. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 news on ktvu, channel 2 news. it may be a once in a lifetime image. twin lightning strikes on two towers of the bay bridge showing the power of tonight's winter-like storm. good evening, i'm ken wayne. >> hello again, everyone, i'm heather holmes. the brunt of this weather system has now passed through the bay area. and when it did, it packed a powerful punch. the first wave of this weekend's storm also hit the sierra. take a look at this. this is what it looked like just a few hours ago in truckie along i-80. by the time this storm passes the sierra will get up to two

feet of snow. a winter storm warning is in place until this time tomorrow night. if you are heading up there, well, chains are required. just before 5:35 one of our cameras in san francisco was rolling as lightning bolts hit two towers of the bay bridge. a bolt also hit a high-rise building in san francisco. we have live team coverage tonight. meteorologist mark tamayo was tracking the storms. we begin with ktvu's deborah villalon live at the headlands. >> reporter: heather, we are at vista point the north end of the golden gate bridge. it is blustery out here. but the visibility is good. make out the towers and the traffic alongside the beautiful san francisco skyline. after this latest bout of weather blew through. the rumble of thunder and a light show in the sky heralded tonight's storm surge. this is the big picture. here is the nitty-gritty. public works crews called in on their days off to clear plugged

storm drains. where rainwater is backing up and flooding the streets. >> all over bay area we have one here. we have two more we have to go to in the hills. clogged up storm drains just so much paper and debris inside of them we have to unplug them. >> reporter: along the boulevard in san francisco backed up flows were strong enough to mush manhole covers off and wash them away. around the east bay the drivers plowed through the street ponds where oversized tires add confidence. high winds and pelting rain kept traffic slow on the bay bridge for sometime tonight. and the lightning strikes kept the drivers alert. we love it. so we are beth from the east coast. it reminds us of east coast thunderstorms. >> reporter: but baby, it's cold outside. keeping baby dry was a challenge. shoppers seemed ready to cut their evening errands short. >> i don't really like it.

i just hope to mainly get out of the rain. go to the movies and see harry potter. >> reporter: it was a good opportunity to share an umbrella and try to put a sunny spin on a soggy night. >> it doesn't happen a lot. you got to enjoy it when it doesn't happen. >> yes, we need the rain. >> we need it, too. >> reporter: another look now at the lightning so fast and furious for a time tonight. now pg&e have been responding to power outages. of the of the marina and cal harbor were out. i just talked to pg&e and say they are there are more than 5,000 scattered outages across the bay area. the vast majority on the peninsula. reporting live in the headlands, deborah villalon, ktvu, channel 2 news. for a look at just where this storm is now and also look at how many lightning strikes we saw let's go to our meteorologist mark tamayo.

>> heather, homes of the cells have moved out of the bay area. the main event happened a few hours ago. the radar from 4-5:00 you can see this evening was 211 cloud to ground lightning strikes. this is the loop just coming out to the main event here right around 5:30, 5:45. the yellows and reds are the thunderstorms. as far as the radar right now, i can show you some of the activity we have. just some light showers moving towards the east bay between oakland right around 8:30. move the maps. most of the coverage from pleasantton to livermore and also approaching brentwood as well. the yellows and reds correspond to some heavier downpours. mountain view some rain and piedmont the darker shades of green do correspond to at least some more moderate cells. for tomorrow we still have the possibility of a few showers. there could be a significant break in the activity. at least for one part of your sunday. more on that coming up in just a few minutes. the wet weather was no surprise.

before the lightning and thunder rolled in, it seemed like a rather tame rain shower. ktvu's tara reports. >> reporter: by 3:00 this afternoon, dark clouds began to roll in over san francisco bay. the wind whipped through the flags along the embarcadero. and within one hour, it was a wet mess on the streets of san raphael. but if you hadn't been paying attention to the forecast, this storm might have caught you off guard. off the docks of san francisco, these fishermen hauled in their catch around 2:00 this afternoon when the sun was still shining. out on the sea, it was a bit different story. >> it's raining out there but it was all right. swells got a little high. >> reporter: captain elliceton didn't let the rain deter his crew from reel not guilty more crab -- reeling in more crab. at that time the storm was still royaling through the by but headed southward. well, we watch the weather pretty closely so if it is

going to be hazardous we don't go. we come back in. >> reporter: in the county sandbags lined the hardware store where flooding causes problems at creeks. >> trying to cover up my trailer with some tarps. >> reporter: rakes, batteries and sandbags were some of the hot ticket items. as a steady stream of folks prepared to hunker down for the start of the wet season. people snatched up rain gear and boots. jason jones picked up some tarps. >> really gets wet around here. you have to make sure everything is batoned down because 2-once it turns it turns quick. >> reporter: he comes here to stock up on necessities. >> up on the hill and concerned about slides always looking out for what the neighbor is doing and how the neighbor's land is doing. >> reporter: the national weather service did issue a weather warning for alameda after 5:00 this evening. it was lifted but more rain is

expected overnight. this is ktvu, channel 2 news. now, about those lightning strikes on the bay bridge. here is what it looked like on the bridge at 5:42 this evening as the lightning hit. as we slow down the image you can see two towers were hit simultaneously by bolts of lightning. shot from our roof camera on top of the bank of america building at 555 california street in san francisco. we talked to a cal trans spokesman tonight who said the lightning did not cause any problems on the bay area's busiest bridge. >> those towers are all steel and stand over 500 feet tall. they act like lightning rods. the electricity wants to go to ground so passes straight through the structure and into the ground. the cal trans spokesman says it is not unusual for the bridge continue hit by lightning though he has never seen it hit simultaneously by two bolts. cal trans say the bolts may have caused some blackening at the top of the towers that may have to be painted. the bridge will be inspected for damage after the storm

passes. find live weather updates on our website at ktvu.com. click on the storm tracker ii tab near the top of the page. a bart passenger was hospitalized tonight after getting his leg stuck between a train and the platform. the man was getting off the train at the walnut creek station when he got stuck at 5:30 this evening. a bart spokesman says a bart police officer was nearby and stopped that train from leaving. emergency crews freed the man after about 20 minutes. the extent of his injuries have not yet been released. just a few minutes later there was a second incident. this time another station where a woman got her foot stuck between the train and the platform. she quickly freed herself and was not injured. oakland police tonight are looking for the driver involved in a hit and run crash that killed a 91-year-old man. the alameda county coroner today identified the victim as tre ty. police say he was hit right after 6 a.m. friday at 14th and market streets and died at the scene. they say the driver of a four door sedan that hit it.

y fled before officers arrived. no arrests have been made. anyone with information on this case is asked to call the oakland police. one man was killed and another was wounded when someone shot up their car as they were driving through east oakland today. police say around 12:45 this afternoon the men were driving down 98th avenue near bankcroft when someone began firing at their vehicle. both men were taken to the hospital where one man was pronounced dead. the police have released no suspect information or the name of the man who died. democrat harris continues to hold a slight lead in the race for california's next attorney general. right now harris is 4300 votes ahead of republican steve coolly. still though an estimated 500,000 ballots left to be counted in this still undecided race. political observers from both sides, though, say harris will likely keep the solid lead and ultimately win. election officials have until november 30th to tally the remaining ballots. president obama says he understands why passengers are complaining about those full

body patdowns at the airport. but he defended the security procedures as necessary to guard against hidden explosives. mr. obama acknowledged it's difficult balancing privacy and security issues. but he added that following the attempted jet liner attack by the so-called underwear bomber last christmas, there is a they had foray degrees sieve security measures -- for it aggressive security measures. >> our tsa personnel are properly under enormous pressure to make sure that you don't have somebody slipping on a plane with some sort of explosive device on their persons. >> critics argue the screening procedures are too intrusive and invade your privacy. >> reporter: at the bears wear pub game day excitement could hardly be contained. but for some far less excitement about the renovation of cal memorial stadium that will accept the bears packing next season. >> it's going to hurt. it's going to hurt everybody. not just going to hurt us. but it's going to hurt all of the businesses here in berkeley. >> reporter: these are among the last fans to watch a game at what will soon be the old cal stadium. a $321 million renovation project will begin after the season's end. >> the structure is a little old and tired. but you know a the will of us are tired and old. but that doesn't make any difference. >> reporter: the weathered and cracked outer wall will be re finished and made seismically sound. >> look at it. like my brother said it is like propping up the old man on the couch. they got to do something to this thing but can't tear it down. >> reporter: the iconic outer shell of the stadium will remain. everything inside will be gutted and replaced. >> first the seats and then the restrooms and the whole concession. it's really old. i mean once you are used to the pristine beauty of stanford and

you come here, it's such a letdown really. >> it's worth one year to get the new stadium? >> fortunately it will be at&t park for a little while but then they will bring it back here. >> reporter: the bears will play their home games at the home of the giants, meaning next season up to 70,000 people will not be in berkeley on game day. >> we are trying to come up with ways to make fans stay on the campus, especially for these games that we will be having in san francisco. [ applause ] >> reporter: as businesses hope to soften the blow, cal fans say the temporary move is worth it to have a new home. >> once it is revamped though it will be a phenomenal place. >> reporter: the renovations to the 87--year-old stadium will be paid for by selling seating rights. the university says no public money will be used for the project. the bears have a final regular season home game next saturday. in berkeley this is ktvu, channel 2 news. memorial stadium happens to sit right on top of the hayward fault one more reason it needs

an upgrade. times have certainly changed it. it cost $1.4 to build the staple yum stadium. the initial stadium estimates put the retrofit at $150 to $175 million. now, of course, it's more than $300 million. >> pg&e says it is considering options for customers unwilling to use those controversial smart metres. some consumer advocates are expressing concerns that the wireless devices can cause cancer or other illnesses. pg&e insists the devices are safe but this week the ceo of pg&e says the company is looking for a solution. though he did not elaborate on what that might be. >> pg and he may face up to $16 million in fines in connection with a deadly explosion two years ago near sacramento. the public utilities commission yesterday said it will investigate whether pg&e broke any laws in the rancho cordova blast. the explosion killed a 72-year- old man and injured five

others. federal and state investigations completed earlier this year pound pg&e workers installed the wrong type of pipe in the victim's home in 2006. also determined a goes leak caused that explosion. if the weather gets cold enough, pg&e says it may have to raise the pressure in two natural gas lines in sanbruno. the pipelines run alongside the one that exploded in september killing eight people and destroying 35 homes. the utility lowered the pressure 20 percent after the blast. while no cause has been determined, investigators have found evidence of a pressure surge shortly before the rupture. pg&e is assuring the customers it will increase pressure safely in order to meet this winter's energy demands. >> the california high speed rail authority is postponing the release of the environmental impact report for the peninsula segment of that line. according to the website, palo alto online the head of the peninsula rail program said the report will be delayed because

the agency needs to concentrate on the start of construction in the central valley. the eir as it is called which will detail the design options for the peninsula was set to be released next month. there is no word on a new release date. from high-speed trains to exotic sports cars. some of the us in vehicles to hit the market are on display right now at the san francisco international auto show. the 53rd year for the event taking place. 35 car manufacturers have their 2011 models on display along with plastic cars, hotrods and hybrid vehicles and alternative fuels. the much talked about chevy bolt was on the floor. they were put through their paces. the shown runs through thanksgiving weekend. >> in oakland today more than 800 needy families were given the food for thanksgiving.

they were given a box of groceries for thanksgiving meal and plus every day food and hygiene items. today's event helps some of the community's neediest. >> there are senior citizens that are here. we have people that have over ten children in their family or 8-10 children in their families. we have homeless people. the donations came from various companies, including safeway and local community groups. four american servicemen and women serving overseas are spending thanksgiving far from home can be an emotional experience. but a long serving organization is ready to make sure they get a lift during the holiday season. courtney freel reports. >> reporter: the united service organizations first mission was back in 1941 during world war ii. today the uso hosts up to 85 towers each year, putting on events both overseas and stateside. taking entertainers to afghanistan, japan or germany, wherever our troops go, the uso is there. . san mateo fire inspectors are trying to determine what sparked an early morning fire that displaced 14 people. they arrived at bay shore blood shortly after 3:00 this morning and saw flames on the third floor. three apartments suffered fire damage. another two on the first floor suffered water damage. the red cross is finding housing for those displaced residents. fire officials say the blaze does not appear to be suspicious. in new zealand friends and family of 29 trapped miners say they are angered and frustrated by the delay in rescue operations there. a massive blast ripped through

the mine on south island yesterday. two miners, though, were able to escape with minor injuries. authorities say the poisonous gas levels remain too high to begin rescue efforts. a phone at the bottom of the mine rings but so far no one has answered. right now we are hoping for the best. just want them to report home. >> each miner carried 30 minutes of oxygen, enough to reach oxygen stores in the mine that would allow them to survive for several days. in other news of the world tonight, a top u.s. diplomat is on his way to asia tonight following new reports about north korea's reportedly growing nuclear capabilities. new satellite images show construction is underway at north korea's main atomic complex. stanford professor visited the plant last week and told the new york times he was stunned by the sophistication of the plant. north korea vowed in march to build a light water reactor for civilian energy purposes but there are fears that the plant would give the north a reason

transition will succeed to the afghan authority. >> reporter: but the agreement is at best a goal. privately there is real skepticism that the afghan government will be ready to provide security and services to its people. the new nato agreement bluntly states: >> we must be guided by realities, not schedules. >> reporter: russia's president also suggested afghanistan may not be ready. >> whether it is feasible in the forthcoming future, i don't know. i have some doubts there. >> reporter: president obama himself seemed to leave the door open about whether u.s. troops would still be fighting in afghanistan after 2014. when asked if he would keep u.s. combat troops there after the proposed deadline, he said: >> we will always do what's necessary to keep the american people safe. and maybe that will be the case

in 2014. >> reporter: but president obama is eager to get the u.s. forces out of this unpopular war. nato allies are even less patient. several countries have already said their troops will not remain in combat indefinitely. a senior british official said british prime minister david cameron repeated here that no matter how violent afghanistan is at the end of 2014, the british will end combat operations by the next year. those chilean miner who is spent 69 days trapped underground are now the toast of the town in la. . >> lanes are still closed at this hour on eastbound 227 after a tractor trailer toppled over. it crashed just after 7:15 west of san jose. it overturned blocking all four lanes of traffic. fire officials say the driver was significantly injured and was taken to the hospital. no other injuries were reported. about 50-gallons of diesel fuel spilled on to the road but no liquid nitrogen escaped from that tanker. the cause is under investigation. the highway patrol says the lanes will stay closed until midnight. the wet weather here means

a lot of snow in the sierra. reporter tom duhane reports from placer county this evening. >> reporter: around the 3,000- foot level tonight a slippery and tricky situation on i-80 and very poor traction. >> with a storm like this chain control will fluctuate from different locations and a lot of people will wind up getting stuck where the snowfall is pretty heavy. >> reporter: this pick-up truck lost control one of the many spin-out casualties. >> as usual in winter weather going to fast, lost control. >> any injuries? >> no injuries. >> reporter: this man trying to return to the bay area got turned around. >> santa clara. >> reporter: but you are eastbound headed to reno? >> yes, we took the wrong exit so trying to get back home. >> reporter: you have to get up to the next exit and turn around. >> yes. >> reporter: drivers began struggling with chains which were required to go any further into the mountains. the first time how hard was it? >> my buddy without him we would never get these on, man.

man, it is pretty crazy out here. people are sliding, you know. man, it's crazy up here. >> that was tom duhane reporting. all of that snow has skiers and snowboarders, shredders and snowball enthusiasts heading to the sierra. if you are going take note: governor schwarzenegger today declared a state of emergency in barstow after a chemical used in rocket fuel was found in that city's water supply. more than 40,000 customers right now are without drinking water and many businesses have been forced to close. the golden state water company said it learned thursday that water samples showed high levels of perc4-8 and boiling and filtering the water does not help. >> in new orleans more than 300,000 people are affected tonight by a widespread boil water order. the largest such order since

hurricane katrina. it was issued early this morning as a precaution after a power failure at the city's main treatment plant caused a large drop in water pressure. crews right now are testing water sample for bacteria. the boil water order is expected to continue at least until tomorrow afternoon. police today released the identity of a man fatally shot on an east oakland street. 20-year-old allen was shot just after 7:00 last night on 88th avenue near mccar thursday boulevard. he had just gotten off a 57 line bus. police say the shooter may have been on the bus as allen was a at laney college. there is no word of a motive or an arrest in the case. federal regulator versus cleared the way for one of the nation's largest energy producers to build a power plant in hayward. the environmental protection agency this week rejected an effort to have cal pine court's federal air permit revoked. critics questioned whether the best technology has been selected to reduce emissions from the plant. they also raised concerns about

the effect of hot plumes on aircraft at hayward airport. they are ready to begin work on the 90-acre site at depot road and enterprise avenue. 41 foster children from alameda county now have permanent homes. today the county hosted its annual adoption day. the judges and court staff volunteered to expedite the process and finalize adoptions. the families gathered to celebrate and sign their paperwork to welcome their newest members. >> we talked about what this day really means. and in one word, it means being loved. it means having a sense of completion. >> there are currently 1600 foster children in alameda county since it began 11 years ago, the adoption day event has helped 600 foster children find loving homes. >> giving thanks, the gift hundreds of east bay families received right before the holidays. also we are on storm watch tonight which bay area peaks may have snow on them in the

[ music ] the heaviest rain cell versus moved out of the bay area. but still quite a bit of activity on life storm tracker ii. you can see the coverage and all of the whites showing up to our east. that's the snow out towards sierra and south lake tahoe. closer to home the scattered rain showers up in the north bay. in fact, this is actually moved out to the east over the passed few minutes moving awas the bay out towards richmond. and also right around berkeley.

moving the maps across towards the east bay right around danville and dublin. the darker shades of green do correspond to some heavier cells. especially that yellow cell just to the north of alamo still tracking some moderate activity in this region. in the south bay for the santa cruz mountains out towards morgan hill and gillroy san jose reporting some moderate rainfall. the bulk of the activity heading to the south of that point. rainfall totals over the past few hours. a big rain. look at san francisco with that thunderstorm moving in picking up over an inch of rain. oakland 0.95. you can see the activity moving across the bay area over the past 12 hours. still some more totals to show you coming up for you. you will see for this panel coming up for concord, livermore, hayward and redwood see 1.33. san jose last check over the past 24 hours reporting 0.84 with the bulk of the action moving in earlier this evening. as far as tomorrow morning partly to mostly cloudy skies.

temperatures on the cold side once again. upper 30s to the 40s. san francisco 46. san jose 41. and livermore right around 40 degrees. here you can't see the sat lit and the radar. there is that circulation, that cold pull of air is still in place. it is going to gradually move out to the east for tomorrow. so with that some more breaks in the showers. a few showers snow levels coming down to 2500 feet. but the sun and cloud mix. could have mostly cloudy skies at one time. partly cloudy skies a little bit after that point as well. a sun and cloud mix for tomorrow. pretty much the same deal for monday and tuesday. a chance of a few showers still. mostly on the light side. the temperatures come up just a few degrees. but the cool weather pattern will stick around. winter storm warning in place right now for the lake tahoe area until 10:00 sunday. additional snowfall 1-2 feet. here is our forecast model. put this into motion tomorrow morning. the chance of some scattered showers. best chance for tomorrow afternoon will be in the south bay. but this is all mostly on the light site. not a lot to show you. with he could have a break between 1-4 tomorrow afternoon.
