an uptick in business. ktvu channel channel 2 noon news starts right now. good afternoon. topping our news this noontime, within the past hour, word came into the ktvu newsroom that los angeles district attorney steve cooley has conceded the race of california attorney general to san francisco d.a., camilla harris. in the race, she leads him by 50,000 votes. but cooley's spokesman said cooley did not feel there were enough votes left to overtake harris's lead. harris's campaign issued a statement saying "the counties continue to tabulate votes and district attorney believes it's appropriate to wait until all of the votes are

counted." our other top story is the bay area's cold snap. although the freeze warning is officially over for the day. people in the bay area are still feeling the chill outside. we have two reports on the cold snap. kraig debro has news on both serious and fun ways people are keeping warm. >> there was a little breeze this morning. we only settled in with three record lows this morning. two were fid. sanfrancisco 31. oakland, 41. the only record we had was monterey at 34. that's cold. we had a freeze warning until 8:00 a.m. guess what. there will be another one at 1:00 a.m. until 8:00 a.m., along with a frost advisory. lows will be 32 to 22 tomorrow. it will be colder than what we had this morning. we'll use the breeze. we have clear skies. that's the good news. it's just not very warm. now, san francisco officially stayed at 41 degrees to tie a

record low but twin peaks this morning was 36. noc valley was 36. even the marina district was 42 degrees. the coldest anywhere i could find was st. helena and kenwood. they were 24. nov valley, 36. we do have at least clear skies but can we keep things cool friday and saturday? more on that coming up. people in the bay area are finding ditch ways to deal the cold weather. kraig debro joins us live from the oakland hills. >> good afternoon. we are a getting a little break from the cold. i mean a little break. it's still relatively cold up here. it's 51 degrees up here up in the oakland hills. now, the freeze warning in

effect for this morning, they will be back in just a couple of hours from now. if you take a look at highway 24 eastbound, just to give you a shot of the traffic here, the early holiday rush is already underway. that's a good thing. because for many people it's only as cold as your level of preparation. they wore beanies and ponchos and hoodies. others wore everything they could. you got like a sweatshirt and -- what do you got here? >> a coat, a sweater, a couple of t-shirts. try to keep warm. >> reporter: on a freeze morning, no one took anything that could -- took anything for granted. a formally homeless man says it's the kind of weather that

can kill. >> we're trying to not let people freeze. >> reporter: while some struggle to stay alive, others find the cold is an opportunity. we'll be changing his ignitor because it's burning out. but he gets paid to make sure furnaces work. in walnut creek, dedicated swimmers say they can make their own heat. the swimmers hit the 80-degree water when it was just 30- degrees outside the pool. >> i'm a little crazy to get up early when it's dark and to get out here when it's cold. >> reporter: now, the thanksgiving holiday weekend provides an opportunity for those people coming home from school, teaming up, visiting friends and family, it can be extremely cold at night. so the national weather service says the freeze warnings will be tonight and tomorrow. i wanted to share a shot of eastbound highway 24. just a few minutes ago, it was backed up. all the way down to broadway.

it may have been another problem besides the holiday traffic because the traffic is moving. it was at a standstill a while ago. i just wanded to give you a picture of that. it will be crowded on the freeways this afternoon. and it will be cold. back to you. >> thank you, kraig. if you are traveling up up to -- to the sierra, chains are in effect. ski resorts are reporting as much as eight feet of accumulating snow. aaa forecasts that nearly 5 million californians will hit the road this holiday weekend. that would represent 11% more travelers than last year. the woman says the increased --

says the increase is larger than last year. as a reminder, today starts the highway patrol's maximum enforcement period where they will be on the lookout for doctors. as part of that, there will be dui checkpoints set up all across the bay area as more drivers hit the road for the long thanksgiving weekend. the dui checkpoints begin today and will continue through sunday. the thanksgiving getaway is in full gear at local airports. there's plenty of crowds go going through security but have there been any problems with those opt-out protesters? claudine wong joins us live with more. >> reporter: good afternoon. yes, the travel rush is on here at oakland airport and at the other airports across the area. i want toe it show you the activity. this is the short-term parking lot.

it's filling you. the long-term parking, about 70% full. that parking to be completely full by tonight. sfo's was full by 5:00 a.m. this morning. as we get late in the day, travel experts say the stress level just grows. passengers say they are not -- they are not concerned about protesters. security is tight at all airports today and many security measures are done quietly. this is sfo's security communication center. what they call the only center of its kind? the world. here, the tsa and its contractors monitor the more than 1500 cameras watching the san francisco international airport. >> when they get off the freeway we are tracking their vehicles. we have to watch for suspicious vehicles. >> reporter: it's not the cameras getting the attention today. it's the security. body scanners and pat-downs are the subject of controversy from folks who say they are invasive

and infective and an example of the government going too far. we talk to travelers today who say they are more concerned about safety. >> i'm not worried about it. i have -- i've been screened. i've been screened -- i've been, as they say, groped for several years. >> i don't have a problem with it. to me, it's great. i feel much safer. >> reporter: officials -- protesters passed out fliers. they were asking pass yers to choose the pat-down because it takes more time and they wanted to to bring that to the attention of the tsa. >> i think -- some people just turn us down without knowing

the facts. >> reporter: on this day, people we talked to were single minded. they just wanted to get from point a. to point b.. >> today is not the way to address those concerns. >> reporter: it doesn't appear that this planned nationwide protest is actually happening as the organizers hoped. we have talked to all local airports and they are not seeing any protest-related problems, really just one or two, a few protesters at every airport, with signs. the important thing to remember on a day like this, is protesters or not, the airplanes and the airport, gonna be packed. back to you. >> thank you. b.a.r.t. is trying to provide a smooth, holiday getaway for passengers today, sunday, and monday.

groups that staged violent protests against tuition hikes a few weeks ago were demonstrating again today. there have been scuffles between police and protesters, authorities say two officers were injured and more than a dozen protesters arrested. several demonstrators also a -- van. terrifying moment the for a young couple who fought off a would-be carjacker to save their baby. surveillance cameras captured the incident. the couple stopped at a kansas city gas station and left the car oning -- rupping with their daughter inside. a man got in the car and sped off. the father managed to jump inside the car after the mother broke a window and was dragged several feet. >> my body took control. my brain did it. but it sometimes feels like it didn't happen except for the way i feel physically. >> the suspect crashed after being kicked in the head by the

father. the baby was unarmed -- unharmed. police are still searching for the suspect. the biggest farming district in california is pulling out of a massive plan to restore the sacramento/san joaquin river. the westland's water district is cardiacking -- is accusing the obama administration of putting too many restrictions and will not provide any funding without a guarantee of future water deliveries. that would be about 70% of historical averages. the district irrigate as much as 600,000 acres of farmland near fresno and provided $150 million for studies and planning. more than 100 coast guardsmen are enjoying a happy homecoming in alameda. the crew arrived at their home port. family members were anxiously

ready for the thanksgiving last- minute rush. there is a clerk -- there is a line two to three shopping carts deep. for clothing and electronics retailers, the day after thanksgiving is typically their biggest business day. but for grocery stores today is their black friday. >> definitely, it's the biggest day of the year. >> the vice president says this year shoppers seem to be more willing to splurge on a thanksgiving meal. she says their sales up are -- are up about 5% from a year ago. >> busier than this year than last year. i think people are to the point where, i'm tired of the doom and gloom. let's have a celebration. >> this woman said she couldn't decide who would make the turkey this year so they decided to double up. >> we couldn't let go of the

the shoppers don't mind. they still want to be first in line for black friday. this line started yesterday outside the best buy. shoppers are passing the time playing basketball, riding their skateboards and doing other sports. steve paulson said temperatures were in the upper 30s on the peninsula this morning. it's sunny outside but still chilly? >> that's right. there were a few areas in the upper 20s. i know woodside was in there and palo alto was done to about 31. frost advisory still posted for tonight. finally, somebody eeked out a 50. it's crystal clear, beautiful visibility out there. it's just temperatures, they are cold. baby, it's cold outside! it will be cold tonight in to tomorrow. freeze warning starts at 1:00 a.m. and goes until 8:00 a.m., very similar to what we had this morning. the wind will be less so it will be cooler. temperatures below 32 for

several hours. dry pattern that's for sure. if you are heading up to the mountains. it's okay now. it's really cold. traveling, things have calmed down a little bit. it's not very warm in the pacific northwest. they are still getting some off- and-on showers. snow has made it into north dakota south dakota, minnesota and into the great lakes. when you seen the green turning to pink that's snow. that may give you travel delays. here's san jose's 50. 48 san francisco which tied a record low. sanrafael, 48. oakland airport which also tied a record low this morning of 34. now, 49. concord/livermore. 48. palo alto 49. it is 9 in tahoe. they were 9 below this morning for a record low and truckee was 9 below. it's only 22 in reno. 48 ukiah. they were down to 28.

taking a live look at the big board on wall street, stocks after two days of losses are doing well today. that certainly bodes well for the holiday shopping season, the period that traditionally kicks off black friday. right now, the dow is up 154 at 11,191. the nasdaq is also up nearly 2%, up 48. and the s&p is up 17. one of the big reasons the markets are up, there was unexpectedly good news from the labor department. the number of people filing new unemployment claims dropped to 400,000. that's the lowest level since july 2008 and down 34,000 from

the week below. continuing claims also fell 142,000 to 4.18 million. on the other hand, the commerce department this morning released a new set of grim numbers on home sales. the latest sales show the sales of -- figures show the sales of new homes dropped 1.8% from the year before and 28% from the year before. the median price fell to 195,000 and that's the lowest level since october of 2003. this morning, president obama gave two turkeys a reprieve from the thanksgiving table. the turkeys receiving a presidential pardon this year were ez raised on a -- were raised on a foster farm ranch near modesto. the turkey aname, amle. the-- apple. the alternate, cider. the president said it felt good to stop at least one
