of murdering. they both grew up in the same neighborhood and were said to be very close. >> we believe that greg elarms acting alone with a motive that is still unclear, gunned down mr. davis lewis in the parking lot of the hillsdale mall on that june evening. >> reporter: six months ago, an east palo alto community activist was gunned down in the parking lot of the hillsdale shopping center. police believe elarms went to the medical center where lewis worked in the aids outreach program and followed him to the mall. chief said elarms told police he had relevant informing. >> in our discussions with him as a potential -- as potentially having information, we determined that there were things that did not sound right about this. >> reporter: tonight at the

drug rehab program lewis cofounded we learned elarms did hang out here before the shooting. a friend says both lewis and elarms had drug habits they kicked. >> david was such an instrumental person, you know, in greg's life to help him with whatever he needed help with. so, you know, i'm just devastated. >> reporter: lewis' wife and daughter said they did not know elarms. his wife said she just wants to know why. >> i'm in the same field david is in. i work with severely mental health. schizophrenic and paranoid. i don't know what this person's reasoning was. >> reporter: the police told me they have solid evidence to believe they have their man. live in east palo alto, "ktvu

channel 2 news." . police are searching for three men they believe are were in a shooting tonight. after a man was shot in the head in the 1200 block of rock spring way, police say witnesses told them three men wearing hoodies were seen driving away from the scene. the car is described as a green ford escort. no word on the wounded man's identity. he's at the hospital in critical condition. we have new information tonight about a deadly officer- involved shooting. police say the officer opened fire on a man with a gun following a chase on interstate 580. when the suspect's car exited the freeway, it crashed. ken wayne is live on the scene now with new information, ken? >> reporter: julie, we're at the corner of 33rd street and 13th avenue where the chase came to an end and where the suspect's vehicle crashed through the fence.

if you step over here, you can see where the pursuing police car also hit the fence, knocking part of it down. the shooting happened at a house next door. police haven't identified the victim, but we talked to a woman tonight who said she went to the coroner's office and identified that victim as her son. >> for a teenage young man to hang out with his mom, i know, i know he was trying hard. he was hanging out with me. any time you get a young man to hang out with his mom, he's trying it change. >> reporter: edwards is talking about her 19 year old son. she says he's the young man police accused of carrying a hand gun when officers opened fire near highland hospital. >> that person did have a handgun, and he was shot. he was pronounced dead on the scene. >> reporter: it started at 2:15 this afternoon when undercover officers spotted this car in west oakland that was involved in a shooting last friday.

a chase began and the car exited the freeway and crashed through a fence. four suspects jumped from the car and one was shot while apparently running through a backyard. two have been detained and a fourth is still on the run. police also say they found an assault rifle in the car. edwards admits her son has had trouble with the law and was on probation, but she says her son was also the victim of overzealous police who tased him recently in a case where officers never filed charges against him. >> tased in the head, in his back, his finger was cut up. they never pressed charges against anything. >> reporter: these are late pictures of the crime scene where the shooting took place, and a short time ago the suspect's vehicle was towed away from this fence that was knocked down here earlier today. oakland police say they plan to hold a news conference sometime tomorrow to give us more details on exactly what happened and what charges may be filed against the people

detained. live in oakland, ken wayne, "ktvu channel 2 news." according to oakland police, today's shooting 1 the sixth officer-involved shooting this year. of those, police say four have been fatal. a judge is expected to decide tomorrow which of seven men and boys accused in the gang rape of a 16 year old girl from richmond will proceed to trial. final arguments are set for tomorrow. the judge will then decide if there's sufficient evidence to prosecute the seven for the sexual assault outside of 5 homecoming dance last year. the judge has indicated a 15 year old boy implicated in the case will probably not be tried. six other men and boys between 16 and 44 years old face 26 years to life in prison if convicted. a officer is recovering from injuries suffered when a pickup truck crashed into his patrol car about one this afternoon of highway 101 in

nevada. the chp tells ktvu news the officer was standing next to his car and was thrown 10 feet in the air. the pickup driver was cited for unsafe driving. the search for a missing woman in southern california came to a sad ending tonight. after dark search crews identified the woman's body after discovering her mini van in the russian river. jim vargas reports. >> reporter: the search for the 62 year old began yesterday after friends reported her missing. they feared she drove into the river the night before. deputies found tire tracks about 30 feet above the river and concentrated their efforts here. the strong doesn'ts defeated -- currents defeated the first day's efforts. >> it's difficult to see, the visibility is zero. >> sheriffs along with the fire department and cal fire and

state parks personnel joined the search. they dropped a camera in the water and patrolled for almost four hours. when they didn't work, they used a rod with a strong magnet. just before dusk, the mini van found, her body inside. >> when you're dialing with moving water that's hard and you can't see. you never want to hurt anybody in that process. we took our time. >> reporter: friends told investigators they had dinner and left together with her driving behind them. within a few minutes they realized she wasn't following. they retraced their routes but couldn't find her. ben had planned to leave today to visit relatives in oregon for the holidays. the sacramento coral society says its intent was to spread holiday cheer, but a flash mob event promoted on the internet drew so many people in roseville it ended up triggering an evacuation. firefighters say about 5,000 people ended up inside the mall. they say they could hear noises such as pops and cracks that sounded like the foundation might be failing. the society decided to move the singing outside. a big crowd is on hand where the city council is expected to vote on a proposal to build a new target. target promises jobs and sales tax revenue, but opponents say it will snarl travel and shove out small businesses. live with this story. debra? >> reporter: jew lee, it's standing-room only here. about 200 people onhand. city staff has spoken, the

made famous in a hollywood movie ten years ago. janet has our report. >> reporter: in any city when you turn on the tap, you're bound to find more than just pure h2o, today a non-profit released a study that water samples taken from san jose and 30 other cities have a possible carcinogen. >> we picked a few cities that found detections repeatedly and san jose was one of those cities. san francisco doesn't have a problem. we knew that, so we didn't test there. >> reporter: researchers say the san jose sample was taken from a public library. among the cities tested, san jose had the 5th highest level at 1.3 parts per billion. one above the .06 per billion california has considered adopting as an acceptable

minimum level. it's used in processes such as chrome plating and naturally in soil. water company supplies 80% of the city supply. >> san jose's water exceeds or meets drinking water standards. chromium 6 is not a chemical that is regulated by the united states environmental protection agency. >> late today, the u.s. epa released a statement saying epa regularly evaluates drinking water standards and we already launched a rigorous and comprehensive review of the effects of chromium 6 on human health. they'll review the research to determine if new standards need to be set. hopes will reduce pedestrian accidents in the city. >> i've almost gotten ran over a couple of times. >> an average of two people a day are hit by cars in san francisco. pedestrian accidents are five times the national average in some neighborhoods, including china town, tenderloin, financial district, and south of market. in some cases, narrow streets are to blame, in others, high- speed traffic. >> this is a walkable city, but we've had a lot of streets that act more like highways than like city streets or neighborhood streets. >> the mayor wants to see lower speed limits near schools and an increase in traffic-calming measures such as wider sidewalks. after five months in service the shuttle could be expanding. they announced today the city is close to extending operating hours to 1:00 a.m. on weekends. it currently runs from 7 in the morning to 7 at night.
