period. police spotted a car wanted in connection with a robbery that had been reported a few minutes earlier. a police spokeswoman said the chase came after a series of robberies in and around the lake shore neighborhood. >> we had eight street robberies in that particular area within a 24 hour period. that will be what the in investigators will look at first. >> the chase took officers across the bay bridge at speeds up to 100-miles-an-hour. and today there is new details in the case of a gang rape of a teenage girl. the mother of elvis torrente the only defendant charged with aiding and abetting and not

rape offered support today for her son. >> we know what kind of person my son is and we trust in god and the courts that he will be cleared of all the charges. >> a crime scene investigator became emotional as she described the photos she took of the victim. no arrests have been made in the killing which is the city's 74th so far this year. church leaders say the killing comes one day before it was to announce a two year, $430,000 grant to try to combat violence and reduce the number of street fatalities in oakland and richmond. they say the money will go toward recruiting and training community leaders. san francisco supervisors are still meeting at this hour to try to decide who will be the city's interim mayor. the court wants to begin the process now because outgoing mayor newsom plans to leave his

postin january to become lieutenant governor. david stevenson joins us now with late details. >> reporter: the city council is meeting tonight. supervisors scuttled a plan over a lack of support from their fellow board members. the last time san francisco supervisors appointed an interim mayor was 1978. >> mayor feinstein was appointed with very little process, a lot of emotion but very little process. >> reporter: now the process has divided the board between progressives who say the search should begin immediately and moderates who say go slow. >> how do you start a process when there's not a vacancy.

jones was down 178 points. the nasdaq dropped almost 44 points. general motors ipo is creating so much buzz the company is now going to offer 113 million additional shares. an unnamed source tells the associated press the move will expands gm's initial public offering on thursday by 31%. the auto maker could raise $50 billion. a mighty fee for a company that was in bankruptcy just 16 months ago. american taxpayers will also get paid because they own 60% of the company as part of the government bail out. health workers rallied in sacramento today calling for better security. the demonstration comes after the death of 54-year-old donna gross. she was found strangled in october. on the grounds of napa state hospital, one worker there said her job is more dangerous than working at pelican bay prison.

>> people from pelican bay and prisons are constantly transferred into our hospital. >> reporter: workers say the danger is increasing because courts are sending more and more criminals for mental health evaluations. pg & e began replacing every manhole cover in stan francisco. the utility company is also changing the way it inspects it's underground system. >> if you can imagine, a woman in 2005 was walking right past this manhole when flames started shooting up out of the ground. it severely burned her, it also caught this building here on fire. and caused huge damage to the electrical grid. now city officials are creating new rules forcing utilities to upgrade underground safety. >> reporter: san francisco city officials have forced pg & e to change it's inspection program after several underground fires have caused dangerous

equipment on the field it's too heavy, it's going to ruin the track. i could not believe what she was saying. >> reporter: the injured athlete's mother says she wants the school to apologize and reprimand that principal. it happened last night in concord , a pit bull ran out of its front door and charged an officer and its police dog. well, we're having a little trouble but essentially what the officer said is that the dog presented a threat and unfortunately the attempts to control the dog resulted in officers having to shoot the dog. the dog was wounded in the shoulder and taken to a vet. officers eventually captured

it's been called a major boost for oakland. a new project to bring an abundance of healthy food to the people of oakland. paul chambers has the details. >> reporter: since 2001, the mission of oak farms's focus has been to bring healthy food to west oakland. >> we got grant money to bring a community garden to east oakland. >> reporter: and it will take every dime. it has been a dumping ground for years. but once city slickers farms

take it over, it'll be transformed to look like one of their own seven community farms. >> we're going to have a dog run and a little playground. >> reporter: the grant comes from proposition 84 which was passed back in 2006. the grant will be used to purchase and build on the land which could mean new jobs for the people of west oakland. >> once we get the funds, we want to be able to employ as many people here in west oakland as part of the process. >> i think it helps beautify everything. to put something else on people's mind for the goodness of the neighborhood. >> reporter: for the first time, city slickers will own the land. their other seven farms are on land that can be taken away from them at a moment's notice. >> we will make sure this land

the city of oakland is moving forward with plans to build a new stadium for the oakland a's despite the team's on plans to try to move to san jose. the oakland planning commission will review a proposal for a 39,000 seat ballpark. it's one of three sites being considered by the city including the team's current home at the coliseum. we should mention again that a's team owner lou wolf has said in the past that oakland just won't do. >> there is a new cy young award winner. >> the reign of tim lincecum is over as the national sy young award winner.

not a surprise. he did have a good season but a very deserving roy halladay is the league's new cy young winner. halladay received all 32 first place votes. great year for him. sizable trade completed today, the atlanta braves acquire dan ugla who had a break out year .287. why would you trade a guy hitting like that? well he had just one year left on his contract then he'll become a free agent in the marlins just couldn't get it together on a contract. the marlins received mike dunn and infante hit .331 at the plate this past season.
