going to encourage me to ride my bike more. >> reporter: an estimated 800 bike trips will be made through the tunnel every year. >> i don't care how young and strong you are, if you have to go through these hills or go east francis drake every day to go to work and go back home again, it gets pretty old. >> reporter: a couple of hundred bicyclists are expected tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 down at the larksburg landing end. that is when the gates are unlocked. live in san rafael, jim vargas, ktvu news. a health advisory has now been lifted near the tesoro refinery. tesoro says an electrical switching station caught fire near martinez and concord. the refinery had to shut down processing units and burn the excess fuel through it's flairs. one employee suffered a minor burn putting out the fire, contra costa county warned people with respiratory problems to take precaution. >> we saw the air district and

got air samples, we could see no negative air impact. >> tesoro blamed a preous outage on pg & e. the cause of today's outage is not yet known. ktvu's john sasaki in union city with more on what was a very close call. >> reporter: late last night, two friends were working on this car when out of nowhere three masked men walked up and demanded their money. >> they started punching my friend. and then my friend ran inside and they cornered me over here. and they started beating me up. >> reporter: fearing for their safety, the friends who call themselves brother didn't want their faces or names on tv. >> i showed them i didn't have

anything. i pulled out my pockets. he hit me in the face and i tried to push him off, that's when he stabbed me twice. >> reporter: he showed us his wounds. >> i am just glad my brother ran inside, because the babies were inside. >> i know when the gun went off, they ran. >> reporter: you think any of them was hit? >> we don't know that. which is why we put requests out to hospitals to let us know if anyone comes in with injuries. >> reporter: but the attack was only part of the story. >> i felt we were being treated as criminals, or suspects rather than victims. >> reporter: police secured a warrant to search the home and finding nothing. >> i was the one that got stabbed and they flipped all my beds over and all that. i wasn't too happy about that. >> reporter: i just talked with union city police and they said that it would have been quicker

if the brothers had agreed to the search. live in union city, john sasaki. a man is hospitalized tonight with life threatening injuries after he was attacked by four men. it happened about 1: 1:30. the suspects followed the 27- year-old unnamed victim from a bar then attacked him. he was stabbed more than once and is now being treated at san francisco general hospital at this point, no arrests have been made. the family of a young man who was killed two years ago at golden gate park is hoping to bring renewed attention to the unsolved murder. >> they took my son's murder and got away with it.

>> reporter: evans mother hired two private investigators. they say they've been in contact with someone giving them information. in the east bay, a search is being intensified to search for robert lichtenstein. he was last seen when he went out for his regular walk. volunteers posted fliers in the area. they've also checked hospitals and shelter for any signs of the missing man. the same one that was targeted less than a week ago. investigators say a man held up the quiznos sandwich shop. now they are trying to determine if it's connected to an attempted robbery at a near

by panda express last sunday night. the suspect in the quiznos robbery matches the description of the suspect in the panda express robbery. ktvu's robert handa joins us live from a marijuana club that would normally be open for business right now. >> reporter: gasia, we are outside one of the medical marijuana dispensaries that was raided. as you can see it was supposed to be closing in about an hour, instead it's been shut down indefinitely. two medileaf collectives were shut down by raids conducted by a santa clara task force known as cset. officers raided the facility around noon, arrested two workers and hauled away bags from inside that workers said contained marijuana, computer equipment and records.

it is the latest in a series of raids by cset. >> i don't understand why they are picking on us right now. there's so many other violent crimes and people that need to be off the streets and they are targeting us. >> reporter: medileaf members say clubs are being extra careful because san jose is working on a new law to regulate clubs. >> i genuinely don't understand how a dispensary following every letter of the law can be closed down like this. >> well it's closed while we're here. it's up to them if they want to choose to reopen. >> that's ridiculous, that goes to show you that they have no justification for these raids. >> reporter: some patients are scared about losing access to medical marijuana. >> i use it for spasms, i am on

major pain. i use a lot of narcotics, that i was able to get off of because of medical marijuana. >> reporter: live in san jose, robert handa, ktvu channel 2 news. a controversial anti bullying program will remain mandatory in vallejo schools despite opposition by some parents. the vallejo city school district parents heard opponents. the first hearing was likely the last today in governor arnold schwarzenegger steps to cut the state's massive deficit. both the assembly and senate budget economies adjourned without taking action and indicated they do not plan to meet again before january.

economy is going on. if all goes according to plan, motorists should be able to drive across the new span in 2013. that's six months earlier than expected. california's population is growing but slowly during this economic downturn. the state department of finance says california added just 350,000 new residents from july 2009 to july of this year. that's an increase of less than 1%. southern california counties saw more than half of the increase. mostly residents were babies born in the state. the salvation army in antioch is making a desperate plea tonight for toy donations ahead of the christmas holiday. it says it only has 34 toys out of the 1,300 it needs to collect before christmas. to make matters everyone worse, the number of families needing help is higher by about 30%. if you have toys or cash you can donate, you can drop them off at the salvation army offices in antioch. you can also contribute online, and we have a link holiday

authorities have burned down a home in suburban san diego that was filled with explosives. near by residents were evacuated. fishes say they had no choice but to burn the home to the ground. the home was being rented by a man who stockpiled explosives. a deer caucus was discovered this morning at a belmont middle school. the apparent victim of a hungry mountain lion. it's a stark reminder of just how close we live to the danger animal. mountain lion sightings have doubled this year. >> reporter: late this afternoon, belmont police announced that they found the remains of a deer here at

ralston middle school earlier today. it was located in a field just behind these basketball courts here. that field backed up to water log lake hiking area. we just spoke to the principal, she says they found several paw prints, and experts say they were bloody paw prints of a mom and a baby cub then they found the deer remains. puma sightings in the country have risen sharply. >> reporter: there were three mountain lion sightings last month alone. an area popular with equestrians. >> i have never seen a mountain lion, but there's a lady who gives trail rides who says she's seen them a couple of different times. no bad experiences just quick chance. >> reporter: there have been 35 sightings this year compared to 14 last year. >> the western edge of san

mateo, that area has a few reports also. the majority are in the green belt of the coastal hills. >> reporter: the department of fish and game says about 90% of sightings are never verified. and more sightings doesn't mean more pumas. it estimates 4,800 wild cougars roam california. >> we believe that the number of mountain lions has been gradually increasing for 14 years as well as a decrease in deer population. >> reporter: deer are the primary prey of mountain lions, and attacks on human are rare. only 14 verified since 1990. six of those deadly. experts warn people not to hike alone. >> i hike alone every day. >> reporter: does it concern you. >> it actually doesn't but i carry a knife sometimes and i should get some of that pepper spray stuff. >> reporter: an alert has gone out to student, parents and neighbors in this area. again the principal in the last half hour says she's concerned

just barely showing up. some of this is barely hitting the ground. and the real rain if there is much at all would be in the bay sector. the ground is wet, társ it's going to get a little cooler. the temperature now, the dewpoints are at 50 degrees, or 50 degrees, so once the temperature of 50 degrees is met you're going to get fog formation. that's easy. how hard is it going to get to 50 degrees in santa rosa or napa? easy. it'll work it's way into the bay inland valleys. here's cloud cover moving through. that changes everything. it makes your weekends about as nice as we've seen around here for a long time. we haven't had a weekend free of rain, cold or wind in a while. this weekend will be, sunday

will be the warmest day with highs maybe 71, 72 down to morgan hill. it might be a little high but upper 60s. talk about the fog in the valley. i think a dense fog advisory will show up maybe tomorrow morning out toward davis. out in that area, we'll watch that. i think again saturday and sunday morning you will probably get one for sure out there in the big valley. we might everyone see dense fog advisory around here. fog is a tough one. how it extends to that is tough to figure out on how widely extended it'll be. we'll watch it. tonight at 10:00 i'll have a better idea. 61 tomorrow in concord and 63 in san jose. the air quality is good. looks like a really nice weekend. the drive, morning and afternoon, the only thing you have to worry about is the fog. lots of rain in the reservoirs, lots of snow in the mountains. like crazy amounts of snow in the mountains. we are doing good. we have a little rain coming back on tuesday. a colder day that will bring

economists say the increased demand in asian and latin america for computers is behind this increase. >> there is encouraging news today about unemployment, a new government report shows applications for jobless benefits have dropped to the second lowest level this year. the labor department says first time claims fell by 17,000 to a seasonally adjusted 421,000 last week. analysts say it's a sign that customers are creating more jobs.
