a cold rain in the bay area and fresh snow in the sierra. we're on storm watch tonight. good evening. >> it's the coldest storm of the season with snow expected on the bay area's highest peaks. before the weekend's over. tonight it has been slow going on the roads. take a look at interstate 80 through emeryville where the rain slowed traffic all night long. we're going to start with the most severe weather. a lot of snow up there on

interstate 80. mike? >> reporter: the snow is falling here at 5000 feet. and yes, it is sticking. i'll tell you what, we were at this exact spot five hours ago and there was no snow on the ground. there was no snow on the tree. but as you can see, it is now a complete winter wonderland. how much snow is falling? we'll take a peek and look. a good 4 inches. i'll go out on a limb and say maybe 5 inches. 5 inches of snow in the last five hours. i'll go out on another limb and tell you that i bet more is on the way. a silent sound of a snowfall in the sierra nevada. there are those who prefer to watch it from home while there are others who rush to embrace it. >> just love the whole concept of winter. you're free out here. it's the best. >> i love the limited traffic on highway 80. that's what i like.

>> reporter: whiteout conditions slowed folks driving along interstate 80 where chains are still required. this is day one. the winter storm is expected to stick around through the entire weekend. >> it's about time. i was surfing yesterday. pretty nice to be up here when it's snowing. >> reporter: tonight the ski row resort's lights were on. >> it's about the snow, the attitude. >> the men come out and leave the boys at home. >> reporter: the message was clear. the more snow, the more smiles there will be all winter long. >> i love it. you can't ask for anything more. >> reporter: and if you decide to drive up overnight or first thing in the morning or even tomorrow afternoon, do not forget those chains. we've seen a few spinouts right here on interstate 80. do not forget those snow boards and skis. i guarantee you'll want to use

them. ktvu channel 2 news. >> this is a view from the cal trans camera. we've been watching the snow fall there for the past two hours. snow skiers will be able to take advantage of that snow. north star, heavenly, and boyle are all open. squaw valley plans to open tomorrow. and alpine meadows opens on december 10. what a difference a couple of days make. earlier this week, bay area temperatures were in the 80s and people were wearing shorts. now we have cold weather better suited to sweaters and mittens. we have more of our storm watch coverage with floyd. >> like most of the bay area, it is experiencing a light but steady cold rain tonight. it's the beginning of what's expected to be a wet weekend. >> it's excited. >> why is that? >> i don't know.

because i think we didn't have that much rain this summer. and i think it's good for us. >> people scurried around in rain jackets tonight. just a few days ago, it was warm and dry. >> i was going to oakland. every morning i was coming down it was like 70 degrees. now it's raining. weird. >> reporter: the roads were wit and sling for the evening commute. the san jose office of the highway patrol says by 7:00 there were nearly 2000 calls for assistance. >> the number one factor for people crashing is speed and not paying attention to changing traffic conditions. during the wet weather, we advise that you slow down. >> reporter: tonight in san jose was the opening of a 15 year tradition. downtown ice, an outdoor skating rink. a lot of water falls from the skies is not a good mix here.

oakland police are investigating another homicide tonight. it happened a few minutes after 7:00. police responded to reports of shots fired in the 8700 block of mcarthur boulevard. they found a young man dead in the gutter from a gun shot wound. officers describe the victim as a young black man possibly in his 20s. several bullet casings were found. they are in the very early stages of this investigation and are still going over the crime scene. an alameda county judge day ordered andrew barrientos with the murder. he fled the area and was captured in the border. to proceed with a trial next year. barrientos faces life in prison. as for officer young, he suffered some very serious injuries but was released from the hospital last month.

a statewide sweep of paroled sex offenders concluded today with 579 arrests in all. the operation was designed to bring in parolees who had become fugitives or violated the conditions of their parole. it was called operation safe playgrounds. federal regulators have agreed to let pilots skip the new body scans and pat downs. the tsa said today pilots traveling in uniform and on airline business will be able to pass through security by showing two forms of photo id. pilots have complained about repeated exposure to radiation. they also said pat downs by inspectors are demeaning. barbara boxer applauded that decision today and is asking similar things for frequent fliers i ask you

develop a trusted traveler program for law-abiding u.s. airline passengers. a new labor report shows no change in california's unemployment rate. for october it came in at 12.4%, the same as september. california's jobless rate has been at or above 12% for 15 consecutive months. california also remains well above the national jobless rate which was 9.6% for october. in washington, d.c., congress is debating whether to extend unemployment benefit. the deadline is december 1. as randy shanaville, they have extended four times. and it changes the tone of the debate. >> he gets occasional gigs as a roofer. most days his tools sit unused. today like he does most every day, sergio hit the road looking for work. it's been this way for almost two years. and his unemployment benefits are about to run out.

>> this is it. if i don't get nothing real to put it on. and i'm going to get benefits anymore. >> reporter: because the economy has been so sour for so long, congress has approved a series of extensions up from the original 26 weeks of benefits to 99 weeks. but for sergio and up to 400,000 other californians, the 99 weeks are almost up. >> i'm pretty close to lose my house. >> you're about to lose your house? >> yeah. >> reporter: democrats tried to pass yet another extension to keep unemployment checks flowing through the holidays. but republicans citing cost blocked it. >> this is the holiday season and even in good times the holiday season is very stressful for people. this just adds another level to that stress. >> some would say imagewise, there's a problem for

back to the bay area after being held by authorities in arizona since last september. lee's attorney told us she expected her client to be back tomorrow afternoon. lee was born in peru but has been living in the united states without authorization since 2002. senator diane feinstein was able to get him released after introducing a private bill to block his deportation. private bills are often used as a last resort of deportation case. there's no guarantee that bill will make it through congress. an iranian official had words today about the two american detainees. a close advisor to the supreme leader told nbc news he hopes the case could be resolved before their trial on spying charges. mohammed jarvari says she was not a spy. that's why she was released. he says they hope they all crossed the border on accident

as they claimed. after the sentencing of former bart police officer johanns mehserle. speaker after speaker talked about what they see as the injustice of the arrest. after mehserle received a two year sentence for killing oscar grant on new year's day 2009. a 14-year-old boy is in custody tonight facing charges of vehicular manslaughter following a deadly crash this morning. the boy was driving a car carrying four other teens when he lost control and slammed into a utility pole. an 18-year-old passenger died at the scene and another 18- year-old passenger died at the hospital. the victims have been identified as benjamin powell and jonathan johnson. a 16-year-old boy is hospitalized tonight with life- threatening injuries.

it was 22 years ago today that michaela garrett was kidnapped. she would be 31 today. and her family is still holding out for a miracle. reports on the remembrance today at the exact spot where she was last seen. >> reporter: about 30 people including hayward police who have worked the case gathered in the supermarket parking lot where michaela garrett was kidnapped 22 years ago today. the tied ribbons to a tree and talked and cried. >> every year november gets closer. and every year it gets colder. >> trying to sit through -- sift through the people to see who took michaela is like trying to sip out of a fire hose. >> i want heroine we're still looking for her. >> reporter: working with the fbi looking for leads.

it's going to be heaviest in the next couple hours. the heaviest areas are south of san fransisco. south of redwood city as well. in the santa cruz mountains. we're look at tonight' forecast. periods of rain. it'll taper off in the morning hours. the weekend: cold showers through the weekend. here's what's changed a bit. looks as though the hit tomorrow between 4:00 and 10:00 p.m. if you're going the big game and you've got outdoor activities. you may get away with it. there may be light showers at best the first part of saturday. the rain comes back. of course the mountains it keeps snowing. the winter storm warning stays in effect there. this low pressure center is going to be slow to move out. it's cold out right now. when i come back i'll show you the computer model and the gaps. there will be holes where you may be able to do things saturday and sunday. see you back here in a minute.

a concord man reported missing last week was found dead this afternoon at a lodge in northern idaho. ryan herb was reported missing nine days ago. he left with camping gear but did not tell his wife and two young daughters he was leaving. idaho police say they do not suspect foul play. green technology joins the auto show this year. we'll show you some of the hottest cars on the floor. the weather outside is frightful. but not enough to douse a popular holiday tradition. we'll show you how the switch was thrown on the san fransisco water front.

dangerous nozzles. the ocean avenue service station was delivered a letter saying it has four days to comply with an order to upgrade vst brand nozzles that can sometimes spray gas before they're inserted into gas tanks. the station's owner says she wans a recall issued or vst to pay for it. >> i believe everybody should stand up and take a stand to this. this is unfair to us. >> her station was one of 13 in california that reported an incident of gas being sprayed. you can see here it causes a woman to run away before the nozzle is inserted into the tank. a vip party took place ahead of tomorrow's opening of the international auto show. the tens of thousands of people who expected to check out the event will find everything from a dream ride to the latest and greatest in clean energy. we have a preview. >> reporter: the lights are going up, the cars are rolling

talks are said to be at the late stage for the sell of del monte foods. no price has been mentioned. the shares up 12% today. del monte's roots go back to the late 1800s in the bay area. stocks ended up today. the dow gained 22 points. the nasdaq posted a small gain up almost 4 points. an overwhelming majority of 9/11 first responders have agreed to settle a lawsuit with new york city. some 95% of the 10,000 workers who spent months clearing the rubble of the world trade centers have settled. they claim the equipment exposed them to toxic dust. a gay rights fighting the

military's don't ask, don't tell policy is asking the court to hear the case as soon as possible. today the group asked the 9th circuit court of appeals for an expedited schedule. the obama administration is also pushing the senate to repeal don't ask, don't tell on its own next month. it was graduation day for some 5th graders in the east bay. what they're learning is something most of us will never have to deal with. how to resist the temptation to join a gang. >>[ kids yelling ] >> 100 fifth graders graduated from the training program today. it's designed to give kids the tools to succeed in a difficult environment. >> i learn to resist gangs no matter what they say.

proud of their students. ktvu channel 2 news. hundreds of people gathered in san fransisco today for a memorial service honoring former police chief fagan. they were joined by hundreds of police officers at the service. fagan died last week of an apparent heart attack. he was 60 years old. he had a distinguished career, but it was tainted by a street fight involving his son who was one of three offduty officers in what became known as the fajita gate scandal. they say they're concerned. why students and parents marched to an east bay wireless store today. and it's raining out there right now. you can see from storm tracker 2, i'll show you the latest computer model. there might be dry spots in your weekend. and an update from the sierra how the fresh snowfall is effecting travels. coming up.

struck the man. the driver took off before officers arrived. anyone with information is asked to call police. an alameda man was sentenced to 11 years in prison for running over and killing a 78-year-old man while drunk. 38-year-old melina pleaded no contest to a vehicular manslaughter charge to avoid a second degree murder charge. in september a jury deadlocked during the murder trial. prosecutors say he was also on painkillers when he ran over the victim in 2008. a controversy over the location of new cell phone towers triggered a demonstration by concerned parents and students. they marched outside of a verizon store? emeryville. they want to place new towers near the charter school and yates elementary school near oakland and emeryville. they worry about radiation from those towers and noted a i did

for nato. and in the southeast asian nation of myanmar, a group said it's made progress at stopping the poaching of tigers. a minority group has agreed to close the markets where tiger parts are sold openly for medicines and aphrodisiacs. there may be as few as 3200 tigers left in the wild. a decline of 97% over the last 100 years. a pleasantton family is thankful its missing puppy is back home. the six-month-old vanished from a veterinary hospital in dublin this week. it turned out today in danville. it appears it's well cared for and was found with a nice carrier and new cool -- collar. at first it was a light snow, now the heavy stuff is starting to fall.

falling for the last five to six hours. i was saying earlier probably 5 inches of snow. as you can see, i want to show you our side mirror here. we parked here about three and a half hours ago. that's a good four or five inches right there. this is good for the ski resorts itself. we were up there earlier tonight where some snow borders and skiers were enjoying some night skiing. don't forget that thanksgiving holiday is next week. many people were thinking we'll take wednesday off and come up here. they may not be taking the entire weekend off. squaw is expected to open early tomorrow. and heavenly of course. all those guys looking to cash in financially with this storm. if you are coming up, don't forget about bringing chains. chains are required for interstate 80 tonight. they're probably going to be required early in the morning. i don't know about later in the afternoon. we've seen a lot of spinouts here all along interstate 80 all night long.

lets peek at what we're talking about. 40s throughout the evening. cold showers this weekend into sunday. but there are some breaks. there's also a chance for some thundershowers. as this cold air settles in over us which is happening right now, the heaviest rain is occurring at this hour for tonight. then we get a break tomorrow. tomorrow cooling tonights. but during the day we'll see breaks until about 4:00. heavy rain again. kind of like what we're seeing in the south bay saturday evening. what's it mean? it means you might see some sunshine tomorrow. you might see a thundershower. you won't see a lot of rain early in the day. it's coming the second half o the day. you may get activities in between 9-3:00. it's going to be drizzly and cool. sunday unsettled weather. sun might come out. good thing for a thundershower as well. this old air settling in over us will be productive for that.

a little rain didn't dampen the greek theater tonight. the bonfire rally is held the night before the annual big game between cal and stanford. >> there's no stopping that rally. it was east coast versus west coast tonight in the nba. >> the warriors trying to go 6- 0 for the first time in like 20 years. they put their record on the line against the team they beat ten days ago in new york. the knicks haven't won in oakland since 2001. this is current events. david lee still out with that infected elbow. one of the players they traded to get lee, turiaf gets hit.

watch amar'e stoudemire from the baseline. 26 points, 11 rebounds for him. warriors trail by a dozen after three quarters. then williams, drives guest past. two of his 18. williams cuts the knicks lead to two. but the knicks gallinari hits the three from the corner. warriors lose 125-119. they're 7-5 overall as nay visit the lakers sunday. third ranked stanford women played at utah tonight without injured pac-10 player of the year. but her sister was in. she makes the block then the shot. stanford did shoot well in utah. but poland hits this three pointer. poland leads all scores with 19. carves the win. pittsburgh went to okay beat the steelers. sunday the raider nation looks for a deja vu. gives credit to the raiders offensive line.

there's walker. a cal grad who by the way never beat stanford in four big game appearances. but he allows the team to get per game. winning is good for what ails you. >> it definitely makes your car ride or plane ride home better. makes meetings and you have fun in the locker room. have fun at practice. it's -- when you have success, everybody feels good. >> big game. >> big game. cal hasn't had exactly the best season. but this is the big game. anything can happen. and i think we're at home. so all you cal bear fans, let's come out and support. i'll definitely be watching from pittsburgh. >> it's stanford at cal tomorrow 12:30 p.m.
