50s. sore picking up -- santa rosa picking unrain. out to -- up some rain. out to tracy. finally, the peninsula, a pretty good band coming in right off the shore from the pacifica and daly city. 7:02. topping our other top story -- some developing news, police are investigating a violent takeover robbery in berkeley. officers were called to a mcdonald's on san pablo avenue about an hour and a half ago. kraig debro joins us live from the scene with the latest on the search for suspects. >> reporter: still no word from berkeley police. a lot of the cars have left the

scene. if you look inside the restaurant, you can see there's one or are or two officers inside. this is the 1100 block of san pack pre-- san pablo. this all began around 5:30 this morning. take a look at this. this is how we knew it was a violent robbery. the paramedics are checking o ut -- checking out a guy an employee. apparently he was hit during the course of the robbery or bumped his head during the course of the robbery. we saw him later with the ice pack on the head. he's now left the scene and appears to be okay. if you look at the employees, a lot of worried looks on their face -- on their faces. must have been a very f rightening deal. we're not sure. we've not confirmed if there were any more injuries. whoever did this made a hasty retreat and we can tell by what we saw in the back of the restaurant. there there is a trail of money behind the restaurant at 5:45 this morning. it's uncovered. police have put their evidence markers next to the money. it's only about $20 to $30.

but i think it indicates whoever left this, left fast. we've tried to talk to the employees but as tight-lipped as the police have been, the employees have even been more tight-lipped. i haven't been able to get any word out of them. i'm gonna continue to try to confirm some of the information we have and then try to talk to some of the employees in our next report. back to you. >> thank you. 7:04. this morning, berkeley police are searching for suspects in a series of robberies. the two most recent incident -- incidents happened near the b.a.r.t. station. last month police say there were six other armed robberies and that the victims were often distracted by cell phones and

ipods. this morning we talked to one woman who says she always takes precautions heading to or from her car. i'm extremely cautious. i'm here at a particular time. my door is always locked. i don't put my club on -- so that i can take off at any moment if anyone approached. a community meeting on the robberies will be held tonight at 7:30 for details go to our channel 2 website. 7:05. it was a meeting that started with tension and it ended with anger. last night the head of the public utilities commission met with dozens of -- dozens of victims of the pipeline disaster in san bruno. the director outraged a lot of people when he -- when he d efend -- when he defended the $ 500 million received for customers. that money was initially planned to repair the pipeline that runs right near the san

bruno disaster zone. pg&e says an explosion that destroyed a house in oakland is not their fault. this was not caused by a leak from any pg&e pipelines. oakland firefighters believe a natural gas explosion caused that crash. it was apparently triggered when the man living in the home f lipped the light switch. he has burns over 80% of his body. a cost-saving measure by the school district apparently b ackfired and now students are left without any heated classrooms. jade hernandez is live with the latest. good morning, jade. >> reporter: good morning, dave. we have some new information for you from an employee who just arrived. she told me that there is still no heat in the main part of the building. i'm gonna step out of the way. the main part of the building has no heat but i've been told the portables on the side do

have heat. the principal is expected to get here at 8:30. school starts at 4:00. these elementary school students around 8:45. all school officials can do is tell their officials to bundle up. nineteen schools were affected. we're live at one of the schools in kaiser. there's 265 students here, have been without heat for more than a week. kaiser had an -- kaiser is an elementary school school from students -- with students f rom -- with students from the fifth and sixth grade. last year, they say the heating problem in the schools, i ncluding this video shot last week at frick middle school, had to do with the cost- -cutting measure of turning of the heat during the holiday break. when the heat was turned back o n, some of it would not operate clearly. last year, the district d ownsized technicians by 50%. the districts have since

apologized. and some schools like frick middle have had heat restored. right now the district is trying to -- trying to remedy the problem. kaiser elementary still is without heat. it does have heat in the p ortables but we should hear from the principal a as soon as the principal arrives -- principal as soon as the principal arrives. back to you. >> thank you. this morning, governor- elect jerry brown will hold a budget forum in sacramento. brown has said he recognizes the budget challenges facing him when he takes office in january and he told lawmakers to get out of their comfort zone in regard to tackling the deficit. >> sal is sackle -- tackling our commute. we have wet roads. whenever it does rain, there is a correlation with more collisions on the roads.

this morning has been that way. westbound bay bridge, we had a six-car collision on the upper deck of the bay bridge. it's backed up at the toll plaza for at least a 20-minute delay. we keep saying this lasted about 10, 15 m inutes. every minute that the lane is blocked, we get more and more people stuck in traffic. let's take a look at san francisco. some wet weather here you can tell our camera is getting wet as well. northbound 101 on the left approaching the 80 split. it's moderately heavy. this morning in the south bay, we've had some slow traffic as you drive on 101, that's the slowest. also 280 is slow downtown. no major issues reported in the santa cruz mountains in case you are coming in over the hill. 7:09. let's go to steve. the next couple of days look to be cloudy with light

of l eaking sensitive information to wickileaks, a hero. he's accused of giving wickileaks a video showing an army attack where 11 civilians were killed in baghdad. he is in prison. he faces 52 years in prison if convicted. the council is expected to vote on the meeting next tuesday on whether to declare support for manning. there is no word from former vice president dick cheney regarding the new bribery c harges against him. nigerian investigators say they filed the charges against cheney and nine other people connected to halliburton. arcticking them of -- accusing them of bribes. the bribes allegedly mounted to $180 million between 1994 and 2004. thenny's lawyer has said in the past there is no reason to suspect his client is guilty. in just about one hour, the

santa cruz county jail escapee accused of assaulting a s heriff's deputy is expected to appear in court. 29 criminal charges have been filed against maurice ainsworth. he was the target of a massive five-hour manhunt. police say he faked a shoulder injury and then overpowered a female deputy at the jail. he faces attempted murder, false imprisonment and assault. 7:17. in washington, d.c., some congressional democrats are fighting mad at president obama. ktvu's alison burns joining us live now and tells us that some of them are using some pretty harsh language as they react to that tax cut deal worked out with the republicans. >> good morning, allison. >> reporter: good morning to y ou, dave. that's right. one democrat called it a bad deal that was not skillfully negotiated. but new this morning, one of president obama's top aide is

there was a take-over robbery at a mcdonald's and kraig debro is there with more. >> reporter: we're not sure if the employee was hit by the assailant or robber. behind me, the crime scene van just arrived here. inside the restaurant, a s prink -- the store is closed. it was supposed to open at 6:00. and this happened at 5:30. we saw one of the of the -- we saw one of the employees inside. paramedics are looking at the scalp to see if you can get a close look at what happened to the head. it didn't appear to have any stitches but later on we saw him with an ice pack on his head. then about a half hour ago, we took some pictures inside the store. some of the employees looked very worried and concerned and perhaps still frightened over what happened this morning.

ews. a store security camera may provide some very critical clues in the dragging death of an antioch woman. the 51-year-old woman is behind bars in the contra costa county jail. investigators say he's con physicalled to the gruesome k illing of shelley baker -- shelley baker early yesterday morning. they say he intentionally d ragged the homeless woman to her death after a heated argument inside his pickup t ruck. >> she exits the vehicle. you can see the dispute h appening. it looks like some of her property is being either pulled or thrown out of the vehicle. police say store surveillance video clearly shows that h orrifying scene as it happened but authorities are not release the video because of concerns that could affect the trial. this very same man -- and later on, antioch's m ayor plans to meet with police and community leaders to talk about a disturbing rise in

violent crime. yesterday's dragging death was one of two homicides in two days in antioch. along with a pair of shootings that injured two men. these latest crimes at -- these latest crimes come at the end of a very violent year. list in rohnert park plan to check the cell phone records of a driver that hit and killed ad to her in a crosswalk. 2-year-old callie murrey died ap her mother was severely injured when a car hit them last wednesday. police believe the 18-year-old driver was using her phone at the time of the crash. officers were unable to find a headset in the driver's car that would have allowed her to drive hands free. a 62-year-old woman is facing dui charges after a wild ride in downtown menlo park. it all began in a wall green's parking lot on santa cruz a venue. police say while backing out, margaret brill hit a parked car

sending it into another parked car. a man was pinned between the cars but he's expected to be okay. brill allegedly sped off in her mercedes and took off about before hitting two trees. she's now in jail. if no deal is reached in six months, at this point, the

land will become part of san jose. sal says they are not having fun around the bay bridge this morning. >> it seems to be getting a little bit better. the bridge traffic itself is okay. let's move along and take a look at the commute here on 880 northbound and southbound. that traffic is moving along okay here in oakland but in hayward and union city. we have slow traffic on the nimitz. southbound 808 at fremont they are still clearing that a ccident. contra costa county it should -- if you are driving from antioch and driving to concord, most of it is all slow. sometimes these commutes are only slow in antioch or

taking a live look at the big board on wall street, the stocks are micked -- are mixed. investors weak the tax cut proposal by president obama and republicans, obviously good for consumers and more money 234 their -- in their paychecks. it's also adding to the deficit. right now, the dow is down 23. nasdaq, down 4. s&p, down 3.5. a private funeral is planned this weekend for elizabeth edwards. she lost her long battle with breast cancer yesterday. samantha hayes joins us from north carolina now and a look at her political life in the spotlight. >> reporter: chapel hill has been nome for the edwards' family for quite sometime here. they are well known.

elizabeth and john met while they were in law school at chapel hill many years ago. this furniture shop was opened up by elizabeth edwards not that long ago. this is the area that friends and family are gathering. surrounded by her family, 61- year-old elizabeth edwards died tuesday morning after a long battle with cancer. in one of her last interviews, edwards' spoke to cnn's larry king in june about her struggle with the disease. >> sometimes the treatment gets you down but the disease is not getting me down. >> reporter: she was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 after her husband john edwards lost his bid for the vice presidency. it would not be the last time personal sufferinger enter t wined. the disease returned several years later in 2007, just as the couple began gearing up for another run at the white house. friends who knew her marveled

at her resilience. >> she is a woman who had multiple setbacks with so much grace, starting with the death of her son, her 16-year-old son, in a car accident, going on to the -- to the progression of the disease and finally john e dwards' very public affair which produced a child. >> reporter: a a statement released by the family on m onday, said cancer treatments were no longer effective for edwards and she was surrounded by her family, including husband john, the two legally separated in january. >> how good that he was at her bedside because that showed -- because they shared 33 years of marriage and they shared so m uch. >> the funeral is expected to be this weekend. more details are forthcoming from the family. i'm samantha hayes, dave, back to you. >> thank you. 7:47. well, according to a new w

a court hear something set for this morning for a parolee accused of killing a san francisco woman inside her russian hill apartment. investigators say gary scott holland posed as a utility worker to get access to the woman's apartment back on october 29th. he's pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, attempted rape, robbery and burglary. today's hearing is on the status of evidence to be released to the defense. a $50,000 reward is being offered by governor short is to help solve -- governor schwarzenegger is to help solve the murder of a woman who was sexually assaulted 2004 years ago. she left behind an 8-year-old daughter. it is 7:53. in about an hour, mayor gavin

newsom will be in san francisco for his final project homeless connect event. he started the project to help people get food, housing assistance, all under one roof. the new program will start in february. the medical bills for a hero dog in hero -- in hayward have all been paid thanks for donations from the community. diamond the pit bull suffered severe burns from an apartment fire. diamond woke the family up by barking and is credited with saving interest lives. the donations poured in to cover diamonds's treatment which was supposed to be over $6800. doctors are noticing a troubling trend. they are seeing kids who are starting or smoking nutmeg.

investigators are busy now searching for clues at a mcdonald's restaurant that was the scene of a violent takeover robbery this morning. it happened on san pablo avenue in berkeley shortly before 5:30. kraigdebro-- kraig debro is there now. i know there are new developments. just got off the phone with

police. there was one minor injury and we saw the paramedics treating employ es. later on in the morning when w e -- we looked in the window, we could see the employees l ooked worried or terrified. police say around 5:30 this morning a man with a gun walked into the mcdonald's. at gunpoint, he told those people to go inside a freezer or refrigerator. he said do not come out. so he got the crash and -- cash and he left the store and the employees came out afterward. he had a hasty exit. this is what we saw at the back of the restaurant. we walked around back, see a

trail of money leading from that restaurant out into the street. a couple of ones, a ten, a twenty back there. not a lot of money. police are not able to tell me how much money the robber got away with. the police -- the thief was w earing a ski mask during the commission of this robbery. they also could not say which direction the thief went. so recapping, one injury, a robbery, a suspect with a gun tells the employees to get in the freezer -- freezer and not to leave until he does. that's when they all came out. police are still in the restaurant. crime scene unit is on the scene right now, around back trying to pick up some of the money that was left out there and maybe get a fingerprint or two off of it. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 n ews. >> thank you. this morning, berkeley police are searching for s uspects in the series of street robberies. the two most recent ones h

teacher at kaiser elementary school. he's not happy about the situation, is he? >> reporter: no. kaiser is still without heat. we followed that fifth grade teacher at thstart of his day. tori, you're right. he's still very frustrated this morning because teachers don't know when the heat will be f ixed. at last check, 19 schools within the oakland unified school district were without heat like kaiser elementary. the district says the loss of heat is tried to a problem which needs parts to fix. the district says when they t ried turning back on the heat when students came back to school, some of the older equipment would not work. to make matters worse, the district only had five heating technicians after they let go after the -- half of the technicians. some of the teachers are hoping this issue pushes parents to hold the school district

dozens of victims of september's pipeline disaster in san bruno. the director outraged many when he defended pg&e's decision back in 2008 to reprioritize $ 5 million received from customers. that money was initially slated to repair part of the pipeline that runs near the san bruno disaster zone. in the meantime, pg&e says the explosion that has killed -- destroyed a house and nearly killed a man, they say it's not pg&e's fault. oakland police officers believe a natural gas explosion t riggered the blast. the man who was living in the home flipped on the light switch and triggered this. he's in critical condition with 80 -- with burns over 80% of his

body. now, jerry brown says he lek nices the budget problems facing him. he told lawmakers to be ready to get out of their comfort zone and tackle the ongoing budget deficit. he was unemployed but not for long. santa clause has a new gig. john toomey made international news when he got sacked from his job in union square. the firing came after an older couple complained about a joke he has been telling for years. he's already landed a new job at lucky o duel's. it pays twice as much as macy's and he can tell as many jokes as he wishes. sal's not saying ho ho ho about our commute this morning.

>> reporter: good morning. this has been the scene, wet roads and slow traffic. you've been in this kind of traffic before and you know it does this and it kind of moves along at a rety decent clip and then someone slows down and someone stops. it becomes kind of a parking lot out here. that's what causes these fender- benders out here. you look away for a second and then you see red lights in front of you. so serb -- so certainly at this point, things are moving along. this slows down pretty quickly. it can be dangerous out here. if you are headed out here, the situation is gonna be the same across the bay area. just remember to give yourself a little extra time so you don't run into trouble on the roadway. we've certainly seen slides and minor accidents that will mess up your commute. a little extra time today and you will get to work just fine. claudine wong, ktvu channel 2

news. >> okay. thank you. 8:32. the store security camera may provide some very critical clues about the dragging death of an antioch woman. the 51-year-old is in jail in the contra costa county jail. investigators say he confessed to the gruesome killing of shelley baker early yesterday morning. they say he intentionally d ragged the homeless woman to her death after a heated argument inside of his pickup truck. >> she exits the vehicle. the-- you can see the dispute happening. it looks like some of her propty is being either pulled or thrown out of the vehicle. >> now, police are saying a store surveillance video clearly shows that horrifying scene. but authorities are not r eleasing the video because of concerns that may affect an u pcoming trial. the same man spent six months in jail after an assault with a deadly weapon conviction in 1994 -- in 1994. the mayor of antioch later on today plant to meet with police and community leaders to

talk about a disturbing rise in violent crime there. yesterday adragging death case was one of two -- yesterday's dragging death case was one of two homicides in antioch along with a pair of shootings that injured two men. these latest crimes come at the end of a very violent year. antioch has had ten homicides this year. there were five in 2009. police in rohnert park plan to check the cell phone records of a drive irwho chit and killed a driver in a crosswalk. the girl died and her mother was severely injured when the car hit them last wednesday. police believe the 18-year-old driver was using her phone at the time of the crash. now, the driver could face charges if police determine she was on her cell phone during that time. a 62-year-old atherton woman is facing dui charges after a wild ride if -- wild ride in d

owntown. police say while backing out, margaret brill hit a parked car sending it into another parked car. a man was pinned between the two cars but he's expected to be okay. brill allegedly sped off in her mercedes and hit two more cars before slamming into a tree. she was taken to jail. 8:34. the registered sex offender who is accused of sexually a ssaulting a 2-year-old girl inside of a store heads back to court this morning. eugene ramos is expected to enter a plea when he appears before a judge at 9:00 a.m. ramos is accused of assaulting that girl at a union city dollar tree store one week ago today. investigators say the attack happened while her grandmother and her aunt were shopping in the very next aisle. and pleasant hill police are looking for information and possibly other victims of an accused child molester. they started a tipline on thomas jewel. the 53-year-old former juvenile hall counselor has been charged

san francisco mayor gavin newsom will kick off his final project homeless connect event in san francisco. he started the project to help the homeless get food, housing, legal assistance as well as medical attention under one r oof. he plans to start a similar program that will offer daily services to the homeless. that new program begins in february. the community really came together to help a dog who saved a family from a fire in hayward. darryl stein's pit bull named diamond suffered severe burns back in october in an apartment fire. it was diamond that woke up the family by parking and is c redited for saving their lives. well, the dog recovered but whether stein, the owner, was faced with more than -- m r.

stein, the owner, was faced with more than $5600 in medical medical bills. the bills have been paid off with donations from members of the community. doctors say kids are smoking or snorting a common spice to get a cheap high. nutmeg contains an organic compound that if used used in high doses can give you a buzz. a florida doctor says at least two deaths have been attributed to overdose. in august, more than 5 00 million eggs were recalled by two iowa farms due to the salmonella. although the drop in sales was short-lived, some producers say it's convinced them to change their approach to food safety
