cloudy skies with light rain right now. this is the first of what appears to be many systems coming in to impact not only us but all of california. antioch police are investigating yet another violent crime. three people were stabbed last night. why this comes at a particularly troubling time for that city. the morning news continues. good morning. welcome back to the ktvu morning news i'm tori campbell pam cook is off today. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and traffic. here is steve. >> good morning. we had light rain last night. this morning there is a broad brush here. some of that green is turning to white. i wouldn't be surprised if it's

a little dicey there right now. lows 40s to 30s for some. light rain will turn to heavy rain by the weekend. now here is sal. steve, right now at the toll plaza westbound there is a little bit of a slow down. i wouldn't say there is much of one. it may be getting a little bit heavier in a few minutes as they turn the metering lights on. also when you get to marin county rain is coming down the commute is not good. and there has already been an accident on southbound 101. let's go live to ktvu reporter kraig debro who is near marin city. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, sal. the traffic is heavier here. it happened three hours ago. this is 101 southbound. it's two lanes shut down. but the second lane is only shut down for a little bit. right beyond where you are seeing it. it clears up a little bit. let me show you what happened. i can't even pick up the sign. the car that crashed here

knocked over the speed limit sign and the driver said he was going 55 miles an hour. it's raining and wet and that might have contributed to the accident. up here tow truck drivers, chp trying to get this car out of the ravine. i walked down there earlier. this is not going to be an easy get here. the chp told me 15 minutes ago might be an hour. could be longer than that. if you are coming through here be careful. when i talked to the chp they said this accident wasn't necessarily caused by the weather. >> we had a driver on the way to work. stated he was driving 55 miles an hour. the rain started earlier in the evening tonight. he said a deer had run out in front of him and he swerved to avoid the deer and unfortunately lost control of his vehicle a long the way. >> reporter: how far is it down there? we can't see the car. >> approximately 100 feet. after he drifted off the

roadway collided with the 55 miles an hour speed limit sign. >> reporter: so chp officers and other local officers were out here putting up flairs in the roadway so people can be careful coming through here. as sort of a debris field here. all the way down there. if we are back out live. that is a chp officer right there. there car is another 75 feet beyond here and 15 feet down. and it ended up on its roof. the man was in the car. right now minor injuries. he was take ton the hospital for -- he was taken to the hospital for observation. report living in marin county kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. 6:04. rain may have been a factor in a serious big rig accident another one in antioch. the crash happened just after midnight on the westbound highway 4 bypass near loan tree

way. the chp says the driver swerved off the highway and plunged down an embankment in the pouring rain. the driver was rushed to the hospital. there is no word on his condition. 6:04. antioch police are investigating an overnight stabbing at a neighborhood bar. this happened at the cruiser saloon on a street. this is the late nest a recent string of -- this is the latest in a recent string of violence. tara moriarty is live. good morning. >> reporter: we are here at cruiser saloon. we saw a man coming to pick up his car. we asked him if he saw anything last night. he refused to talk to us. then a couple moments later. a man drove by in his truck truck. he parked his car over in the middle of the parking lot and then left. it was very odd. no one is talking about this with us this particular stabbing. but this is the late nest a

rash of violent crimes here in antioch. if you take a look across the street here. there is a strip mall. there was a shooting there with that gas station is. police say last night three people were stabbed during a fight at cruisers. at least one of the injuries is serious. it's not clear what set off the bar brawl. this latest incident is one of five violent crimes to happen. now despite the apparent spike in crime. the city is getting ready lay off six officers because of budget problems. >> we are not turning our city over to any criminals. >> i think we do need more police to protect us. i have a little daughter ourselves. it will be scary. if something happens to me the light where is alive is not that good. it will be scary for me to walk home and nobody comes to help me. >> reporter: now last week a woman was dragged to her death

and two men were also injured in separate shootings. antioch has recorded ten homicides this year. there were only five in 2009. these police layoffs could be avoided if the city is willing to sit down and make some contract concessions before the end of this year. we'll keep you posted. we're live in antioch des moines-- tara moriarty. sal. >> but heard craig say that accident in marin will be there for awhile. we also have other commutes we have been watching for example san rafael. southbound 101 heading down to san rafael that is a tough commute and it's wet. just take it easy and drive slowly. you never know when you will have to stop suddenly and when you do you don't want to go too fast. let's take a look at northbound 101. that traffic looks good approaching the split and no major problems and i don't

think my maps are going to come up. i'm just going to send it back after this picture. i will send it back to steve. steve. yes, sal. >> it will be raining all weekend? >> off and on. you can see the enhancement. when you see the enhancement right off the coast, that is development taking place. colder tops, more heavy rain. it depends on where this takes aim. if you're in eureka you may not get much. there is projection it will slide south and north maybe even ten days. next week could be just as interesting as this week. today we start off cloudy. some fog and rain and snow. you can see the careen turning to white up there in the sierra. even on five you get north of there you f you have to travel you could get pretty low snow levels. it's us last night it was the peninsula that picked up a

little bit of rain. now the lighter bans are coming through. the heavier amounts are coming offshore. the rain will pick up later on. the big low is taking it north of the hawaiian islands and directing it right at us. santa cruz less than a quarter of an inch. hayward and dublin .12. san francisco and san jose .09. this will beth first of many, many rain totals. today foggy, cloudy light rain. the wind also will start to crank up. it's only 20-25 right now. higher elevations on the cost. watch that pick up and also over the sierra gusts over 100 are possible over the ridges. 40s on the temps. yesterday we had 20s and 30s. the cloud cover brought the lows up. fremont starting off 47. 50 at noon and 53 for your

afternoon high. there will be a lot of clouds and light rain. you can see the light rainfall picking up. until this low moves out it just keeps funneling systems around. the interesting part is at least for me another low looks like it will come in and take its place next week. this could be a pattern we're in for a long time. it's a blocking pattern. if you are in line for rain and snow, than you can have a long stretch of it. winter storm warning friday morning goes through sunday afternoon. snowfall heavy. it's just going to be crazy up there. the snow levels start at 4500 feet go up and go back down. 40s and 50s on your highs. cloudy and fog today. more rain into the weekend and a very strong system on tap for tuesday and wednesday. thank you, steve. it is 6:10. both cities and residents have been prepare for the weather over the last couple of days.

you dave. the bottom line here is your tax rates are not going to go up for next year. in fact there is a payroll tax break in this bill which means you might see an increase in your paycheck. the vote in the house was bipartisan and overwhelming. >> on this vote the yeas are 277 the nays are 148. >> reporter: after weeks of fighting about it the house okayed the $857 million deal to extend bush tax rates for everyone and long-term unemployment benefits for millions out of work. many democrats did not like the tax breaks for the wealthy. house speaker nancy pelosi took to the floor ahead of the vote to rally against a $20 billion estate tax provision she says only benefits the richest americans. >> think of what we could do with that $23 billion. we could give $7,000 raise to

every public schoolteacher in america. we could create investigating in new technology 780,000 jobs. >> reporter: now almost the entire bay area delegation voted against it. only east bay congressman jerry mcneary voted yes. house speaker pelosi did not vote. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. it is 6:16. four consultants for a mountain view company has been arrested for insider trading. the tech executives that also consulted for primary global research passed sense tiff information about nine high- tech firms including aing to hedge -- including apple for hedge fund investigators. they were paid $400,000 for information about consumer

have. the bay bridge right now doesn't seem to be as heavy as it normally is. it's friday. they do the four-day week thing. it will be a little bit lighter. once you get on the bridge, it will be somewhat tough driving into san francisco. let's move a long and take a look at commute. northbound 101 traffic is moving a long okay. again you can clearly tell we have been having a tough commute. in contra costa county highway four antioch that traffic is already busy. 680 is okay though if you're driving on 80 from panole. let's go to steve. thank you sir. cloudy. light rain. nothing heavy. we have fog and clouds but the rain will pick up in intensity later on. it will be a cloudy rainy light rain day and look for the rainfall to pick up over the next few days. you can see everything offshore sen haining and it will only get -- is enhancing and will

50s with a lot of rain. it's 6:20. the federal reserve is proposing a cap on fees that banks can charge merchants for debit card transactions. the 12-cent limit could cut up to 90% of the limit collected. that could help visa and mastercard who's stocks plunged. but it could also help merchants that charge 50 cents. the average interest of a 30-year fixed rate loan is 4.83%. that is up two tenths of a point in the last week. just last month the rate here is 40 year low. time now 6:21. the national organization for women has filed a complaint against several hooter restaurants in california including right here in the bay

long okay on the san mateo bridge despite the wet weather. it seems we are getting a little bit of a break when it comes to collision. however, the chp is still asking for you to slow down. we have an update on the dmv employee who sent a personal letter to a transgender woman. he has resigned. last week amber yust showed the letter that he sent her. it warned she would be condemned to internal damnation after under going the sex change operation. the dmv says his actions were unacceptable. time now 6:26. california's public utilities commission is ordering pg&e to reduce the pressure of natural gas flowing through its two largest eastbound pipelines. the puc based that on the ntsb

finding in the san bruno findings. pg&e will reduce the pressure in two 30-inch pipelines. one of them runs from milpitas to fremont. >> we have been checking the system relentlessly for leaks and we haves reduced the -- and we have also reduced the pressure on our initiatives in the pipelines to make sure they are safe. >> pg&e is saying residential customers will not be effected. it's 6:27. a retired man from south carolina is helping to ease california's budget deficit. 74-year-old dennis ferguson sent the state a check for $10,000 for repayment of unemployment benefits he received 46 years ago.

research in motion. we will keep an eye on the markets and give you an update. right now we will smile and say good morning to you. thank you for joining us here. friday december 17th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm tori campbell. pam cook has the day off. it's now 6:30. an update on developing news in marin county. a car has gone into the ditch causing problems for the morning commute near the golden gate bridge. kraig debro is live in sausalito for an update there. good morning, craig. >> reporter: good morning tori they have closed one, two lanes. the cars going by me it doesn't look so bad that way. it will look worse going the other way because the slow down is back there. watch out george. behind us right now the tow truck is in the middle of the process of pulling the car out of ditch. we can final by get a picture of the car. we have not seen it this morning. i walked down there. it's about 100 feet down there. this is the car that was in the ditch at 3:00 a.m.

this morning. chp says the guy in the car that rolled over several times. the guy ended up on his roof upside down. he was the one that called 911. if the gentlemen had not been able to do that, that car might have been down there for awhile. you couldn't see it off the highway. officer kevin is here. how serious is the situation might this have been if the guy couldn't reach his phone? >> it could have been very serious. as far down off the roadway he was, he was not visible from the road. this weather rarely we would have been able to see him. if his injuries were more serious or could have become more serious we have cold weather out. we obviously have those issues we could have been dealing with. luckily he was able to get out of his car and use his cell phone. >> reporter: when do you estimate it will be cleared up? >> we are making good progress at this point.

i hope it's very soon. >> reporter: this happened around 4 in the morning. single car accident. the driver told the chp a deer ran in front of his car. this is 200 yards south. the car loses control of his car and ends up in the ditch down there. he has been taken to the hospital. he is okay. the cause of crash is investigation. reporting live in marin county kraig debro. oakland police are investigating a double shooting. it happened at 10:30 last night near bancroft avenue. two shooting victims were found inside a car. one of them was slumped over the steering wheel. the condition of the victims is not known right now. we do have new information about a home invasion robbery and assault in mountain view. it happened three months ago. police now say the robbers who broke into the home on phillis avenue through an unlocked door stole a large amount of cash and a pair of rare high powered

guns. police say the two robbers severely beat a 72-year-old man in the home and also hit his live-in nurse. the nurse is consider the a person of interest, but so far no arrests have been made. in nearby palo alto there were two separate robberies that happened as residents pulled into their driveway. one happened last night at 11:00. police say a gunman robbed two people stealing cash and credit cards while they were still in their car. on saturday a woman had her purse stolen in her driveway. palo alto police are not sure if the incidents are related. this morning police are still searching for suspects in a deadly stab of course a young football star from newark. ♪ it's so hard to say goodbye ♪ >> last night hundreds of family members, friends, and classmates took part in a

candle lite vigil. they gathered near the bus stop where two men stabbed him. his girlfriend is still shaken by his last words. he called her on his cell phone. >> he just called me and all he said was they stabbed me, they stabbed me. i said where are you? he wasn't talking to me anymore. i was trying to yell. i was yelling his name. where are you? where are you? he wasn't talking. >> police are investigating whether his death was in retaliation at an incident at a teen party two months ago. the football star came to the aid of a cheerleader that was being beaten by two men that crashed the party. 6:35. new information on a story we first brought you last night on ktvu channel 10:00 news. they obtained these photos of a head on crash that injured two people. the car going the wrong way

slammed into another car just before 9:00 last night. the westbound side was closed to traffic for almost two hours. one person from each car had to billion extricated -- had to be extricated. san francisco police are investigating a crash this one involving a ucsf shuttle bus. it sent six people to the hospital. this happened at noontime yesterday right outside san francisco general hospital. police say a speeding car set off a chain reaction crash involving that bus and two other cars. the victims are expected to survive. last month a ucsf shuttle van was involved in a deadly pedestrian crash. all right a lot of crashes you just reported on. let's check in with sal. you said we need to billion careful out there. >> yeah. we have lighter volume. we still need to be careful and

throughout the next week i guess it will be raining according to steve. so it's going to be tough driving throughout. let's take a look at bay bridge toll plaza. it is lighter than usual. there is a back up in some of the lanes but it's not all that bad. again on friday we do have lighter volume and it will help us out. moving a long to 880 we've had a couple collisions here on 880 closer to downtown. 880 traffic is busier now near the coliseum. livermore westbound 580 slowing come into the valley. nothing major. contra costa traffic highway 4 is slow. there is an accident on kirk pass road at the top of the hill. looks like minor injuries. five vehicles involved. a lot of people use that as a shortcut. this morning it might not be a cool shortcut. i would stay on the main road. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. a very happy friday. i'm trying to pinpoint everything is next time

possible. friday afternoon evening, sunday, tuesday will be the main weather days. there will be rain saturday and monday but if everything continues to come in as i'm seeing it, that looks like the focus for the heaviest. you can see the enhancement for the cloud cover. it looks like the north bay. all it has to do is dip 30-40 miles south. not everyone is getting rain. we have cloudy skies and some fog. your quick forecast cloudy. rain. all the way into christmas. this is a very active pattern from eureka up to the sierra where they will measure the snow in feet. next week it looks like more rain and wind. the south bay not getting too much. and also to the east bay and that turns to snow. it is snowing up in tahoe right now. truckie. blue canyon as well. some of the rain since last night not that much.

livermore .19. our observer in san francisco .16. hayward and dublin .12. and oakland .10. not much but it's a start. this could be really intense as it takes aim right now cape mendocino south. the north bay might be in line for the the heaviest and then slide further south. everyone is in the area for rain. temperatures in the 40z. which is about 10 degrees warmer. fremont target forecast. 47 to start and then 50 and 53. lows in the 40s or very low 50s. there is plenty going on which could be many systems between now and the middle of next week. big low in the gulf of mexico. it takes that with a very active jet stream. so when you get that, that gives you every ingredient to get pretty good rain and snow

is snowing. it looks like to be right around blue canyon. tahoe reporting light snow. truckie and also bear valley. for us it's light rain but it will pick up later on this afternoon. >> all right, steve. welcome back. here's a quick look at the other top stories we are following for you. today president obama will sign the new tax cut legislation it passed in a midnight vote in the house of representatives. it prevents a new years day tax hike for millions of americans and extends unemployment benefits. six people were displaced by a house fire in oakland overnight inclouding a mother and her two young children. it happened at 4:00 this morning on 82nd avenue. the crews are still out there investigating and everybody did get out safe. and despite the rain, tori. >> despite the rain people are lining upright now at san francisco's glide memorial church hoping to get the makings for a holiday meal.

ktvu channel 2 reporter paul chambers is there. good morning, paul. >> reporter: good morning, tori. in an hour from now volunteers will begin giving away these bags. let me show you behind you here. there is a ton of people in line here. you can only see a portion of it. it snakes around. they say 500 people are already in line. the first person got here at 3:00 this morning. they plan to give away 5,000 bags but the church leader doesn't believe that is enough. >> the donors are not coming through as they had in the last year the last two years. >> reporter: yesterday church staff geared up to give away 5,000 bags filled with potatoes, vegetables, and turkeys. glide officials say they usually want to give 6,000. they are a thousand less than normal. donations are down 15% this year and the church is short 90 volunteers to help bag and distribute the food.

volunteers may not be able to take a day off of work to help out. they are always accepting donations. they are also asking for toys. they have a toy give away starting next week. we will talk to people in line they really depend on this food. they are pretty good on volunteers right now and through the holidays. they always need volunteers after that season. but they are always accepting donations at any time. we are live outside here add glide i'm paul chambers. it is 6:46 in just a few hours investigators are expected to release the name of the man who's body was discover in the santa cruz mountains. it's believed the body found is 57-year-old jonathan frank. the pennsylvania man has been missing since saturday. it now appears he took his own life. family members say he was deeply depressed over marital and money problems.

a homeless man is being praised for turning in a wallet he found that was full of cash. brian christopher is a 49-year- old navy veteran that has fallen on hard times. he's been staying at a center for homeless vets in boston. he found the wallet a few days ago that had $172 inside. with three young kids staying in maryland, he faced a big dilemma. >> money. i lost my job. i knew i could get a nice pretty decent christmas present for each one of my kids. >> he turned the money into a police officer and soon discovered the wallet belonged to a woman that dropped it while working on as a bike cur your. the cord of story is spreading quickly. the place he's been staying has been getting calls to help him out. >> great story. time now 6:47. let's go to sal. we have stories about your commute this morning.

a lot happening, sal. >> yeah, good morning. it is a lot of -- there are a lot of accidents out there. as a matter of fact we are watching that problem in marin county. southbound 101. these are live pictures of southbound 101. this car was down the ravine. they have to tow it away. the two right lanes are blocked on southbound 101 just before roe day owe. and southbound 101 traffic is busy heading to the golden gate bridge. this will be a big traffic problem for you want to take the golden gate. the traffic on the bridge looks okay. the morning drive will be effected by slow traffic at the bay bridge. slowing westbound coming up to the toll plaza metering lights but only a five minute delay. in livermore we keep watching 580 because it's getting slower. also checking in with highway 4 antioch.

680 has improved from concord to walnut creek. so far not too much slowing on those corridors. let's go to steve. thank you, sir. you ready for what looks to be an active weather pattern? it started last night. santa cruz mountains light rain. i have totals coming up. we see cloudy skies, fog, light rain. north of it north bay and east bay. i did see foggy conditions down toward san jose state. but light rain moving through a tenth of an inch for some so far and it does turn to snow up in the sierra nevada. that is a sign of a very fast and active jet stream right there. you can cyathuses funneling a lot of -- you can see that's funneling a lot of it. now the jet stream it looks like over now and the next five- seven days may drift south and come back north. it won't be continuous rain but it will be a pattern where we get a lot of rain here in the next week or so.
