morning news. good morning. thank you for joining us on this thursday december 16th. i'm pam cook. >> and good morning. i'm dave clark. let's check weather and traffic. here's steve. thank you very much. we have clear skies except for some patchy fog. it's cold out there. temperatures in the 30s for many. in fact a few below freezing. we'll end up with mostly sunny skies. higher clouds will drift in later on today in advance of the rain that will show up on friday. today low to mid-50s. now here's sal. steve, right now westbound 8o is moving along okay as you head to the macairture maze. traffic looks good at the bay bridge toll plaza as you get into the ty. 6:00, let's go back to the desk. thank you. this morning police are still out there searching for suspects in the fatal stabbing of a star football player from newark high school. ktvu's paul chambers just spoke to a grieving family member. paul is joining us now with an update on what you found out. paul. >> reporter: good morning,

dave. now 17-year-old was stabbed right here at this bus stop here as he was waiting for his ride home. now we can come down here you can see there is a candle light vigil. grieving family members just came up and came to pay their respects. >> me and my husband you know he just wanted to come by and see the exact spot where you know my nephew got -- this happened. >> reporter: now according to his aunt and uncle the family jussive moved here in april. his aunt died just this past may. he was a star line backer in high school. his aunt died in may. last night his mother spoke exclusively with ktvu. she spoke about a party between justice and two outsiders. she thinks this may have led to her son's death. >> he was beating up a cheerleader. my son was the one who jumped

in and stopped him from beating her up. i think this is how all these things started. >> reporter: now according to the mother she got into a car accident yesterday which made her late picking him up from football practice. so while he waited at the bus stop for a ride, witnesses told police two men assaulted him. shortly after justice called his girlfriend and he later died here on the street. justice's mother says he was devoted to his family and was not involved in any trouble. she hopes those responsible will come forward. the only description newark police are releasing at this time about the two men seen running away is that they were dressed in black clothing and a hoody sweatshirt. if you know anything about this case, you're asked to call police. we can come back here live once again you can see there is a vigil out here. people have come out throughout the morning to pay their respects, taking pictures here and just talking about a man they said a young man who had a bright future who planned to go to college. of course we will stay on top of this and later in the morning we plan to talk to some students, his fellow

classmates. we'll bring that to you. live in newark, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. also this morning san francisco police are looking for the cause of a frightening overnight crash at a location well-known to bay area music lovers. it happened at about 10:00 last night at the now closed virgin megastore. police say a driver somehow lost control of his car and smashed through the front windows of the abandoned building at market and stockton. the crash caused significant damage. it's still not clear though if anyone was hurt. san francisco police are also investigating another scary crash that happened hours earlier. investigators say a fast moving car flew off interstate 280 and slam into a home on rumble avenue in the city's per toll will neighborhood. the driver suffered serious injuries. no one in the home was hurt. and a novato woman and her dog are recovering from minor injuries this morning after being attacked by two labradors. the off leash dogs were

captured by the marin humane society yesterday morning. they say the dogs attacked the woman's jack russell terrier and then bit her face and leg when she tried to intervene. the dogs ran away after someone scared them off. officers are still trying to identify the retrievers' owner who was not there during the attack. time now 6:03. you've heard steve paulson, several winter storms packing strong winds and rain are expected to pound the bay area starting tomorrow. local cities are getting ready by offering sandbags. now in san carlos you can pick up sandbags at the corporation yard. if you live in men lo park, sandbags will be available at burgesses park. now the rain could cause problems in the higher elevations. santa cruz mountains possibly getting as much as ten inches of rain. again, steve paulson, our meteorologist, is in the weather center now tracking the storm. he'll have more on this approaching storm in just a couple minutes.

well, construction workers on the bay bridge hope the weather will cooperate as they work around the clock to finish the tow effort of the new eastern span. right now they are lifting four massive steel columns into place on the self-anchored suspension tower. crews started the job yet, one day earlier than originally planned. one day early for safety reasons. they say the storm coming in could make a big job already difficult than it already is. >> the rain isn't so much of a challenge as wind is because even though these things weigh 551-tons, when you get them up there on strands, the steel can catch wind like a sail. >> cal tran says if the weather cooperates, workers will be able to finish over the next four days. there will be one more level after this one put into place after the pieces arrive in february. cal tran hopes to have the bridge open to traffic by the end of 2013. we have a special bay bridge section on our website at ktvu.com. so you can keep track of all

the construction progress. it's good stuff. sal, is everyone cooperating with you by the toll plaza? >> yes, they are. as a matter of fact off to a good start on this thursday. we haven't had a lot to talk about which is good. we're not looking for problems. we're just looking for it to be nice. and you can see it's still very nice. at some point during this month, i'm not exactly sure when, we're going to see a day when it's obvious people are going to be not going as we get closer to the holiday. some schools will be out. i don't know if it's going to be to be, but it will be at some point. this is a look at westbound 92 the san mateo bridge. that traffic tarts moving well. as a matter of fact, by next week as we are -- next week we'll be in the christmas week, we'll start seeing much lighter days. this is a look at the san mateo bridge and this is a look at commute from fairfield to vallejo. the traffic looks good across the bridge where there's a little bit of fog -- or this fog -- let me start that again. there's a fog advisory for dense fog on the bridge issued by the chp. once you get to the fairfield

area though, there are no major problems. now at 6:06, let's go to steve. sal, we have mostly clear skies and it's cold out there. temperatures near 30. in fact, fairfield's in there. antioch and livermore not far away. napa, santa rosa, lot offense 30s. something we haven't had really since november. the pattern has been much milder in november. but this morning we start off very cold and thick fog out there. there's not a lot. not widespread but there are some areas where visibility is not that good. so clear and cold. patchy fog, 30s to start. near 40 by the coast. we'll have mostly sunny skies. higher clouds coming in this afternoon. highs mid-50s. san raphael mostly sunny starting off cold with 54 for a high under mostly sunny skies. clouds coming in late. the clouds that we had from about 36 hours ago, well, yesterday morning, went south. and then coming in behind that colder drier air but already the leading edge of the higher clouds are right there. that will start to work in

tomorrow. now the system coming in tomorrow is really just overrunning what we call overrunning warmer lighter rain. the heavier rain won't show up until saturday. we have a day and a half, two days to go here. but that cold low will combine with moisture coming up from the hawaiian islands to give us a very active weekend. so cold to start. fog this morning. mostly sunny though. cloudy, mild on friday as we get a lot of cloud cover in here. then the rain returns and rain and wind. where it all shows up on the weekend is still to be determined. again, a difference of 50 miles in the atmosphere could mean heavy duty rain or just rain. so we'll ease into that for tomorrow. the sierra already the watches have been posted. it starts today. this afternoon. and goes into sunday. snow level around 5,000 to 5500 feet but it could fluctuate. they will measure the snow in feet after everything's said and done. but the system's getting closer. today at least we get a break. so starting off cold in the morning. 30s to 40s under mostly sunny

skies. we'll have at noon 40s, upper 40s to low 50s. and then everything higher clouds start to come in this afternoon. but temperatures stay in the 50s. so santa rosa 55, oakland 54, hayward 55. santa cruz 54. fremont also 54. five-day forecast at least mostly sunny today. light rain moves in friday. heavier rain moves in on the weekend. oh, boy. thanks, steve. this morning airlines say more people are flying, so guess what? that means you're going to pay more for your next airline ticket. ktvu channel 2 reporter kraig debro is at the oakland airport to tell us why and how much. good morning, kraig. >> reporter: good morning, pam. steve was right. it's cold out here this morning. we talked to one of the airlines or one of the airlines that was first to raise rate. they say it's a question of supply and demand. the more you pay, the more you demand the more you pay. we're at terminal 2 at oakland international airport this morning at one of the airlines that is raising its rates.

southwest airlines announced fare rates yesterday only after american airlines became the first in the market to do so. about every major airline says they'll raise air fares by $10 round trip for every night of 500 miles or more. the increase is actually $5 for 500 for a one way trip. most people we talk to say they like to return from where they came. the people we spoke to this morning about the increase say they're relieved the increase isn't greater. >> i don't think it's that bad. it could be worse. it really could. >> luckily on southwest you don't have to pay for baggage. that helps. >> reporter: now continental, delta, u.s. airways, alaska and about everyone else announced fair increases as well yesterday. coming up walk down to terminal 1 here at oakland international and talk to some fliers that take the airline that is do charge for bags to see if that extra $10 might influence their decision. live at oakland international. kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:10. the number of households getting the foreclosure notices

wikileaks founder julian assang. that means he will be released from jail. take a look at this video. this is outside the courthouse this morning in london where his supporters cheered when that judge issued that ruling. he was ordered released on bail tuesday. prosecutors wanted him to stay behind bars until his extradition hearing on january 11. he's wanted in sweden for questioning in a sex crimes investigation. now according to the new york times federal prosecutors are trying a new tactic now to build a criminal case against him for publishing the classified u.s. documents on wikileaks. the paper says prosecution -- prosecutors are looking into whether he encouraged or even helped the army private who's accused of down loading those classified file. then they could charge him as a conspirator in the leak not just as a recipient of documents. president obama is delivering a report this morning on the progress and challenges in the war in

afghanistan. but as ktvu's allison burns reports, there's still some questions looming about when that war will end. good morning, allison. >> reporter: good morning to you, pam. this review comes almost a year after president obama ordered that surge of 30,000 additional troops in afghanistan. and it lays out the goals for when the troops will come home. let's take a closer look here at some of the key points. the report says that the al qaeda leadership is at its weakest point since after the war started that the conditions are being sent to reduce troops in july of next year and for afghans to take total control security in 2014. but progress is fragile. president obama will deliver it in a few hours. he is not expected to to say how many troops will be leaving next summer. california senator barbara boxer wants president obama to stick to the time line. >> i also want to say is that

i'm working in every way i can to end this war in afghanistan. i support beginning to bring troops home in 2011. there's some talk it might be extended to another year. i don't support that. >> reporter: meanwhile a new washington post poll shows that support for the war is at an all time low. a record high 60% of americans now say the war in afghanistan is news , weather , not worth fighting. live in washington d.c., allison burns, ktvu channel 2 news. the fate of the military's don't ask don't tell policy is now up to the u.s. senate after the house approved a repeal of the policy yesterday. senator joe lieberman, a sponsor of the repeal measure, says he has enough votes. >> we've got not 60 but 61 members of the u.s. senate publicly committed to the repeal of don't ask don't tell. so all that will stop that repeal is a totally unacceptable refusal to bring

our measure up in a timely way. >> the bill now moves to the senate as a so-called privileged bill that streamlines the process for bringing it to a vote. time now 6:16. president obama's compromised tax deal comes up for a vote today in the house after being approved in the senate. the senate easily passed the bill that would extend the bush era tax cuts for all americans for two years. and some federal unemployment benefits for 13 months. house democratic leaders plan to pass the bill, but first they going to hold a vote on imposing a higher estate tax than the one negotiated by the president. meantime there's a new gallop poll out that shows the american people's assessment of congress has hit a new low. only 13% say they approve of the way congress does its job. the disapproval rating is the worst gallop poll they've measured in more than 30 years of tracking the job performance of congress. some san francisco workers will be getting a raise january

1st. the mayor has announced minimum wage will go up 13 cents. the san francisco law passed by voters requests annual rate adjustments based on the consumer price index. there was no hike in the minimum wage last year. time now 6:17. get you to where you need to go. sal, i know you're watching everything. how's the north bay? looking good so far. looking at highway 101 and 580 with the bridge coming in and out of marin county. we don't have any problem to report on highway 37 either. and 101 looks good all the way to the golden gate bridge. now if you're driving to the east bay any time soon 880 looks good. if you're driving northbound on the right heading up to downtown looks all right getting up to the jack london square area. when you get to the toll plaza we don't have a big delay. this is about the time the metering lights get turned on. so the next time we see this in a few minutes we might see a bigger crowd.

but for now it still looks okay. 6:18. let's go to steve. clear skies except for patchy fog. temperatures near freezing for some. low 30s for many. skies are clear though. we will have a sunny to mostly sunny day. so today if you need to get out and don't want to deal with any rain, this is it. because starting tomorrow we'll get light rain in here. heavier rain won't show up until the weekend. at least we have clear skies. bundle up. it is cold out there. temperatures starting in the 30s for many. so clear and cold in the morning. some patchy thick fog though. in fact visibility can drop to zero then all of a sudden you'll come out of that fog and you'll be clear. 30s to start. mostly sunny with higher clouds later on. leading edge of higher clouds tomorrow are getting closer. this all has to come together. big low, cold low in the gulf of alaska interacting with the moisture coming up from the hawaiian islands will play into our forecast. for now 33 concord, livermore, palo alto close at 34. san jose even at 37. mostly sunny today. a cold morning. patchy fog. highs though only in the 50s.

mid to low 50s. mid-50s at best for many. so 54 oakland, 55 hayward. 56 san jose. santa rosa 55. today's all right. mostly sunny f. you need to get out and workout or play tennis or whatever do it today because tomorrow we cloud it up. some light rain makes it and then heavier rain shows up on the weekend. thank you, steve. the number of homes receiving late notices and other paperwork related to foreclosures hit a five year low last month. reality track says foreclosures fell 20% in october and 14% compared to last year. some of the drops stem from delays as workers reviewed records and change how they start foreclosure proceedings. well, starting today best buy will start selling the smart phone from google and sam sung. it's the first phone to run google's ginger bread software and front and rear facing cameras. it will cost about $200 with a two year t mobile contract or $530 without a contract. this is the first time google

has sold its phones at best buy. time now 6:20. was it free speech or a distraction that has to be stopped? a new trial here in the bay area will decide a controversial case about a nazi salute. and it was once dubbed the murder capital of the country. but not anymore. the dramatic decrease in a crime in one bay area community. too long. if you're driving in the south bay this is a look at highway 247. traffic looks good here. more about the morning commute straight ahead.

good morning. we're checking the bay area bridges for you. and right now most of them look pretty good even the bay bridge which usually by now beginning to see a crowd has not yet. they're all looking good. all right. time now 6:24. with the wet weather on the way the south bay's largest homeless agency is increasing the amount of beds available in their shelters. ehc light builders say they're responding to a need as they've seen shelters in san jose, sunny vale and gill roy fill to capacity in recent weeks. they say 20,000 people experience homelessness every year in santa clara county. police in vacaville are investigating whether last

weekend's brutal attack on two children is connected to a fatal shoots last month. 13-year-old is charged with the crime which occurred while the two children were home alone. police have now learned the brother of those two children was arrested for supplying drugs to two people who were later found shot to death in a vacaville apartment. another man with no ties to the stabbing case is in custody for that killing. and a federal appeals court in san francisco ordered a new trial on a long running civil rights lawsuit. this case involves homeless activist robert. he claims his free speech rights were announced. the future trial was thrown out because his behavior was disruptive as the city council claims or because of his point of view. a sacramento mother has teamed up with a public

advocacy group to file a class action lawsuit targeting mcdonald's. the suit filed in state superior court in san francisco claim the ads unlawfully entice children into eating food that can do them harm. the mother along with the center for science in the public interest is asking the court to order mcdonald's to stop using toys to market happy meals. >> when it comes to children's meals that influencing their decisions about what they want to eat based on a familiar toy is problematic especially when you get to mcdonald's and the meal that's available is unhealthy. >> mcdonald's released a statement saying "we are proud of our happy meals and intend to vigorously defend our brand, our reputation and our food. we are confident that parents understand and appreciate that happy meals are a fun treat with quality right sized food choices for their children that can fit into a balanced diet ." time now 6:26.

new information coming out this morning that shows crime has dropped dramatically in east palo alto over the past two decades. east palo alto's crime rates was once so high it was called the murder capital of the country in 1992 with 42 homicides that year. well, there's a new uc berkeley study that shows that has changed with fewer than ten murders each year since then. this year there have been four. community activists are crediting the improvements to better relationships between the police and the residents. more people are heading to the airports again. and that means less cash in the wallets of all air travelers. >> reporter: i'm paul chambers live in newark where there's a candle light vigil in an area where a 17-year-old man was fatally stabbed. we'll have details coming up in this case. we're also keeping an eye on wall street. the opening bell is about to ring. pam will bring you all of the early stock numbers. seyo petose

football star. ktvu's paul chambers joins us now from newark with reaction from grieving family members. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning, pam. this is a tough time for the 17- year-old's family. i spoke with them a short while ago. they say they moved here recently in april. they lost their aunt in may in 2007 they lost his father. right here at this bus stop where he was stabbed if you pan down you can see there's a candle light memorial out here for him. last night he has mother spoke exclusively with ktvu. here's what she had to say. >> i just wish whoever did this to my son to come forward. he didn't do anything wrong. my son was a good son. >> reporter: according to her she got into a car accident which made her late for picking him up for football practice yesterday afternoon. he came to the bus stop to wait for a ride. that's when witnesses say two

men assaulted justice who according to his mother called his girlfriend after he was stabbed. she believes confrontation at a party recently involving two outsiders may have led to her son's death. >> he was beating up a cheerleader. so my son was the one who jumped in and stopped him from beating her up. i think this is how all this things started. >> reporter: now police say justice who was a star line backer for newark high died on the street. justice had plans to play college football. his mother says he was devote today his family and was not involved in any trouble. newark police would only say that the two males of unknown age were last seen running from the scene dressed in black clothing and a hooded sweatshirt. i put a call into newark police. we're waiting for them to give us a call back. hopefully we have new information on this. come back here live a candle light memorial. people have been coming out all morning to pay their respects. i think they'll do that all morning long. we will now move over to the high school to get additional

information from his classmates to see how they're feeling and coping this morning. we're live in newark, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2 news. time now 6:32. a man has died after he appeared to have a medical episode while being booked into the santa clara county jail. the sheriff's department says the 41-year-old man was arrested tuesday evening at a park where officers believe he was selling meth. as he was being booked into jail, officials say he started acting i radically. the man was rushed to the hospital. he was later pronounced dead. police are investigating whether he may have ingested meth at the time of his arrest. we are learning that the mother killed at a sacramento strip mall sacrificed her own life to save her son. investigators say the 30-year- old shielded her son's body as stray bullets flew around them tuesday afternoon. sheriff deputies later found her body draped over her 2-year- old son who was sitting strapped in his car seat. the toddler emerged from the horrifying scene unharmed. his mother was pronounced dead

at the scene. a second person has now died because of that gun battle. five others are wounded. police now have announced their first suspects. they say 24-year-old lonnie mitchell was one of at least four men involved in the shopping mall gun battle. take a look at his picture. he is still on the run this morning. time now 6:33. san francisco prosecutors plan to retry a man serving two life prison sentences and who a judge ruled wrongfully convicted. conly now 40 years old convicted of a 1989 double murder in the city's bayview district. earlier this week a san francisco judge rule that had a key witness lied on the stand when he testified he was not in a witness protection program. conly's attorney contends that witness was paid thousands of dollars and given a place to stay. that witness died two years ago. this morning search teams will go back out to the santa cruz mountains. they're looking for a missing man.

this man from pennsylvania. on saturday sheriff deputies found jonathan frank's car parked at big basin redwood state park. his family says the 57-year-old man was deeply depressed over marital as well as business troubles. investigators believe he may also be carrying a weapon. if you have any information about this, contact the authorities. well, expect to dig a little deeper in your pocket if you're planning to travel any time soon. the major airlines are increasing fares. ktvu channel 2 reporter kraig debro knows how much. and he is live at the oakland airport. he's been digging into this. kraig. >> reporter: yeah. digging a little deeper, right. just a little deeper. the increase isn't that bad, but the airline that started this fare increase across the board yesterday says it's a question of supply and demand. that means you demand more, they supply more and you pay more. behind me terminal 2 at oakland international airport this is the southwest terminal. they too are one of the airlines raising your rates.

terminal 1 to find out if the $10 might make a bit of a difference in their travel plans. reporting live from oakland international airport, kraig debro, ktvu channel 2 news. all right. time now 6:36. this morning muni has an important heads up for a lot of san francisco bus riders. today the ongoing construction on the temporary transbay terminal between main and beal streets enters a new phase. as a result muni is changing the stops for several bus lines. they'll have muni workers out at the effected locations and answer any commuter questions. but it's a heads up. now you know. all right. we understand it's getting crowded at the toll plaza. let's check in with sal. all right. , pam and dave, yes, it is right now traffic is going to be busy there. switch on the metering lights. it's about a five to seven minute delay because you have to wait at the metering lights of course. nothing too major right now. the weather is cooperating. it's good visibility here. in some areas though it will be a little bit foggy. so just be ware of that.

also this morning's commute looks pretty good if you are driving on southbound 680 heading to the south bay with no major problems. and if you're driving on the north bay fairfield, vallejo across the bridge there's a fog advisory for the bridge. parts of contra costa county have been fogged in. just be careful when you're driving there. 6:37. let's go to steve. sal, thank you. real quick a lot of you have weather apps on your phone. if you're in the east bay you might click that on and it might say flurries. that's not right. that comes out of concord's buchanan field they've been having problems with that. maybe fog, but not reporting any flurries. it is cold though. fairfield is 29 degrees. 32 in antioch. 31 santa rosa. that's from our observer kent in west santa rosa. napa 32. redwood city 34. mountainview 36. palo alto's 33. san mateo also at the 30s. 40s for san francisco.

antioch. and the measure to repeal the military's don't ask don't tell policy is now in the u.s. senate. that's after the house approved the repeal yesterday. one military scholar suggests the armed forces should maintain its don't ask don't tell strategy, but for religion. the contra costa times reports that the idea is from a marine corp university professor at a conference that's going on at uc berkeley that's focusing on the role that spirituality plays in the military. some participants have noted that the country's armed forces appear to be deeply religious, sometimes writing bible versus on guns or armored vehicle. some suggest that the displays could make it harder for soldiers in combat overall. well, storms are heading to the bay area just in time for the weekend as we've been talking about. and several cities are preparing by offering sandbags. ktvu's now in novato this morning. what's going on there, tara? >> reporter: you know temperatures have dipped near freezing up here.

and as you can see by my breath it is extremely cold. and if you take a look at this windshield, there's a bunch of frost here. so it is definitely chilly. and as early as tonight we could see a bunch of rain as well as strong winds. and according to officials out on the coast here in marin county, they have issued a warning saying that this storm could potentially knock down trees as winds whip up to 60 miles an hour. now in flood prone communities crews have been sweeping culverts and leaves so they don't clog storm drains. people preparing for the worst. they are filling up sandbags at local yards to prevent flooding and stocking up on rain gear, flashlights and batteries. according to forecasters the rain could last until tuesday potentially causing problems in higher elevations including the santa cruz mountains which could see as much as ten inches of rain. now forecasters are predicting as many as five inches of rain for most of the bay area. we will keep you posted and
