but in that scuffle took her taser and gun. that's when she ran into a health care center. >> a parent tried to come in to pick up her child and saw him, she started screaming which alarmed everybody else, there's a man with a gun, there's a man with a gun. >> reporter: haynseworth escape was thwarted. he ran into a home on english driver then into another house where after a four hour stand off police captured him. police say the sheriff's department is going to review the hospital for having one

deputy accompany inmates to the hospital. haynesworth is now facing new charges. robert handa, ktvu news. a rally is taking place right now in oakland to protest alleged police abuse and demand that mehserle not be released on bail while he appeals his sentence for killing oscar grant. i want to show you live pictures now of the group from news chopper two. they are gathering outside the alameda county's district attorneys office which is located at fallon street. the group which is calling for justice for oscar grant also includes family and friends of derrick jones. he was kill earlier this month in an officer involved shooting in oakland. this group plans to march. on friday, attorneys for mehserle will ask a judge to free him while in jail while his conviction is appealed. mehserle is convicted in july of involuntary manslaughter for

killing of the -- killing oscar grant. they argue mehserle has no realistic chance of winning an appeal. a student who held 23 classmates and a teenager hostage has died from a self- inflicted gunshot wound. 15-year-old samuel hengel shot himself as police stormed a classroom last night. the hostages were held for several hours, none of them was injured. one of them said that hengel pulled a gun while in class and shot a projector as they were watching a movie. extending the bush era tax cuts. the president made the announcement after meeting with congressional republicans. >> will help breakthrough the

noise and produce real gains. >> the current tax cuts expire at the end of the year. president obama wants to eliminate the tax break for people who earn more than $250,000 a year. but today republicans repeated their demand that the cuts remain in place for all americans. >> it's the view of 100% of senate republicans and a number of senate tkep democrats as well. that we ought to treat all taxpayers the same. president obama has charged treasury secretary tim githen er for reaching a guideline with republicans. the results could boost efforts to repeal the controversial policy and allow gays to serve openly. >> as relatively open to my piers, but i did win this need

but it's still almost 30% lower compared to it's peak in 2006. analysts say record foreclosures all the across the country are expected to push prices down further through next year. on wall street, stocks finished off on a down note on fears. the dow was down as much as 110 points but stocks leveled off as president obama agreed to come up with an agreement on the bush tax cuts. the nasdaq finished just below 2,050 with a 27 point loss. tensions are tightened tonight with nummi operators.

preliminary hearing here. but something has changed. a few defendants in other cases continue to be walked from the jail to the old courthouse. but no longer the seven men charged in the alleged gang rape of a 16-year-old richmond high school rape paraded across the street. >> i'm certainly pleased that, you know my client is not being paraded through town. i think it's far better the way they're being transported now, but i think the damage has been done. >> reporter: they found courtroom space in the adjoining jail. alex smith testified today that he interviewed another man who smith said admitted being at the scene at richmond high that night. was briefly arrested but is not

charged. this is what that man, 21-year- old salvador rodriguez told ktvu last year. >> i kept saying over and over that's someones little sister, that's someone's daughter, that's someone's granddaughter, leave her alone. >> reporter: rodriguez testified that he tried to cover the girl's half dressed body. but then admitted to fondling the girl, saying everybody went for it. in lenghty cross-examination, trial detective smith says he doesn't believe all of what

rodriguez told him and tkupt know doesn't know why he hasn't been charged. this case is just half the half way mark. the prosecutor says she plans to call nine more people to testify here. reporting live in martinez, rita williams, ktvu channel 2 news. palo alto police are looking for a man they said tried to rape a woman on thanksgiving. the woman managed to fight off her attacker before he got away. we're showing you here a sketch of the suspect. the man is described as a man in his late 20s to mid-30s. he has short black hair and a goatee. right now they are riding their bikes through one bay area city to drive home a point. the battle over gang injunctions takes center stage right now. i'll show you which days

every airline that flies through the united states will now be collecting the name, gender and birthday of every passenger. previously airlines were responsible for just checking names. a program called secure flight has been delayed for years due to privacy concerns. but now completes a recommendation from the 9/11 commission. it's no secret that the city has a gang problem, that's why the city is trying to put up a gang injunction. mike mibach live in oakland with our report. >> reporter: racial discrimination or tool to find gang related crime here in the fruitvale, that's the debate that's going on. one group tonight is peddling through these so called dangerous streets to prove a

a local business owner has been ordered to stand trial for the death of a number of goats. according to prosecutors, ayarsa, owner of goats r us will stand trial for animal cruelty. an employee with the company has also been charged. as the justices heard arguments on the conditions inside the state's penitentiary -- >> prisoners dying, committing suicide, spending time in feces smeared cells because there's no more room for them. everybody knows crowding is a problem. >> last year the state urged to cut the prison population. governor arnold schwarzenegger

appealed that ruling although he did acknowledge that overcrowding violates prisoners rights. the state is making progress in reducing the prison violation. he says if the state has to release prisoners quickly, people are going to die on the streets of california. >> crimes are going to be committed. >> if i was a citizen of california i would be concerned, stated a judge on the supreme court. the state is not expected to issue a decision until next spring or next summer. according to a new government report, drugged driving is becoming an alarming trend. deaths from car crashes have declined in recent years but the number of deadly crashes

tonight here in san francisco. reporting live, david stevenson, ktvu news. today voters in antioch finally learned the effects of two ballot type elections. antioch's november 2nd election was certified. agopian defeated anderson. wade harper also won a seat on the council. harper and agopian will be sworn in in tonight's city council meeting. two bay area companies stepped up today to help a high school hit by computer thieves over the thanksgiving holiday. apple computer is providing loaner congresswomen. the thieves made their way off with thousands of dollars of computers and equipment. >> the holiday season does

bring an increase in crime for almost every police department. we have never seen a burglary at this high school in at least ten years. >> belmont police are still reviewing surveillance videos. five contra costa school districts have been warned to tighten their belts or be taken over by the state. the county says it has approved their budgets but with a condition. each district must now present a recovery plan within two weeks before the county decides whether further action is needed. the simple act of getting groceries is about to get a lot harder for people in san francisco. customers at delaney supermarkets will have to find a new place to shop. ktvu's rob roth live in san

francisco with more, rob. >> reporter: we're inside the delanos in the mission district, delanos is having a going out of business sale. this is one of three delanos markets in san francisco plus two more that are closing for good. customers of the delanos were shocked that a market that stayed open 24 hours is closing for good. >> it's my all night refrigerator, and i don't think it's going to be an all night anymore. they are like family. >> reporter: delanos did not return our phone calls but the employees say they got the word the day before thanksgiving. leaving the chain with just two stores open one in fairfax and another in davis. attorney for delanos told us

verizon has agreed to pay out $6 million to it's employees to settle a class action lawsuit filed by the state. the suit challenged the cell phone company family care and medical leave practices. it says workers were denied time off when they or their family members were sick or were fired when they called in to work. verizon agreed to review it's policies on medical leave. toyota is grappling with one of it's models. this time it's a challenge with it's popular prius models. when pumps malfunctioned, the car's system switches off to

scientists in boston say they were able to reverse signs of aging in mice which could lead to treatments for age related diseases. they say they were able to reverse brain damage, restore sense of smell, even restore fertility in mice. mice dna was manipulated in the experiment, that cannot be done though to humans. doctors hope this study will help develop new drugs for diseases like alzheimer's. the u.s. senate has passed the most sweeping food safety over haul in decades. it gives the food and drug administration new powers to ensure the food we eat is safe. >> first time in seven decades that the congress says, address this issue. the senate bill follows a house bill passed last year that gives the fda new power to serve recalls. the fda will make it easier to trace contaminated products but critics say it's going to cost food makers more to meet the
