those stories and next -- those stories and more next on the ktvu channel 2 news at noon. good afternoon. topping our news, san rafael police are not giving up the search for the killer after young woman sexually assaulted and strangled two years ago and now a large reward has been added to help solve the case. tara moriarty has more. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. police decided to hold their press conference here at the actual crime scene, where ashley ymauchi's body was found. if you look behind me, it's right there where the brown trash can is. they are hoping that a $50,000 from governor schwarzenegger's office will generate some r enewed interest in this case. detectives say tomorrow, two years ago tomorrow, ashley was strangled. they won't say how.

that's something only the killer and the victim knows. but they found her behind the fourth street tavern in downtown san rafael. police say she had been sexually assaulted and died of asphyxiation. she was last seen arrive six hours before leaving the tavern to the back room. >> we see -- we recently went to chicago to interview a suspect. even though that person was not arrested, he's not ruled out as a suspect. >> reporter: another person not ruled out as a suspect, ashley's baby's father. >> it's been devastating, man. it's hard looking at my child sometimes to know someone would do this torques take my child's mother -- do this, to take my

child's mother away. not a day goes by that don't miss her. >> hope to have the person who did this come toward and do the right thing. >> reporter: as far pass dna evidence goes, police have sent out more than 50 pieces to labs throughout california but all have come back inconclusive. but friends and family say they really hope this renewed reward money, $50,000, will compel somebody to come forward and bring justice to ashley's homicide. we're live here in san rafael, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. we're getting the aftermath of a horrifying crime at a san leandro walmart store. this is the suspect, shortly after he was tackled by a waste management driver. he's accused of sexually

molesting an 8-year-old inside the store last week. he's scheduled to enter a plea today. berkeley police have a rrested nine people in the past few days. the suspects may be connected to a string of robberies in the northern part of that city. one of the suspects was caught leaving the area north of the university right after a robbery occurred. several incidents have happened in that area in the last month. people we've talked to say they are happy to hear the news. >> it just makes us safer. gotta get these kids in school and get the fies -- and get these guys off the street. the fbi will now be investigating the shooting death of derrick jones. he was shot by oakland police officers early last month. kraig debro explains how the public helped force oakland's police chief to ask for the

outside investigation. >> reporter: police chief anthony batts would not talk to us about having this death investigated. >> the fbi has been contacted today, i've asked them to also open up a civil rights investigation. >> reporter: we were unable to get jones' family reaction to the announcement, but the f amily's attorney says the request is a step in the right direction. >> i think that's a great idea. that thud have been done at the out-- that should have been done at the outside. there's always the issue of internal affairs in a police shooting. >> reporter: derrick jones was shot and killed guy two oakland police officers on the evening of september 9th. the shooting took place just yards from jones' barbershop. the officer say he shot -- they shot jones because he was r eaching for something in his pants. his mother, nelly, read and a

when police have held one of their own responsible for s hooting a suspect. in oakland, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. caltrans is warning drivers crossing the bay bridge to keep their eyes on the road this w eek. that's because crews are doing some heavy lifting that could create a distraction. right now, contractors are installing the third level of the tower needed to complete the new eastern span of the bridge. these are live pictures of some of that work. crews will be there around the clock to finish but they know the weather may give them some trouble. >> safety is gonna be a priority on this. wind is one of the biggest challenges for us. so we expect to be slowed down a little bit in the middle of it. >> the fourth and final tier of the tower will be installed early next year once the pieces arrive from kline gnaw. then the rest of the -- from china and then the rest of the cables will be installed to

hold the bridge in place. the $le 8 -- the $ 858 billion deal goes to the house, the president wants them to approve this without changes "as soon as possible." the bill would extend the b ush- era tax cuts for two more years. and the tax bill has a lot of breaks for special interests. there's a $11 billion in energy tax breaks including tax credits for biodiesel and e nergy-efficient homes. taxpayers will also get breaks including an adoption tax credit and education credit. right now, president obama is hosting his largest meeting ever with the heads of 20 u.s. companies. >> i am looking forward to g etting good ideas from them. i'm definitely gonna talk to them about how we can get more

please don't -- please d on't. please don't. we just learned a few hours ago that the ex-convict that held up a school board meeting had been planning for some time to do it. he had yesterday's date circled on the calendar. he walked in and started to complain about his wife being fired. he shot but all of his bullets missed targets. >> nothing short of a miracle that god protected us. >> a security guard shot duke.

and we we have a just learned that his wife did lose her job for u nspecified reasons. the mount diablo school district will close seven schools to help with the budget. the closure is a concern for some parents. >> it means my children have to -- have to do -- very to go to a school much farther and i don't know how i'm gonna do it. i'm working. i'm a single mom. some antioch city employees could lose their jobs. they had concession but those expire next month which would add money back in the budget.

if they continue the c oncessionses that would avoid the need for job cuts. investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that seriously damaged an oakland home. it broke out just before 6:30 a.m. at a home on santa ray avenue which is not far from lake merritt. firefighters were able to keep it from spreading to neighboring homes. they say it started at the rear of the house on the second f loor. it damaged two back bedrooms, which the homeowner uses as a sewing room and an officer. >> opened the door and it was just solid black inside. i tried to reach anything. i couldn't see -- see one foot inside the room. >> no one was injured. but the damage is extensive. investigators say the home is not a total loss. most of the damage was to the roof and attic area. sanfrancisco firefighters are seeming up -- teaming up with st. francis's hospital burn unit to encourage people to take care of their christmas decorations. they set a christmas tree on fire to show how quickly those dried branches and deck l

akeses -- decorations can go up in flames. fire officials point out that each year holiday season fires claim the lives of over 400 americans and injure 1600 more and cause over $990 million in damage. they blame dried out trees, o verloaded extension cords and unattended candles. two fairfield sisters whose children died in a fire last spring will be back in court today to remember -- to learn if they have to stand trial. investigators say the two women left their four children alone in a home with burning candles. a lead investigator in the case tead -- touched that the women gave conflicting accounts about why their children had been left alone and for how long. all of the children died in the fire. >> the fact that they had four fire death, now they are -- fire deaths, now they are trying to fit that into holding someone accountable.

>> investigators say it's still unclear whether the fire was accidental or intentional. the women face involuntary manslaughter and child e ndangerment charges. we've just learn learn -- learned that a second person has died in the shooting in sacramento that claimed the life of a young mother. investigators say a 20-year-old man died from a chest wound. yesterday, monique nelson was hit by a stray bullet at a strip mall. police say at least one gunman walked into a barbershop and the men exchanged fire inside and it spilled into the parking lot. investigators say nelson was p utting her son into her suv when the bullet hit her, the child was not hurt. in less than an hour, you can get a chance to see the world series trophy, it just arrived a short time ago at san f rancisco's city hall. it will be dison play for two -- on display for two hours and they were also going to to be make lag they called a major

racoons. alameda police say since june they've received report -- report of seven raccoon attacks on both people and animals. still ahead -- major action against a crib responsible for dozens of deaths. and the lawsuit against mcdonald's. what a health group says the chain is doing by putting toys in happy meals.

mcdonald's is spacing a lawsuit. it was filed in san francisco this morning. a health group and a sacramento woman claimed mcdonald's is violating consumer protection laws by using toys to market u nhealthy -- unhealthy meals to young children. sanfrancisco recently became the first city to prohibit f ast-food reaurants with kids meal who don't mean health guidelines. there was a ban on the cribs that have caused the deaths of 30 infants and toddlers, the dropside can drop and create a dangerous gap between the mattress and side rail where the baby can get caught. coming up on the news at 5:00, the sun is shining around much of the bay area today. but the long-range forecast calls for rain off and on all the way to new year's day.
