hope. >> good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. >> and mike mibach in for kent wayne. the pressure is on to put you into your neighborhood shops. while big box stores are bringing in millions of dollars, small businesses are heavily banking on your buck. tonight, are the consumers showing up? patty lee has the story tonight. >> reporter: you can blame it on the weather but the small shops here did not get a lot of foot traffic earlier today, picking up now. but that led to mixed reviews from retailers about small business saturday. >> the fact that it was business as usual at walnut creek disappointed buyer erica bollwig. it's been slow. i don't think that small business saturday picked up as much asset should. >> because expectations for the promotion was low, any business

was welcome business. >> i don't know if that's pause of the support small business thing. >> small business owners say that they historically have received a lot of local support. and, this year, black friday retail numbers are up slightly. .3% over last year. and that was reflected locally. >> yesterday, we had our biggest black friday sips we opened this part of the store 4 1/2 years ago. >> consumer confidence also up in walnut creek. >> people are tired of spending money. they want to be happy and buy gift for their friends and family. >> here, competition for dollars is tougher t small business owners are counting on consumer loyalty, not door buster sales to make or break the season. thank you so much. >> reporter: this is a live look at north main street where the foot traffic is picking up. this is the kind of scene that small business owners were hoping for earlier today, but

it is still early in the season. they say traditionally, shopping picks up a couple of weeks before christmas and hanukkah. patty lee, ktvu channel 2 news. more americans skipped the long lines and shopped onlien yesterday for black friday special. the web research fun core metrics says that online shopping revenue rose 16% compared to last year and the average purchase jumped 12% to 112.90. >> members also collected toys for dough -- donations for the toys for tots program. but gun control supporters for the california brady campaign

said this event and similar events held where citizens carry unloaded guns put the public at risk. >> the goals between the brady campaign and ourselves are the same. we want to row dues gun vial epps and reduce crime in society. they say they are a law-abiding citizens but there is no way of knowing that. there is no accountability for this group. >> in california, gun owners can carry their guns openly as long as they are not loaded, holstered and the person he is not near a school or government after a few days of dry weather, rain returned to much of the bay areatoday. this is what it looked like today. in san francisco, people out and about this morning got a little soggy as they walked through the drizzle. ktvu meteorologist mark timaio is here with a look at some rain totals. >> heavy rain has moved out of

town. the overall trend has been decreasing over the past few hours. as far as totals, we have reports from heavy down pours, especially during the afternoon hours, scattered thunderstorms. santa rosa, .6-inch. san francisco, nearly 1/4 inch. we were forecasting rain fall amounts 1/4 i much to 3/4 inch in most neighborhoods. concord, fremont and also san jose, .16. right now, we can show you the coverage and not a lot out there. there he is the sweep showing you the current pattern as things are coming closer to concord. clayton and antioch. also expanded view once again right around the north bay looks like it's pushing around san francisco. a few light hours showers here. nothing too extreme here. but still possibility of a few showers this evening.

some break. we'll have the five-day forecast and the timing of the next storm coming up in a few minutes. the rain did cause flight days at san francisco international airport. most flights were running 30 to 50-minute delays. you are urged to call the airline for the latest information. authority identified a man who was killed by caltrain. the san mateo county coroner says that 49-year-old michael sullivan is a transient. he was struck and killed around 10:00 a.m. at the morella avenue crossing. investigators are still trying to determine if sul sullivan's death was a suicide or an accident. this is the 10th death involving cal trap this year. dui crackdown has been up.

975 people have been arrested for drunk driving, up from the twine thanksgiving week. here in the bay area, 277 drivers have been arrested compared to last year's 1139. there have been no fatality on area roadways this year. stanford's football team is on the vernal of breaking a school record for most wins. but despite the team's success this year, stanford stadium is far from full and that can have a big impact on the team's bowl hopes. ktvu's john sasaki is live now with more details on us. >> reporter: and that's a gorgeous new stadium. and the nationally ranked football team is on the verge of making a bowl game and, yet, sellouts are few and far in between here at stanford. >> standstanford-oregon --

stanford-oregon state programs. the crowd is always fired out. they are enthusiastic. we have a supportive student section. >> but it's a relatively small crowd. there is just one sellout against u.s.c. we would like to see it sold out each and every week as you see in so many other stadiums. legendary stanford quarterback jim plunkett is hoping for a time. >> hopefully we'll get there. we'll get to a points where we can't find a seem. the stadium holds 50,000 seat. the average is 40,000. >> it's disappointing. >> compare that to memorial stadium at uc berkeley where they hosted washington. >> cal had a streak of 50,000, 60,000 plus. they averaged 50,000 people per

willing to defend death row inmates is causing delays in the system. the raping times reports that nearly half of those condemned are waiting for attorneys. the average delay is 10 to 12 years. defense lawyers say that the shortage is due to the stress of representing a client facing death as well as inadequate state funding. california currently has more than 700 inmates on death row. illegal immigrants living in oakland could soon get the first id cards that could also function as debit card. the san francisco chronicle said that oakland card would be the first to let illegal -- to let immigrant flow money into it. that means that immigrants won't have to carrie cash around or pay costly fees at check cashing stores a massive tree came down in an oakland neighborhood today and narrowly missed homes and cars that were nearby.

this video is just new into the ktvu newsroom of the tree that came crashing down on east 25th street on highland avenue. as you can see, it ended up blocking most of the street but it did not hit any homes or cars. no one was hurt. the tree did take out power lines, hitting one home on the street. pg&e crews are working to clear that tree. it is not known if it had anything to do with the weather. today. >> across the bay area, thunderstorms move into the region early today. right now, the bulk of the activity moving out of down to the east. you can see the coverage. right now you can see the snow towards truckee. we'll bring it up for you right now. we can see some showers right around the clayton area.

go ahead and move the map across the bay. looks like some shower activity moving across the bay. golden state park, some showers across the park. looking across the bay, we will some late afternoon clearing. we had a chance for a shower tonight. it will be dry for sunday so no rain cloud to worry about in the next few hours. rain will return in the next few hours. partly cloudy skies, patchy fog, pretty chilly in santa rosa, napa, near the freezing point. san jose right around 40. livermore at 36 degrees. there is a frontal passage early this morning between 4 and 6:00. you can seat activity moving around town. we still have the instability around. the main action moves out of the east over night, being displaced by. this once again, a chilly start

and it as -- and as the high builds, we'll see some instability increase. winter storm warning in place for a few more hours until 10:00. additional snowfall could be on the order of 3 to 6 inches and winds gusting around 60 miles per hour but for the most part, the storm's snowfall amount is between 6 inches and 12 inches, so roughly a foot in the higher elevations of the sierra. 10:00 forecast, not much to show you on the forecast model here. tomorrow morning, maybe a few sprinkles approaching into mendocino county but your sunday will be dry. that's all reflected in the forecast for tomorrow morning. temperature in the mid-30s to mid-40s. afternoon hours, partly to mostly sunny. we do pick up in the oofnlg hours. you can see the 50s showing up. san jose, 55, morgan hill 56 and here is a look ahead. we are talking about another storm. there it is showing up. there is a chance for a few

country singer legend willie nelson is in trouble with the law again. border patrol agents found six ounces of mayor on his tour

bus. agents smelled the marijuana coming from the bus at a riew teen checkpoint and then searched it. nelson was freed on a $2,500 bail. the singer has been arrested before on drugs possession. he is an advocate of decriminalizing marijuana time to talk about sports. let's talk about stanford. one thing you can count on, around thanksgiving, lots of football. stanford will play in the rose bowl. the cardinals making a great case to be invited to a major bowl game. stanford wrapping up the regular season against oregon state and a letdown from the big game is not exactly happening. andrew lot to a wide open receiver. that made it 14-0. lock to baldwin again in the third quarter. 24-0 stanford at half time. that's the score early in the

third quarter. stanford trying to finish the season with an impressive 11-1 record cal hosted washington for the bears' feel game of the season. cal fighting for it bowl eligibility. 3-0 at the half. d'andre goodwin battled down the field with marc anthony. but goodwin wins the battle. but the bears battle back. jordan picks up a loose ball, gets into the end soap, 10-7 cal. it was a field goal battle until the last play of the game. washington scores on a 4th and goal as time expires. the huskies elected to go for it all without trying to kick a game-tying field goal. cal will not go to a bowl game this year. not exactly the way that the bears wanted to send old
