black friday is here and the stores are packed. we'll take you inside some most ovfilled stores in the bay area. the family of a young woman shot and killed in san francisco comes to the scene of the crime. we'll tell you what evidence the family hopes will help police in their investigation. i kept walking and walked to the corner here and i hoped -- i was hoping that the flames would just go out but they just kept going. >> a good samaritan calls for help after spotting a big fire.

what firefighters say he helped prevent. good afternoon. i'm claudine wong. tory campbell has the day off. shopping centers filled up before dawn as the holiday shopping rush began. we want to show you the scene at bridge point shopping center which used to be known as the fashion island mall. there it is. early this morning, the target store at this location opened early. you can see lots of shoppers took advantage of the expanded hours to hunt down those black friday bargains. it is the search for those bargains that had crowds lined up in the dark and in the cold. ktvu's christen en -- christian katton is live. let's take a look.

thinks the checkout area. there is not a free checkout area. it has been like this all morning long. very, very busy. you can see the rest of the stories absolutely packed be a it's been this way sips the doors opened here at 5:00 this morning. >> across the bay in san francisco, more than 1,000 people lined up to get the door buster deals. carlos karillo and his son were looking for a deal on tv, blu- ray player and an xbox and say it was worth it. wednesday afternoon, we got here. and it was his idea >> reporter: the doors finally opened shortly before 5:00. the crowds streamed in. mint, every inch of the store was jam packed. shoppers say their investment of a few lost hours of sleep paid off in big savings. >> it was pretty good. we got a tv and a p s 3. how much? >> what's the total? >> with the extended warranty,

800. >> reporter: at union square, shoppers streamed it and out of macy's at 4. shoppers say they found plenty of good deals. >> we bought a couple of stuff that were originally 60 and we got it for 20. it's pretty good. >> reporter: the crowd flowed into target in pleasant hills. lots of people said they found good deals but some came away disappointed. >> bit by the time got here, they had run out of things that i wanted. >> reporter: you can see that the parking lot here at best buy in emory ville is absolutely packed. more cars still arriving. it has been a steady stream of cars coming back. retailers say they expect this type of activity to keep up all day. we are live in emory ville.

>> always happy to see those big crowds. the great mall at malpitas opened at midnight. the big crowds were directed by attend attendants who were there to direct the crowd. police were also there. >> last call, they were doing 40% off all purchases. it's just a is a receipty but it's all brand names at a great value. so it's something that people are looking for. >> and they are expecting at least 30,000 shoppers throughout the day today. the great mall will be open until 10:00 tonight and look out, we are still waiting for cyber monday which is becoming one of the biggest online shopping. cyber monday is the monday

after thanksgiving. figures show that cyber monday shoppers were going to line for about 7 1/2 minutes. advocacy groups are promoting a brand new shopping day of the week now, small business saturday the that's tomorrow. the idea he is to support local businesses in your own community to boost the economy and create jobs. organizers are hoping that the idea will carry on throughout the year. ktvu is already shopping along lake shore avenue. research does show that for every $100 spent at locally owned independent stores, a big percentage teas here. local lines at union square this morning at the apple store. this is a one-day shop event for the ipad, ipod man quo, the ipod touch and the i mac as

well as a mac book pro and mac book air. we have posted a black friday survival tab on the front page of ktvu.com. it contains information on where to find the best deals both in stores and online. >> there are still a lot of questions surrounding the shooting dead of a young woman in san francisco. her body was found in the parking lot of an apartment building here san francisco's japantown. ktvu's allie rasmussen has been talking to people in the area. >> reporter: yesterday evening, some of the residents of the st. francis square cooperative department came home to find crime scene tape blocking the parking lot to the building. police and emergency wokers are long gone but you can see that the crime scene tape is still here. this shooting happened around 9:00 last night when san francisco police arrived, they discovered the body of a 20- year-old woman who had been shot in the parking lot.

she was pro numbered dead at the scene. several neighbors told us that, just prior to the shooting, they had seen a group of people gathering in front of the apartment building and, again, just before 9:00, that's when they say multiple gunshots. >> my mother, they heard the shooting, came out. they saw the body, called 911 and then she administered cpr but the young lady was already dead. she was probably, i think, in her early 20s, well dressed. she was shot from behind. >> reporter: this morning, some of the family members of the victim came to the scene of the crime with many more questions than answers. a man who identified himself as the victim's cousin said that his family does not know who would have wanted her to hurt this young woman. i don't know. i don't know. >> i don't know nothing. nobody know nothing. it's all a surprise. this is a surprise. >> reporter: now, there are

several surveillance cameras, as you can see, on the top of this apartment building. there are cameras on top of the buildings across the street. investigators hope that the cameras will provide some clues. the woman did not live in this apartment complex but did have several family members that lived in this area. right now, san francisco police say they have no information on the suspect. live in san francisco, allie rasmussen, ktvu channel 2 news thank you. an early morning shooting in antioch sent two people to the hospital. they say a 26-year-old man was found on the curb with a gunshot wound to his face. and the teenage girl was found inside with gunshot wound to her arm a leg. the victim watts hospitalized but the wound are notlife threatening. investigators say that they are still trying to figure out what

happened and they are following leads. center that is raising money for a.i.d.s. and hiv patients will close by next year. the center will close because it does not have enough funding tie open. the loss of corporate sponsorship was too much to overcome. the center organized the aids walk event which drew hundreds of walkers each year. jerome coffey was out walking his dog when he saw a homeless on throwing a burning object into a building. he kept walking. >> the homeless guy confronted him. and, you know, he threw some water on it but still didn't go out. that's when i wept across the street to the security guard and told them to call police and the fire department.

>> reporter: because of that call are firefighters were able to put the fire out quickly with minimal damage to the building. police told us they did take an arson suspect into custody. china is expressing concerns about the role of the u.s. in the growing conflict between north and south korea. china's foreign minister is criticizing a decision by the u.s. to send an aircraft carrier to the yellow sea for naval examiner sizes with the south korean forces. china is apparently worried that its rival could escalate tensions there. all this followed an attack by the north koreans on south korea. and an amazing story of survival in the south pack. what three teens did to survive almost two months at sea. and police had a mess am for riders. and rain could be on the way this weekend. meteorologist steve paulson will tell us when it will

in san francisco, fire crews had their hands full putting out a fire during the past hour. when firefighters arrived at the apartment building, the unit on the first floor of the two-floor building was engulfed in flames. one person was inside the apartment and got out safely. arson investigators are now at the crime scene to determine the cause. there is no word on an estimate b.a.r.t. police are searching for more suspects and victims in a series of robberies at b.a.r.t. stations. four men are already in custody. those men threatened to beat a man and say that the other suspect, 23-year-old danelle james of oakland robbed at least four people at san francisco's montgomery station. with those recent robberies in mind, safety is the message of the day for b.a.r.t. riders. officers were at several stations, talking to passengers

talking about how to keep themselves and others safe. >> we have to be aware. there are not a lot of officers on the actual train where you are. if they are not there, obviously, they can't help you but if you are more aware, you can help you. >> reporter: police say you should be aware of your surroundings at all time, and don't shop alone at night and don't buy more than you can carry. the frigid temperatures are a reminder of how warm a coat can be this holiday season and you can help. today, ktvu is kicking off it annual drive called one more coat. ktvu anchors and reporters are located around the area collecting coats. we'll check in with sal castenada right now. how is it going, sal? >> reporter: claudine, it's fun. the girl scouts get all kinds of patches but this year they get a warm coat patch just for

you guys is about 1,000 and that number will tip to grow throughout the day yet another sierra nevada ski resort is open. alpine meadows opened today earlier than anticipated. squaw valley north star, heavenly and boyle were already open it's been cold but now it can also be wet. ktvu's meteorologist steve paulson joins me now with a look at what we can expect tonight and this weekend. hi, steve. >> hi, claudine. there is a lot more snow expected in the tahoe area. some of the high clouds are coming in after the cold morning. if you are heading down to union square, bundle up. it will still be cold. strap just missed tying a record low this morning. 41 in 1919. last i saw, they were at 42.

down town oakland, 39. if you are in the sup, it's sometimes okay. temperatures in the low 50s. the entire clouds, though, leading the way for some rain. some of the lows this among, the coldest is 25 from our observer brody along marsh creek road. napa, 29. los gatos, 29. system coming in and spreading these higher cloud right now. it's become here that we have to wait for. rain will start in the north bay tomorrow morning and spread south for everybody. 50 to 52 covers the spread. does not matter if it's coast, bay or inland. everybody is rather close on these tells. it was 2 below now 23. it's a cold day and there were really cool readings for lows in california. there will be heavy rain up in the north coast.

this system will slide south by some afternoon and even the south bay will be looking at some rain. we have partly sunny keys. the lows tonight will be warmer as the clouds will come in. still cold but not as cold. rainfall about .1-inch. this will bring snow up into the mountains so if you are up there, you want it get up there, to go now, tomorrow ills the day when the system comes n sup and cloud, cool tomorrow. just a little bit warmer, not a lot. not too much. but as far as we go on the five- day, cloudy to. rain will spread south -- north to south, excuse me and they clearing and breezy on sunday. monday will be okay but cold in the morning. >> thanks, steve. any time . three teenagers are finally rescued after spending 50 days

in the south pacific. after 50 days at sea, their families were con vined they were dead and even held funerals for them. but a fishing tuna boat found them and rescued them. they survived by eating raw coke cut and raw fish and said they were hungry for mcdonald's. we are getting word that president obama has been injured but it's not serious. we'll tell you what happened and a lotto ticket worth millions was bought here in the bay area and it's still unclaimed.

president obama spent time in the white house's doctor's office today. he was playing basketball at fort mcnair with family and friends in washington, d.c. you can see him there holding hi hand. the reporter saw him holding something to his mouth. he was inadvent inadvertently hit in the mouth. there is no identity on the person who hit him but basketball is one the president's favorite sport

an 8 1/2 foot douglas fir arrived at the white house. first lady michelle obama was there to accept the tree. if you bought a lottery ticket at you better check. here are the wepting numbers, 41, 22, 43, 44, 15, and 14. applications for driver's licenses are peeling up at the dmv as a department spokeswoman says it's about two weeks behind in processing applications across the state. the dmv receives about 38,000 applications and the delay is being blamed on an enhanced security measure that will make
