are cold -- there's a lot of temperatures that have been colder than this. on marsh creek road, our observer has 26. that's cold. pinole, sebastopol, 27. losgatos, 29. we have some cold temperatures. we'll have your ok coming up. today is one of the busiest travel days of the year. so far it doesn't seem that a national day of protest is affecting security screeners at bay area airports this morning. claudine wong is at sfo and she's gonna tell us how things are going out there. >> reporter: good morning, dave. yes, more than 120,000 people expected to go through sfo today alone as this travel rush is on. if you are headed to the

airport, things look really good. sfo's spokesperson doesn't expect that to change the next several hours as more and more people arrive at airport. but the big issue is the new screening procedures and how long that will take you. sfo says eight to ten minutes to get through the security line and whether you choose the body scanner or the', dan -- dash and that's whether you choose the body dwaner -- body scanner other the pat-down. people we tooked to -- we talked to this morning say they just want to get to their destination today and any protect protest they wouldn't be happy about it. >> i'm not worried about the screening. i've been screened. i have metal inside me. i've been, what do they say,

groped, for the past ten years. >> today is not the day to address the concerns about that. i think it will make everybody miserable. i hope that doesn't happen. >> reporter: now, we haven't seen any evidence of anyone taking part in this boycott or protest this morning. but as always, there are backup plans in place. >> the tsa has a variety of back-up plans. they would be simple or complex. if people want to be'ed down we'll have to -- patted-down we'll have to create a line for that. >> reporter: if you haven't traveled lately, you go into one of those. sfo has had one of those for about a year. they scan your body. the concern with those some people think it's too invasive. the problems people are having with the pat-downs is people think they are too invasive and

they think they've been patted down too extensiverily. things are -- extensively. so far, things seem to be going as he scheduled. live here at sfo, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we just checked in at mineta airport in san jose, officials are expecting the crowds to be about the same at this time last year. most flights through there will be very full. about 90% or more capacity expected on most flights. more than 250,000 passengers are expected to travel through the oakland international airport over the next couple of days. today being one of the busiest. travel is expected to be up about 2% this year over last year. but with plenty of parking available for travelers. we did hear from an airport spokesperson a howl of minutes ago who says there -- couple of

minutes ago who says there's been no delays so far. b.a.r.t. is running longer trains today and on sunday to accommodate passengers traveling to and from sfo and oakland international airport. there will also be longer trains on friday for holiday shoppers. in addition, b.a.r.t. is opening um 500 additional parking -- up 500ed aish signal park -- 500 additional parking spots. those extra spots are be available through the weekend. and on thanksgiving day itself, b.a.r.t. will operate on a sunday schedule. to make your holiday travel easier we have up-to-the-minute travel information at ktvu.com. you can check flight delays as well. overnight a rollover accident led to the arrest of the driver involved. it happened around 1:30 on sir francis drake boulevard. both the highway patrol and

deputies from the marin county sheriff's department were on the scene. the driver was not seriously hurt but was arrested for dui. as a reminder, today starts the maximum enforcement period where they will be looking on the -- where they will be looking for drunk drivers as more drivers hit the road for the long thanksgiving weekend. the dui checkpoints hit today and continue on sunday. sal, you're back. how are we doing out there? >> well, we're doing well out there, as a matter of fact. traffic is doing very well in many areas this morning. we're looking at the commute in oakland, 880 north and southbound trying to get to the oakland international airport, are you? well, 880 won't be a major problem for you. as of last word we have plenty of parking at the oak international airport for you. if you are driving to the bay

bridge toll plaza, it's certainly not a commute day. and if you are driving to the san francisco airport, not a big delay getting there with your car. b.a.r.t. is also running longer trains to get you to the oakland and the san francisco airport. they are running longer trains today. on and on sunday when people return. let's go to steve. we had the snow, the heavy snow up in the sierras. freeze warning is up until 8:00 this morning. lows 25 to 32. but really a lot of um ir20s to low 30 -- upper 30s. some inland areas will be below 32 for several hours. tomorrow morning looks colder too me. cold, crisp and clear. it will be mostly sunny.

weather service has issued a freeze warning for inland areas. the service says expect freezing to subfreezing temperatures between now and friday morning. when you go out and do that holiday shopping, it will be nice and cool. a bus driver we spoke to this morning said he feels both hot and cold temperatures. >> you got people coming in and going out. that door opening and closing all of the time. yesterday that blast does hit you. if you don't dress for the occasion, you are cold. i just try to dress for the row occasion -- for the occasion. >> reporter: people also want to protect their plants. with temperatures dipping below the freezing point. how do you do both? >> if you protect the root, you might lose your plant all the way down to the ground. come spring time it will come right back up if you water the

well, it's officially 41 in san francisco. but i'm getting lots of tweets from people in the city. it's colder than that. there have been some upper 30s. it's tied a record low san francisco. highs today with sunshine will be in the 50s. here's tori. the national weather service confirmed that it was a tornado that ripped through a small area near sacramento. the storm touched down in el

dorado county just before 2:00 p.m. yesterday. winds as high as 100 miles per hour created a path of destruction, ripping off a section of the roof that you saw there of, scattering pieces to the ground. the storm also knocked down a tree limb and a power pole and moved a storage tank more than a foot. >> i watched it form from the sky, funnel-shaped all the way down and watched the debris come back up off the ground. >> one man managed to capture the large clouds on his cell phone. there are no reports of injuries from the tornado so far. 7:17. new this hour, the death toll in korea could be rising from monday's attack on a south korean island. alison burns is live in our washington, d.c. roam with the latest on -- room with the latest on this. >> od morning, dave. "the associated press" is just reporting that the bodies of two construction workers have

been found in the aftermath of the attack. these are pictures from the damage of north korea's artillery barrage of the island. two south korean marines were killed. this prompted president obama to call an emergency meeting of his national security team. but the administration is being careful not to escalate the crisis. >> and moving forward we're going to take a measure and unified approach. we're gonna park with china and work with all of our six-party partners on our response. just to stress, it will be a measured and unified response. >> reporter: the u.s. has dispatched a use carrier to conduct a joint -- a joint exercise off the peninsula of korea. this starts on sunday. back to you. >> thank you, alison. 7:18.

well, the mother of a tracy man just convicted in the kidnapping and for chur of a 16- year-old boy is defending -- torture of a 16-year-old boy is defending her son. anthony waiters was convicted on all charges. waiters is a former youth football catch and lived next door to the three people who who held the 16-year-old captive for a year. now she's questioning the jury. >> the lawyers took out testimony apart. >> waiters faces possible life in prison. the three others accepted plea deals. terrifying moments for a young couple who fought off a

blades. now, the neuroscientist conducts medical test on rodents and prime eights -- primates. the professor has been targeted by animal rights groups before. last year, his car was set on fire right outside of his home. 7:23. several people in san francisco are still without gas this morning, following a car crash that set off a chain of events. the accident happened on mission near 30th street just before 7:00 last night. police say the driver of an suv suffered a medical emergency, lost control of her vehicle and hit a 21-year-old ped. a gas meter was broken. the pedestrian was taken to the hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. the condition of the driver is unknown at this time. 7:24. sal, does it still feel like the calm before the storm.

i know it's the busy getaway for the holidays. >> it does. only because today throughout the whole day, we'll see people out there going to where they are going to go. this is a look at highway 24. you can see traffic is moving along relatively well here. it's looking pretty good. even in antioch, it's not that slow. most people are not going to work. they are going somewhere else. this is a look at 880 if you are trying to get to the oakland airport. a lot of people go to the sierra for the holiday weekend. this is a look at interstate 80 in truckee and you can see that the traffic is -- well, the commute -- can you call it a commute? let me put this in here. traffic is moving along very well. 7:25, let's go to steve.

the current cold snap has many people in the bay area scrambling to stay warm. allie rasmus is in s an francisco. you've been talking to people who have to work outside. so how are they dealing with the cold this morning? >> reporter: just like everybody else. they come to work with layers. they are bundling up and drinking hot drinks to get them through the morning. out here on market street, you would be hard-pressed to not find somebody wearing a winter

coat. most of the people you see are going to work. but this morning we caught up with some people who had been on the job since 1:00 this morning. these people were checking some fiberoptic cables. they've been working outside all night. >> well, it's cold. want to put on your layers. deal with it. the work has do be -- has to be done. >> reporter: now, this kind of weather can be life- threatening. that's why san francisco has act vitted its winter shelter program -- activated its winter shelter program. five people on board this fishing boat accident were thrown into water. no one was wearing a life jacket. they were pummed by the watt -- pulled by the water of friends. >> they both know each other. they came from the same community. a number of them know the person who passed away. >> a 75-year-old man died. oakland police are out there searching for a second suspect in a violent home invasion robbery. two men broke into a house at 35th and california street about 8:30 last night. we talked to police overnight. they tell us one victim was hurt after being pistol- whipped. police tell us -- also tell us

they made one arrest and recovered a gun but still, one suspect is on the loose. police are investigating whether these men are responsible for other home invasions. in vallejo, police are investigating a horrible accident that injured an 18- month-old child that was being pushed in a stroller. police say a truck put the toddler in the intersection of georgia and napa streets. a passenger inside the truck told police, the driver never saw the mother or the baby because it was dark. 7:36. oakland will soon join san francisco in offering city- issued identification cards. the city i.d. card is targeted to residents who might have trouble obtaining a state i.d. card, such as homeless people and illegal immigrants. this card will allow people without bank accounts to avoid

high -- high check cashing fees and walking around with a lot -- with large amounts of cash. under a new law police would be required to investigate a person's legal status if there's reasonable suspicion. it would also become a crime to hire illegal immigrants. 7:37. well, the san francisco board of supervisors has made a decision on how they will select an interim mayor to replace gavin newsom when he becomes lieutenant-governor in january. up to 11 nominees will be chosen and voted on by the supervisors. if a nominee gets six or more of the votes which is a majority of the 11-member board, that person will be the interim mayor.

california's agriculture in the classroom program. both birds were raised on a foster farms nest in modesto. after the pardon, they will go to mount vernon's estate. a few minutes ago, president obama says it feels good to stop at least one shellacking this november. the cold weather is here to stay for at least the next few day. the national weather service has issued a frost warning until 9:00 this morning. another advisory goes in effect tonight from 1:00 a.m. to 9:00. steve says it had be colder tomorrow morning and the freezing temperatures could be damaging to plants in the bay area. in san jose, peen with gardens and -- many people with gardens have been buying supplies to protect the plants. >> i've got some large paradise

petaluma after an 11-year-old boy was the target of a racially motivated attack. the latino boy was walking along grenella drive last friday near the school. two teenaged boys rode up on bikes, hit him in the face with an unknown october and then shouted racial slurs. if you have any information, call petaluma police. the parents of a san jose teenager killed in a car crash last weekend. say they don't want the teenaged driver of the car to be charged. the highway patrol says the district attorney will decide that and the 17-year-old driver will likely face dui and manslaughter charges. 16-year-old jordan west was killed last weekend while riding in a car that crashed on highway 101 near blossom hill road. investigators say the driver admitted to drinking alcohol. 7:49. as many as ate fire stations in

-- eight fire stations in contra costa county may be closed. it's up to county supervisors to decide whether to tase a -- whether to place a tax measure on the ballot. california has just hired four new gas pipeline inspectors. this move came after a lot of state lawmakers had urged the p.u.c. to increase inspector staffing levels after the pipeline disaster in san bruno. it also comes days after a san francisco "chronic kell" investigation. the paper showed mile per mile, california conducts the few inspections of any other state. as expected, san francisco

supervisors voted to override newsom's veto of the fast-food measure. the legislation bans toys in children's meals that exceed 600 calories and lack fruit or vegetables. a law goes into effect of december of next year. the u.s. public interest research group says toys are safer this holiday season than they were last year. the organization tests for choking hazards as well as dangerous chemicals used to make the toys. it says this year, just four of the toys tested violated federal safety standards. the toys that did not pass include a book for babies called bright stars travel book. the wild range or toy gun. you can find a link to the complete report as well as the toy-buying guide at ktvu.com. the labor department just made an announcement about jobs

unemployment dropped to the lowest level since 2008. continuing claims also fell 142,000 to 4.18 million. 7:54. a wonderful restaurant in sausalito is getting ready for a generous tradition that happens on the eve of thanksgiving. the owner of "avatar" and his family are putting together a free dinner for everybody who comes by later today. they started cooking on monday. there you see them in the kitchen. they are gonna serve a fresh ground turkey and vegetarian enchiladas for vegetarians. they expect to feed about 1500 people. people come and enjoy thanksgiving. it means thanks and giving. we waist haven't what give back to the community -- we just

things are still moving pretty slow through here. you take a look behind the -- behind the body scanner. you either have to go through there or you have to go through pat-down to get through security and on to your gate. when we talk about security in general, it is very tight. you see that? that's actually a camera. more than 1500 at sfo. we just took a look at who was actually watching that camera. we went inside the security control center to see what was happening inside that area. what you are looking at really is -- is something that's one- of-a-kind in a world according to the airport spokesperson. this was designed for tsa and the contractors to keep an eye on the 1500-plus cameras that are in and around the airport. they can literally track you from your car all the way in. any public area in the airport or around the airport is fair game. that's one of the things they say they are doing just to keep

everyone safe. when you talk about a protest like the one you are talking about today, one of the things that it wants to do is delay people and that's one the things that passengers we talk to say he we don't want to happen. >> i agree. i don't mind at all the extra security measures if it means a safer -- safer travel. >> body scan or'? >> whatever is most efficient. >> i don't have a problem with it. to me, it's great. i would rather be safe. >> so body scan or -- body scan or'? >> either. it doesn't matter me. >> these are part of the new stepped-up security measures from the tsa. you know, if you choose the bodzy scan, that takes about 20 seconds. if you choose the pat-down takes about a minute.

protesters want passengers to take the longer -- take the locker taking one to make a point to -- longer taking one to make a point to security. this is actually about the most people we've seen all day. we do expect another rush to happen in the next couple of hours. this is how the traffic ebbs and flows. 120,000-plus, expected to fly out of sfo alone today. travelers we talked to said we're -- they simply want to get to their destination. >> all right. thank you, claudine. we've been czeching in at mineta airport is -- clerking in at mineta airport all morning where officials are expecting the crowds to be the same last year -- as last year. most flights were very full today with about 90% or more

welcome back. all over the bay area now people are scrambling to stay warm on this very cold morning. allie rasmus is in san francisco to tell us how people there are handling the cold. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we're on market street where you can see it's a little bit breezy right now. winter coats and scarves, jackets and hats are definitely the norm out here. we've been seeing people carrying warm drinks in their hands and they say walking quickly is the -- is the secret to staying warm. >> i bundle up and i have these layers. i walk. now i feel better because of walking. >> reporter: it's one thing staying warm while you are walking it to work. for people who work outside, there's not much we can do.

we have live pictures somewhere out there is interstate 80 near truckee. live pictures. it's all covered with snow. traffic is relatively smooth. we haven't seen any cars go by. there have been no major accidents reported in this area. chains are required there on 80 as well as 50. in nevada, emergency crews will head out shortly to resume their search for a missing hiker in the sierra foothills. we spoke to a deputy at the washoe county sheriff's office who told us crews are being briefed right now in the search for a 55-year-old man, rick gentry of reno. he used his ten to call 911 on sunday saying he was lost. he crews found his hat, one glove, a fannie pack and a water bottle on monday and they are concentrating their search in the area. a fishing trip turned

deadly off bow day go bay. a crab line cable got entabled with the propeller. five people were thrown into the water. no one was wearing a life jacket. they were pulled from the water by friends in another boat. >> they both know each other, came from the same community. a number of them know the person who passed away. this is obviously a very traumatic event. >> 71-year-old man of sacramento died. the coast guard says boaters should file a float plan, tell people where they are going and when they plan to return and always wear a life jacket. 8:33. oakland police are out there searching for a second suspect. two men broke into the house near5th and california about 8:30 last night. police say one victim was hurt after being pistol-whipped.

they also tell us they made one arrest. they recovered a gun. one suspect is out he there on the loose. police are investigating whether these men are responsible for other home invasions. in vallejo, police are investigating an accident where an 18-month-old child was injured while being pushed in the stroller. police say a truck hit the toddler in the intersection of georgia and napa streets yesterday evening. the child and the mother were in the crosswalk at the time. the passenger in that truck told police the driver never saw the mother or the baby because it was dark. there's unexpectedly good news from the labor department this morning. the number of people filing new unemployment claims dropped to 407,000. that's the lowest level since july of 2008, down 3,000 from the week before. continuing claims also fell

142,000 to 4.18 million. california's unemployment rate remains at 12.4%. how far, california did add 39,000 jobs last month. the labor department released that report. that's the most in four years. a sign that the job picture may be gradually getting better. labor experts say california has several industries poised to rebound in the next year or so. >> the im-- the improvement in tourism, the improvement in entertainment down south, technology. hopefully, you put it all together and people will begin to notice the improvement in job students -- opportunities. >> some of the people taking those jobs may be overqualified. analysts warn it could take a long time for people to get jocks like they might have had five years ago. 8:35. oakland will soon join san francisco in offering city- issued identification cards. the city i.d.

card is targeted atses who might have trouble obtaining a state i.d. card such as homeless people and illegal immigrants. oakland's card will had also double as an atm debit card. that's a first in the country. it will allow people without bank accounts to avoid high- check cashing fees and walking around with large amounts of cash. a tee party activist from belmont is collecting signatures on the ballot and under this new law police would be required to investigate a person's legal status if there is reasonable spin in-- suspicion. it would also become a crime to hire illegal immigrants. the author needs to check around 400,000 signatures by april 21st to get this on the 2012 ballot. the san francisco board of supervisors has made a decision how they will pick an interim mayor to replace garnen newsom. up to 11 nominees will be

chosen and then voted on by th supervisors. if a nominated -- nominee gets six or more votes, which is the majority, they will be chosen as the next mar. the interim mayor will serve out the rest of gavin new some term which -- that will run through january 12th, 2012. oakland police booted jean quan's car because she had more than $1,000 in outstanding parking tickets. the paper said the technician of the -- at the police ran a check and then covered it had ten outstanding tickets. the tech ordered the car booted but the paper said within a couple of hours, the boot was taken off indicating ms. quan must have taken care of those tickets. we want to check in with sal. hopefully not too many tickets out there on the road. have to remember to drive carefully.

the parents of a san jose teenager with was killed in an accident last week doesn't want the driver to be charged. but the highway patrol says the d.a. decides that. jordan west was killed when the car she was in crashed near 101 and blossom hill road. they say the driver has admitted to drinking alcohol. after of the the holidays, residents will be surveyed to see how much they would be willing to shell out. california just hired four new gas line pipe. inners. this move came after many state lawmakers uncked the p.u.c.

to boost inspector staffing levels after last september's pipeline disaster in san bruno. it also comes days after a san francisco chronic kell investigation. the paper uncovered records showing that mile for mile, california conducts the fewest pipeline inspections of any major state. california's ban on fast food meals with the toys is back on. as expected, san francisco supervisors voted to override mayor newsom's veto of the measure. the legislation bans toys and children's meals that exceed 600 calories and lack fruit or vegetables. the law goes into effect in december of last year. the u.s. public interest research group says toys are safer this holiday season than they were last year. the organization tests for choking hazards as well as dangerous chemical used to make toys. it says this year, just four of the 260 toys it tested violated

running on time so far at bay area airports, we're getting word of some delays in other parts of the country. we're hearing of delays up to 45 minutes in atlanta. 15 minutes in chicago, houston and charlotte, north carolina. the major airports in new jersey are expecting -- experiencing 30 to 35 minute delays at this hour. as you know, it's the morning before thanksgiving and right now, starting to get real busy at the super markets all over the bay area. a short time ago we took these pictures from the safeway store on market and church in san francisco. a lot of grocery shoppers want to stretch their food clairs throughout this holiday season. a lot of things they put on sale, but the other stuff that you get to go with your trimmings and everything is a lot higher. you think you are getting a bargain here and it's not a bargain on the other end. there's also a government report that shows thanksgiving dinner may cost more this year than last year.

but prices they say are still below the record price set back in 2007. several retail chains all over the u.s. are getting a jump-start on black friday by opening up tomorrow, thanksgiving day, as well. here's a partial list -- walmart and kmart will be open all day. sears will be open in many locations starting at 7:00 in the morning until noontime. the gap is opening from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. the banana republic and old navy, about noontime until 6:00 and toys 'r' us is opening at 10:00 p.m. tomorrow night. 8:52. it's an open invitation. bay area restaurants offering a free -- a bay area restaurant is offering a predictor for everyone tonight to stop by. and no huffin' and puffin' about this. it's a holiday treat for the giants' fans.
