more heartbreaking testimony is expected in the richmond gang rape case. and apple is making a big announcement and beatle fans will be especially interested. and good morning to you. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm dave clark. >> i'm tori campbell. it's tuesday, november 16th. oakland police are checking to see if there's a connection between a high-speed chase, a crash, and a series of disturbing street robberies. ktvu's kraig debro joins us live from oakland police headquarters now with some new information. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, tori. typically when there's robbery and there's suspects, they are arrested a little later, perhaps down the line a little bit. in this case, we're talking about armed street robberies in the lake merritt area took

place between 6:00 -- between 6:00 and 7:00. the suspects were arrested in the morning. police believe these same people are responsible also for several terrifying armed street robberies. police cornered two individuals not far from the hospital. police say a white sedan crashed into another car at that intersection and the suspect split on foot. police followed close behind but couldn't find the suspects initially. officers called in at least one k-9 unite and carefully looked between porches and cars. this all happened believing the vehicle may be stolen. >> the driver didn't stop. he took off. he led police on -- he led police on a chase on the

bridge. there could be another reason the driver didn't want to talk to police. police sources tell us, these same three people could be responsible for seven armed street robberies from lake merritt to hyde street that began around 7:00 p.m. last night. they also might be connected to a home invasion robbery last night. a lot to uncover. for instance, we don't know if police uncovered any of the stolen property that was stolen in armed street robberies. >> we don't know if they got any weapons. we are trying to find that out. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. 7:03. well, a family in concord has a lot of questions for police this morning after an officer shot and wounded the family's dog. this happened last night on esperanza drive while police were out there searching for a car thief. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us with more. >> reporter: good morning. the owner of this pit bull told

us that his 2 1/2-year-old, ju ju, will survive. he said the shooting did not have to happen. the situation began last night around 9:00, when concord police chased a car thief a block away from where the family lives here in concord. that's where the thief abandoned the stolen car he was driving and ran off. concord police one of the officers who was with a kay 9 -- with a k-9 officer. the ju ju went straight for the k- 9. the concord police said the pit bull threatened both the officer and the k-9 officer. ju ju said he doesn't believe the officer needed to shoot his dog. he followed the dog and -- the cop's dog, barking my dog and that's it.

they chase each other. that's it. >> the dog was a threat to our officers and the dog and unfortunately our attempts to control the dog resulted us in having to shoot the dog although it does not appear the dog is gonna be more tally injure -- mortally injured. >> reporter: they did capture the car thief suspect last night. officers found the suspect behind the home in a tree in a backyard. he says he still wants to talk to the department, though, about the incident involving his dog. reporting live from concord, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. it is 7:05. more emotional testimony is expected today during day two of the preliminary hearing in the richmond gang rape case. there was extraordinary security in martinez yesterday when sheriff deputies escorted the seven defendants into the croom. they are accused of -- into the

croom -- courtroom. they are accused of raping a 16- year-old girl after a high school dance last year. nearly everyone agrees the tight security is needed in this case. >> obviously there is a lot of tension. there is a lot of individuals who are angry and there is a lot of people who want to see people punished. >> yesterday, a richmond police officer choked up in court as he called one of the worst experiences of his career. officer todd kaiser said he found the 15-year-old victim slung over a bench badderred and beaten when her attackers ran from the scene. more police officers are scheduled to testify today. the growing problem of bullying on school campuses will be be the focus in san jose opportunity. students, parents and leaders will ask for action to be taken

as you head up highway 17, traffic is going to be busy getting up in the valley. as we see through downtown san jose, nothing major. this morning's commute is okay on interstate 880 it is better than it probably will be in a few hours as traffic starts to wind up here. it soundses like there is a new -- sounds like there is a new accident. a couple of lanes blocked. this is san bruno. moving along to the bay bridge toll plaza. the traffic is moving along okay if you are driving out to the -- out to san francisco, you will see the traffic is moving along okay. let's see. let me just see if i can brick it up here. if you can bring up the map, i know this is last minute, i want to show you this right here, this accident -- right here, 28 at -- 280 at 380 there is a crash, watch for slow traffic developing out of daly

city. two lanes are blocked. we'll follow this accident. here's steve. good morning, sal. we have clear skies. sunday, monday we had temperatures 20 degrees above average. it will be nice today. but you may not like me by sunday/monday because highs might be in the upper 40s. no, no. i'm not making that up. we're seeing a huge change and if you are traveling to the pacific northwest, if you are heading up to seattle, they are looking for maybe brutally cold temperatures. first let's take care of yesterday's record highs. kentfield, 84 degrees. most of the records that broke the old mark. 77 back in 1938. santa rosa, 84 was the record. napa's 83 bass a record -- was a record. and mountain view all records for the day. but we can say bye-bye to these 80-degree temperatures because they are going to disappear pretty fast. the first part of a cooling trend is just now coming down into the picture.

macfarland, ktvu channel 2 news. former secretary of state, colin powell says he believes the reason democrats did so poorly in the recent election is that president obama lost focus and should have done more to help the economy. powell's speaking on "larry king live" and commented on the president's remark that he got shellacked in the election. >> he got shellacked. i think it was more than that. i think it was more of a body blow that he has to figure out how to come back from. asked about sarah palin, he called her a fascinating person, a political celebrity and political force. but he says the tea party movement she has embraced has fiscal goals that are not achievable. back from his post-election vacation, governor-elect jerry brown is facing a state budget deficit that's even bigger than projected. brown is meeting privately with advisers on how to come up with ideas on how to tackle the

deficit that's grown from $12 billion to $25 billion. commits say there's nothing easy that's left to cut. >> the cuts have been so severe, so sustained over the last three or four years, and the economy is in such bad shape right now, that many more cut thes and you are talking about -- cuts and you are talking about permanent damage. >> jerry brown has set up an area on his website where anyone can offer suggestions on how to "get california working again." state lawmakers hope to fill some of that deficit by lling off 24 state buildings. they believe they can raise 1.3 billion. but the state treasurer calls it a poor fiscal policy and says it's bad for taxpayers and last year, the legislative office said this would cost the

state $1.4 billion in the next 35 years. that's because the state plans to lease back office space in those very same buildings. just this morning, we found out there is a british royal wedding in the works. the palace announced prince william and his long-time girlfriend, kate middleton, got engaged during a vacation in kenya. they are due to marry next summer. they are both 28 years old and met more than eight years ago while students at the university of say the -- of saint andrews. they are engaged. it should probably be as big of a wedding as when his parents got married. >> are you going? >> i don't think so. "the san jose mercury" reports the mexican-american community services received $500,000 from the city to open a preschool. but it never opened. city officials are debating whether that group should give that money back. the nonprofit is already under a separate investigation for allegedly skimming employee pension funds. in walnut creek city officials could approve a six- month moratorium tonight of new cell phone to youers. residents weighed in on that topic last week. it regulates the height of -- the height of an ten nas. the city council -- antennas. 7:2. we want to check in with sal for an update on that bad accident. southbound 101 on san rafael. it's an injury crash you are

we're following breaking news right now. we have just learned that two people have been shot to death in vacaville. a third person was injured in the gunfire. all of this happened early this morning. investigators telling us the killings may be tied to a man who damaged vacaville police headquarters. we do have a ktvu news crew

heading out there now and we'll have live updates coming up. a san jose mother is expressing outrage this morning. her son was injured during a high school football game. but when an ambulance arrived, it was blocked from driving on the field. pam cook has more. >> well, the 1-year-old boy is a student at delmar high school in san jose. he was hit in the game in the head and suffered a concussion. but the principal of the school reportedly did not's lou the ambulance on the field apparently to protect the field. she said she was just following orders to keep vehicles off. a spokesperson for the school board said he's appalled at the decision and what happened. paramedics were forced to carry the injured player, 75 yards on a gurney. the boy's mother wants the principal disciplined and to take steps so this never

happens again to another student. now, we have a photographer outside her home right now, waiting to get comments about this incident. she said she's -- her son is suffering headaches and they are watching for brain damage. so she says did the time it took the paramedics to get to him, did it affect or could it affect his health? back to you. >> thank you, pam. authoritiesauthorities in san mateo county have arrested two teenagers on suspicion of shooting at two motorcyclists with a pellet gun. the two teens hit them on wood side on saturday. a woman was shot in the hand. another motorcyclist was found in the knee. dupes found the teens not far from -- deputies found the teens not far from the crime and admitted they did it.

johannes mehserle will return to a los angeles courtroom december 3rd. that's when his lawyers will seek his release on bail pending an appeal of his involuntary manslaughter conviction. now, 11 days ago, a judge sentenced johannes mehserle to two years. the judge gave him credit for time already served. that means he could be eligible for release in about seven months. the trial of the two pen charged with killing oakland journalist chauncey bailey is now underway, more than three years after daily's death. former your black muslim members are accused of killing bailey and two other men in 2007. the judge is considering several motions if this case.

jury selection is not expected until january. 7:33. more humane remains have been found in golden gate park by san francisco police. this follows the discovery on sunday of a severed arm near the polo field. investigators asay all of the human remains belong to one person. the medical examiner will determine when the man died and if he died of natural causes. we talked to a man who lives in golden gate park and he says he's not surprised human remains were found. >> i'm aware of what the danger is. it's quite dangerous out ear and several times i've had problems. >> police say at this point, they have no reason to suspect foul play and there's no indication that the park is unsafe. but visitors are urged to be aware of their surroundings. 7:34. calosha, investigating a deadly accident in done cord --

concord. this one involving a wood chipper. police say the victim, 33-year- old antonio. rbarraros was trimming the trees when he got tangled in in the rope. he was thrown and sured a fatal injury but was not pulled into that wood chipper machine. san francisco animal control is asking the public for anyone about information over the killing of a swan. the swan that was killed was called "monday." six months ago, her mother was stolen. this is video of the two swans were i've taken last year. now there's only one swan left. her neck was broken and there were several empty beer bottles nearby. one of the seagulls that's been spotted with part of a beer can around its neck is now

free. workers from the group "build rescue" found the bird at lake merced in san francisco yesterday. they cut off the cans and set the bird free. a number of other birds have been spotted with cans around their necks. let's check in with traffic and sal, things are busily happening out there. they are happening and we're checking on that accident. we told but that last time in san rafael. southbound 101. it looks like they've made some progress on it. still there on the shoulder. but traffic is very slow past the scene. you can just tell people are slowing to take a look at it and then they move on. unfortunately traffic is backed up into up well into novato. 101 is no good. this morning's commute on the peninsula is terrible. southbound 280 at 380 there is an accident driving through daly city and out of san francisco down the peninsula. it's terrible on 280.

i would use 101 instead at this point. let's go back to the maps real quick. i want to show you -- there we go. 880 southbound between hayward and union city, look at all of that slow traffic. when you see red on the map, that's stop and go. now, 280 northbound, that's also very slow. so i would say this is the heart of the commute and so far the busiest day of the week. skies are clear. it's a beautiful day. june, july, august, folks would live in san francisco -- ocean beach, it was cold, soggy. sunday, monday, it was 80 deees. it was 80 from the sunset district, the china basin, embarcadero it didn't matter. but changes are brewing big time as we head toward the weekend. sunny but cooler. it's still a little blustery, windy in the hills.

season is officially underway. tara moriarty has been watching the boats leaving from san francisco. she joins us now and it looks like there is a lot of activity behind you. >> that's right. pier 45 has been busting all monning long. this guy is picking up these pots to load up and put on the boats. one of these boats just pulled in, they will will be putting some traps on as well. if you take a step over here to the side, you can see that there are hundreds and hundreds of traps that line this entire dock and those, of course, the first traps that were set were placed at exactly 6:00 this morning on the ocean floor. now, fishermen have been itching to leave after a one- day delay to the start of the season. crabbers and processors wanted to test and weigh the crustations to make sure they were meaty enough. so after tense moments yesterday, they did determine the tests yielded a good enough results to give a green light

man. >> all right. well, some breaking news in vacaville. we'll continue to follow it. thank you for the update. protest remembers expected to be in san francisco today as uc regents need to discuss rate hikes. yudof has proposed an 8% increase which would raise annual tradition by $822 starting next fall. that's in addition to a 32% increase that just took effect early this year. yudof's proposal also includes raising the retirement age from 60 to 65 for few cure employees. the california supreme court has upheld a state thaw that gives undocumented immigrants as legal state residents. the law says any students, regardless of this immigration state tis, who attends a california high school for at least three years can qualify for instate tuition rates. >> but in the grand scheme of things, we're all students that have been in the system for 12,

13 years here that are no different than any other student. >> instate tuition saves students about $23,000 a year. uc students save about $11,000 a year. jurors in washington, d.c. will hear closing arguments in the chandra leavey murder trial. the defendant is accused of sexually assaulting and killing heavy back in 2001. she was a mode intern who was romantically linked with gary condit. investigators later determined condit had nothing to do with her disappearance or her death. authorities now are seeking murder charges against a woman accused of pushing an elderly woman off a train platform in los angeles. police say the 84-year-old woman was waiting for a train when the suspect came up from behind her and pushed her onto an empty track. the victim was with her sister at the time, who watched in

horror. >> i could hear the crack, yes. so i knew her and she was bleeding. i couldn't think of anything. i just stood there looking down at her. >> the elderly woman suffered head injuries and later dayed in the hospital. the 4-year-old suspect has been arrested. investigators say this attack was completely unprovoked. they are still trying to figure out why she did it. pg&e is working with the city of san francisco on several safety improvement the for its aging -- imprompts for its aging electrical system. a hearing was held yesterday to prevent future underblown explosions. officials are considering replacing all of the older- model transformers and the fitting of 125 manhole covers with a swivel lock cap to keep them from blowing into the air. as we told you yesterday, a lot of shoppers have recently

ditched plastic shopping bags in favor of reusable bags. but those shoppers are hoping to help protect the environment. but there's new evidence about some of the so-called ecobags that they reportedly contained lead and may pose a heck risk. ktvu conducted a led test on a dozen shopping bags from bay area stores. most of the test results were negative. however, one brown and green bag from rite aid raised a red flag. what we're getting is about 600 parts mer million of lead. so that would be around the around twice the amount of lead in children products. >> our testing was conducted after hours so we weren't able to reach height aid to hear their side of the story. a new children tea book written by president obama goes on sale today. the book is called "a letter to

good morning. welcome back to "mornings on 2." i'm tori campbell. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. it's tuesday, november 16th. we are following breaking news out of vacaville this morning, where police say a man shot three people, killing two of them at an apartment complex just before 2:00 this morning. officers say while they were responding to the scene of the shootings, the alleged gunman walked into the vacaville police station acting strangely. they subdued him with a taser. police say at this point they don't know what the motive for the shooting is. officers found two men dead inside an apartment and -- at williams street in vacaville and a woman on the sidewalk outside suffering from a gunshot wound. again, no motive for the it. we have a news crew heading to the scene and will continue to have updates on this story. in oakland, three people are in custody right now after a dramatic overnight high-speed chase and the police are trying to figure out whether there is a possible link to several

recent street robberies. ktvu's kraig debro has been following this all morning and is back with us live about with the details. >> reporter: i did -- live with the details. >> reporter: there are more than five hours between the street robberies and the chase that ended in an oakland neighborhood. earlier this morning, police say they believe the robberies and the chase are connected. now, this is the scene at east 25th street and highland in oakland around 1:30 this morning. that's when the chase ended, around 1:45, police arrested three people. two men and a women were cuffed and put in the back of police cars. k-9 units were called in to sift out the suspects. the car lost control and crashed into a parked car. the suspects fled and are now in custody. the chp got involved in the church because they been chasing the driver of a on the bay bridge. ty were trying to pull over the

wound. the woman was airlifted to uc davis and is expected to survive. we understand the shooting happened before 2:00 this morning in the 500 block of williams street at an apartment complex. that's where we're live this morning. officers found the bodies of two men and a woman outside the building suffering from a gunshot wound. we -- the video you are looking at is a family member hugging outside of that apartment complex. sometime later in a random twist of this story, a man armed with a gun came into the vacaville police department. he was waving his gun, breaking windows, police tried to subdue him and they eventually tased and arrested the man. police believe that that man may be connected to the overnight shooting. police are not releasing the names of the shooting victims or the man arrested at the police department but we have called the lieutenant in charge of this case and we are waiting to hear back from him. as soon as we get more information we'll pass that along to you. reporting live from vacaville,

two men and women are in custody in connection with an overnight high speed chase that reached the bay bridge at one point. police are investigating whether those suspects are also responsible for several recent street robberies and a home invasion robbery. a concord family's pet dog was shot and wounded by police. this happened last night on esperanza drive while police were searching for a car thief. police say the dog, the 2-year- old pit ball charged the after and a police dog. the owner of the dog is disputing that account. it seven defendants are accused of gang-raping a 16- year-old girl outside of the school last year, that hearing is happening now. uc president, mark yudof, has proposed an 8% increase which would raise annual

tuition by $822 starting next fall. that is in addition to a 32% increase that took effect earlier this year. yudof's proposal also includes raising the retirement age from 60 to 65 for future employees. the california supreme court has upheld a state law that gives undocumented immigrants the same tuition benefits as legal state residents. the law says any student regardless of their immigration status who attends a california high school for at least three years can qualify for instate tuition rates. instate tuition saves uc students about $23,000 a year. instate cu students save about $11,000 a year. well, san francisco animal control wants your had this morning about the killing of a swan over the weekend at the palace of the fine arts. now, the swan that was killed was named "monday." six months ago her mother was stolen. you are looking at video of the
