the unidentified man was using the crossing when he was hit by a northbound train. >> the pd and the fire department had not the street closed by one lane blocked off. >> reporter: they have yet to determine if this death was an accident or a suicide. they say the warning lights, bells, and gate were all functioning properly. >> it's always possible that people make a mistake. they think they have more time than they have to go through a crossing. the gate comes down 29 seconds before the train goes through the crossing. >> reporter: but the on coming trains still have this young mother worried for her safety. >> i feel like by the time i hear the bells and the bars go down the train is almost here. >> reporter: another woman who grew up in burling game says cal train has improved its safety features. >> when i was a kid i used to walk up and down the tracks all

the time. >> reporter: while there have been ten deaths all this year there were 19 last year. half were suicides. when the gate is down you can go around the 50-foot fence to get across the other side. if you do you see a sign saying no stressing. >> we do a number of things working with the community to try to prevent suicides. it may be that's had an impact, but we can't say. >> reporter: i talked with the american foundation for suicide prevention today they told me education is the most important factor in preventing suicide. ktvu channel 2 new. san francisco police are reviewing tape of a fatal shooting. police arrived at cannon and engineery to find the body of abul. it happened outside the st. francis coop. the manager reviewed the tapes.

after the shooting the gunman came back to find her moving and shot her again. >> he shoots her like four times and runs away. but she was still moving so he came back. he came back and shot her three more times. >> at this point police have no suspects. the manager says he could tell the shooter was male but nothing more. san francisco will release audio tapes with an interview of two brothers. the examiner include an investigatorring ask paul and kulbir if they threw food at tiger. paul dhaliwal says no. investigators say i don't understand what would make a tiger want to come after you guys. >> the fact whether they had food or didn't have food is really i relevant to the --

reveal rant. a south bay community is mourning the death of a young marine. >> reporter: we are at piedmont hills high school where the young man graduated in 2009. one of the steppingstones to active but all too short military career. the grandfather of ardon says flowers keep arriving for his grandson who died wednesday while conducting combat operations in afghanistan. the grandfather says he is too devastating to talk on camera. at his high school piedmont hills in san jose friends remember a calm laid back classmate. >> he always seemed nice happen like a good guy.

never had problems with anybody. just a good kid around school. it's sad so many so young and fresh out of high school for their life to be over so quick. >> reporter: a parent echoed those sentiments. >> i thought about his parents and his family and the tragedy they are feeling especially around the holidays losing him. life is very short and we cherish our children. and so lose them at such a young age. >> reporter: a neighbor a former county commissioner for veterans affairs pointed out ardon chose to serve. >> it saddens me but to me there is no greater life to live your life than in service to others. so i know he died in the best way a soldier can and that is in service to his fellow man. >> it's great he wanted to serve his country. at the same time it's real out

there. >> reporter: ardon's family plans to return home tomorrow but they have not scheduled any services. the holiday shopping rush is on tonight. in fact it began 18 hours ago. for many bay area residents looking for a bargain. this walnut creek target opened up its doors at 4:00 a.m. hoping to lure in cost conscious customers. the hundreds of people waited in line finally made it inside to warm and low prices. their speculation tonight all the holiday shopping could turn into very good news for the economy. ktvu consumer editor tom vacar is live. >> reporter: have a look at this jam packed union square they are about to light the christmas tree. all day long union square has been a beehive of buying, boxes, and bag fulls.

what began at midnight here at the great mall continues to this very minute. this year consumer psychologist kit says she sees a trend that one of the recipients on your shopping list may be you. >> what we are seeing this holiday season is a lot of self- gifting. for people that have been frugal and allowing themselves with a bargain the opportunity to purchase for themselves as well. >> i'm probably going to spend more for christmas shopping. this is just stuff for me. >> i'm looking for bargains and of course i buy for myself. >> reporter: another trend. >> i think this year the stores will see a lot of people looking at their phone screen inside the store. >> reporter: they will use their smart phones to compare prices on the likes of ebay or

ktvu is kicking off its annual holiday drive called one warm coat. anchors and reporters are spread out throughout the bay area. we will check in with our mountain man. mark is life in walnut creek. high mark. >> on top of the mountain of coats here overwhelming the generosity out here. as a matter of fact our latest tally has it at 1,755 coats. just absolutely amazing and i'm surrounded here by the girl scouts and brownies that have given up one of their vacation days to come out here and work. right now they are in the bundling up process. packing it up. all the coats have got to go in bags. they will be distributed in the next 24 hours or so to the needy and homeless in the bay area. and they can always use more coats and want to remind you that you can come down any time

between now and january 1st. look for the one warm coat barrels and they will pick these barrels up a couple of times a day and they will be co between now and january 1st. and believe me, they can always use them. as a matter of fact, i want to remind you you can also bring baby clothes if you happen to have some in good condition to bring down. it has been an unbelievable success here. they broke the record by close to 500 coats i think. and it's just almost up toth 2,000 mark. so the walnut creek plaza in downtown broadway plaza has set the record and the beat just keeps going here as they pack it up. as we go back to you. what a night. just unbelievable generosity. i'm blown away frank. >> it really is. i was out there earlier. saw folks bring by brand new

president obama is nursing an injury tonight after being accidentally elbowed in a lip during a basketball game. he received stitches from white house doctors. he noticed a president through a window as he approached an ice pack. he is in excellent health. stocks shorten trading session. the dow dropped 95 points. investigators were afraid to commit because of uncertainties surrounding european debt problems. apple has made a big buy this thanks giving and could make the computer maker the largest landowner. apple filed a purchase deed on november 16th to obtain a 98-

acre site formerly owned by hewlett packard offices. they have hired 12,000 employees this year alone. their chocolate may be sweet but turned into a bitter legal battle. the hershey company filed a lawsuit claiming trademark infringement and unfair competition. hershey says mars is using packaging for its dove line of packaging. the two companies are the nations leading candy makers. we want to head back to the warm coat drive that has been going on all day long. we're going to start with ktvu lloyd. he is in san jose. >> reporter: i'm just amazed at this late hour people are still coming dropping off coats. it helpsth girl scout troop of san jose has been here

story under ktvu.com right now. a lot of things going on with the weather. not only is it cold out there but maybe rain in store this weekend. over to mark in tonight for bill. what are we looking at there? >> reporter: rainfall will be a factor on saturday. as you can see the rain showers closing in on the bay area. so far the rainfall up to our north up along the north coast for eureka. up toward crescent city. those white areas are areas of snow. as far as the southern extent of the rainfall we could have few sprinkles right now moving into parts of sonoma county. that will spread south through the next few hours. a few high clouds. you may have noticed the high clouds increasing by mid to late afternoon. more clouds expected overnight. rain will be a factor. the e tended forecast -- the extended forecast we are bringing in a dry weather

pattern. tomorrow morning we do not have freeze warnings. most areas will be in the 40s. could have a few 30s near napa. san jose 43. livermore 41. here is the set up on the satellite. so far targeting the northern portions of the state. in the short term the front will continue to move in. as a result cool rain will be developing. snow levels possiblely as low as 2500 feet. by mid to late afternoon we could be talking a chance of isolated thunderstorm. rainfall for your saturday and take this into sunday. no rain clouds here. we'll have a dry weather pattern. things pick up. here's our forecast model at 10:00 at least during the 10:00 news we could be talking about a few rain showers move into the north bay and tomorrow morning there is the rainfall

california super lot to sold at mall has not been claimed. it was the only ticket that matched all six winning numbers in wednesday nights drawing. the numbers are 41, 22, 44, 1r5, and the mega number is 14.
