are asking for help tonight in finding a man who beat up a pair of good samaritans. he beat them so severely that both of the samaritans were

taken to the hospital. the two had come to the aid of a woman on devine avenue in downtown san jose. lloyd lacuesta is there live with a live report. >> reporter: it is here where a passer by found two men lying unconscious on the sidewalk that had been beaten up, they tried to come to the aid of a woman who was beaten up but instead they became victims themselves. >> big blood spot there, big blood spot over here. >> reporter: the men had just left a restaurant, he came outside when he heard police arriving. >> one of the victims was severely facial wounds, they already had him in a neck brace. the other gentleman had a couple of deep cuts right under the bottoms of his eyes. >> they looked at me and said, greg, i can't believe what happened. the guy just started attacking us, beating us pretty bad. the woman he was trying to

who has information or anyone who saw anything happen here. it's hard to believe that california's budget situation could get any worse but it has. now governor arnold schwarzenegger has called a special session to deal with the situation. the governor just signed a new budget last month but now the analysts say there's also a $6 billion deficit because of overly optimistic assumptions about revenue and federal funding that likely won't materialize. what's more, the state is a $25 over the next two years. the special legislative session starts december 6th when the newly elected lawmakers are sworn in. state prison officials are moving ahead with plans for a new death row. inspite of a lawsuit to block the new project. the state opened bids for the new death row complex in san

quentin. once completed it would replace the aging death row. they blame governor schwarzenegger for skirting funds to scrap that project. and police are saying that a marital problem shut down the traffic on bay bridge. valentino claimed to be armed with a gun and explosives but that wasn't true. authorities say the gun was fake and there were no explosives. the incident created a night nightmare for commuters. >> it's rather horrifying that one person can bring things to a standstill in that way. >> reporter: valentino's 16-

year-old daughter was in the vehicle with them but he let her go during the stand off. he was taken into custody at about 8:00 this morning and the bridge reopened an hour after that. now tonight family members and neighboring are speaking out about that man in the center of the bay bridge incident. jana katsuyama has that part of our coverage. >> reporter: family members say craig valentino is the father of three kids. his sister told us sacramento police station that during today's incident carlos valentino sent her a text message. >> i saw the vehicle and i thought, that's not him is it. then he got out of the vehicle and i said, that is him. he is not a terrorist by no means whatsoever. >> reporter: his sister says he

was under a lot of stress, working as security at several nightclubs. neighbors say the family moved in about a year ago. >> i say hi to him. i say him to him once in a while but that's about it. >> reporter: one neighbor said she had had trouble with carlos valentino once before. >> when he came to live, i had a big falling out to him. to me he's just rude. i don't feel for him. but the kids are wonderful. >> reporter: today one family member put a sign on the garage saying they didn't want to talk on camera. carlos valentino was taken to a hospital for a psychiatric investigation. a police spokesman said he did apologize for what happened. >> from talking to mr. valentino he was extremely remorseful. he was very apologetic. he feels very bad for what took place this morning. >> reporter: the family of craig carlos valentino says he

has no history mental problems. he is being held tonight. just a few minutes ago, ktvu news obtained a statement from valentino's wife. she calls herself a loyal wife. she says she and her husband have been married for 22 year and she feels extremely bad for what happened today. she says quote craig and i have been having marital status for the last two years. we're in the midst of divorce. he must have had a very hard time with this, and today he reached his boiling point. thug boats and coast guard cutters towed the cruise liner back to san diego this morning.

vice president joe biden presided over the ceremonies at arlington national cemetery. the vice president and army sergeant first class devin mccann laid a wreath at the tomb of the unknowns. later the vice president talked about the sacred obligation that the united states has to the men and women who serve in the military. the first lady surprised soldiers by showing up to serve dinner. she met with troops who were injured in iraq and afghanistan. it wasn't just the first lady serving food to military men and women today. several national restaurant chains including apple bees offers free meals to vets and their families as well as

active duty personnel. we found several vets who took advantage of the offer. this was also the anniversary of the day mr. bellardi enlisted in the air force that was in 1942. in addition to apple bees, crispy creams and tgi fridays offered special meals for vets. the race for the state's 11th congressional district is still too close to call. the most recent tally shows mcnerney with a lead of less than 13,000 votes. 11,000 provisional ballots still need to be counted but mcnerney says he is confident his lead is insurmountable. >> it's a great day, the votes are in, the voters have spoken. election officials don't

one person was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, others were treated at the scene. firefighters say they don't know at this point how it started. tonight the power at tesoro's refinery is back on. but the problem that caused toxic smoke to be emitted could happen again. that's because the plant does not have the capacity to produce power on its own. the refinery is forced to shut down and burn off gases that are caught in the pipes. we checked with other major refineries in the area and they have resources on-site. san francisco is again considering a controversial plan to charge tolls. the idea is to ease congestion but it will cost drivers as much as $1,500 a year. if supervisors approve the

plan, the earliest they could take effect is 2019. it could cost $3 to cost the city line in the morning and afternoon. the dow dropped almost 17 points the third time in the last 17 days that the dow has posted a drop. cisco cut its sales forecast for a second consecutive corridor, a negative sign to investors, that sent the stocks tumbling about $4. cisco's outlook spilled over to other tech stocks as well. analysts consider cisco as a measuring stick of the technology world since it is the world's leading maker of networking equipment. yahoo is denying a report that it's planning to lay off 20% of its work force. the website tech crunch posted the 20% figure this afternoon.

the sunny vale based company responded with a statement saying, it is always evaluating expenses but called the figure quote, misleading and inaccurate end quote. tech crunch is standing by it's report. caldwell bankers has bought cash in realtors. it's not known how much caldwell paid for the firm. cash in will be folded into caldwell's northern california operations. police say if there's a crime, it will not go unnoticed. ktvu investigates how a northern california city slashed crime and it's police force and is now serving as a model for other police departments. well show you how retailers are trying to get you to buy early and spend more.

running over a 3-year-old boy in a park yesterday. 38-year-old eric lamb is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and willful cruelty to a child. lamb was screaming and deliberately swerved to hit the boy. in news of the world tonight, in baghdad the iraqi parliament convened today. shiite leader remained in office, but later sunni leaders walked out. at least 15 people were killed, more than 100 others were injured. a two story building that housed the investigators who track down terrorists was destroyed. coordinated attacks like this one have been relatively rare

in recent years. and in south korea, leaders at the g20 economic summit hope to reach agreement on ways to get the global economy moving better. but disputes over trade barriers are getting in the way. president obama says the united states cannot keep borrowing lavishly and spending it's money over seas. he says other countries need to buy american experts so that americans can buy their exports. some pilot unions are coming out against those new body full scanners. union leaders are urging pilots for american airlines and u.s. airways to ask for a pat down instead of passing through a scanner. they worry about the health effects of going through such scanners multiple times a day. the transportation security administration says the radiation is too low to pose a risk. the demolition didn't go quite as planned. a 275-foot tall smokestack in ohio was supposed to fall in
