men responsible for a fatal stabbing. the victim was a young bay area football star. paul chambers spoke to a family member and joins us now with a update. >> reporter: good morning. we have moved to newark memorial high school. briefly before we move, i got a chance to talk to his mother to get clarification. students and staff members are arriving on campus. 17-year-old football star from newark was the person stabbed at bus stop yesterday afternoon. i just spoke with family member whose came to pay their respects. >> me and my husband, he wanted to see the exact spot where my nephew got -- where this happened. >> reporter: according to his aunt and uncle his father died

in 2007. he lost his up a aunt in may. his mother spoke with ktvu and spoke about a confrontation. >> they were beating up a cheerleader. my son was the one who jumped in and stopped them from beating her up. >> reporter: this morning his mother told me that a car accident on the bridge made her late picking up justice from the football practice yesterday. she says justice normally would wait for a car ride home. witnesses told police two men assaulted him as he waited. he called his girlfriend and later died on the street. his mother says he was devoted to his family and not involved in trouble. she hopes the people responsible will come forward. the only description is that they were dressed in black

he has been granted bail to get out of jail. the attorney says instead of house arrest assange will be under mansion arrest. assange is wanted in sweden for questioning in a sex crimes investigation. 6 antii don't antioch police officers received layoff notices. the police chief says the layoffs could be rescinded in the city works out a concession deal with the police union. last week antii don't care's mayor called an emergency meeting to discuss the rise in violent crime in the city including doubling of a rape this year. crime rate in east palo alto dropped. according to a new study the city has one of the highest levels of violent crime in the state. east palo alto police chief will discuss the study and initiatives tonight at 6:00 at city hall. 42 homicides were reported in

1992 in every year since east palo alto averaged fewer than ten. according to the study east palo alto has a higher percentage of violent crime compared to the state average. we are learning that a state inspector warned pge of safety risks 19 months before the san bruno explosion. the letter warned that persistent safety problems in gas distribution system were putting the public at risk. it suggested that relationship between regulators and pge leading up to the deadly september explosion was more contentious than top state officials portrayed. more homes have been destroyed. on tuesday the san bruno city council approved the demolition of 3 homes that have been yellow tagged. they were too damaged to occupy but not so damaged that they

required bulldozing. additional inspections determined they were so damaged it would cost more money to repair than replace them. the city will get $90,000 from pge to pay for the demolition. 38 homes have been destroyed. san francisco police are looking for the cause of a crash at a location well known to bay area music lovers. it happened around 10:00 last night at the now closed virgin mega store. a driver some how lost control of his car and smashed through the front windows at market and stockton. the crash caused significant damage it's not clear if anyone was hurt. let's check in with sal, a new crash? >> we have a crash on highway 4, highway 4 this time at a- street with a motorcycle and a car that got in to it. highway 4 traffic is slow even

report and as allison burns reports question are looming about when the war will end. >> reporter: most of the report is classified put the white house is releasing a summary and it says that troops can begin leaving as scheduled next summer. let's look here at some of the key points in this afghanistan policy review. it says al-qaeda leadership is at the weakest point that the conditions are set to reduce u.s. troops in july of next year, and for afghanistans to take total control of security in 2014. but the report says progress is fragile. president obama will deliver it in a few hours, he is not expected to say how many troops will be leaving next summer. critics like california senator barbara boxer are speaking out this week against the war calling on the president to stick to the timeline.

they want the cuts to be permanent. some san francisco workers will be getting a raise january 1st. the mayor announced the minimum wage will go up 13 cents to $9.92 an hour. san francisco law passed by voters requires annual rate adjustments based on the consumer price index. there was no hike in the city's minimum wage last year. thousands of san francisco school children will have to find a new way to go to school next year. the examiners reporting the school board voted to cut bus service by more than 50% to save money. it will cost the district $100,000 a year to run each yellow school bus. those cuts which affect 3300 elementary and middle school students will be phased in over the next three years. the school district says this move could save them $1.9

this morning officials along the coast, issued a warning saying the storm knocked trees down. crews have been sweeping culverts and leaves so they don't clog storm drains. they are filling up sand bags at local yards to prevent flooding. in san carlos, you can pick up sandbag as at the corporation yard off of branson road. sand bags will be available at the park. the rain could last until tuesday potentially causing problems in the santa cruz mot -- mountains. because of the approaching storms the south bay's largest

will hold a hearing in oak land, members of the civil rights group are looking for solutions to what they call the frequent brutality by oakland police. hearing comes 2002 days after the fbi was called. two officers shot and kill 37- year-old derrick jones during a domestic violence call. the officers say jones appeared to pull a metal object from his pants, it turned out to be a scale and not a gun. we are learning the mother killed at a sacramento strip mall sacrificed herself to save her son. she shielded her son's body as stray bullets flew around them tuesday afternoon. sheriff's deputies found her body draped over her 2-year-old son as he sat strapped in the car seat. the toddler emerged from the scene unharmed but his mother was pronounced dead. a second person died as a result of the gun battle.

legislation yesterday that would end the 1993 law banning gays from serving openly in the military. the bill moves to the senate as so called privilege bill streamlining the process for bringing to it a vote. along with the don't ask don't tell legislation lawmakers on capitol hill have important issues to act on including controversial tax deal. with so much going on, senate majority leader harry reid floated the idea of keeping the isn't in session during the holidays. sandra is live with reaction to that idea. >> reporter: good morning. he seems loo tick scrooge of the season at least when you are talking about lawmaker and capitol hill. there is so much to do for the lawmakers with little time they are up against clock. the tax deal is a huge issue that needs to be done before the year is over because that's when the current tax law expires that was passed in the senate and that goes to the house. there are sticking points

there. obviously room for debate. spending bill that's a $1.1 trillion measure that house leaders and senators are arguing over the price tag and if they do not pass it the current spending authorization expires in two days so clearly a lot of wrangling over that. don't ask, don't tell repealing that in the house it was a stand alone bill as you mentioned now it's to the senate, they have to vote on the measure, whether that will get done before the year's end we will see. there is all indication that it could come up for a vote next week. the senate cleared the way to start the debate over this new nuclear arms treaty with russia. they will start debates this week or next week. currently a lot on their plate with little time left. harry reid threatening that lawmakers may have to work through the holidays. listen to this. >> we could work as most americans do during the

a security officer shot and wounded duke and duke killed himself. the final witness in the richmond gang rape case could testify as early as today. the judge will hear more testimony from a dna expert who examined evidence taken from the crime scene outside richmond high. testified dna from four of the 7 defendants was recovered from the victim. a judge will decide whether there is enough evidence to put the 7 suspects on trial. they are accused in last year's brutal gang rape of a teenage girl outside a homecoming dance. bail doubled for a man accused of sexually assaulting a child inside a wal-mart store. 29-year-old carlisle did not enter a plea yesterday in alameda county court. the judge set the previous bail of $110,000 was a miscalculation and made it

new developments involving the wikileaks case this morning in london a british judge rejected an appeal to keep wikileaks founder julian assange in prison as he fights extradition to sweden. this is video outside the courthouse, supporters cheered when the judge issued his ruling. hen assange is released he will go to stay at a mansion that belongs to one of his supporters. the attorney says instead of house arrest he will be under mansion arrest, assange is wanted in sweden for questioning in a sex crimes investigation. here at home layoff notices have been given to six antii don't antii don't antii don't antiantiyoke -- antioch police officers. the mayor called an emergency meeting to talk about the rise in violent crime in the city including a doubling of the homicide rate just this year.

the crime rate in east palo alto has dropped dramatically in the past two decades. the city still has one of the highest levels of violent crime in california. east palo alto chief will talk about the study, anticrime initiatives tonight at 6:00 at city hall. 42 homicides were reported in 1992, but in every year since east palo alto averaged less than 10. according to the study, palo alto has a higher percentage of violent crime compared to the state average. we are now learning that a state inspector warned pge of safety risks 19 months before the san bruno blast. that's according to a letter obtained by the san francisco chronicle. the letter warned that persistent safety problems in pge gas distribution system were putting the public at risk and suggest the relationship
