6:03 am
off the read because they were parked there. we couldn't stay there out of safety reasons. now chp getting those drivers out of the way. further back down you can see the flashing lights of the emergency vehicles still on the scene. firefighters down there. two lanes are still blocked as they try to clear this. this all started around 4:30 this morning. from what we can gather at this point it started with a white pickup truck. i want to show you video of that white truck. i did talk to the driver this morning. he said he hit a palette that was in the roadway. it damaged the vehicle so much it had to be towed off of the roadway. as that happened more accidents happened. and there were other vehicles involved. what we gathered from the other drivers we talked to is that they were driving past this accident and they hit other debris. that gave them flat tires. here's what the drivers say happened. >> there was this -- i'm not sure what it was. there's big debris and i ran it over and all i heard my car
6:04 am
jerking. i lose control and now have a flat tire. >> i just come on the freeway before san pablo just past the exit and dot over into the fast lane. i don't know what it was i hit. i hit something. >> reporter: back live you're taking a look at the drivers that you just heard from their vehicles as they are along this side of the exit ramp now as chp trying to get them out of any kind of dangerous situation because traffic is moving. you can see it looks like they may have just stopped traffic a little bit again as they try to get people past that underpass just over san pablo dam road. get that debris out of the way and get this back open. they called for a cig alert. we know there are some fire trucks over there. we don't know how long it's going to take to completely clear this. a lot of debris on the roadway. and at last count we think three, maybe four other vehicles involved after that initial accident. still a bit of a mess out here. it is still raining. so you may have some trouble if

6:06 am
the strikes came during south korean military drills in the disputed her time border area. south korea responded by firing dozens of rounds of its own and deploying fighter jets. it's unclear how many north koreans were killed. the drama is unfolding as north korea also flexes its muscle by showing off a more advanced than expected nuclear facility. president obama is getting regular updates. the white house has issued a statement early this morning strongly condemning these attacks. and declaring that the u.s. is firmly committed to the defense of south korea. reporting live from washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:06. fire damages a san francisco home of an elderly couple just hours ago. firefighters at 21st avenue and savings and loan boulevard before midnight. they found smoke and flames on the first floor. an elderly man and woman inside the house escaped along with one of their dogs.

sadly though one of their other dogs died in this fire. firefighters say it was hard to put the fire out because the flames were actually inside the walls. part of the house was being renovated at the time. but investigators still aren't sure what caused the fire. this morning a walnut creek restaurant will give away 1600 turkeys to anyone in need. the give away is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the 1515 restaurant located at 1515 main street in walnut creek. relatives and friends of the restaurant raised the monefor the turkeys during a charity golf tournament this past summer. >> we know a lot of people are in need. time now 6:07. we have major traffic problems. sal has all the details. >> that's right. that's the crash claudine's been talking about on 80 westbound. the secondaccident related west 80 at san pablo dam road
6:08 am
causing traffic problems. they're still working on clearing it. drivers say that debris caused the accident as you heard them tell claudine. also in this commute there's a crash southbound 101 at broadway coming down the peninsula. looks like it's determined to be noninjury however traffic will be busy in that area. let's go to live pictures. 80 at king vale. 80 is shut down between three miles east of gold run and the state line. now in truck ee some vehicles are moving as we showed you earlier but that's just to get them out of there. no new vehicles being allowed past 80 at gold run eastbound up to the nevada state line because of snow conditions because of basically really bad driving. a bunch of accidents and chp then pulled the plug and said no more until this weather improves. very windy steve's been telling us. just not good driving conditions. use 50 instead if you have to go but bring the chains.
6:09 am
they're required. move along to highway 4 here bay area. rain moving through. steve says it's more like showers but, again, it really doesn't matter once the road is wet we have a lot of fender benders. and people not you of course people don't drive well in the rain it seems. so just be careful that other guy who's driving like a fool. 6:08. let's go to steve. that is correct, sal. >> yes, sir. >> up in the sierra we'll have snow totals here in a second. this is a bigger event for them. you can see why. it continues to add up and stack up as far as the snow goes also the wind gusts 55 to 60 miles per hour. winter storm warning is out. now for us we're seeing some hit and miss showers. some of these could be brief at times. but really heavy rain, the front is right there. it's starting to slice through. the key is crescent city now 37 degrees with gusts to 35 miles per hour. there's your cold air. the front is now moving through. this will be the bigger story later on. it will be the cold air more than any rain for us. we're on the western edge of this but brief heavy rain for a while. really it's up in the sierra

6:13 am
6:14 am
6:15 am
in the sierra nevada very cold air now starting to move in. but for us we are looking for some off and on rain in the morning. nothing too heavy but it's moving right through areas that really don't want rain right now and that's pacifica. this morning's weather has work crews near the crumbling cliff in pacifica. of course they're on high alert and also some heavy rain might give way to strong wind. we have gusts about 30 miles an hour. so this could create some erosion problems. jade hernandez joins us live from pacifica. hi, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we can feel gusts this morning. in fact it stopped raining
6:16 am
right now. but about 20 minutes ago it was raining pretty hard. this storm has weakened an already weak crumbling cliff. today we can show you the equipment that crews will actually use to help shore up the cliff face on the apartment building nearby. pacifica's building safety department says there haven't been any major changes to the area in months. but the wet and soggy weather did bring down clumps of the cliff face over the weekend scaring those resident who is live around this area. we've been told the wall being put into place designed to hold the sandy buff in place will be installed today. the work being done on the backside of the bluff apartment complex. it's preventive. and the safety department has been pushing for eight months to get some of this work done. but now it has to be complete. >> the erosion is eminent. it's all there. if we get a lot of rain, it's going to erode the cliff. and the coastal commission just kind of really has to start
6:17 am
looking at that. >> reporter: pacifica isn't the only city which needs to protect itself against the harsh rain. in san francisco the public utilities workers kept busy yesterday. crews cleared debris off the top of the sewage grades and vacuumed them out. storms continue they won't back up. coming up we're going to talk to a few residents here in pacifica to see how they're bracing themselves and we'll have more about how crews will be shoring up that cliff later this morning. reporting live, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:17. in other news new york times is reporting that a taliban imposter has been taking part in secret peace talks with the afghan government for several months now. the newspaper says the man said he was the taliban's second in command. but his real identity was exposed by another man participating in those talks who knows the real second in command. nato and afghan officials say they held three meetings with the man who reportedly received

large sums of money to be a part of those negotiations. according to the wall street journal iran's parliament launched a petition yesterday to begin debate on whether to impeach president. the parliament is accusing the president and his government of 14 counts of illegal acts. this is the first time in iran's history the parliament has discussed impeaching the president. bay area travelers flying during the thanksgiving holiday will find themselves right in the middle of a national controversy. all three bay area airports, san francisco, oakland and san jose, have the new full body scanners that have been criticized because of the details images they reveal. some security experts say the real effort to keep passengers safe needs to focus on identifying potential terrorists. but that even the most invasive screening isn't enough. >> prisons use much more thorough screening than anything we're ever going to see at the airport and yet contraband gets smuggled into
6:19 am
prisons all the time. there is no perfect security screening. >> very few passengers actually go through the full body scans. for example at sfo there are 45 security lanes but only nine full body scanners. passengers only have to go through enhanced pat downs if they refuse to go through the body scanner or if they trigger an alarm while going through the metal detector. now some critics of the new screening procedures are calling for a national day of protests tomorrow. one of the busiest travel days of the year. they want air travelers to opt out of the scanners and choose the pat downs which take up more time. officials at sfo are considering setting up a special line for people who choose to opt out so that they don't slow down the rest of the passengers. all right. time now 6:19. we have major traffic problems this morning. and wet roads. sal has all the details. sal. >> all right. we do have very slow traffic now on the bay bridge coming in to san francisco. you can see people are just
6:20 am
slowing down because of the wet weather. people drive slower as they should when the conditions aren't right. and you can be cited for driving too fast for the conditions whatever the speed limit. so just be careful out there if you're driving on -- or into san francisco it looks okay so far. of course we still have problems all over the bay because of this wet weather moving through. highway 4 is pretty slow. in fact you can barely see it because of the clouds and rain here in bay point. the big problem continues to be 80 westbound as you head down to richmond out of vallejo. in san pablo a crash at west 80 san pablo dam road been there for more than an hour now. first accident happened at 4:30 followed by a second crash from debris. on the peninsula it's been pretty slow. now we have a new crash southbound 280 reported just came in not even on the map yet. 6:20. let's go to steve. thank you. some cloudy skies. bursts of moderate rain and then we get a little bit of
6:21 am
wind as well. so the system is sliding through the. the cold air's now plunging into northern california as temperatures up towards eureka and crescent city now in the upper 30s. pretty good tweet there said martinez coming down. there you go. along highway 4 from concord to pittsburgh and antioch that's occasionally some moderate rain. but it's just kind of scattered this morning. the front is still right around lake county. that's where the cold air will start to move in. winter storm warning continues up in the mountains until 6:00 p.m. the snowfall just incredible anywhere from 3 feet to 7 feet. and more today until 6:00 p.m. winter storm warning really just take today really not a good day to go. there have been gusts to 60 miles an hour. turning colder by this evening. cloudy with off and on rain. highs in the 50s. sfo if you're heading out out of and on rain as well. partly cloudy skies. temperatures starting to plunge after the noon hour. so dress accordingly. 50s on the temps.
6:22 am
everyone's close. i did see livermore just checked in with 48. that's the coolest i can find. 40 eureka. 37 crescent city. there's the leading edge of the cold air. it's on its way. you get a good look at it right there. the front is just slicing through from northern california down to around just by eureka. that's very cold air going over the water ocean temperature. that's why you're seeing clouds there. off and on rain, mostly cloudy. windy at times. some of the rain in the higher elevations but about a quarter to half an inch for most should cover it. cold air arrives tonight and you'll notice it. very cold tomorrow. wind protected areas on thanksgiving morning will see low to mid-20s. friday mostly sunny and then a warmer system arrives. more rain on saturday. well, in the last half hour the commerce department reported the u.s. economy expanded faster during the third quarter than expected. the 2.5% growth rate topped last month's estimate by half a percent. economists say the revision comes as exports as well as consumer and business spending

exceeded original forecasts. delta airlines says it will consider issuing refunds to some passenger who is cancel travel plans because of the new airport security measures. the airline says it will give travelers their money back but only on a case by case basis for customers worried about the new screening procedures mostly for health concerns. delta says this is not a new refund policy. most other major airlines say customers can get their money back only if they bought refundable tickets. time now 6:23. the wait could soon be over for natalie holloway's parents. the crime lab results that may answer the questions of what happened to that missing teenager in aruba. and a colorful mural in downtown napa comes under fire. the images some people say should be removed.

6:32 am
accident. we don't know exactly what happened. but i can tell you that this white pickup was involved. it happened about 4:30 this morning. i talked to the driver of the white pickup truck and he said he hit a palette in the middle of the road. we didn't see the other vehicle at the time but that caused a bunch of debris and messed up his vehicle. then the second accident happened. there were three vehicles involved in that accident. and there were also several other people who had flat tires because they drove through the debris after that first accident. we talked to a couple people who had their tires flattened by that debris and then this is what they say happened. >> there was just i'm not sure what it was there was this big debris and i just ran it over. and all i heard was my car jerking. i lose control and now i have a flat tire. >> i just come on the freeway before san pablo just past the exit. and got over into the fast lane and i don't know what it was i hit. i hit something. >> reporter: after that accident there was a third solo
6:33 am
vehicle accident. i can tell you this vehicle that we are seeing on the roadway right now just west of the san pablo dam road exit the entire front end of that vehicle was damaged. and the chp told me that driver was taken to the hospital complaining of pain. there was a cig alert because there's a lot of issues with clearing debris and getting this all cleared off the roadway. that alert has been lifted at this point. but when we drove all the way down to hill top we could see traffic as far as the eye could see. it is definitely seeing a bout but still rough through here. ktvu channel 2 news. this morning's rain is only making things worse at the airport. ktvu channel 2 reporter kraig debro joins us now from sfo with that part of our story this morning. kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. a lot's changed since about an hour ago. i'm going to ow you the security line here.
6:34 am
it's backed up probably farther than i've seen it. it could be just a configuration. i want to show you something else. this has to do with i believe with what we've been hearing about in the past couple days. that is pat down searches. take a look at this line. it's very long. but if you go down and take a look at the ticket booth it's not very long. is this the result of some kind of extra security? we'll have to see. over the next two or three days there's going to be a decreasing amount of travelers. despite the rain here no delays with departures at sfo. but if you're traveling to seattle, chicago or washington d.c. today snow is forecast for those cities. >> right now there's no impact whatsoever. we're just tracking the weather. maybe you might see some delays pop up depends on how the weather comes to be. >> reporter: he says there will be about 118,000 travelers passing through sfo today. there were 121 yesterday. that was the peak day. and about 116,000 tomorrow on the wednesday before thanksgiving.
6:35 am
monday again actually is a peak day for air travelers at sfo. one major obstacle many travelers have an opinion about are pat down searches. >> i think that's security. it's security. >> it seems like an invasion and a breech of trust. >> reporter: what about our security and safety? >> seems totally adequate. >> reporter: take a look at this. we caught this around 6:00 in the morning. some people complained about if you will intimacy of the searches. the intrusiveness of the searches. this is about as bad as it got this morning. at least so far we've seen. however polls show americans in favor of tsa searches as they are. refusal likely result in air travelers not being allowed to go on flights. take a look at live picture again. we're going to look into this actually because this line is a lot longer than the lines at the ticket counter. i'm going to see if intrusive searches or extensive searches are the result of this line.
6:36 am
reporting live in san francisco, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> kraig, before you go were you able to find out if any airports just to give people some information any other airports across the country closed for people heading out? >> reporter: well, no. like mike said there aren't any delays throughout the country. he also told me he wouldn't really have any huge numbers until around 9:00 a.m. this morning. but we're keeping an eye on it because as we saw the graphic earlier chicago, seattle and washington d.c. snow at those airports, washington and chicago. used to it in chicago not so much. keep an eye on that. a lot of flights out of here in seattle. those three cities are very popular but especially seattle because they're not used to it up there. >> right. amazing to see how many people are trying to get away a little early for the weekend. a new friendly competition in san francisco for muni riders. yahoo has installed digital video screens at 20 bus shelters in the city with games ranging from visual puzzles to
6:37 am
sports trivia and waiting passengers can challenge another to a game. each time you win your neighborhood gets 100 points. and the neighborhood with the most points gets to host a block party and will feature a rock band the guys on the treadmills. did you ever see that video how they got popular singing on the treadmill? >> tough say that i usually know these things and i don't. >> it was pretty funny. >> i feel so old and out of it. >> we know what you know about traffic though. that's right. it's been going very slow as you head out in many areas. let's go out and take a look at highway 4. we have an accident westbound 4 at chicago highway. that accident involved a car down the embankment but the person is not seriously injured however traffic is slowing down. also this morning we are looking at the commute if you're driving on 680 south through walnut creek it's going to be slow. bay bridge slowing for about a ten minute wait coming into san

6:39 am
it's coming. this is a bigger event for the sierra nevada. this is almost a perfect set up to give them an additional couple feet of snow on top of the three to seven they've already had. for us we'll get some rain. so far hasn't been that heavy. santa cruz mountains the most i could find .81. our observer in boulder creek about .06. hayward not bad. .41. petaluma .02. oakland and dublin .17. not a lot. but the snow totals these are just you can add to these. these aren't -- you know there's been more than this but as of last check bo real 78, 80 alpine plus. 75 squaw valley. you know there's more than that higher peaks. north star 65. homewood 62. heavily 50 plus. i know at the keys there's been three and a half feet. if anybody in truck ee watching right now tweet me or e-mail me and say here's what's going on.
