30s. low clouds and fog mean temperatures coming down. it's mid-70s yesterday. santa clara valley, mid-60s today. 50s by the coast. san francisco now 59. and a lot of low clouds and fog with partly sunny skies. here's sal. steve right now traffic on the east shore freeway you can tell it's getting a bit more crowded as you drive out to the macarthur maze although it's not that bad. right now traffic is better than it was yesterday. there's a small delay here right now at the bay bridge toll plaza westbound traffic's been backed up for a few minutes here. 6:01. back to the desk. sal, thank you. the big vote is today. and more protests are planned as uc regents vote on a controversial tuition hike this morning. jade hernandez is live in san francisco with more on how the protesters clashed with police. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we're live at ucsf mission bay where uc regents will reconvene their meeting at 30:00 this morning. they'll vote on a proposed 8% tuition hike for the ten

campuses within the system. uc campus police still have barricades up right now. they are ready for more spontaneous protests today. yesterday uc campus police clashed with about 300 demonstrators here at ucsf mission bay's community center. ktvu watched as three uc officers faced off against a crowd of about four dozen attempting to enter the conference hall threw an adjacent garage. one officer who appears left behind as fellow officers exited the garage through an elevator scuffled with the crowd as he tried to clear it. he then drew his gun on those around him. >> they hit the baton out of his arms. he later picked it up. he was struck in the head with the baton. >> but then the protesters appear to physically push and shove him which is unwise as well as unlawful. >> reporter: at least 15 people were pepper sprayed. police pulled out batons on the protesters who tried charging

officers past barricades where uc regents board members were meeting. 13 people arrested, eleven students and four uc police officers suffered minor injuries. students are yep upset that this hike push to $11,104. about 40 demonstrators held a meeting on the uc berkeley campus last night to discuss demonstrations planned today. the media was not allowed inside. neither were police. the uc regents vote is scheduled for later this morning right here at mission bay. we'll have more on this coming up. reporting live from san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. this morning richmond police are looking for the person who shot and killed a teenager in a busy commercial district. police say the 18-year-old was near south 30th street and cutting boulevard with at least two other people yesterday

morning. the shooter walked up and opened fire on the group. the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene. investigators say the shooter jumped into a dark blue chevy suburban and took off. they say the get away vehicle is about five to ten years old. time now 6:03. new this morning police in emeryville are investigating a shooting. the man flagged down a chp officer near powell street and christy avenue about 9:30 last night telling the officer he'd been shot. an ambulance rushed him to the hospital. so far we have no other details about his injuries. police in santa rosa hope they've put a stop to the recent string of car thefts in the western part of that city. officers arrested two men believed responsible for smashing windows and stealing expensive items from cars, trucks and suvs. investigators say the two men may be connected to as many as 30 recent car thefts. an alert issued for a missing man from the east bay. ktvu just spoke with a co-

worker this morning. tara joins us from pleasant hill with the details. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, pam. bryan's been missing for more than a week and his family says they're getting very anxious now. this is where the 33-year-old works at the texas barbecue. off 680 in pleasant hill. he had just finished his work shift november 11th a tuesday night. now his father says that his son had had an argument with his wife the night before but it would be completely out of character for him to take off so abruptly. he does have two young daughters. concord police say he did go back to his house after work, grab some money, clothes and camping gear. they believe he could be in the big sur area where he sometimes goes camping. we spoke to one of his co- workers this morning who says the mood has been heavy around here. >> we're really sad because he's amazing. he's a really friendly guy. he was always here in the morning and laughing and

really, really sad that he's missing. everybody's devastated. >> reporter: authorities say erb was driving a large dark blue 2002 four door ford pickup truck with california license plate number 7p34909. the truck has a long bed, tinted windows, round aftermarket lights on the front bumper and a fox motorcycle sticker on the back window. ktvu did receive a letter from his dad. it says the family has checked all of the places bryan would frequent and come up empty handed. they are really asking for the public's help. here's a copy of the letter his father sent to the station. it says it's killing us that he may be hurt or we don't even know if he's alive. they say that perhaps a friend thinks they are being helpful by helping him stay hidden from his wife, but they want him to know that this is really hurting the rest of the family. they also say it's so out of character for bryan. he's very outgoing and very social. they are really hoping to get some leads here and are really asking for your help. if you have any information or

seen that pickup truck you are asked to call concord police. live in pleasant hill, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:06. more chilling testimony expected today in the richmond gang rape case. a judge is deciding if there's enough evidence to put the seven defendants on trial for last year's horrifying gang rape of a 16-year-old girl outside of a homecoming dance at richmond high school. now yesterday the testimony of one of the arresting officers stunned the courtroom in martinez. officer gary lewis says one suspect claimed the teenage girl was drunk and had consensual sex with the suspects. however, prosecutors claim they have evidence that the girl was an innocent victim of a savage attack. >> fair to say that critical was putting it minor. she had injuries that were life threatening. and that's going to be introduced through these records. >> now so far only five of the 20 witnesses have testified. a hearing that was expected to

wrap up before thanksgiving may last until christmas. we're also now hearing this morning that the former attorney for bay the 4th is resigning from the practice of law. after being implicated in a plot by bay to kill witnesses in the chauncey bailey murder case. now according to court documents brown smuggled a hit list out of jail back in march that named witnesses that her client wanted to have killed to prevent their testimony in his upcoming trial. now following her implication in that plot, brown resigned as bay's attorney. now sources are telling the chauncey bailey project that brown is planning to give up her law practice. she has not been charged with any crime. san francisco police are investigating the death of a 65- year-old woman after she was hit and killed by a ucsf shuttle bus. it happened at about 12:30 yesterday afternoon on geary street at leaven worth. the victim was in the crosswalk when the passenger van made a

turn and hit her. now a nearby surveillance camera caught at least part of the scene and the impact. at the top of the screen you see the woman crossing geary in the crosswalk. seconds later the ucsf bus takes a turn onto geary and then sud suddenly stopped. >> i heard the impact, people screaming. i immediately grabbed my phone. i didn't even look. >> ucsf says the bus driver involved in the crash was hired three years ago and has a clean driverring record. the driver stayed on the scene and gave a statement to police. officers say they aren't sure if the driver will face any charges. and the victim's name is not being released until family is notied. our time is now 6:09. let's see what's happening on the roads now. sal says the toll plaza is busy. it's getting more crowded for sure. if you are driving toward it you can see that cars especially in the left lanes getting more crowded. this is around the time that they turn the metering lights

on. so pretty soon you're going to see a crowd that extends all the way out to at least the end of that parking lot. and once you're on the bridge it looks okay. this morning's commute is going to be okay if you're in san francisco along northbound 101 it looks good if you're trying to get to the downtown area. 101 or 280 take your pick they're both doing very well. and in san mateo let's say you're going down the peninsula looks good. maps are color coded. when you see green it's mostly all good. yellow means a little slower. not a lot of red on the maps. little red on the south bay here and there as the south bay commute starts waking up. ten after 6:00 now go to steve. thank you. looking at some observations temperatures coming up a little. north bay a lot of 40s. if it wasn't for the clouds temperatures would be really cold. east bay a little colder. a smattering of upper 30s. get to those in a moment. low clouds and fog means a big drop in temps. system hanging up right now along the north coast. it's on its way. we'll see increasing clouds in the north bay.

holding off for rain for right now. temperatures today yesterday i have to admit that 75 in san jose i missed that. i missed it. i didn't think it would be that warm but it was. today 66 degrees. concord and walnut creek from 72 yesterday to 64 today. santa rosa big drop. 73 to 62. 59 in the city. oakland from 68 to 61. so this is all courtesy of the first system coming in but it's really ushering in the low clouds and fog. concord, livermore 39. palo alto was down to 43. then 45. now 48. i saw about ten readings palo alto, men lo park. all around 48, 49, 50. 47 redwood city. everyone's close. oakland berkeley now 50. san jose 47. 45 napa santa rosa if it wasn't for the cloud cover you'd be 35. just take a look sacramento 46. 54 eureka because the cloud cover's in there. but 40s and 50s all the way down to southern california. the first system coming in is

not a big keel deal. that's going to increase clouds and give us rain late friday maybe earlier than that towards the north bay. the key will be this low and cold air coming in. also low latitude moisture starting to get closer into the picture. that could increase rain totals. right now the big story will be the cold as we go into the weekend. stay tuned. we might increase some of these rain projections. fog and cold and then some sun and increasing clouds. it will cloud up north bay. not only low clouds there already but high and mid-level clouds as well. 50s and 60s today. so we've said good-bye to those 70-degree temperatures. then the cold air arrives friday. rain friday night into early saturday. a break during the day saturday and then cold air which is why it's in caps and then rain saturday night into sunday. and a cold showery pattern. that's a 29 on the low monday morning. >> good, grief. 29's cold. thank you, steve. the court battle over same sex marriage heads back to court in a few weeks. the major difference you'll see in these court hearings compared to earlier ones.

more than 600 people will lose their jobs at headquarters in south san francisco. at least 100 others from the vacaville manufacturing facility. but workers say they still don't know who will be let go. >> people kind of are a little bit guarded about it. they you know they're worried about the future. they have no control over kind of what's going on there. >> a spokeswoman says the first round of cuts will come in mid- january. now state farm insurance is also cutting bay area jobs. state farm is closing its regional office and moving that officer to bakersfield. state farm says it will help most of the 450 employees relocate to the new current county offices. nine smaller state farm offices will also close including one in san francisco. the head of general motors ricks opening bell on wall street in just about 15 minutes as the u.s. automaker returns to life as a public company.

our washington d.c. newsroom reporter allison burns takes a look at what it means for taxpayers who bailed out general motors just a year and a half ago. good morning, allison. >> reporter: good morning to you, pam. general motors' return to wall street means that the federal government will no longer be the majority shareholder in the company. i have a statement here from president obama. he says general motors' initial public offering marks a major milestone in the turn around of not just an iconic company but the entire american auto industry. gm's stock offering is potentially worth $23 billion and could be the largest ipo in history. gm set the price of $23 per share. the feds are unloading 400 million shares. get this, taxpayers will still have a one-third stake in the company. and while gm is now turning a profit after making massive cuts, closing plants and selling off several brands, it is still unclear whether it has

solved some of its key financial problems. i'll show you what the company's new ceo is saying about when gm is going to be boosting hiring again. i'll have that for you during my next update in about 45 minutes. for now live in washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:17. the first guantanamo detainee facing trial was acquitted of all but one of the hundreds of charges against him. jurors in new york city convicted the 36-year-old from tanzania of conspiracy to blow up government buildings. the charges stem from his role in the 1998 u.s. embassy bombings in kenya and tanzania that killed 224 people. he's facing a sentence of 20 years to life in prison. the upcoming hearing on california's proposition 8 will be carried on live tv. the court of appeals in san francisco will allow c-span to broadcast the december 6th hearing. a judge overturned prop 8 saying the voter approved ban

on same sex marriage is unconstitutional. now supporters of the ballot measure are appealing that ruling. let's go to sal see what's happening in eastern contra costa county. yeah. we're checking highway 4. there's a little bit of fog moving through which is unusual for we haven't seen it for a while. let's go out there westbound highway 4 traffic is busy here in bay point. also going to be busy in antioch. that's where it really is very busy coming out of brentwood. here slower on the way to concord. also this morning's commute is slow at the toll plaza. they've switched the metering lights on and we're getting quite a delay especially in the left lanes coming into san francisco although it's certainly not as bad as it was yesterday on the east shore and at the bay bridge. it's getting there. this is a look at the south bay. quite a bit of red on our maps already. looks like northbound 101 right at the 680 interchange there's a new accident reported there. sounds like a non-injury crash. nevertheless it may slow you down. traffic is going to be a little bit -- in fact getting more details two vehicles in the center divide three vehicles on

the shoulder. total of five vehicles involved there. chp's on the scene now. 6:19. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. we have a big change in our weather today. low clouds and also fog. and also some rain for those of you watching us up on the north coast. that's the first of what looks to be a huge weather pattern change for us. heard from one of our observers, viewers, in crescent city. he said heavy rain started at 4:30 in the morning. some of that rain green turns to white as the cold air turns to snow. so now this is not going to effect us today but this system will drop south. that will start to impact us more tomorrow. it's kind of just hanging up there the system right now. but the low clouds pushed in in advance of it. fog and sun and clouds cooler today as sal touched on highway 4 that low cloudiness beginning to spread further inland. 50s, 60s and 60s. still 30s. that will probably change when the clouds come in. it feels cold out there.

really cold air for this time of year going to plunge southward over the next few days. fog, low clouds, kind of chilly, cold out there. some sun and clouds higher and mid-level increasing mainly to the north bay. that will inch in later in the day. so 50s and 60s on your temps. cooler in the north and cooler on the coast. not too bad towards the santa clara valley but not as warm as the past few days. clouds on the increase and rain starts friday into saturday morning. cold air saturday late morning early afternoon and windy. and then the next stronger part of the system comes in saturday night and sunday. just kind of cold and showery on monday. pam and dave. all right. thank you, steve. the parent company of sears and k mart reports a third quarter loss of $200 million. most of that is because of weak demand for appliances and clothing at sears. revenues at k mart are down on weaker pharmacy and food sales. the internet game farmville will soon allow players to purchase candy cane seeds to help a hospital under construction in san francisco's mission bay.

controversial tuition hike this morning. ktvu's jade hernandez is in san francisco with more on the protesters and how they have clashed with police. jade. >> reporter: yesterday we knew that protesters were going to be bussed in from various uc schools and knew demonstrators would be outside this ucsf community center because that's where uc regents were holding a meeting to discuss an 8% tuition hike. this morning barricades are out but there's less police presence. and protesters did not want to divulge where they are going to protest today. this is part of the reason why. yesterday police clashed with about 300 demonstrators here at ucsf mission bay center. watched as protesters tried to get into the main building through the garage. a crowd of about four dozen surged pushing and shoving and one officer appears left behind as his fellow officers left through an elevator scuffled through the crowd as he tried to clear and then drew his gun on those around him.

begin in just about two hours. reporting live in san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:32. pittsburgh police say they arrested a wanted antioch man after a wild chase in a stolen suv and three attempted carjackings. police say they first saw 33- year-old lloyd harris in the back of the suv last night. when they tried to pull the vehicle over, they say harris jumped between the two men in the front seats and forced them out. he sped off but crashed into a center divider at california avenue and love ridge road. police say harris then got out of the car and ran onto highway 4. they say he tried to get two different drivers to open their doors but both cars drove off. as harris was trying to pull a woman out of another car, police tackled and arrested him. no one else was hurt. san jose police stress the importance of reporting crimes following a very unusual

kidnapping for ransom case. a local business owner was kidnapped at gunpoint earlier this month but the family didn't contact investigators until the next day. >> in this case there was a delay. rather than criticize our victims in this case we want to encourage others if something similar to this occurs or any crime occurs please notify the police department as soon as possible. >> five people have been arrested for the kidnapping. police say the man dressed as police officers and kidnapped the victim at gunpoint back on november 4th. the suspects then reportedly asked the victim's family for $1 million. police eventually rescued that victim. investigators say a fire at a playground at an elementary school in richmond is suspicious. the fire started at about 11:00 tuesday night at valley view elementary school on maywood drive. it destroyed a slide and some other play equipment. the area that burned is now fenced off and classes at the school are continuing as scheduled. let's check the commute. sal is watching the east bay.

how's it looking, sal? right now it's actually getting busy. we are getting to the heart of the commute. and you can see the traffic is going to be busy here on highway 4 westbound. it's busier in antioch as it normally is. but you will see some slow traffic here at willow pass grade bay point between willow pass one and willow pass two three. 680 slow from pleasant hill into walnut creek. move along to the toll plaza. you'll see the traffic is filled in after they turn the metering lights on about 15 or 20 minuting a now. it is backed up for about 12 minute, 10 to 12 minutes here or there if you're at the very end of the line. northbound 101 near story road there's a crash there. five cars on the shoulder. traffic is actually they just cleared it so i just refreshed my maps and things are doing well on 101. noninjury accident. it's gone. and if you're driving on the peninsula, not a lot of slow traffic. a little bit on highway 92 east -- i'm sorry west of 280. that's about all. 6:35. let's go to steve.

sal, thank you. very good morning. we haven't had rain for a while here. very windy and warm conditions. lots of sunshine. that's all about to change. it already has up on the north coast. crescent city to eureka. this system is really moving very slow. but over time next 24 hours it's going to inch southward and that's going to give us some rain on friday. today though it's mainly just low clouds and fog and a lot of that's been ramped up because of that system coming in. the colder air still to the north but it's on its way. get a good look at it coming in right there. the system not moving south yet. we will start to see not only lower clouds but high and mid- level clouds more to the north and south. by tomorrow at this time we may be looking at rain. today it's a cooler pattern. not colder yet but cooler. fog and then sun. clouds and then some ound. 50s and 60s now. some of these low clouds are rather thick right now from santa rosa to the east bay and to the south bay. berkeley our target forecast starting at 50. overcast go 56 at noon and only 59 for a high. cooler not only 59 there but

san francisco as well. 59 high. low clouds, fog and cooler conditions under mostly cloudy skies. concord, livermore 39. that's probably going to go up as some of the low cloudiness makes it in. but 40s everywhere else or 50 for oakland and berkeley. i said 48 it's now 49. 48 in tahoe. sacramento up to 40. same for fresno, bakersfield, monterey. ly to mid-50s in southern california. the rain to the north. key the low and speckled cloudiness the low is moving south. it's doing to take a while before it really starts to dive south. that will be on saturday. the coldest air begins to move in saturday into sunday and then sunday night and monday looks really cold. fog and cold for some. and then some sun today. clouds, low clouds, higher clouds beginning just kind of work their way in here under partly sunny to partly cloudy skies. 50s and 60s though. few mid to upper 60s towards the south. but temperatures dropping off about ten degrees from yesterday. clouds roll in with the rain on friday night into saturday

ucsf shuttle bus as she crossed the street in san francisco yesterday. the shuttle bus driver is cooperating with investigators. police say they're not sure yet if the driver will face any charges. san francisco police are looking for suspects after a stabbing in golden gate park. it's the latest in a string of violent incidents in the park. ktvu's kraig debro just spoke with a man who has firsthand knowledge of this violence. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. firsthand painful knowledge of that type of violence. you mentioned the 19-year-old man stabbed, that happened on tuesday night. police say the man was stabbed twice in the back and the suspect an older man both people however this incident can't be found right now. that's what some people we talk today hanging out at the park say. they say some people hanging out at the park are often the victims and suspects in these types of crimes because they are participating in illegal activity. the guy we talked to he said he

too was stabbed -- [ audio problems ] >> right here and right here is an altercation. i was yelling at my girlfriend and another guy came walking that way. i went to push him out of the way and boom grabbed me. i started punching him and the blood's flying. i'm getting sliced by the other guy with a razor blade and the other guy stabbed me twice. that was it. >> reporter: last year's incident was unfortunate but it hasn't stopped him from seeing his friends. another incident was frightening last sunday a man walking his dog found a dead body and a severed arm. the area's known to have homeless encampments but no evidence there's any connection with anybody who is part of the encampments. another person we talked to said the violence is often the results of disputes that fuel the park's underground economy, drugs and other illegal activities. he also says that because the

park is so conveniently located next to this street he believes many people come here not only from san francisco but other parts of the country to hang out in the park. >> san francisco's a run away state. the kids run away from home, they sleep in this park or they sleep in dealreadiest park. they sleep in the park. >> reporter: tuesday evening another incident happened here. 6:15 police say a 19-year-old stabbed in the back twice. mentioned that here. but there was also another attack. a 19-year-old man stabbed a 65 -- rather 65-year-old man stabbed a 19-year-old man. that person died. the 65-year-old man is now facing murder charges. and finally two unleashed dogs attacked -- owned by transients attacked three people in the park sending them to the hospital. san francisco police officers had to shoot the dog. they wounded him in that incident. they had to shoot the dog to subdue him. take a look around the park this morning it's really early out here.

the only people we see here are the people who actually live or sleep in the park frequently. but i'm going to be talking to some people who like that gentleman just passed me running in the park now ride their bikes around here every day. live in san francisco, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. in his final state of the city address, oakland mayor said oakland is safer and more financially stable than when he first took office. the mayor issued his address not in person but online. and in his 68 page farewell, the mayor says oakland is safer for all of its residents. in the last year homicides are down 28% and violent crime is down 14%. long time new york congressman scheduled to make a last minute plea today before a house ethics committee. he stunned view e by walking out of the hearing on ethics violations on tuesday and was convicted on eleven counts. today he will have a chance to make his case for a light punishment. time now 6:45. tonight the school board will talk about results of a student

survey that reveals some students are high on campus. about 24% of the eleventh grade students say they've been drunk or high on drugs while on campus. that's actually down from 28% two years ago. the report also found that students are more likely to approve of marijuana than alcohol and cigarettes. in palo alto there are plans for the libraries upsetting many people under the new plans the book collections at the libraries would remain the same or possibly even be reduced. that's because library officials are counting on electronic books becoming more popular in coming years. but groups are against the plan saying voters approved a bond measure to maintain or increase the number of traditional books in the library. it's 6:46 now. sal, what's happening in marin county? we're getting slow traffic already on southbound 101 coming down to central san

raphael near the civic center. it's moving and getting more crowded from novato near highway 37. central looks okay. move along and take a look at the bay bridge. that's about a 15 minute delay now. you can see even the traffic coming in from the 880 ramp it's going to be slow. and this morning if you're driving in livermore you can see traffic is busy. it's down to about 22 miles an hour on first street. now, remember, when you see the red on the map, that means traffic is about 15 miles an hour or less. which is rather unfortunate for you i guess. hayward, union city fremont that traffic is moving along pretty well. 6:47. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. cooler weather today. start of the cooling trend up on the north coast. for us it's the fog and low clouds. but the rain has moved in. crescent city, eureka, northwest california. this system will be really slow moving and won't impact us probably until tomorrow. but possibility by late this afternoon and this evening towards lake county. tomorrow though we'll all be in line for very light rain. this is not really the bigger

story. it's the cold air which will arrive by the weekend. there's our system. it's still pretty far to the north. but already some low clouds in advance of that and some higher clouds beginning to move up as well. some from the southwest which bears watching as we head into tomorrow. today temperatures are heading down. already from low clouds being reported from santa rosa to the east bay and even san jose. so everyone's in line for a cooling trend today. 75 san jose yesterday. 66 today. 61 oakland. walnut creek down from 72 to 64. san francisco from 68 to 59. and santa rosa big drop 73 yesterday go 62 today under mostly cloudy skies. 39 concord, livermore 40s to near 50 everywhere else. if it wasn't for the cloud cover we'd be significantly cooler. we'll get that early next week. 40s in the mountains, 30s and 40s to 50s from northern california to central and southern. key though is going to be the low that digs down off the oregon coast by saturday afternoon into saturday night. and that will start to funnel in a lot of that cold air. again, cold air doesn't hold as much moisture but i think

about 6.25%. it's been up as much as 8%. about $35 or $36 a share. priced last night at $33 a share. live look at the big board definitely getting help from that. general motors going public again dow jones up about 140 points. district attorneys from seven northern california counties are suing online retailer overstock.com. they say the company misleads customers about how much money they save by shopping on the site. one example a patio set apparently advertised for $449 overstock said it sold for $1,000 elsewhere. but when the outdoor furniture was delivered it had a $249 wal- mart price tag. overstock says it occasionally makes mistakes. well, millions of people have already seen the first half hour of that new harry potter movie that premiers tomorrow. >> the stronger he gets.
