good afternoon. breaking news out of bodega bay. a boating accident has left one man dead and two hospitalized. it happened a half-mile away from the beach here at 9:00 this morning. these are live pictures from newschopper2. authorities say there were five people crab fishing from the boat when a crab line got tangled in the propeller. that stopped the engine and gael-force winds tipped the boat water. you can see some of the white caps out there. one 60-year-old man was pronounced dead on the beach. two others were brought to hospitals, two others were treated for hypothermia. the person who called for help was in a second boat. the coast guard says no one was wearing a life vest. a dramatic breakthrough in the fight against h.i.v. and a.i.d.s. a new study has revealed a

simple way to prevent h.i.v., the virus that can lead to a.i.d.s. the lead researcher is a professor at ucsf. ktvu's jade hernandez joins us with details and reaction in a live report. good afternoon, jade. >> reporter: good afternoon. for people who are sexually active, condom use may no longer be the only way to prevent h.i.v. the new discovery involves an fda approved drug already being used to ep treat people -- to help treat people with the disease. so can a pill a day prevent the disease? researchers believe they found a very strong backup. dr.robert grant, the lead investigator of this three-year clinical trial circumstances a ucsf professor. dr.grant's global project involves nearly 3,000 participants from si different countries, including -- from six different countries including 120 right here in san

francisco. researchers found participants who took true -- truvada lowered their chances for the disease. there was a comparison with this and those who took a placebo. >> the next step is to offer everyone access to the pill. so we can learn how best to promote the pill use among those trying to use it as a backup strategy for h.i.v. prevention. >> reporter: in a press conference held at the lbgt center researchers and community leaders discussed the findings released in the "new england journal of d this news been filtering out in the community and there's cautious excitement. >> definitely a step in the right direction to help, you know, people live longer. i just hope people people don't take advantage of that and remember to stay stay. >> reporter: it will probably

be another year or two before the pill can be offered to the public. there are concerns. one out of ten participants became nauseous in the few weeks of taking the drug and the only -- and the study only listed gay men and a small number of transgender women. john fowler will continue this story tonight at 5:00. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade. we have some new information from b.a.r.t. today about an issue that we first highlighted last night in a special report. that information deals with the amount of time b.a.r.t. officers spend on trains and platforms. something that was criticized during an independent review of the department following the shooting of oscar grant. claudine wong joins us live from oakland with more on this story. good afternoon, claudine. >> reporter: good afternoon. these new numbers give us an idea of just where crime is happening on b.a.r.t. now, b.a.r.t. is quick to point out that statistically they don't have a lot of crime. over the last few months,

56,000 people, only 300 or so people reported crimes. that being said, crime is happening and we wanted to know where because the answer to that question could affect an issue that's top priority at the police department. b.a.r.t. police will tell you visibility is a top priority, a new shift in the past year about how things should have been done. there wasn't a consistent, okay, we need to be highly visible at key times during our system. >> reporter: we know b.a.r.t. riders want to see officers on trains. >> well, considering that they are b.a.r.t. police, i would think at least half the shift. >> reporter: how but visible are they? according to internal documents obtained by ktvu, in may,up, and july of this year, b.a.r.t. officers during a ten-hour shift made, on average, six platform checks and on average rode trains for a total of 11 to 16 minutes. >> 12 minutes on a train in a

ten-hour shift, does that seem reasonable to you? >> no. >> reporter: today we took a look -- closer look at this issue with the numbers with b.a.r.t. those numbers focus on where crime is happening. we looked at statistics given to us from b.a.r.t. from may until now. >> the crime level is much lower on the trains than the pay system on the b.a.r.t. >> reporter: 22% of crime happened on trains. the rest of the crime are happening in the station -- crimes are happening in the station or the parking lots. 39% in each. when it comes to property crimes, 6% happened on trains, 23 in stations and a whopping 71% in the parking lot of b.a.r.t. >> we need to be better. now, we have a large system. we have limited resources. so we have to be very smart how we deploy our resources. >> reporter: now, while these numbers may give us a better

idea why we may not be seeing more officers on trains, b.a.r.t.'s commander says he understands, you not only have to make riders safe, you have to make them feel safe. live in oakland, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. it may not be raining right where you are right now. but earlier umbrellas were out as a wet weather system moved across the area. a steady rainfall came down in oakland and the east bay. there was a scattered rainfall in san francisco, the north and south bay and in the santa cruz mountains. the weather system is bridging a lot of snow to the sierra where winter storm warnings are in effect. the snow is causing problems for motorists, chains are required on highways 50 and 80. 80, in fact, is closed to trucks from apple gate to placer county to the nevada statelines. steve paulson, our meteorologist, is monitoring the conditions which are expected to get colder. >> that's right,er tory.

we have some sunshine. most of the rain has moved ow. it's been a huge event in the sierra. the wind is starting to pick up. northwest 18, sfo west at 26. it says san jose west at 23. you can't see it. but it's really up in the mountains. it continues to snow like crazy up there. you put it into motion and you can see it has gusts up to 50 to 60 miles an hour. a winter storm warning will continue. travel, take it easy because it probably won't happen on 80 or 50. if it does, it will take a while. for us we're starting to see the system move through. but the colder air is beginning to seep in. in fact, temperatures are beginning to drop fast and they will take a tumble tonight. some of the snow totals, you can't update them fast enough. over 80 inches since friday. north star, 70. i mean, about 4 feet of snow has fallen in truckee alone. you know north star has had a

heck of a lot more than that. the winter -- winter weather continues until this evening. a freeze warning starts at 1:00 a.m. and takes us until 9:00 a.m. lows 20 to 32 depending upon the wind. i think thanksgiving morning will be colder. but inland areas will be below 32 for several hours starting tonight in to tomorrow, tori. so, i mean, the snow up there before thanksgiving is a really impressive number. but for us this is pretty cold for november. >> all right. thank you, steve. >> you bet. this morning, wet weather caused a lot of problems on bay area roads. the highway patrol says they responded to an unusual number of crashes this morning. there were about 30 highway accidents between 5:00 and 9:00 a.m. including this scene on interstate 80 in -- in san pablo. it involved three separate crashes.

there were also several disabled vehicles because they ran through debris at the crash scene. >> i'm not even sure what it was. there was big debris and i just ran it over. all i heard was my car jerking. i lose control and now i have a flat tire. >> i had just come on the freeway before san pablo just past the exit and got over into the fast lane and i don't know what it was i hit. i hit something. >> there was at least one injury in this crash. as usual, the had highway patrol advises drivers to slow down in the rain and increase following distances. you can find up-to-the-minute traffic information at ktvu.com. some pre-- it's been pretty busy at local airports as some people head out of town for thanksgiving. so what's been the reaction to the controversial airport security screening and has that caused any delays. >> kraig debro joiferns us live from sfo -- joins us live from

sfo. >> reporter: there's been mixed reak shue. we're at the screening right next to american airlines, terminal 3. you look behind me, the line is moderate to small. you look there and there's the full body scan. sfo has already hit the peak, 120,000 travelers passed through here yesterday. tuesday's travelers are concerned about two things -- weather and security. wet weather is nothing new at sfo and it didn't cause any delays departures or arrivals. instead, they are looking at the bad ripple effect from other cities that could affect here. >> right now, we're just tracking the weather. maybe at 9:00, we might see some delays pop up. it depends on the weather. >> reporter: despite the weather and economy, aaa says more than 5 million americans plan to make trips over the four-day thanksgiving holiday weekend and that's an increase of 11% from last year. >> we've heard a lot of

reports, especially 23r aaa -- from aaa, of people driving instead of flying. >> reporter: and the worry this soo son, security screening. >> it seems like an invasion and -- >> i mean, just lock the cockpit. >> if there is an option to be scanned, i would rather be be scanned -- i would rather be scanned. >> reporter: what's your issue with it? >> invasion of space. >> reporter: this is the alternative, the pat-down search. some passengers have complained that they are intrusive and very public. during this search, the tsa agent takes the edge of her hand and guides it between the cups of a woman's bra. in another search, a male agent first checks the seat of a male passenger's jeans and then the crouch. all of it in plenty of view of other passengers and our

camras. i think that's security. we need security here. >> in hawaii, they just -- only if you beat. you just have to go through it really fast. >> reporter: and a check of the weather at other airports, including sfo on the faa's website said there are no significant delays across the country. you hear a lot of passengers complaining. but according to "the daily mail" tsa screeners traveled by -- contacted by travel blog say they hate dealing with travelers who are obese and keep poor personal i hygiene. no real delays here and weather looks good at airports across the country. reporting live at sfo, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, kraig? in in seattle they are dealing with the first severe storm. at least three people died. schools are closed. flights were delayed last night after a cargo plane skidded off an icy runway.

that a jawbone found in aruba does not belong to missing american teenager, natalee holloway. a tourist found the bone on a beach earlier this month. it was tested to see if it belocked to holloway who disappeared during a vacation with classmates in 2005. but a tooth still attached to the bone did not match holloway's dental records. it's unclear who the bone belongs to. police say joran van der sloot remains a suspect. oakland police are searching for two men who sexually assaulted and robbed three roommates. police say the suspects first stked -- ited a 26th -- first attacked a 26-year-old woman. then they say the man with the gun forced them to take take them to the oakland apartment. officers say they sexually assaulted and robbed the two

roommates. $30,000 information is offered. police looking for women would robbed three other women. it happened around 6:00 last night on contra costa boulevard. police say the suspects asked to borrow a cell phone and knocked the women to the ground and started kicking them. police say the suspects escaped with one stolen purse. the descriptions are sketch yu but police say they are african- american, late teens to early 20s. they range in height from 5'4" to 5'7 foote foote. foofs were called to 24-g9 avenue sloan boulevard and when they arrived they found flames on the first floor. one dog died in the fire. firefighters say they had trouble putting it out because the flames were inside the

wall. part of the home is being ren nateed at the time but investigators are not sure if that's what sparked the fire. tobacco sales had licensing is on the agenda for two communities. santacruz subpoenas and the city are looking at -- supervisors and the city are looking at requiring stores to have permits. businesses would have to pay $255 in santa cruz. $425 in unincorporated santa clara county. the money collected would go to programs to prevent the sale of cigarettes to minors. work crews are shoring up a -- near the apartments on the esplanade.

eight people. it's all start of the city's 26th annual turkey ride. earlier this year, officers raised about $8,000 for the basket for riding bicycles for more than 2,000 miles. >> happy thanksgiving. >> those needing a helping hand lined up if front of a walnut creek restaurant, the 1515 restaurant lounge handed out turkeys today for anyone in need. the owner says the restaurant bought 1,000 turkeys to give away last year, he ran out. this year, they bought twice as many to meet the demands. >> people from other stores, people from locations down the street, all over the outskirts of walnut creek, people who are less unfortunate, homeless, shelter, anybody who needs them will help them. >> the giveaway began at 11:00 a.m. and they will hand out turkeys until they are gone. ahead another check on stocks
