six. >> good evening. i'm heather holmes. >> it started a knock on the door and ended seconds later with a 9-year-old shot and wounded. right now the gunman is on the loose and the girl is in the hospital. ken pritchett live in oakland. >> reporter: that 9-year-old is recovering here at children's hospital. many questions remain unanswered about last night's shooting at this house. who did it, why and the question that likely can't be answered, why would anybody shoot a 9-year-old girl? yesterday there was a door here, a door opened by a child. >> unidentityed individual had come to the individual and knocked on the door, the girl opened the door, one shot was fired and then nine to ten more shots were fired. >> reporter: police say it happened at about 10:30 last

night. there are bullet holes and shattered glass and through the window we talked to the victim's aunt. she is afraid and didn't want her face shown. she was upstairs. >> crazy. lot of kids in this house run around crying because some bleep shot the house. >> reporter: the little girl is in stable condition with gun shot wounds to the neck and back. the aunt runs a daycare and said the house must have been targeted by mistake. >> i'm sure, we don't have any problem was anybody. >> reporter: police didn't release information as of this afternoon about the suspect other than that the suspect was male and ran from the scene. there were several witnesses with information, both in the home and among the neighbors. >> we believe believe that we have good information.

>> police believe it was isolated at this home. they plan to talk to that 9- year-old girl here at children's hospital once she recovers. in oakland. ken pritchett. >> at least four people have been shot in recent months answering the front door. in september a 57-year-old was shot and killed in the doorway of his home by two men who rang the doorbell. a month earlier a 25-year-old was shot and killed at his front door. there have been other similar shootings in oakland and concord. >> alameda police have arrested a man accused of stealing electronics from hotel rooms and then selling them online. police say the 28-year-old robert hung robbed two hotels. they say he was able to gain entry and didn't force his way in. he now faces charges of possessing stolen property, burglary and possession of burglary tools. he was caught thursday after a

laptop stolen was recognized on a craigslist add. officers arranged to meet with him posing as buyers and then arrested him. >> a boom is being used to contain debris from a house boat. the fire damaged six boats. the booms were put out yesterday by the dock owner when a sheen was seen on the water. a spokesman said the scene has evaporated and there is no pollution in the water. the boom is being left in place as a precaution until the debris from the fire is cleaned up. >> a wayward sea lion saved after wandering a couple miles away from any source of water. officials don't know how the animal ended up at an elementary school. she was first seen on delta road. the sheriff's department caught her until volunteers with the marine mammal center arrived.

also on scene were resident who went to see her. >> its cool. >> we have be our new mascot. >> the center said it has actually rescued the sea lion once before. she was released at point reyes. >> this season proving to be quite a challenge for those hoping to spread holiday cheer. while the number of children in need keeps growing money is falling. we are live in richmond. >> reporter: take a look around the richmond firefighter toy drive headquarters and you can see shelves holding ties for needy kids but the packaging hides a dark truth. this year's donations down dramaticly from last year. everybody loves a shopping spree and this is a shopping spree for children in need.

>> a lot of -- it gives us a lot of joy to be able to pick out the toys and know they will go to some kid who is going to get a lot of enjoyment out of it. >> reporter: today we watched the toy drive as it invaded wal- mart and richmond looking to spend about $4,000. dolls, board games, remote control cars, just some of the thing that will go to the county's neediest children. >> for them to get something like this, little boy to get something like that they would just be excited i think, so happy. have something to play with that they could call their own. >> reporter: while this looks like a lot of toys it doesn't come close to matching the needs. >> it's families from all walks of life. people that had jobs a year ago that don't have them now, when you say disadvantaged now its everybody. >> reporter: last year was hard for the toy drive. what is shocking that for this

time of the season toy and money donations are down by half from last year. fire station around the area have the barrels waiting for toy donations but a big part of the problem is that most of them are empty. the toy drive organizers are pleading for help from the public. >> by the time we are done we will probably touch over 2,000 families. not pat ourselves on the back, not meaning to do that but to say thank you to everybody in our community that comes out to help. >> reporter: officials say most of those needy families have two or more children. the give away happens on december 22nd. ktvu channel 2news. >> for more information on the toy drive and for ways you can help be sure to log onto the website. >> a silicon valley company known for creating technology put together something a bit different, 300 employees applied materials spent the

morning boxing up holiday meals for low income families. this year the technology company collected more than 325,000 pounds of food including turkeys and chickens, that food will provide a total of 254,000 meals. >> organization has dramaticly improved, the number of volunteers has dramaticly improved but most importantly the need and the amount of food actually collected has dramaticly increased. >> this is the 50th year they have organized the foot drive. the meals will be handed out to families by the second harvest food bank. >> the state park revealed it's newly renovated business center. the center got a 220,000-dollar face lift after park officials investigated things. they have a map of the mountain that lights up key landmarks.

. republicans used their new found force on capitol hill today in the battle over tax cuts. at issue, which americans should continue to benefit from the bush tax cuts. the president signaled he may bow to republican demands that taxes remain cut for all americans including the very wealthy. republicans would have to agree to other priorities important to democrats. shelby lynn with more. >> reporter: in a special saturday session motions to end debate on tax cuts for families

making under $250,000 and one million dollars were both defeated. democrats said both had late little chance of passes but wanted to be on the record that they are the party fighting for the middle class. u. republicans willing to hold hostage the middle class tax cuts to get a tax cuts for the wealthy. >> reporter: the president also weighed in. >> i am very disappointed that the senate didn't pass legislation that had passed the house. >> reporter: republicans came out accusing the democrats of sacrificing americans needs to score political points. >> we didn't need the show boats today to make any progress on trying to resolve this very, very significant issue. >> reporter: the one thing they all agree on, a deal needs to get done before the tax cuts expire at the end of the year meaning compromise would have to come. >> i'm relatively confident that the end of this process

will lead us to -- i think a very sensible decision. >> reporter: both parties want the tax cuts to remain in place at least in some form. democrats say the country can't afford to make them permanent for americans earning 250,000 or more. i'm shelby lynn. >> there is late word that the republican running against jerry has finally conceded. he said he called him to say congratulations to him on winning the election. the race between them was extremely close. at one time he led by less than 300 votes. the president is hale hails a new trade deal with south korea as a boom for the economy. he said it'll benefit a number of united states industries from farming to electronics and car making. he added that the best way to

speed up an he economic recovery is to open new markets around the world. >> we don't just want to be an economy that consumes other country's goods. we want to be building and exporting the goods that create jobs here in america and that keeps the united states competitive in the 21st century. >> the president said the agreement with south korea could boost exports by $11 billion a year. the deal must still be approved by congress. >> in news of the world, under fire by several governments, wikileaks has lost a major source of revenue. pay pal cut them. they said they took the action because the website violated its policy against encouraging illegal activities. the website faces no charges. earlier this week the website published thousands of secret cables. in iraq 17 people are dead

and more than 100 wounded after a series of bombings in baghdad. the bombs targeted shiit es. they come from around the world to visit shrines in iraq but the vast majority of them come from iran. in israel 41 people there are dead in the worst forest fire in that nation's history. dozens more are hurt or missing 17,000 people have now been evacuate from their homes. the fire actually started on thursday. police have taken two people into custody saying the cause appears to be negligence rather than arson. >> bringing back california's salmon industry was the focus today at a bay area summit. for some it was about protecting a falling species but others including a bay area congresswoman it's all about getting people back to work. >> i don't want to give up

eating salmon >> reporter: it was standing room only as dozens packed in to a event center for town hall meeting aimed at restoring the salmon population. jackie spear helped organize the event. >> most of you know that the salmon has not been the economic engine for the coastal community for the last three years. it used to be. >> reporter: experts say the numbers have fallen with the most dramatic losses in the sacramento river basin. >> we are -- dozens of fish it should be thousands. >> reporter: 2002 they counted almost 770,000, last year there were less than 40,000. he said restoring the population is key to getting people back to work. >> salmon means jobs.

thousands of jobs and billions of dollars in revenue for california. >> reporter: the value of full recovery of the salmon runs could be 94,000 new jobs and $5.7 billion in yearly revenue for the state. mike thompson said whatever the solution it needs to take into account the environment. >> the answer isn't off shore hatcheries to log down to the water's edge. we need to make sure that we keep our water sheds healthy so we cannot only have a healthy salmon stock but also have everything else that comes with living in the healthy environment. >> it's thought the decline over the last few years has resulted in the loss of 20,000

jobs. >> nevada will open it's first official bear hunting season next year. they voted to allow hunting and to contain the black bear population critics argue there aren't enough bears and hunting won't reduce conflicts between bears and humans. the commissioners disagreed and will work out details next year. >> woke up this morning to a light rain. then it cleared up for a short time so i could go take a walk. mark with the forecast. >> in fact we have more rain in the forecast. over the next 24 hour was rainfall rates picking up this time for. on the maps i can show you this, not a lot. we are starting up in the north bay, you can see also approaching napa as well a -- a few springless, few light showers, nothing to major and moving to the south you can see

is the chance of a light shower in to the afternoon rainfall developing that will set the stage for possibly heavier rain. we talked about the winds increasing the south. the southerly winds in advance of this weather system. some of the expectations, rainfall about a quarter of an inch. we could have amounts approaching an inch for the coastal hills. gusty winds and sierra snow above 6500 feet. we could have a few light showers in to tomorrow morning. not a lot to show you but still a chance of a light shower and then in to the afternoon we increase the coverage, especially by late tomorrow afternoon and into the evening hours, there is that heavier rain band moving on shower. forecast in the 50s here. the warmest location around 60 for san jose and morgan hill. here is a looka health the five- day into monday, we will hold on to the possibility of a few sprinkles. increasing clouds on tuesday

. two reports released this weekend offer opposing views of the impact of holding the america's cup in san francisco. the mayor's office released a report friday saying the race would net the city about $88 million but a report from the city's budget analyst suggests san francisco would loose $101 million. both reports were based on housing the raisers in the southern part of the waterfront but new plans call for the northern part of the waterfront that could save money. >> stanford didn't play but they were watching the team that did. >> the bcs picture coming in to light. the long shot situation that could have put stanford in the national championship game for the rose bowl didn't show up

today. the cardinal remains number four in tomorrow's standing they will be assured of playing in a bowl. oregon state hosted oregon in the 114th edition of the game known as the civil war. the ducks needing to win to wrap up a spot in the national championship game. miracle james, the combined for 267 yards, james makes the corner. oregon goes in front 16-7 at half and ran for 134 yards, barner ran for 133. the 4th quarter. the ducks win 37-20 to wrap up the season and earn a spot in the national championship game. ? they will play newton and the tigers. auburn against south carolina in the sec championship game. newton let itself fly. the ball is tipped, right into adams as the half expires. the gamecocks played them close in a regular season meeting between them but not today.
