"mornings on 2" starts now. >> good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm kraig debro in for dave clark. >> i'm claudine wong in for tori campbell. it is black friday. the crowds are getting bigger by the minute at bay area stores. ktvu's christen kafton has been watching these stores since very early this morning.

he joins us now with an update from san francisco. and i'm always impressed with the number of big-ticket items people are buying at those electronic stores. >> that's right. just about a half hour, we told you about the guy that dropped $ 4,500 on electronics. there's still a sizable crowd here. this is a scaled-back crowd. at 5:00 it was really jumping in here. let's show you some video of what it looked like a little earlier this morning. you can see it's absolutely p acked. there were people shopping in just about every inch of the store. the line was was around the -- the line was around the block. we're hearing of some pushing and shoving but nothing serious. and that would happen when somebody would try to cut in line. the big reason for the lines, the door-buster deals. we have some shoppers here who can talk about what kind of d

eals they got this morning. if we can just talk to you for a moment. what did you get this morning and how was the deal on it? >> this morning, i got the wii. it's a great system for everyday use. i travel a lot. it's really, really simple and easy to pack. it's only $160 less than the nintendo ds right now. >> reporter: what else did you get? you got some games? >> i got the chicken blaster. it comes with the gun and the game. the cool thing about it, n ormally it's $40 but because i had the coupons from game stop, they took it. it was only $20. >> reporter: wow. those are the kind of deals that folks have been looking for here for that black friday deal. the crowds are still pouring into best buy here. outside cars still streaming into the parking lot. folks here say that they are expecting big crowds like this throughout the day. we're live in san francisco,

little over an an hour ago -- a little over an hour ago. this was the scene outside the great mall in milpitas. that mall opened at midnight. milpitas police were also onhand patrolling on bicycles. a great mall spokesperson said the mall is offering deep discounts. >> dkny, 60% off. neiman marcus, 40% off. it's a variety. but it's all brand names at a great value. it's something that people are looking for. >> expect a lot of people to head there with you. they are expecting 30,000 shoppers throughout the day. it will be open until 10:00 tonight. hundreds of shoppers got an earlry start in emeryville. the store opened at 10:00 p.m. last night. that's two hours earlier than last year. crowds are so big, emeryville

when people are turning their heaters on. allie rasmus has more. >> reporter: it's very cold out here. a lot of people are turning on their heaters for the first t ime. that was the case with four people who live in this comb care behind me on shaddock and woolsey. those people had to call firefighters at 3:30 this morning after one of the residents reported feeling d izzy. he passed out and hit his head. fire crews and pg&e crew went inside to check for any carbon monoxide problems or gas leaks. the fire chief who was out here earlier says this is the time of year people shoulden aware of heaters having problems like that. >> if a heater hasn't been used, it can fill up with dust, dirt. sometimes the first time it will kick on, it will burn off. sometimes that will create a foul medical or a smell of

something burning, sometimes smoke and also carbon monoxide levels. >> reporter: a pg&e crew went inside the home. they did not find any signs of any excessive signs of carbon monoxide levels. the four people who lived here had now gone inside the house. pg&e says it's a good te to have your heater checked out and also your water heater because that can cause carbon monoxide problems. back to you. >> thank you. 7:06. this morning, police in san francisco are looking for a gunman responsibility for a d eadly shooting. it happened in the city's japan town neighborhood just before 9:00. police say a man shot and killed a woman inside her apartment house. it's not clear what led up to the deadly gunfire. about three hours later, san francisco police responded to another shooting. this one happened in the

mission district. investigators say one person was bounded -- wounded in the gunfire on the 1000 block of h ammen street. the victim is expected to survive. tara is joining us with traffic. it look like a parking lot out there. >> it does. >> most of the people out there right now are in the parking l ots because they are trying to get those deals today on black friday. be aware that ace trains are not running today and caps are operating on a holiday schedule -- and caltrans are operating on a holiday schedule. right now we're gonna take a look at highway 4 near p ittsburg. westbound portion on the -- traffic on the bottom portion of your screen there. that's making your way towards concord. next, the bay bridge toll plaza, we're experiencing extreme light traffic. 101 down in san jose. the sun just started to come up there. you can see that traffic is f lowing well on the right-hand side there if you are aided out

7:13. the crisis is escalating in korea. north korea now says the planned military drills by the u.s. and south korea are pushing the peninsula to the brink of war. cnn's sandra endo joins us from washington, d.c. with overnight developments. good morning, sandra. >> reporter: good morning, claudine. certainly a lot of tough talk coming out of north korea this morning. as you know, the u.s. and south korea are planning joint military drills in the yellow

sea starting on tuesday. as part of this drill, the u.s. has vowed to send the uss george washington to the yellow sea as a defensive measure for those drills but keep in mind, these drills were planned months ago before the attack happened but clearly north korea not happy about the situation, again, s aying that this move by u.s. officials is recklessly pushing the korean peninsula closer to the brink of war. now, meanwhile, south koreans' defense minister resigned after the attack happened. just today, south korea named a nominee. the u.s. again and the white house coming out of this area in d.c. saying that the u.s. stands by the ally, south korea, and will help its ally in any way possible.

early-bird specials until 1:00 p.m. sun valley mall opened its doors early this morning. jade hernandez joins us live from concord with more on black friday crowds there. >> reporter: good morning, jade. this is the holiday shopping safety tip list that b.a.r.t. is handing out to riders. they are warning shoppers to take only one credit card with them when they go shopping and to not buy too many items so they can safely carry them back home. we're live at the sun valley mall. traffic is very steady. but parking lots are full. but it's not crazy this morning. for those of you not driving to the mall or any retailer, b.a.r.t. is making lines as smooth as possible. police are out at three different b.a.r.t. stations warning shoppers. officers are greeting riders

hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> time now is 7:31. vacaville police are reviewing surveillance videotape to try to find the person who robbed a walmart employee at gunpoint. it happened tuesday night in the parking lot on helen power d rive. police just finished her shift and was inside her car when a man wearing a ski mask opened the door, robbed her and forced her to drive away. police say the man got out and ran. overnight a small earthquake rattled the northeast corner of contra costa county. the u.s. geological reports it was centered near bethel i lad. there are no reports of injuries or damage. an early-morning shooting in antioch sent two people to the hospital. police responded to a home on peppertree way around 2:45. witnesses say one victim was found on the curb and a second victim, a woman, was found inside the home. witnesses tell us the woman suffered a gunshot wound in the arm and that the other victim was shot in the neck.

still waiting to hear from police. but they are unconfirmed reports that investigators are searching for two suspects. police in richmond are still searching for a gunman responsible for a shooting in the city's iron triainging neighborhood. this happened last night inside a home on triangle court. officers say the shooting suspect is a man in his late 60s. the victim is 50 years old. he's been airlifted to john muir medical center where he's listed in stable condition. a san rafael police officer has been released from the hospital after he was reportedly struck by an unens willed and -- unlicensed and allegedly drunk driver. that happened in downtown san rafael. police say the man backed up and hit the officer while attempting to avoid a dui checkpoint. the driver is now in jail on $ 50,000 bond. this is a maximum e nforcement for the weekend for the highway patrol. you will see officers out tonight looking for dangerous drivers. the chp says so far drunk

including lake tahoe have been warming rapidly as the global climate changes. nasa scientists have been using satellite data to look at a hundred lakes around the world and they are finding lakes are warming up 2 degrees. that's happened over the last 25 years. the study's co-author says lake tahoe is among the lakes warming the most. what a difference a year makes when it comes to water in the south bay. a year ago, the santa clara valley water district says reservoirs below 50% of c apacity. and that was the third straight year of drought-like conditions. but now officials say reservoirs are much fuller and an added bonus is the recent heavy snowfall in the sierra. >> that's a huge part of our water supply. we consider that one of our biggest reservoirs, that s nowpack. the water district has walked mandatory conservation orders. but it is urging the public to maintain good habits. one of the most recognized

what was the idea behind it? >> it started in san francisco in 1992. lois had an extra coat and she wanted it to be given to somebody. now, what? almost 20 years later, we have coat drives all around the country, but the friday after thanksgiving is a special day for us. >> how many coats do you collect year to year? maybe you can tell us nationwide and maybe in the bay area. nation wild we'll be he very close to a million coats this year. here in the bay area, we collect between 40,000 and 45,000 and this day alone this year we collected 4500. come on down we've got girl scouts here. we've got staff here and we want i to get your coats out of these closets. >> do you ever get a chance to talk to some of these people and what is the reaction when they get a warm coat for the

ept winter. many people are homeless and need warmth to protect themselves? >> there is certainly the h omeless people. the kids are happy to get a coat but the parents are relieved that that pressure of keeping their child is one less thing to worry about. the economy is seeing more people out of a home because of foreclosure perhaps or perhaps they need a coat because of their income? >> yes. absolutely. it's an easy way. most of us have an extra coat in the closet. we're not asking for a new coat and we're the not asking you to spend a lot of money. >> i imagine some people, t hough, are giving pretty nice coats. have you seen anything like t hat? >> yes, we have. we've seen some great coats. we've seen coats with the price tags on them where people say here is somebody that needs a dote. >> okay. sherry. thank you for joining us.

acreage. they bought acreage from hewlett-packard on prune ridge avenue. neither company disclosed the sales price. apple has been on a role lately with the ipads and it's been hiring people as well. a bay area center that raised thousands of dollars for h.i.v. and a.i.d.s. programs will soon close its doors. the silicon valley a.i.d.s. leadership center will close by the end of the year because it doesn't have enough funding to stay open. the center had organized the walk for a.i.d.s. event which drew hundreds of walkers every year. a highway patrol helicopter had to be called in yesterday to rescue a hiker who took a 2 5-foot fall in the peak in the diablo foothills. the highway patrol says the hiker was hiking with a friend when he fell. he was taken to john muir medical center in walnut creek. crews said the hiker hurt his back and an ankle. three teenagers are finally

fed-ex is trying to figure out what happened to a missing package that contains a radioactive device. the package was being shipped from north korea to tennessee and contains a cylinder with r ods used for hospital m achinery. the nuclear regulatory commission says the item is safe as long as nobody tampers with the protective packaging around it. they also say because it was shipped using fed-ex there's not enough radioactive material

to create a dangerous condition. the fed-ex believes the package is in tennessee. a new audit shows the group that runs the san jose convention center overspent by $ 750,000. team san jose said they didn't know they had to sell the city about budget woes. the city is responsible for any shortfalls in the budget. the audit found that despite that overspending, several have received substantial bonuses. the ceo says the organization has changed its governing procedures. san rafael police has been released from the hospital after he was reportedly struck by an unlicensed and allegedly drunk driver. the incident happened wednesday night in downtown san rafael. police say the man backed up and hit the officer while attempting to avoid a dui checkpoint. the driver of 43-year-old guillermo garcia rodriquez is in jail being held in lieu of $ 50,000 bond.
