san joaquin county tonight with more of what's going on. >> reporter: we are standing right outside bethany school which right now is a campus in mourning. students and staff are dealing with the death of a young friend. as class ended here tonight, parents and students left the bethany campus in a somber mood. most had already received the bad news. >> saddened, i'm sorry so hear that and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family. >> reporter: colia smith, the eighth grader died in her home. a sheriff's department spokesperson told me, the girl committed suicide. >> she was due to receive an award yesterday. >> reporter: karen buckley added that colia was also on the basketball team. >> she was well liked and will be missed. >> reporter: colia adds to the

eight suicides and another five attempted suicide. family therapists say when the economy goes down, suicide in teenagers thrive. >> they are very clearly often the mirror of what's happening with their whole family. >> one parent told me all children should feel able to talk to their parents about anything at any time. >> just to be up front, open and honest, have good communication with your kids. >> reporter: counselors will return tomorrow and next week even with school closed, we'll be holding counseling sessions with some students in need. a transient has been arrested and accused of injurying a man in a stabbing tuesday night in golden state park. crime is increasing in a group of people who live in the park and sell illegal items there.

usually the victims are transients. a nurse who treated the 16- year-old allege rape victim said she could partially open her mouth because of pain and swelling. one of the defendants called the girl over to a picnic table and gave her brandy. the girl says the girl didn't remember anything else until -- the nurse says the girl didn't remember anything else until she woke up in the doctor. >> i think you will hear that we would not charge this if it was consensual sex. and the evidence makes it clear that it's not. >> reporter: the hearing is taking place at the contra costa county superior court in martinez. a counselor is under arrest

tonight after police found child pornography at his home. thomas perez jewel, the 53-year- old jewel lives alone. officers say they seized several digital storage devices which will be sent to the fbi now for analysis. jewel was arrested for possession of child pornography. the uc board of regents has approved a tuition hike. and as you can see, that decision is not going well with students. >> reporter: the regents raised the cost of going to uc schools. uc regents approved a fee hike that will add $122 to the cost of a public school education

beginning next fall. middle income students will likely be hit hardest. >> 55% of the student body because they are eligible for public assistance in education will not be paying the increase. so that's a great thing. >> the majority of us middle income students are very, very pressed from all sides. many of us who have come out of school in debt cycles before we can everyone drink. >> reporter: the hike will raise $150 million toward a budget shortfall. one uc merced student remains in custody for allegedly

attacking an officer with his own baton just . >> people looked at it, people slowed the tape down, they heard what was said and so she's pretty confident that he's okay on that. >> reporter: now the san francisco district attorney's office tonight tells me they have not gotten that alleged assault case from the uc police so it's unclear whether that student will be charged. in the meantime, next month regents will vote on cuts billion -rs s of dollars from uc berkeley retired staff. again the vote today approved an 8% raise in tuition costs for the university of california campuses. that amounts to an additional $822. bringing the total tuition a

year to $11,124 figure. that does not include campus fees or room and board. record low interest rates are not doing enough to lift the bay area housing market. research firm mda data quick says sales dropped almost 23% in october to their second lowest level in two decades. 6,100 homes were sold last month. prices are down by 1.8%. nasa and contra costa county saw the biggest decline. their prices were actually up in solano and santa clara county. as the bay area now braces for cold and wet weather. local agencies are scrambling to get prepared. some say they want to be ready to open their doors early for those in need. ktvu's robert handa joins us now. he's live in san jose with this report. >> reporter: we're here along the guadalupe river in san jose where there are usually a number of homeless camps. many homeless have left looking

for better protection from the cold. it probably shouldn't surprise us when the weather gets chilly in november. >> it's hot weather and now it's changing to cold. so it kind of makes you wonder. okay what kind of weather are we going to have. you can't prepare for it. >> reporter: some can prepare some can't. or at least not as well. the south bay's largest homeless agency will open or expands three new shelters next week for the winter but went into emergency mode today because of this cold snap. >> it's really cold. if you don't have a shelter some where with a roof over your head to the point where your bones ache when you get up in the morning if you're next to the tracks or under a bush or everyone if you're trying to sleep in your vehicle. >> how big will the demand be do you think? >> i think it's going to be high because it's going to be quite cold. >> reporter: the agency will

add another name to it's roll call of people who have died. francis vallejos has been identified. >> it takes it's toll on you pretty quick. >> reporter: officials say the homeless are well aware it gets cold in november, the question is can they get away from it? live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu 2 news. postal workers picketed in san francisco to protest what they say is unfair treatment of employees. clerks say the u.s. postal service is cutting their hours, relocating workers then calling them back and offering just four hours a week to employees who do not agree to move. >> how do these people live? how do they take care of their family, how do they pay their

bills? they can't. >> reporter: usps spokesman gus ruiz says 37 people took an officer to relocate. organizers say hyatt rejected their officer. >> we sent our message to the hyatt and we're hoping the general manager would relate to the headquarters that the community is watching. we want to stop the workplace injuries. >> our phone calls to the hyatt have not yet been returned.

ferry rides may have to pay 10% more beginning january 1st. today a transportation district committee compromised and lowered a proposed hike. officials considered a 32% hike. angry riders asked officials to find another solution. these are just some of the kids, dozens of kids who have the opportunity to play in a national championship game. all they need now is the money to get there. we'll have a live report. and i'm tracking more showers, it's going to be cool showers this bay area weekend. i'll give you the timing.

in the east bay dozens of young football players and cheer leaders are stuck between total elation and total disappointment tonight. they've been invited to play in florida. but to be able to go they have to raise money to go there. >> reporter: without someone raising $50,000 in the next two week, they aren't going any where. they are called the oakland dynamite, the two football teams and cheer leading team won their division. the teams got automatic

invitations to play in a national championship series that starts december 5th near orlando. so far they've raised only $1,000. >> we're reaching out to whoever can help us to get these babies there. >> reporter: the kids range in age from eight to 15. billy waters says the program has succeeded in diverting a lot of kids from worlds of trouble. >> some of these kids will never leave the state of california, unless we go to florida and get this done. >> reporter: the kids got close to making the championship last year. >> last year we lost, and this year we won. >> i felt very good because we're supporting our oakland dynamite and we're supporting oakland. >> reporter: for information on how you can help these kids get to florida, you can go to kt v

u.com and click on web links. on wall street, stocks soared today for several reasons. the nasdaq was up 38, the dow was up 54. the biggest driver of all, general motors the reborn company had the largest initial public stock offering in u.s. history. people with chronic illnesses say the economic downturn is making it tougher to manage their physical health. more than 1/3 of people with heart disease or diabetes say the economic downturn has had a negative impact on their health. more than 1/5 of cancer patients said the same thing. many people said they have a hard time paying for expensive medicines and health care. organizers say 68% of low wage workers in america face

some kind of wage theft such as unpaid wages, minimum wage violations and illegal deductions. >> we can ask why i have lower pay, or why i have never received a break. after eight years of sitting empty, there are finally tenants tonight for san jose's sobrado building. it's the first company to move in since the complex was constructed. chuck reed says the building was once the symbol of the dot.com bust but is now a sign of economic reemergence.

a winter storm warning has been issued and several feet of snow are expected. that means great conditions for skiing just in time for the thanksgiving weekend. >> from snow in the mountains to rain in the area. let's check in now with chief meteorologist bill martin. >> we've had colder days and colder nights. temperatures in the low 50s. some snow, dustings on bay area peaks. right now outside it's in the 50s. upper 30s, low 40s tonight. here's how it breaks down. big change. i think the real headline here a cool storm on the weekend, that's a drag. it has been very, very warm. this weekend will be a 180 from last weekend. this weekend will be winter

telling the enmy where troops are located. there is concern careless use could lead to trouble. in the south bay military veterans looking for new opportunities got a helping hasn't today at a free job fair. the recruit military opportunity expo was held at the fourth street summit center in san jose. the more than 300 veterans had a chance to interview and network with a wide range of employers. organizers stage close to 100 similar events every year. >> it givers military veterans a chance to have that dialogue on how they can transition into the corporate market. >> reporter: more than 30 companies participated in today's event. california today lost a new statewide program that will help grocery stores save money and energy. super markets are getting new energy efficient refrigeration systems. the california commission is testing the systems, it's all part of the energy smart jobs

program which aims to make commercial appliances more energy efficient. the initiative is partially funded by stimulus money. the program is expected to save business more than $40 million in energy during the first five years. opera music doesn't usually spark controversy. but tonight it is stirring up one san francisco neighborhood. the reason some people want things to remain quiet.

less than an hour ago, the san francisco planning commission approved a permit that has struck a sour note with some residents. the restaurant received permission to use an amplified system. one of the restaurants waiters sings opera and the plan is for him to serenade customers. the dwellers association turned down the plan. but restaurant owners think

with tampa. yankee pitcher cc sabathia finished 19th. they've only been playing nine years of women's golf but they finished 12th in the state tournament and they have local sensations to talk about. grace has been playing almost every day in alameda since her family moved there 10 years ago. she shot an even par-74. it took a birdie putt in the final hole to pull it off. >> i said, i have nothing to lose. let's just go for it. i knew it was going in as soon as it left my putter. i actually gave the arm fist before it made the hole. it was pretty awesome. >> there's always that little missing part. we didn't win as a team but in school, everyone is congratulating me. i didn't think it was going to
