an explosion from hell. >> what investigators say caused a blast that has a man fighting for his life and a home in shambles. we have an accident approaching the san mateo bridge. could be causing some delays. we'll tell you more. temperatures warmed up yesterday. in fact we had some mid-60s. what about today? will we continue the theme or see more clouds and rain? >> reporter: this morning residents are reacting to a string of violence here in antioch. we'll tell you what's happened in the last 24 hours that has them so concerned.

good morning to you. welcome to tuesday december the 7th. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. let's check in with steve paulson for a little morning weather. good morning pam, dave. we have partly to mostly cloudy skies. combination of patchy fog, inland fog than coastal fog. it's that time of year. highs with mostly sunny skies to the south and partly to mostly cloudy to the north. we'll be in the upper 50s andly 60s. now here's sal. steve, right now traffic is moving along okay. a little bit of fog and some mist on the bridges. it's not causing poor visibility so far, but we're going to keep an eye on it for you. also this morning's commute is okay on northbound 280 getting up to highway 17 in san jose. now let's go back to the desk. this morning investigators are searching for the cause of a powerful explosion that critically injured a man in oakland. that happened just after 8:00 last night at a home on 87th avenue. ktvu's kraig debro has home video of that blast.

kraig what is your occupation , what can you tell us. >> reporter: i spoke to a man earlier this morning who has security cameras outside of his home for other reasons. let's look at the home. you can see how the roof is caved in as the second story fell on top of the first. explosion of this two story home sends one person to the hospital. and neighbors running for cover. now here's what it looked like this morning. we checked out the neighbor who set up two cameras for home security captured the moment on digital cameras, two of them. the actual explosion seemed to last only a few seconds at most. not only did the house come down, neighbors saw something else they say they could hardly believe. >> we came running outside and they're saying this guy was on fire over there. run over there he was on fire on the ground. >> reporter: the 61-year-old has burns on 80% of his body. he's now at highland hospital listed in critical condition. the explosion collapsed a home

on 87th avenue just east of bancroft. second story story fell on the first story and the man living in the first unit. spencer lived in the bottom unit while renovating the top unit. the heat from the flames caught his clothes and man on fire. one neighbor leapt in to put the man on fire out. >> he was clearly asking for help. i jumped over the fence. saw this guy in flames and everything on the ground. i just jumped the fence and started taking his clothes off. >> reporter: according to a broadcast report, pg&e says the explosion was not caused by any of their infrastructure. no one else appears to have been injured during the explosion. it's believed some sort of natural gas accident caused that. other properties have been damaged. i have a call into pg&e right now. i'm hoping to talk to them for the next report i do in about half an hour from now. and get more information about

what might have caused this explosion and what if anything their pipelines and their gas had to do with it. live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:03. police investigating several violent crimes happened within the past 24 hours. the most recent crime was a shooting that happened during a carjacking on bison way late last night. ktvu's claudine wong back live with us with the details. good morning, claudine. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we're trying to track down more information on this latest crime, but we are on bison way where this happened. we can tell you this is near a school in a residential area. and it happened just hours ago. it is the third violent incident in just the last 24 hours. let's tell you what we do know about this latest crime. according to the contra costa county sheriff's department at 11:00 last night a woman was carjacked on bison way near country hills drive. at some point things turned into more than just a carjacking when she was shot in the stomach. we do not know her condition at

this hour or if they have any suspect information. we are trying to track that down. but this morning residents are reacting to news of the crime. >> kind of surprised to hear about the carjacking. normally this area is pretty good. it's always on the other side of town that's kind of seems like there's more violence. seems like it's coming this way. >> brings some concerns to me but i'm not doing to stop doing what i do unless i feel really threatened. i don't feel that. i feel safe in my neighborhood. >> reporter: we mentioned this was the third incident in a string of incidents. the other incidents started at 10:00 yesterday morning near the food max which is near the intersection of delta fair boulevard and buchanan road. in that incident there was an apparent fight where a woman was stabbed. she later died. a 56-year-old man was arrested. there was also a shooting we need to tell you about morning. antioch police investigating that shooting that happened around 3:00 yesterday afternoon on l street.

the 2300 block of l street. witnesses told police say heard several shots and saw two cars speed away. and a 22-year-old was found suffering from gunshot wounds. injuries are not apparently life threatening. certainly antioch police very busy this morning with three separate incidents all happening within the last 24 hours. one person dead, two others injured. we know of only one arrest in connection with any of these. these are stories we'll continue to follow for you this morning and bring you any developments as we get them. live in antioch, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. any minute now wikileaks founder is due to appear in a london courtroom. he surrendered to police as part of a sex crimes investigation in sweden. right now he's in the court building waiting to attend a hearing. now he has been hiding in britain since wikileaks began releasing hundreds of classified u.s. diplomatic cables last week. he has denied the sex crime allegations and his lawyer says he will fight extradition to

sweden. this just in we hear that visa says it has suspended all payments to wikileaks pending further investigation. time now 6:06. just weeks before christmas santa claus just got fired. macy's in union square has fired its long time santa claus all because of a naughty joke. john has been the macy's santa for 20 years. he's told the same joke thousands of times. but he's lost his job after an older couple found that joke inappropriate. he says he would only tell the joke to adults who when they asked him why he was so jolly he would say it's because he knows where "all the naughty boys and girls are." again, that couple complained and santa claus was fired. 6:07 is the time right now. let's go back over to sal. we know last time you said there was a crash near the toll plaza. san mateo bridge, how's that look? >> we're still watching that pam and dave. good morning to you.

the accident ended up being no injuries. however they're still fishing it out of the ravine it went down. westbound 92. not causing a big traffic jam but might cause a minor delay on the way to the san mateo bridge. no one is seriously injured in that accident. move along and look at westbound bay bridge. that traffic is getting a little bit busier. they should be turning on the metering lights any time soon. then you'll see a bigger back up at the toll plaza. also this morning we're looking at san francisco northbound 101 traffic which is on the left there the headlights approaching the billboard the traffic looks good as you can see heading up to the downtown area. at 6:08 let's go to steve. sal, thank you very much. partly cloudy skies over us right now. patchy fog showing up too. once that kind of burns off, clears then we'll have mostly sunny skies for a while. then increasing clouds later on. looks like partly to mostly cloudy in the north bay. partly to mostly sunny towards the south bay. and that will also impact how the rain is distributed

tomorrow which looks heavier to the north and a lot less to the south. strong system out there it will start to inch towards the pacific northwest which in turn will flatten that whole cloud mass towards us tomorrow. today though we start off reason why temperatures i kept some the same but cooled off a few even though mostly sunny skies, low's running about 10 degrees cooler than 24 hours ago. today it's a lot of 40s, yesterday 50s. a lot of ground to make up. san jose 65. oakland 64. 62 danville 65 yesterday. cooler today not bad in the city. 62. kept santa rosa the same. still close but not as warm. 40s for many. one 50. that's san francisco. i was looking at some of the observations a few upper 40s in san francisco. temperatures again noticeably cooler today than yesterday at this time. 20s in the mountains and 40s and fog. sacramento very mild with wind

increasing in advance of that system. most driving northward. once this low gets closer it will all drop towards us on wednesday into thursday. today it's a dry pattern. partly sunny, mostly sunny for a while and increasing clouds. clouds start to roll in here tonight into tomorrow with rain on the way. heavier to the north less to the south. into thursday a little windy at times. indicated by the wind advisory on the coast. sun and clouds, cool to mild highs mainly in the 60s. temperatures not as warm as yesterday. still not too bad. rain moves in on wednesday. for the north bay moderate to heavy. for south bay clouds and wind but not much rain. thursday more of the same. then we start to lift the jet stream northward which means partly sunny and clearing on friday and saturday. inland fog and it will be sunny and warmer. okay. time now 6:10. soldiers taking drastic measures to lose weight. the reason why just ahead. i'm scott mcfarland in

good morning to you. welcome back. president obama just cut a landmark deal last night with the republicans to give the american people a major tax cut for two more years. this deal also will extend unemployment benefits for 13

more months. now ktvu's scott mcfarland reports from washington d.c. that deal could possibly fall apart today. good morning, scott. >> reporter: too long, dave. his party doesn't like this deal. we're waiting to hear from nancy pelosi scheduled to have a capitol appearance about 2:00 p.m. pacific time to light the capitol christmas tree. other democrats have simply hammered this deal saying the president surrendered coming to this compromise. one house democrat called it a surrender another said the president punted away the football on third down. they wanted to allow the tax cuts to expire for millionaires and the wealthiest americans. there are congressional republicans unhappy about how much this will cost. adding hundreds of billions to the deficit. mr. obama tried to preempt some of this criticism. >> i have no doubt everyone will find something in this compromise they don't like. in fact, there are things in here i don't like. namely the extension of the tax cuts for the wealthiest

americans and the wealthest estates. >> reporter: for this to be a done deal congress has to sign off and clearly there are criticisms on both sides. vice president joe biden on capitol hill later today trying to rally support and save this possibly $800 billion tax deal. live in washington, scott mcfarland, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:14. elizabeth edwards who is gravely ill posted a statement on facebook thanking her many supporters during what is being called her final weeks of life. her doctors have told her there will be no more benefit of treating her for her cancer. elizabeth edwards separated from her husband john edwards after he admitted to an extramarital affair. the 61-year-old elizabeth edwards has been battling breast cancer since 2004. overnight defense secretary robert gates arrived in afghanistan. i want to show you video of gates visiting in the arabian

sea. he's making a holiday visit to thank the nearly 100,000 troops serving in the war. he will also assess progress in the nine year conflict. the review will gauge of beginning to withdraw forces in july. soldiers are actually using diet pills, laxatives, even liposuction surgery to meet the armies weight standards and keep their jobs. the soldiers who don't meet certain height and weight standards are given two months to make "satisfactory weight loss" which is typically about six to sixteen pounds. the army says 24,000 soldiers were discharged between 1992 and 2007 because they didn't comply with the weight standards. the debate over same sex marriage in california is now in the hands of a federal appeals court in san francisco. the panel heard arguments on prop 8 for two and a half hours yesterday and it was all broadcast live on c-span. the judges must decide whether prop 8 supporters have legal

standing to defend the band. the governor and attorney general refuse to defend it. the panel must also decide whether to uphold a ruling by a lower court that found prop 8 was unconstitutional. a ruling is expected to come later in writing. the losing side is expected to appeal first to the full ninth circuit all the way to the u.s. supreme court. now judge michael hawkins seen as the moderate of the three judge panel and he's the key to which way the ruling goes. however some law professors find him to be a hard read. >> i thought the judges did a good job. hawkins in particular and judge smith actually of disguising their gut level impression. they were keeping us on a high and neutral legal theoretical level. >> now the appeals court judges generally look to affirm the district judge's opinion and regardless of the outcome u.s. supreme court will want to review the case. on our channel 2 website you

can find extended clips from the prop 8 hearing. just go to ktvu.com, click on the prop 8 trial tab. 6:17 is the time right now. back over to sal. how's the commute? it's not too bad. as a matter of fact right now traffic is still looking okay in most areas. we're starting off on highway 24 the last few days it's actually been a pretty decent commute heading to the tunnel and beyond that. when you get to the toll plaza they have switched on the metering lights. pretty soon you'll begin to see a crowd. nothing you can't handle. about a five minute delay if that right now. also this morning looking at the livermore valley drive. looks good from livermore to castro valley. and it continues to look good across the peninsula so san mateo and redwood city. 6:18 now. let's go to steve. we have patchy fog out there. hold on -- i think it's livermore. yeah. livermore now says patchy fog. santa rosa and napa both reported some as well. it's getting close. i think by this weekend the coast will be gorgeous and

inland areas have to deal with the fog. you could have a good 15-degree spread on the temps. today the cloud cover will get closer. we'll have some sun, more clouds to the north, more sunshine peninsula south bay east but that system will bring rain tomorrow. right now mainly driving northward. on the mild side but noticeably cooler on the lows than 24 hours ago. patchy fog then some sun. 50s and 60s. 43 napa, santa rosa, same for concord, livermore, palo alto 42. oakland berkeley 46. yesterday these temperatures all around 54, 55, 56. we have to make up more ground today. 42 fresno. fog sacramento. fog stockton. if you're heading out to the big valley keep that in mind. that system will eventually get close to the big low spinning out there and that will drive the whole cloud mess towards us tomorrow and take us right into thursday. today patchy fog, some sun. then slowly increasing clouds. highs 50s and 60s. still on the mild side for

some. more clouds to the north. and cloudy with the rain now moderate to heavy possible towards the north and maybe not much at all towards the south. we'll fine tune that tomorrow. thursday about the same friday. inland fog saturday but i think the coast sunny and warmer. pam and dave. thank you, steve. one of the country's biggest credit reporting bureaus predicts consumers will gain more control over borrowing next year. transunion predicts less than 5% of all mortgage payments will be late. it's an improvement but still much higher than the 2% delinquency rate that's considered normal. it also predicts credit card late payments will fall below 1%. consumer reports at&t now ranks dead last in consumer satisfaction of all national wireless carriers. it received the worst rating in eight of nine categories including overall value, voice service and staff knowledge. other cell phone service providers maintained or improved their overall ratings. verizon ranks first, sprint nextel jumps to second with t

mobile in third. time now 6:20. a new economic forecast for california shows the state could have at least one more really rough year before the economy starts to bounce back. the anderson forecast from ucla says california will have a jobless rate of 11.4% in 2011. and the rate will not drop to single digits until 2012. it's a 12.4% right now. the report also expects real personal income to grow just 1.6% next year. but should nearly double that in 2012. it's a new take on making money. a bay area town may start minting its own currency. and the f.b.i. is warning cell phone users the latest cyber crime they call it smi you shaling. good morning. if you're in the south bay right now traffic continues to move well through the value illegal immigrant we'll tell you more about a serious problem we're hearing about in the east bay.

we're learning of breaking news in antioch where there's been a fatal hit-and-run accident near the corner of east 18th. east 18th is one of the main streets that parallels highway 4. this is not effecting

highway 4, but it may be effecting a very busy intersection there. it's right near the corner service station there. if you know antioch, it's a good area to avoid and it's very crowded at this time of the morning. antioch police have been there since about 2:00 this morning and still there doing a fatal hit-and-run -- they're classifying it as a homicide we're told. we have a reporter on the scene. we'll have more details straight ahead. 6:25. let's go back to the desk. we have sad news for marine rescue workers. they tell us here at ktvu that the wayward sea lion found wandering far from the ocean will have to be put down. the 5-year-old was found on the elementary school a few miles south of bethel island. workers at the marine mammal center ran tests on the sea lion and discovered she has severe brain damage likely from

eating a natural toxic found in algae. the marin county town of fair fax may soon begin minting its own currency. idea of a nonprofit group called sustainable fair fax. they want to produce fair bucks coins which would be worth $3. local businesses would have to buy the coins which they would then issue to customers as change. the coins could only be redeemed at businesses in fair fax. they're borrowing the idea from west marin where a similar program started in the spring. time now just turning 6:26. and the f.b.i. is warning smart phone users about a new scam. it's called smishing. experts say cyber criminals fish for information by sending a text to your phone. the message could encourage phone users to call a premium number that charges a fee or it goes to an unsecured website that asks for personal credit card or banking information. it could also entice you to down load applications or free games that have malicious software built in. >> it would start up like a

normal app. no one would know any different. three times a day place a premium rate text to a premium rate number. it costs $7 for every text. >> i don't want my phone to get corrupted with a virus or anything like that. i'm not sure how that works. >> the experts say the best way to protect yourself is delete any messages. governor schwarzenegger proposing harsh budget cuts in his last month in office to deal with the state's ongoing budget deficit. the governor wants to cut food stamps, child care and welfare programs. and he's called lawmakers into a special session to reduce the deficit before he leaves office january 3rd. but many lawmakers especially democrats say they prefer to wait until governor-elect jerry brown is sworn in. brown has scheduled a budget forum in sacramento tomorrow. a bay area assault case is getting national attention. a san francisco man says he's not the man who should be going on trial today.

morning. and we'll talk about the reasons why in just a little bit. >> i told you he was smarter than the average bear. >> yes, he is. smile and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us on the ktvu morning news tuesday december 7th. i'm dave clark. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. time now 6:30. this morning a lot is happening. investigators searching for the cause of a powerful explosion that critically injured a man. it happened last night at this home on 87th avenue. kraig debro is out there. he has home video of the blast as it happened. >> reporter: good morning, dave. earthquake and explosion. those are two words neighbors use today describe what happened near their home. this is the home behind me. take a look at the top there. the roof is just sort of caved in. sort of collapsed on top of itself there. the bottom floor seems to be in tact right now. the fire department says i felt sounds like a natural gas explosion and bases that on how people describe the sounds and

smell. the pictures tell the story in this videotape. a neighbor who set up two digital cameras two years ago after being robbed caught the explosion on two separate cameras. the short length of what the camera caught actually half of what people felt. >> it happened so fast. the whole house rumbled. you could feel the heat. and it was scary. >> it sounded like an earthquake. i'm sitting this way in the house watching tv and boom. >> reporter: the 61-year-old man has burns on 80% of his body now listed in critical condition. the explosion collapsed this home the second story fell on top of the first and the man living in that first story unit was mr. spencer. he lived in the bottom unit while he was renovating that top unit. >> looked out and that's when i saw the place collapse.

i opened the door and i heard donna help me, donna help me. it was leon on fire. >> reporter: another nape leapt into action first knocking mr. spencer to the ground trying to cover himself with the blanket. they had to strip the blanket and leon's clothes. the force shattered the windows of the building just basically two doors down. three adults and a child were evacuated and now being assisted by the red cross. i got a call into pg&e this morning. i'm going to keep trying them to see if i can get hold of them to see if they can tell me anything about what happened here. the fire department says they believe it's a natural gas explosion. since pg&e supplies natural gas at least most of it, going to see if they know anything about this and see if they can figure out a cause. live in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. the san francisco man who says a priest sexually abused him as a child gets his day in court today. but not the way he hoped.

the 44-year-old is expected to appear before a judge in santa clara county on criminal assault charges. he's accused of attacking the priest who says he raped him and his little brother since they were little boys. prosecutors have been barred from charging the reverend with child molestation even though the catholic church eventually paid the brothers, that's because lynch did not report the abuse until 20 years after it occurred and the statute of limitations ran out. 6:34. the father of a 4-month-old baby boy in oakland is now in jail accused of causing the death of his son. the baby lived with his parents. police say the baby's 26-year- old father caused unspecified injuries that led to his son's death early sunday morning. the child had been in the hospital for almost two weeks. he was being held on felony child abuse. prosecutors say it's possible

he could soon face murder charges. people accused of kidnapping and brutally beating a santa rosa man are due in court today. the victim is in intensive care with major head injuries. the victim's ex-girlfriend lured him into a house on bridgewood drive sunday and her ex-husband and another man attacked him. police say the men hit and kicked the victim, bound him with duct tape and threatened to set him on fire. the suspects are identified as 35-year-old, 42-year-old and 47- year-old. we have breaking news out of antioch right now. police are looking for a driver involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed one. it happened this morning. claudine wong just arrived on the scene. claudine, what can you tell us about this? >> reporter: this road is still shut down at this point. let me show you what's happening here here in antioch.

they've shut down this portion of the road where this hit-and- run happened. looking at evidence markers it appears it happened in front of this produce market out here. at this point we know it happened just before 2:00 this morning. the victim was dragged 75 feet at least. and was pronounced dead at the hospital. at this point they are searching for the person responsible. and they do have a description of the car they are looking for. it is described as a silver or gray nissan four door with a luggage rack over the cab only. it's a pickup truck. tinted windows. they do not have a license plate on this vehicle right now. but, again, this is still a very active scene here in antioch as they search for whoever was responsible for dragging this victim 75 feet and killing this person. we are still trying to get more information on the victim and on the details of what happened out here. but we'll continue to follow this story and bring you updates as we get them. live in antioch, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. go now to sal who is taking a

look at the roads. sal, this is i'm sure a fairly busy street. at this point it's blocked off. but i think cars are making their way around it at this point. yeah, claudine. right near there runs into east 18th street. now in antioch the highway's busy heading westbound out toward concord only. some people use east 18th to get around that slow traffic on highway 4. obviously this morning it's not available for you. the road is also pretty busy normally at this time. but, again, it's closed and claudine will stay on the scene and give us updates from that fatal hit-and-run accident. let's go out and take a look at some live pictures westbound bay bridge. backed up now. the metering lights are on. you can see fog moving in it's a little low and may be low on the bridge itself. so, again, give yourself a little bit more time and don't use the high beams in the fog. it's not helpful. in fact it hurts your visibility. let's move along and take a look at northbound 280 as you drive up to highway 17.

that traffic moves well. first word of an accident northbound 101 at fully in san jose. first word of a crash on the shoulder. 6:37. let's go to steve. thank you. before we get going on local weather, fort lauderdale, florida, dropped to 40 degrees this morning. a record low for december 7th. the coldest december 7th in 169 years. that's impressive. not only that there's going to be really cold, cold system if you're traveling this weekend or any time really towards the end of the week from the great lakes down to florida. now they're talking about damage to their citrus crops and they have about a week's worth of this weather. record lows already coming in. for us sun and clouds. cool and mild. a lot of high clouds over us and bit of patchy fog. storm system to the left of your screen will eventually the next day or two start to move into the pacific northwest. that will drag this system like that over us. but not today. today there's a fine line south bay mostly sunny. north bay mostly cloudy.

that's the way it's looking. some patchy fog too. it's rearing to go that fog. that valley fog. it's not really classic set up yet but it might be by the weekend. 50s and 60s today on your temperatures. half-moon bay forecast our target forecast today starting off 47, 55 and a high of 59 degrees today. by the weekend they may be about 65 or 66 degrees while inland areas have to deal with some fog. today though because of the temperatures are starting off about ten degrees cooler in the lows which is why i cooled off some locations. danville being one 65, 62 today. oakland two degrees cooler same for san jose. still in the 60s, but we have to make up a lot more ground. yesterday at this time about 55, 56, 57. only one 50 everyone else in the 40s. 20s in the mountains including 29 also in reno. 43 with fog sacramento, stockton, 44 redding. but 58 eureka with wind advisories because of that system right there.

now, again, it's aligning itself north-south parallel to the coast. as it gets closer follow a lot of clouds and this will set up for rain tomorrow especially in the north bay. patchy fog then sun. more sun to the south. more clouds to the north. cool to mild. we're starting off rather chill will with 40s. end up with 50s and 60s on the temps. rain moves in wednesday. especially points north. oakland, vallejo, fairfield. south of that not as much. carry that into thursday, start to clear friday and then saturday the coast looks great. have to deal with some of that inland fog. all right. thank you, steve. well, it all ended well, but what prompted a cat to take a flying leap? what that cat did after jumping from a 50-foot high power pole.

well, good morning to you. welcome back. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we're following for you right now. at 6:43 wikileaks founder now in a courtroom in london. he surrendered to the police. this is part of a sex crime investigation in sweden. and just a couple of moments ago he said he will fight extradition to sweden. president obama has reached a compromise with congressional republicans to continue the tax cuts for all americans. in exchange though, republicans

would agree to extending unemployment benefits. however, some democrats hate this plan. they may try to block it. and this morning investigators in oakland are serging searching for the cause of this powerful explosion. you're looking at home video of that blast on 87th avenue. we're going to bring you a live update on all of this coming up at the top of the hour. a radio news show produced by the al jazeera network has hit the air waves in the bay area. the new programming is something many people at a radio station in berkeley can agree on. jade hernandez joins us with the details. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning. we just spoke to the woman responsible for making the decision about airing this program at this radio station kpfa in berkeley. she says the decision to air the program was made for two reasons. cost and perspective. >> we felt that they offered another perspective on the news. that they particularly cover international news although

they also cover many things in this country. some are slightly different perspective, a slightly more outside eye than we tend to get from the news in this country. >> reporter: the pacifica foundation was one of three companies to run the one hour al jazeera english news program across the country on its radio station kpfa. it's aired in washington, new york and l.a. for the first time yesterday morning. the 150 affiliates will have access to the show. the program airs from 6:00 to 7:00 weekdays pushing democracy now with amy good win to 7:00. the show indirectly filled programming which opened up after kpfa canceled its two hour local news show about a month ago due to budget cuts. employees' shock over layoffs turned to rage then protest because employees claimed management failed to find an alternative to the cuts. up until this point the al jazeera network has been only aired its radio shows through satellite subscriptions.

about an hour ago we also spoke to kpfa's news co-director who says she hasn't always agreed with the foundation's decisions but this one she does. live in berkeley this morning, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:45. a santa rosa woman is safe this morning after being stranded for hours in the woods. volunteers spent sunday night looking for the 41-year-old in the hills near willow creek road. she became lost sunday afternoon after becoming separated from a friend while they were out picking mushrooms. searchers were able to track her from the gps on her cell phone but couldn't reach her until yesterday morning because of all of this stormy weather. the vallejo school board focusing on freshmen as it considers ways to improve their school's experience. the district says ninth graders make up the majority of expulsion cases and changes are need today help reduce the dropout rate. some proposed ideas include a summer program for incoming

freshman, a yearlong transition course and regular meetings with advisors. the school board plans to vote on the proposal on wednesday. you have to see this story. an arizona cat is home safe with her owners this morning. that's after a daring jump from a 50-foot high power pole. that little cat, kim, was stuck on the pole in tucson, arizona, for at least two days. emergency crews with a large cherry picker came to rescue her yesterday but as they got close, well, cat had other ideas. she leapt off the pole and ran right back into her owner's apartment. she wasn't hurt but was taken to the vet as a precaution. this sunday san francisco city hall will open its doors for its first ever holiday open house. the public will be able to meet and greet the mayor, supervisors and other city officials. the open house will be held between 2:00 and 5:00 sunday afternoon.

that's a beautiful tree. the outgoing mayor came up with this idea as a new way to celebrate the holiday season. 6:47 is the time. let's go back to sal to check in on traffic. all right. pam and dave, you know the traffic is actually getting much busier all over the bay area. let's go out to the toll plaza. it's foggy and backed up beyond the 880 overcrossing. so there is quite a back up. 15 to 20 minute delay there. more like 15 minutes maybe 20 before too long. but right now when you get on to the bridge another ten minutes or so getting into san francisco along that bridge. so total time about 25 minutes. this is a look at 880 northbound as you drive past the coliseum. no major issues as you drive to downtown. also this morning we're looking at highway 4. we keep an eye on that. it's pretty slow there coming out of antioch on the way to concord. however there were no accidents or stalled vehicles reported. 6:48. let's go to steve. sal, thank you, sir. very good morning to you. painted a pretty picture, but

the fog as you saw from the bay bridge we will have mostly sunny skies. fog could be a little tough in the morning then mostly sunny to the south. partly to mostly cloudy towards the north bay in advance of a system which will be here tomorrow. probably tomorrow morning for the north bay and then tomorrow around noon to late afternoon evening for everyone else. a lot of moisture this system. today though we're in between. we're ready for this system to come in. right now it's driving northward. and it will continue to do so. as it does you can see the dry air right there. mostly sunny south, partly cloudy to the north until the system plows in which will be tomorrow. patchy fog and some of that is thick. we're getting that it's rearing to go. the inland fog, some sun for a while, increasing high clouds but still upper 50s, low 60s. half-moon bay 47 to start, 55 for a high. san francisco right at 50. but everyone else is showing temperatures in the 40s. yesterday was a lot of mid-50s. go for a high of 60 in san

francisco today. 40s, 43 napa, santa rosa, palo alto, 42. concord, livermore reports fog as well. 43 san jose 44. 20s mountains, 20 reno. 40s with fog sacramento, stockton reporting fog. but 58 eureka and very windy conditions. so mild this low. then comes closer this whole part of this system will drop south on us tomorrow and that will give us a lot of clouds and rain. today it's a dry pattern. partly sunny. mild for some. but, again, we have to make up another ten degrees compared to yesterday we started off in the 50s. cloudy skies move in wednesday and thursday. there will be rain with it. moderate to heavy especially in the north bay but not so much to the south. patchy fog gives way to sunshine for a while. cool to mild 50s and 60s on your temperatures. five day we cloud up and bring rain in tomorrow. clouds and range will linger into thursday. then the jet stream starts to lift on friday clearing it out. saturday i think the coast will be gorgeous. 60s, but inland a lot of the

valley fog which could mean for cool temperatures and tough driving conditions. all right. well, the treasury department is about to sell the last of its citi group common stock. the government received the stock in exchange for $45 billion in bailout funds. after the sale taxpayers will have made $12 billion on the investment. that number is expected to go higher once the government sells its warrants and preferred securities. let's check in on wall street. wall street tends to be pretty conservative and investors there like what they heard from president obama that the tax breaks will be extended and the numbers are rallying on that. stocks up 80 points for the dow. there's a live look at the big board on the new york stock exchange. 11,442. the nasdaq and s&p 500 also up each almost 1%. the u.s. supreme court will decide if a sexual discrimination suit against the world's largest retailer should be granted class action status. the lawsuit against wal-mart claims female employees were

wears these stilts. he jumps over a car driven by his father. unfortunately, when they did this stunt on live tv he landed face first. he got a lot of injuries, a lot of fractures, his injuries are considered life threatening. a cruise ship picked up some extra passenger this is weekend on the way back from the bahamas. a raft was spotted floating off the florida coast on sunday. five men and one woman were on the raft. apparently trying to sail to the united states. passengers on the cruise ship watched it all as they were allowed to hitch a ride. >> you're just worried that a wave was just going to smack them into the side of the boat and that was going to be it. >> the gentleman screaming jesus lives, jesus lives. it was a very touching experience. >> officials say they think the people on the raft might be from cuba. they're being questioned by the coast guard now. a 33-year-old southern california man may be the new record holder for the largest
