jose northbound making your way towards 17 no delays. along the east shore freeway we had an earlier accident but everything is looking good right now. 6:01. tori, kraig. thank you, tara. this morning some big stores are getting a head start on black friday. this is the first time this has ever happened. ktvu's claudine wong is checking out malls across the bay area. she joins us now live from pleasant hill. little activity behind you, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes. we were inside the k mart here in pleasant hill. that is the manager here opening the door for the first shoppers to come in here looking for their deals. we've talked to shoppers first in line this morning. big surprise they are looking for electronics. look. he's getting the directions to go back straight to where they want to go. the people we've talk today in line this morning say you know this is a tradition for them. k mart is open every thanksgiving and they come out here to make sure they can get the best deals. we talked to one woman who says by the time today and tomorrow is finished for her so is her

christmas shopping list. so she is very efficient as she comes through here. so we've got a steady stream of people coming in. it is a little bit different from that black friday push through the doors that we see often at best buy and the electronic store. certainly in the last half hour since we've been here we've seen the crowd continue to grow and this line continues to stretch. does look like everyone's going to the same place. you guessed it. it's electronics. couple tvs and gps. said those are their big sellers. looks like everyone's going in the same direction. >> yes. they're all going to electronics. those are the big ticket items. >> reporter: how fast do those sell out? >> generally depending on stock they're the first things to go. >> reporter: so these are the people who are going to be the winners and that little dog who i'm sure is looking for some great thanksgiving deal. so, yes, this thanksgiving a little bit different. they have a couple more stores opening. sears opening for the first time this thanksgiving day. this store is always open.

and then we have a couple more. wal-mart is also open. people who are before waiting for their thanksgiving dinner are coming here looking for that great deal. we'll talk to people and check back with you coming up later on in the morning news. live in pleasant hill, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. tens of thousands of needy people will be fed today by local charities and volunteers. ktvu channel 2 reporter jade hernandez live at the salvation army headquarters in san francisco. happy thanksgiving, jade. >> reporter: happy thanksgiving to you, kraig. when you have family and friends around for thanksgiving, having some sort of dinner is always a given. that's not always the case for many residents here in san francisco. we're live at the salvation army harbor lights center. every year these residents give back to the community. and they do so by cooking these meals. they cook nearly 5,000 meals for shutins and seniors without family nearby. the deliveries will begin in a few hours but there are a few last minute preps which need to be taken care of. you're looking at this live right here in san francisco.

you might be wondering what it takes to put on this event every year in order to keep the thanksgiving meal delivery program going it first of all takes a lot of food. look at that. green beans, lots of cooking going on still here this morning. more than 150 turkeys and of course all the regular fixings, stuffing, potatoes and cranberry sauce. turkeys donated by the california state and private donations. they were cooked right here in the harbor lights kitchen. joining us this morning is major from salvation army. thank you for joining us. yesterday they were carving the turkeys. talk a little about that event. >> they were. it was really exciting. we have officers from the police department and fire department and other service agencies who come in. it is a bit of a competition to see who can do the best carving. but it's pretty exciting seeing all the meat coming off the turkeys knowing it's going to be ready to go for today. >> reporter: it's nice to know there are so many volunteers

and donations that have come in. but there's still need this morning. >> there is. we are very much in need of drivers this morning. we've got a lot of volunteers already in place to help us put the packages together. but all that has to be hand delivered and that happens by getting it in the vehicles for drivers to take it out. >> reporter: okay. people have a couple of options if they have free time this morning they can stop by at ninth and harrison which is this harbor lights center or call the volunteer coordinator at 415-238-5405. and one of the other things that we were talking about earlier before the live shot took place is the fact that you can now donate and it's easy as texting. >> that's right. we've got to keep up with the times. so the salvation army this year has set up its own text to give program. the text information is give to gssa which is for the golden state salvation army. text that to 85944. that will give us a $10

donation. >> reporter: absolutely so simple this morning as a $10 donation. you were taking a look at a little message there. a text at 85944. it's as easy as writing that message give to gssa. thank you major for joining us this morning. and we are live. as you can tell, there's still a lot to be done this morning. this is a very calculated operation. we're talking about these deliveries. more than 5,000 meals delivered in an hour and a half. and you can still be part of that if you'd like to spend your time come down here to ninth and harrison. more on this coming up. live in san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, jade. some homeless shelters in the south bay opening early because of the cold weather. santa clara county declare add state of emergency because of freezing temperatures. the reception center in san jose has set up 125 emergency shelter beds. and is opening early this year. the shelter usually opens on the monday after thanksgiving. beds will be awarded on a

lottery basis. >> when everybody else is sleeping, we're out there riding the 22 in the cold. >> reporter: 22 being a bus liner. >> right. and i'm not the only one that does it. the whole bus is full of homeless people trying to get in out of the cold. so with this opening up today it's a big help. >> there are an estimated 7,000 homeless people in santa clara county. the national guard armory in gill roy and sunny vale also opening their doors during this cold weather. they're operating from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every day through the end of march. the armory in gill roy at 940 when avenue. tomorrow's the traditional start of the holiday shopping season. but many local grocery stores were packed with shoppers yesterday on black wednesday. they say the day before thanksgiving is one of their busiest days of the year. and while there are many

shoppers out, those shoppers say they're watching how much they spend. the american farm bureau federation says the price of a classic thanksgiving meal costs 56 cents more than last year. most shoppers say even though their financial situation has not improved, there's still plenty to be thankful for. >> we made less money and therefore less came in. but, no, i feel very thankful. we're in much better shape than i know a lot of friends, family members. >> the first time knob hill food stores will be open today but closing early, 3:00 p.m. 6:09. aaa estimates 4.7 million californians will hit the highway during this long holiday weekend. there will also be plenty of officers patrolling area highways. they'll watch out for anyone who gets behind the wheel after having too much to drink. the chp will team up with many local police departments and setting up drunk driving check points. >> those that show signs of impairment will be screened

in southern california. these are the coldest highs ever observed for the date. bear lake only 33. ocean side harbor and new port beach only 58. if you're heading to southern california, it's even cool for them down there. for us it's going to be a sunny day just it's cold out there. but that system coming in will be here saturday for rain. stays very cool after the freeze warning takes us until 8:00 a.m. 50s on your temps. not much of a change from yesterday. just the days are so short. cold friday morning. then few high clouds make their way in. rain comes in saturday, clears out saturday night. sunday breezy and cool. monday sunny but cool. he was once one of the most powerful people on capitol hill. now he faces the possibility of life behind bars.

it is 6:15. a thanksgiving tradition is now underway. julie chen joins us live from new york along the parade route for the 84th macy's thanksgiving day parade. good morning. >> reporter: happy thanksgiving tori and kraig. it's the 84th macy's thanksgiving day parade. you know the saying don't forget to wear a flower in your hair? i upped the ante on that. we have pots of flowers. yeah.

[ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: okay. it really takes a real man to dawn a bee suit like this. how tall are you, sir? >> i'm 6'7" and a half. and i wear high heel sneakers. >> reporter: lucky for you today you actually seem average in size because we've got giant helium balloons passing us by. look at that. here's pick key mouse making his way down. there are a total of 15 giant helium balloons this year. two of them brand new. they're going to have the wimp kid as well as kung fu panda. you're seeing the giant ones now but they have 42 of the smaller novelty balloons. you're seeing the statue of liberty float by. we're going to get out of the way so san francisco folks can see more of the parade. happy thanksgiving to you. all right. now we've got a marching band coming through. this is just one of the 12 marching bands who have been practicing the last year and a half for this moment. very excited. overall 1600 performers in this

parade. and 800 of them clowns to make everybody very, very happy. all right. let's talk to one of you guys. why did you decide to walk in the parade this year? >> i thought it would be an experience of a lifetime. something i would be able to remember forever. what a great way to celebrate a special holiday. >> reporter: there are 3.5 million people out here live and more than 50 million people watching from home. does that make you nervous? >> no. i'm so excited. this is so much fun. the energy's amazing. we've been up since 4:00. it's been so much fun. we're really excited to march. >> reporter: this is the epitome of how americans spend thanksgiving day right? this parade. all right. guys, san francisco, it's very loud here, but we don't mind it because it's very electric. and we are feeling very grateful this morning on thanksgiving day. back to you from new york. >> just a question. you look like you're bundled up a little bit. is it pretty cold out there?

>> reporter: it's 39 degrees. it's not that bad. we've had it worse out here for the parade. we're just thankful that the rain is holding off. apparently it's supposed to hold off until the very tail end of the parade that ends here at noon eastern time. >> and ends with santa claus right? >> >> reporter: yeah. you know who i saw earlier this morning we saw jessica simpson, gladys knight. they'll be performing. and the rumor right now is green day may make a surprise appearance because the broadway cast of american idiot is performing. i'm keeping my eyes peeled for a green day band to show up. >> they're from the bay area. it will be exciting for them to be there. thank. joining us live from new york city. appreciate it. time right now 6:19. former house majority leader could spend the rest of his life behind bars. yesterday a jury in texas convicted him on charges he illegally funneled corporate money to political candidates in 2002. prosecutors say the money

laundering conviction proved no one is above the law. delay says he is innocent and plans to appeal. the former republican leader was once one of the most powerful and feared members of congress. the last undecided congressional contest in california is all but over. it appears democratic representative jerry mcnerney has won his re-election bid against republican challenger david harmer. the latest numbers show mcnerney with 2400 more votes than harmer. and the associated press reports there are fewer than 1900 votes left to be counted. even so, harmer has not conceded. the secretary of state is not expected to certify the results until tuesday. if mcnerney is the winner, that would mean no california congressional seat changed party hands in the election earlier this month. a holiday tradition continues in san jose this morning. it's the annual silicon valley turkey trot which begins at san jose's guadeloupe river park

nearly 15,000 people are expected to participate in this year's event which benefits three local charities. the silicon valley technology company applied materials is the sponsor. it will be both 5k and 10k runs featuring world class athletes as well as celebrity ceos and government officials. tomorrow ktvu kicks off its annual holiday coat drive. it's called one warm coat. ktvu personalities will be at four bay area locations to take your donations. san francisco's ferry building, broadway plaza in walnut creek, bay street in emeryville and san anna row in san jose are the four locations. they'll be out there until 6:00 p.m. we hope you can stop by and drop off a coat. >> people certainly need warm coats during this chilly weather. let's check in again with tara to see if there are any kind of hot spots on the roads this early thanksgiving morning. >> good morning. everything looking pretty good at this hour. we want to look at our maps and show you a couple hot spots we have going on. highway 13 between 24 and 80 a little bit slow going. and 880 northbound right before

you get to macarthur maze a little slow as well. 19th avenue slow going through san francisco. that's normal for this time of the morning and also 35 miles per hour usually those speeds will show red any way. so not really a big deal. 880 near the oakland coliseum traffic is flowing well in both directions at this hour. and finally down in the south bay 101 near san jose still looks a bit dark out there but traffic as you can see is flowing nicely. traffic on the right hand side is supposed to be folks headed towards the airport. a lot of folks have maybe already left and caught their plane or leaving later today. 6:22. let's head over to steve. tara, thank you. we have a freeze warning out. temperatures slightly cooler yesterday, colder, than this morning. there's a bit of a breeze south, southeast for some. boulder creek still the coldest from anyone i can find 24. kenwood 28. lafayette 29. saratoga holding steady at 30.

it is 6:26. many skiers and snow boarders heading up to the sierra on this thanksgiving day and expect a slow drive to the lake tahoe area. right now no chain requirements on interstate 80 and highway 50, but it is really cold. steve told us it's minus 9 degrees right now. heavy snow has been falling for the past couple days. traffic on the mountain highway has been very slow. we talked to one frustrated truck driver yesterday. >> it's been like this all day long. >> we've been here for about an hour stopped. >> those who do make it up to the snow can enjoy some amazing skiing and snow boarding. resort owners say the biggest november storm in years has created a great start to the season. two young marines have a special reason to be thankful this thanksgiving. it was a hero's welcome for corporal thomas brooke and

lance corporal jake henry just back from the war zone in afghanistan. the warm reception at the oakland airport followed by an escort to walnut creek behind 56 harley davidsons. a party soon followed which seemed a bit of a culture shock for the two marines. >> 20 days ago i was in afghanistan. i've been thrown back into america. it's a little different adapting to everything. but i'll have my friends and family around me. that should help a lot. >> i can't imagine anything more special. it's just unreal. >> jake who was wounded is from wyoming but is spending this thanksgiving with his buddy's family who have now become his second family. they'll be joined by four more marines later today for thanksgiving dinner. the thanksgiving holiday got off to a shaky start in the south bay. the earth moved overnight. a warm bed and a hot breakfast. we'll explain why shelters like this one in the south bay had to open days ahead of schedule. plus what the health department wants you to know

good morning. happy thanksgiving. thanks for joining us on ktvu channel 2 morning news. i'm kraig debro. >> good morning. happy thanksgiving. i'm tori campbell. pam and dave have the day off. it's now 6:30. some shelters in the south bay are trying to make sure everyone has a warm place to spend thanksgiving. ktvu's in san jose where one shelter has opened its doors early. good morning and happy thanksgiving, ally. >> reporter: we're inside the reception center shelter in san jose where you can see there are about 30 volunteers who have been here since 4:00 this morning. they're fixing breakfast for the 180 people who spent the night in this emergency shelter. this shelter and another santa clara county shelter at the gill roy armory had to open five days early. five days ahead of schedule

because of the freezing temperatures and bitter cold. right now paul charleston the meal supervisor with ehd life builder shelter. paul, tell us how surprised were you that this shelter and everything had to open early? >> i was not at all surprised. the weather's been pretty cold. absolutely had to open early. >> reporter: what was the reaction of everyone as you opened the door. >> when the weather turns bad everyone comes and lines up out front hoping they can get in. sometimes unfortunately when we reach our limit we have to send some people to the armories. but everybody gets in. >> reporter: was there an overflow crowd last night? were some people turned away yesterday? >> no.

they didn't turn anyone away last night. >> reporter: how great is the need right now you think? >> the need is really great because you can feel that breeze out there. it's so cold they can't make it out there at night. >> reporter: do you see a lot of new faces you haven't seen before? >> yes. every year i see now faces. so many new people here now. a lot of people have lost their homes, lost their jobs or whatever. they've all come here. >> reporter: thank you for talking with us this morning. as you just heard there are volunteers serving breakfast to about 180 people who spent the night here. according to census data there are about 7,000 people in santa clara county who are homeless. at any given time there are only about 1,000 beds available. some officials say that i have to offer bed space on a lottery basis. live in san jose, ktvu channel 2 news. 6:33. several bay area charities will see tens of thousands of people

today. religious leaders of all faiths blessed a bounty at st. anthony's in san francisco yesterday morning. st. anthony says it's seen a 5% increase in need this year. they expect to serve about 4,000 people today. yesterday people continued to drop off turkeys, canned food and clothes at the headquarters on golden gate avenue. >> it's been a lifesaver for us. it's the time of year when we most need donations. so it's a way for people very generous san franciscans to come out and make a donation. we try to make it as easy as we can. >> the curb side donation drop off will also be open today. st. anthony's says they have enough turkeys but need more used clothing. hundreds of san francisco volunteers will help deliver almost 5,000 meals to people who can't leave their homes because of age or illness this morning. the salvation army yesterday held its annual turkey carve off in conjunction with their annual delivery of thanksgiving meals today. the event is held at the city's harbor lights center.

the competition pitted police, firefighters, coast guard officials and navy sailors against each other to see who could carve the most turkeys. ended up carving 150 turkeys which will be delivered in those meals today. this thanksgiving president obama is calling on americans to help make tomorrow better. >> this is not the hardest thanksgiving america's ever faced. but as long as many members of our american family are hurts, we've got to look out for one another. >> in his weekly address the president says we need to support those serving overseas and keep the economy moving forward. on tuesday the president will meet with congressional leaders from both parties. he says the two parties need to work together to make progress on the issues. 6:35. it has been one year since the hayward father shot and killed while taking his daughter to get ice cream. police say they know who did it but they need someone to step forward and help them make their case. a candle light vigil held last night to remember the 38-year- old.

he was killed near b and vermont streets where a memorial now sits. cunningham was walking his two dogs with his 13-year-old daughter when one of the dogs sniffed the leg of a man walking by. the man got upset, pulled a gun and shot cunningham several times in the chest. cunningham's daughter saw the whole thing. because the killer is still out there, we're not showing her face. >> i don't know how someone could kill someone over something so stupid and small. and i just don't know what the world's coming to anymore. we miss him so much. >> hayward police say they need a witness to come forward to solidify their case. they also need to process several people they believe knowingly or unknowingly assisted the suspect. there is a $27,000 reward for information leading to a conviction. san francisco district attorney, harris, appears to have won the race for california attorney general. but she's not declaring victory

just yet. her rival republican conceded, but the final results won't be released until next tuesday. so harris wants to wait until every vote is counted before she declares victory. the latest count however shows harris with a 58,000 vote lead. coolly campaign says there's simply not enough votes left for him to win. harris' victory throws yet another curve ball into who will fill san francisco's top offices. mayor gavin new? is responsible for appointing but he's also heading to sacramento to become lieutenant governor. chew says he's not sure whether he'd appoint for interim d.a. or vie for the job himself. >> i'm 100% focused on ensuring an orderly transition of leadership. >> the board of supervisors has the authority to appoint an interim mayor until a permanent one is elected next november, but the board itself is set to

change on january 8th with four new members. 6:37. a 3-point magnitude quake struck last night. centered about 12 miles east- southeast of san jose city hall. the u.s. gs reports a 2.2 aftershock also struck the area just after 11:30. no reports of any damage or injury. there is a reminder this morning from the california department of public health as you rush around and put your thanksgiving dinner on the table, take time to clean up and be sure to cook your turkey early. the health department says salmonella and e. coli are blamed each year for making hundreds of people sick during the holidays. officials want to remind those in the kitchen to keep tools used on raw foods away from foods that are already cooked. >> cross contamination can come from using utensils, cutting boards, spoons and knives from a raw product to a cooked

product by not properly washing utensils between after using them with soap and water. >> the department of health also says to be safe turkey and other poultry should be heeded to an internal temperature of 165 degrees. my husband just asked me if we had a meat thermometer at home. i hope we do. >> there might be something open you'd be able to get one. >> uh-huh. 6:39. let's go to tara. highway 4 and the toll plaza. >> that's right. chp is expected to be out. so remember not to drink and drive this thanksgiving day holiday. at first we are going to take a live look here at highway 4 through bay point. you can see traffic is extremely light right now. and up next we have a look at the bay bridge toll plaza where you can see same story not a lot of folks out there on the roadway making their way into the city. finally 680 at the grade same sort of story. little more folks out there driving but not too bad. 6:39. here's steve.

33 san raphael and napa. oakland made it to 34. that was a record. they have since warmed up. concord pleasanton 31. palo alto 30. san jose at 33. the location, the record temperature low and the year it was set. san jose 26 in 1895. won't happen today. san francisco 42 in 1892. so we're two degrees off from tieing a record. santa rosa 27 in 1952. i don't think so. oakland airport they were 36 in 1956. again they made it to 34. that is a record for the airport. kentfield will be close. napa i don't think so just a hint of a breeze as well. 28 in 1993 is the old record. it's 9 below in a tahoe. it was 17 below in truck key. they're not only 13 below. these are undoubtedly some records. 28 sacramento. 34 fresno. 44 palm springs. 34 las vegas. very cold readings in southern california. these were yesterday's record

boarders heading up to the sierra today can expect a slow drive to the tahoe area. right now there are no chain requirements on interstate 80 or highway 50, but heavy snow has been falling for the past several days. and former house majority leader tom delay could spend the rest of his life behind bars. yesterday a jury in texas convicted delay on charges he illegally funneled corporate money to political candidates in 2002. south korea's defense minister has resigned two days after north korea launched artillery shells at the south killing four people. it comes as the u.s. air carrier george washington heads to korean waters to participate in what the white house says were long planned joint military exercises with south korea. more than 28,000 u.s. troops are currently stationed there. south korea's defense minister is reportedly resigning over criticism his military's response was too slow. his replacement is expected to be announced some time tomorrow. just two weeks after ktvu's

special report on synthetic marijuana products, the federal government is making it illegal to possess those items. as we told you synthetic pot is made by spraying herbs with chemicals that mimic the active ingredient in marijuana. the items then sold as incense but people smoke the products to get high. the drug enforcement agency's new rules are scheduled to take effect at the end of december and remain in place for at least a year. this is the time of year many people get sick or possibly worse when they mistake a poisonous mushroom for an edible one. but a new treatment is being tested at a santa cruz hospital. the western center for a new u.s. study. they are testing a european drug that has already saved more than a dozen lives in the last three years. >> the aggressive hydration in the medication is something that can be -- that's applicable to any community

hospital setting. >> the pharmacy has a stockpile of the drug which is available in hours to any hospital in the u.s. but experts say mushroom hunters still need to be careful because the poison works so quickly. experienced mushroomers say if you're in doubt, throw it out. oakland mayor-elect quan says she's paid all of her parking tickets after having her car booted outside city hall. she had to pay about $1,000 to get the boot off her car. she accumulated more than 10 parking tickets. she says she may have overlooked the tickets during her busy campaign for mayor. the engineers at california high speed rail authority construction on the line begin in the central valley city. the line then goes south. it's a 65-mile section that would cost an estimated $4 billion. allows the state to meet federal requirements. the rail authority's board of directors will consider the recommendation next week. time now 6:48.

today after the florida based airline's tickets system crashed yesterday leaving thousands of passengers delayed at airports around the country. that meant passengers could not check in online or at airport kiosks and boarding passes had to be written by hand on one of the busiest travel days of the year. several of their flights had to be delayed but no cancellations. all right. time now 6:51. pat down controversy is taking a new turn. this one involves peta at america's biggest airports. swimmers have a chance to help a good cause just by getting their morning exercise today. no traffic to report at the golden gate bridge. we will have more coming up in traffic.

peta to place ads that poke fun at airport full body scanners is meeting some resistance. peta wants to place ads showing a scan of a scantily clad woman with a message that says be proud of your body, scan, go vegan. major airports are refusing to display the ads during the holiday season as they did the first time peta tried. if you want to burn off calories, you can also help a good cause this morning. the hayward plunge holding annual turkey swim starting at

8:00 and running until 11:00 a.m. there's a minimum $4 donation request to participate in this morning's lap swim. all the money raised goes to the karen m. gordon scholarship fund. she was an intern here at ktvu who who was killed by a drunk driver on her 19th birthday. she was a life guard and swimming instructor at the hayward plunge as well as a freshman honor student and water polo player at what is now cal strait east bay. may seem like a nice idea to light a fire and stay cozy this thanksgiving. but air quality officials are saying please don't. they're hoping you will present the need from a winter spare the air alert tomorrow because friday's forecast may leave indications of trapped smoke near the ground may result in unhealthy breathing air. there's another holiday tradition many east bay residents take part in. >> hi, buddy. oh, wow. look at this.
