closer. starting to move into sonoma county. now here is tara. thanks, steve. here's a look at 880. you can see that traffic is flowing pretty well this day after thanksgiving. up next we have a look at 280 and san jose where traffic is looking pretty good. let's head back to the desk. we begin with the super bowl of shopping. black friday and many stores are doing booming business. christian is in san francisco. >> reporter: booming business indeed. you can see the crowds of people here and the best buy employees are trying to manage this crowd and get everybody in line and out of the store in an efficient manner as possible. it has been a lot of work out here. keep in mind, it's still early in the morning. it's just about 6:00 right now. it's pretty early in the morning.

we have video from inside the store. just to show you how dee the crowds are. you can see that are tons of people here. the doors opened up just before 5:00 this morning president lines were down to the end of the building. around the corner and halfway down the block. there were isolated reports of pushing an shoving but nothing serious. that mostly happen cut in line. that could cause fray nerves. the reason for all of this the big door buster deals. deals like a nintendo wii for $400. coming out live we can show you what kind of deals folks are getting here. we can show you three tvs moving up here. what did you buy this morning? >> i buy two big tv 46-inch with the wii and six camera

the store opened at 10:00 p.m. last night. the crowd was so big the store called the police to help monitor the situation. there was no reports of incidents. shoppers are glad more stores opened their doors earlier this year. >> i think it's a good time to come out and get a deal. we are pretty excited about it. >> are you excited? >> yeah. >> reporter: trying to save some money? >> yeah. >> reporter: do you know what you want to buy in there? >> a lot of stuff. >> the old navy on bay street is back open this morning after a pretty short turn around. the store reopened at midnight after being opened for the day yesterday. bart has a safety message for its riders. ktvu jade hernandez is at walnut creek bart station to explain that. jade. >> reporter: good morning.

bart is accommodating their shoppers as best as they can. they are making sure the trains are as long as possible. and bart police are warning shoppers how to stay safe. they will be here greeting riders, and answering questions, and sharing safety tips. this is the reason why. shoppers are loading up on goodies and they will be traveling with their purchase. the first shoppers to the door started forming lines at midnight. the big ticket item there is an lc consideration tv. the doors opened earlier at kohls. retailers offer the incentives to entice shoppers inside. the great ball in milpitas opened at midnight. we were there to see shoppers there packed in wall to wall each was hoping for a variety

francisco are looking for the gunman responsible for a deadly shooting that happened in the city's japantown neighborhood just before 9:00 last night. a gunman shot and killed a young woman in her 20s. officers found her body outside of a apartment house. it is still not clear what lead up to that deadly gun tire. three hours later san francisco police responded to another city. this happened in the mission district. investigators say one person was wounded in the gunfire on the 1,000 block on hamster street. that victim is expected to survive. this is a maximum enforcement weekend for the highway patrol and officers will be out tonight looking for dangerous drivers. chp says so far drunk driving arrests are down in the bay area. there were 45 arrests between wednesday night and yesterday morning. across the state 289 drivers were arrested. that is up from 271 in the same period a year ago. in the 12 hour reporting span

there were no threats or fatalities. an alleged drunk driver struck a police officer. it's believed he did it while trying to avoid a dui check point. police say the man back the up ahead of the check point and hit the officer. officer sweeney suffer the sprains and bruises in the accident. the driver rodriguez is in jail and being held in lieu of $50,000 bond. 6:07. let's head out to they're who is watching the -- let's head out to tara who is watching the traffic. >> it seems most of the traffic these days is happening in the parking lots in various shopping malls. right now we will take a live look from news chopper two. this is the macy's parking lot. you can see folks already starting to grab their spots and head in for deals. this is pretty much the same story at every mall we have seen from foster city to hayward and down here into the

some of the records from yesterday south lake tahoe was seven below. that broke the old record at two. stock ton 20 was a record. sacramento 30 tied the old mark going back to 1880. oakland airport 32 was a new record. san francisco's 42 also tied 42 last set in 1892. it's been a long time since we've had that many cold readings. 50s today. after a mostly sunny da partly cloudy later on. 30s and 40s right now. still two below in tahoe. 30 in ukiah with the clouds. we'll start to bring in rain in early saturday to the north maybe sooner. this will all swing in giving everybody rain on saturday. cold morning. sun then to the

this morning the parents of san jose marine is on the way to retrieve their son's body. he was killed tuesday during a come bat operation. he post the this photo on his facebook page. he was based at camp pend l ton. united states is now been in afghanistan for nine years and 50 days. that's the exact same amount of time the old soviet union spent in afghanistan without success. the u.s. and allies launched a campaign in 2001 to wipe out al qaeda leader osama bin laden and the taliban. president obama has pledged to pull out american troops next year. but some troops could remain until the afghan government is ready to take over. even though they were far from home u.s. servicemen and

i was just talking to our chopper we are be taking a live look here. this is the macy's parking lot. you can see there are a ton of people out there. they are ready to snatch up the deals all morning long. we've seen our reporters at all the box stores grabbing these deals on hd tvs. you can see that this is really filled up quickly. if you want to get deals head out the door. this is the day to do it. black friday. here is a live look at the bay bridge in kline. you can see traffic is flowing very nicely as you make your way into san francisco. and up next we have a look at an accident. this is a traffic injury. 680 northbound at south mission boulevard. we have a report of a car that struck the center divider. there is an ambulance on the way. it is unknown at this time whether lanes are block the. 616 here is steve. >> thank you. high clouds moved into

mendocino county. you can pretty much end any drop in temperatures unless maybe toward the santa clara valley and the peninsula. the high clouds will stop anything from dropping too much farther. the wind has picked up. temperatures have come up farther. today we have the increasing clouds. a cold morning. mostly sunny. turning partly to mostly cloudy. 35 now san rafael and napa. napa was down to 30 and the wind kicked up. oakland and berkeley one degree warmer. san jose dropped to 33 and the city is at 43. tahoe was two below and now it's one. so it's warmer. there are cold readings down to san diego 44 in palm springs. that system will move in here tomorrow. rain develops overnight into early morning. cold morning sun then clouds start to come in.

50s on the temps. slight warming due to a south, southeast wind. that should help warm things up a little bit. rain is on saturday. clearing breezy and chilly on sunday. claudine. 6:17 markets move lower worldwide overnight with investigators worried about debt in europe and the ongoing tensions in korea. japan nikkei moved down slightly. overseas markets remain jittery following the recent military clash. european markets were also open market. we expect a lowering opening here. the debt market continues to trouble -- trouble the investigators. you can seat numbers 150 points up on the dow. that was boosted by upbeat economic data. we do not expect a lot of volume today. the new york stock exchange and

nasdaq will only be open for part of the day. san francisco based del monte foods agreed it will be sold for $4 billion in cash. if it goes through the buyout group would also assume del monte's $1.3 billion of debt. under a shop around option del monte has until january 8th to find a better offer. if no better deal materialized that sale is expected to close in march. apple is making a move in the south bay. they are buying up land that is going to double the size of its home base. apple bought 98 acres from hewlett packard. neither company has disclosed the sale price. north korea sent a chilling message to the world. the communist government says they plan military drills are pushing the peninsula to the brink of war.

sandra endo joins us live now from washington, d.c.. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. certainly tough talk coming from north korea this morning as the u.s. and south korea prepare to engage in their military drills starting on sunday. now this comes after tuesday's attack from the north to the south on young pung island. that's when four soldiers died because of this attack. now the u.s. is planning to sends the uss george washington to the yellow sea as a defensive measure during the drills which were planned months ago before these attacks. again north korea saying this morning that because the u.s. is engaging in these practice drills that it is pushing the peninsula to the brink of war so clearly some postering there. a lot of tough talk. meanwhile south korean defense minister in the after math resigned and now south korea

after all. we did get a warning from air quality officials that thought an alert might be necessary. alerts are called when they are high levels of matter in the air. but it appears the levels are still at acceptable level. several ski resorts will be open this holiday weekend thanks to six feet alpine opens today. kirkland and sugar bowl all opened this week. squall valley, north star were already open. the world's largest lakes including lake tahoe has been warming pretty rapidly. nasa scientists use satellite data to look at a hundred lakes around the world. they found on average the lakes have warmed two degrees in the last 25 years. lake tahoe is among the lake that is warming the most. tahoe has heated up three degrees. the first global study into

secondhand smoke caused 300 deaths a year. one-third of those killed by secondhand smoke are children. study also finds the u.s. has one of the lowest rates of people exposed to secondhand smoke. >> i worked in the industry when there wasn't a law like that. the difference now where there is and you go into restaurants is huge. >> in the bay area san francisco and santa clara county approved antismoking laws. the two bay events are being held at the same time. and at the same place. with the cold weather sitting in many people are using their gas heaters for the first time. firefighters say sometimes that can lead to problems. we'll explain coming up. also the opening bell is about to ring on wall street.

at wall street it is black friday today. the crowds are getting bigger by the minute. ktvu reporter christian is joining us now. what is happening out there now? >> reporter: that first surge the initial surge is starting to die down a bit. take a look. if this is the thinned out crowd you can imagine what it was like earlier. we have video of what it was like here. let's show you just how packed this store was. the doors opened here at 5:00. every available inch of the store this morning looking for the black friday deal. the line to get into the store before it opened today was down at the end of the building and wrapped around the block and halfway up that block. there was isolated reports of people pushing and shoving. it was nothing too serious.

folks tell us it was mostly when people tried to cut somebody in line. we talked to the father and son who say they are getting a great deal this morning on an x- box, blue ray and tv was a great deal. >> it was his idea. i'm here for him. yeah. >> reporter: security is saying this is just the beginning. we moved outside the store to show you. 6:30 in the morning and a steady stream of cars still moving into this best buy. lots and lots of people looking for that black friday deal. again, staff here says they expect to stay as busy as it is now or get more busy throughout the day. we are live here in san francisco. 6:31. thousands of black friday shoppers got up for the opening. this is what it looked like right after the gear idaho

doors open -- right after the doors opened. a mall spokesman says they expecting 30,000 shoppers today. >> it's my first black friday. i'm enjoying it so far it's kind of fun. i guess i will find out in the long run if it's worth it. >> after this we will go to target, walmart. all over the place. probably be out until 6:00 in the morning. >> police are patrolling lots on bicycles. the great mall will be open until 10:00 tonight. overnight a small earthquake rattled the corner of contra costa county. it hit at 1:15 in the morning. no reports of damages or injuries. a holiday toy drive could be at the center of a debate between pro and antigun groups this morning. the group is planning to meet

tomorrow at nations restaurant in pleasant hill. the event is also going to double as a toy drive. people against the idea of carrying guns in public plan to somehow up to that meeting to protest. >> these people don't have to have any training or screening. so we think it's a bad idea. >> you can never predict when a criminal is going to come and rob you or assault you. within a few seconds you will load your weapon and have it read den aavailable. >> california gun dep openers can carry -- california gun openers can carry guns as long as they are not loaded or near a school area. police are investigating a string of robberies. police say around 1:00 a.m. an employee was taking out the trash when three men assaulted him. the men took $600 and left. they wore dark clothing and their faces was covered.

that is similar to other robberies. the two police departments are sharinging information trying to determine if the robberies are located. >> right now it's too difficult to say whether it's the same suspects. based on the descriptions and the mo there is similarities there. >> police say the best thing the victims can do in these situations is to do what they are told and try to be a good witness. being able to recognize identifying features on the suspects will help the investigation. an early morning shooting sent two people to the hospital. police responded to a home on pepper tree way. witnesses say one victim was found on the curb and the second victim was found in the home. the woman was shot in the arm the other victim was shot in the neck. we are waiting to get confirmed information on information we got from the suspect. police are still searching for a suspect. it happened last night inside a

home on triangle court. officers say the shooting suspect is a man in his late 60s. his victim is in his 40s. he's been air lifted and is listed in critical condition. allie rasmus is live where there are problems. >> reporter: the fire trucks are gone. before they left i had a chance to talk to the pg&e worker. he had gone inside this home in berkeley. he was checking to make sure there was no carbon monoxide or gas leak problems. we found out there were no problems. while this investigation was going on, the four people that lived in this home were waiting outside in an ambulance trying to keep warm. berkeley firefighters were called out to the home around 3:30 this morning after one of the residents reported feeling dizzy smelling fumes and fell and passed out.

the family told them they had turned on their heater for the first time. with the cold weather setting in this is the time of year people should be aware of some of the problems heaters can cause. >> if a heater hasn't been used in a long time, it can get a build up of dust and dirt. the first time it can turn on it will burn off that and it will cause a foul smell. >> reporter: now again pg&e did not find any signs of oak sycessive -- excessive carbon monoxide in his home. the three other residents who live here have gone back inside. live in berkeley allie rasmus ktvu channel 2 new. >> it could have been a lot worst. it is 6:36 let's go to tara. she has information on an accident in the east bay. >> that is right.

purchases. some using public transportation. that's exactly the situation bart police say shoppers need to be aware of. shopping in the middle of the night when they can fall prey to thieves. the lines started forming around midnight. the big ticket item here was $300lcd tv. the doors at kohls opened an hour earlier at 3:00 a.m.. several hundred people there waited in line to get inside. retailers offered incentives and discounts just to initis the shoppers. and of course the great mall in mil pietist -- milpitas opened earlier. we were there to see shoppers there this morning and of course coming back out here live this is the holiday shopping safety tip that bart police have handed out to their riders this morning. we'll take the tips and use some-them at the sun valley mall a little later on. reporting live jade hernandez.

well from black friday to a brand new shopping day of the week. small business saturday which is tomorrow. the idea is to support your local businesses in your community to boost the economy and create jobs. several groups are driving that push and hopes you will carry it on throughout the year. research shows for every $100 spent $68 returns to the local community. and look out for cyber monday which is becoming the biggest online shopping days of the year. cyber monday the monday after thanks giving is a realtively new phenomenon but it seems to grow every year. figures show cyber monday shoppers spent on average $180 each last year. that's only been online for 7.5 minutes. later today federal agents will release new details about a discovery of a new drug. agents swarmed a warehouse in

south san diego early yesterday morning and discovered an under ground tunnel that connects to a home in tijuana. several people were arrested and undisclosed amount of marijuana was seized. this is the 76th tunnel discovered along the u.s.- mexico border in the last four years. three teenage boys are back on land this morning. after an extensive air and sea search failed, their families were convinced the boys had died at sea and held memorial services for them. the trio were rescued two days ago after a passing boat spotted them and picked them up. they were sunburned and dehydrated. the boys told the rescuers they survived by collecting rainwater and eating coconuts, raw fish, and a sea bird. now they say they want mcdonalds. >> that is an amazing story. time now 6:47. let's head out to tara moriarty who is in for sal. checking out a few minor traffic problems.

cities grease cycle program. it is a city effort to get them away from the suers. you can drop off the used oil this weekend at costco or recycle year around at select whole food stores. this morning ktvu is once again kicking off its an you'll holiday donation drive. it's called one warm coat. we are collecting coats for the needy this winter. we will be at four bay area locations to take the coats. ferry buildings, broadway plaza we're all going to be out there until 6:00 p.m.. organizers of the san francisco international car show are expecting a very busy day today. 36 car makers are showing off dozens of new 2011 models including alternative hybrids and all electric vehicles.
