7:00. some big stores are getting a head start on black friday. claudine wong is checking malls across the bay area. she's joining us at the location where sears just evened its -- just opened its doors. >> that's right. actually, if you look other her, you can see people still streaming in. looking to get that must-have deal today. this is a first for sears. first time that they opened on thanksgiving day. certainly hoping to get -- take advantage of the people looking for a deal. tell me about opening on thanksgiving day. can why the decision to open today? >> we're always looking for ways to meet our customers' needs. they've been telling us for years they've wanted to open on

beds are awarded on a lottery basis. when everybody is out there sleeping, we're out there running the 22 in the cold. >> 22 being the bus line? >> yes. >> i'm not the only one that -- only one that does that. the whole bus does. so with this opening up today, it's a big help. >> and the mercury is reporting that a glitch is threatening to keep the facilities closed. the national guard facility also open tonight, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. every nye -- every night. in san francisco, right now, hundreds of volunteers are gearing up to deliver nearly 5,000 meals to people who cannot leave their homes because of age or illness. people have been up since early this morning preparing those meals. more than 150 turkeys were carved for the dinners which

rain developing, clearing breezy on sunday. a holiday tradition continues in san jose this morning. it's the annual silicon valley turkey trot which begins at guadalupe river park. nearly 15,000 people were expected to participate which benefits three different agencies. there will be 5-k and 10-k rubs featuring world-class athletes and government officials. 7:11. even though yesterday was the travel -- was the busiest travel day, there's still some that left this until the last minute. we'll clerk in on in a minute. >> reporter: the controversy about the tough, new securitying interest in a trusted traveler program.

snooze 37 in oaklands. clear skies. a lot of 30s. it will be sunny today but highs only in the upper 20s. here's kraig. homeland security officials are proposing upgrade to the color-coated terrorist threat levels that would pro -- that would provide warnings that are more specific. the current system has not changed in four years. the new system would be based on heightened public awareness that could be raised to

elevated or imminent with specific information about the threat. the decision is expected in a few minutes. spirit airlines says all of the operations are back to normal today. that's after the florida-based airlines computer program crashed. passengers couldn't check in and boarding passes had to be written by hand on one of the busiest travel days of the year. several flights were delayed but there were no cancellations. there are still some people flying today. this is how it looked at san francisco international airport earlier this morning where you can still see some there is -- there's still some people there. most travelers we talked to said flying today was cheaper undate wanted to avoid the big -- was cheaper and wanted to

pressure to stop treating everyone like a high risk. alison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. tom delay 0 could spend the rest of his life behind bars. yesterday, he was convicted on charges he illegally funneled corporate candidates to political candidates in 2002. prosecutors say this proves no one is above the law. delay says he's innocent and plans to appeal. the music company founded by hall of famer jerry rice and his wife has been sued in superior court over unpaid legal fees. the law firm claims the rices failed to pay more than $28,000 in legal fees. at this point, there's no word on specifics of this legal action. the case is still being filed in marin special court. two marines have a special

any computer was tied for second place. the nintendo partiable gaming system came in third. smart phones and sony playstations were also in the top ten. the last undie sided congressional contest in california is all but over. and it now appears that jerry mcnerney has won. the latest number show mcnerney with 200 more votes -- 2400 more votes. san francisco district attorney, kamala harris appears to have won the race for california attorney general. she's not declaring victory just yet. her rival, steve cooley, conceded about, but the final routes won't be released until

next tuesday. so harris says she'll wait until every vote is counted. mayor newsom is responsible for appointing harris's successor but he will be leaving for his new office on january 3rd. david chu would be the interim mayor but he's not sure if he would appoint an interim d.a. or do that job himself. the board of supervisors has the authority to appoint an interim mayor until a permanent one is elect the next november but the board itself is set too change on january 8th with four new members. a magnitude 3.2 earthquake

struck santa clara county last night. but with no new aftershocks to report. the quake was centered about 12 miles east-southeast of san jose city hall. the usgs says a 2.2 aftershock struck the area after the first one hit. there have been no reports of aftershocks. many skiers and snowboarders are already heading up to tahoe. they can expect a slow drive. right now no chain requirements on 80 or 50. but heavy snow has been falling for the past several days. and traffic snow. we talked to one frustrated truck driver near blue canyon yesterday. >> it's been like this all day long. >> we've been here for -- about an hour. >> those who make it up to the snow will enjoy great skiing

your body scan. go vegan." oakland mayor-elect jean kwon says she's paid off all of her parking tickets after having her car booted right outside of city hall. kwon had to pay about $1,000 to get the boot off her car. just two weeks after ktvu's report on synthetic marijuana products, the federal government is making it illegal to possess those items. synthetic pot is made by spraying pot with chemicals that mimic the active ingredient in marijuana. people smoke the products to get high. the drug enforcement agency's rules are scheduled to take effect in december and remain in place for at least a year. this is the time of year that many people get sick or possibly worse, when they

the city of palo alto is deciding when to discipline a contractor who trimmed trees without notifying officials. the trees were pruned on california avenue this week. it's the same bluff where dozens of trees were cut down last year without notice which upset some residents and business owners. the contract trimmed the trees to remove eye-level branches. vacaville police arrested two men in connection with copper wire theft. they found two men hiding in bushes near a solar panel. after inspecting the area, they found evidence that the suspects had pulled several hundred feet of copper wire from the field and damaged some

dressed warmly. but there are also some people who are wearing costumes. this race also includes a costume contest at the he -- at the end of the event. i don't see anyone with costumes but we did see many people wearing turkey hats and turkey and pilgrim costumes. there are some very dedicated people that -- here this morning. we asked some of them why we decided to be here. >> i'm out here and i want people to know that even though i'm seven months pregnant, they can exercise. i've been exercising my whole pregnancy. it doesn't matter. anybody can do it. everybody can do it. >> family getting together on turkey day starting with a good race, build up an appetite and go home and eat. >> reporter: now, for some people they've been doing this for the past six years. so this has become a family tradition. others we talked to said i just wanted to burn a few extra calories before i had my thanksgiving meal. there is a 5-k run or walk.

inspirational woman. she uft used to stand in that line in front of the glide memorial church. today she volunteered. >> i was homeless before. not helpless but homeless. not by choice of i was in a very bad situation. the economy. just like the economy is bad now. so i'm here to participate and congratulate anyone who makes a difference. >> reporter: glide church serves more than 5,000 meals today. and add in the food donations and the volunteers, and you have a great event. the dinner begins in about an hour and lasts until 2:00. it includes turkey, ham and all of the regular fixings. we wanted to show you volunteers at work. many who arrived bright andley around 6:00. there is a -- bright and early, around 6:00. there is a real need for this.

in august, alone, 91,000 people showed up for meals, and that's a traditionally slow month. overall, 300,000 meals -- more meals have been served this year. we spoke with cecil williams, who started this, as a potluck dinner. he's seeing the needs grow. >> we've seen more unemployed people in our lives. we've seen more family in our lives. there is a growth of people who don't have -- they've lost everything, home, cars, jobs, it's really a crisis situation. >> reporter: we're back out live and we are joined by teddy. teddy. you used to stand in that line? >> yes, i did. i stood in that line for years. as a matter of fact i didn't know about the line. one day i was so hungry, starving.

you can make it at the church. jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, jade. spirit airlines says its operations are now back to normal today. that is after the florida-based airlines ticket computer -- ticketing computer system crashed yesterday. leaving thousands of passengers delayed at airports across the country. that meant passengers couldn't check in online or at the kiosks and the boarding passes had to be written by hand. spirit says several flights had to be delayed but there were no cancellations. yesterday was the biggest travel day, there are still people flying today. this is how it looked at san francisco international airport earlier this morning where you can see there is a good amount of people at the airport today. most travelers we talked to said flying today was cheaper and you could avoid the crowds. >> we ficked the traffic would be less thanksgiving morning

attorney dam ma law harris appears to have won the race for california attorney general but she won't declare a victory just yet. her rival conceded, but the final results will not be finished until next tuesday. the latest count shows harris with a 58,000-vote lead. the dooley -- the cooley campaign says there's just not enough votes to win. mayor newsom is responsible for appointing her successor but he's also going to be the lieutenant-governor. if newsom leaves without a successor, david chu will become interim mayor. but chu says he's not sure whether he would appoint an interim d.a. or vie for the job himself. >> i'm 100% focused as president of the board of supervisors on ensuring an

right places. residents. >> reporter: this is really important and this is important to you because of what? >> with it's incredibly important because we serve about 1600 clients a day. 1200 of them have no place to go on thanksgiving. for me, i think for us to go out says you matter and we care about you. so reducing isolation as well as you knew trish today. >> reporter: what else does meals on wheels immediate today and -- christmas is coming up and charities are looking for donation. >> we're always making sure that people are fed and looked after in the right way. but we're running a special holiday gift bag, a program where we'll get every meals on wheels senior, a pair of socks, a meal in a bag. so they know people are thinking of them. so people can do that or they

walnut creek police have investigating an armed robbery at a diner that happened around 1:00 this morning at the black bear diner on bancroft road in walnut creek. two employees were inside at the time. one of them was hit in the face during the robbery. police are looking for three suspectsle one had a 12-inch knife. another had a bat. they got away with about $600. members of the lesbian and gay community are outraged about the application that invites users to take a stand against gay marriage by taking -- by signing a declaration. it also asks users if they support these relationsships and in if the users answer yes, they are told they answered incorrectly. they want apple to remove this. a lot of people are getting the jib jab treatment so we
