we are live in marin county this morning on storm watch. it is raining here and across the bay area. well tell you what you -- we'll tell you what you need to look out for. >> it's wet everywhere. we've had a lot of fender benders. we'll talk more about that straight ahead. a potent frontal boundary. we'll have a dry break to talk about coming up in a few minutes. also this morning we are following overnight news for oakland. firefighters rescue a man trapped beneath a train. the morning news continues. good morning. thank you for waking up with us. it's wednesday december 22nd i'm pam cook. >> and i'm dave clark. let's check your weather and

traffic. steve is off today but we do have mark. thank you. we have been tracking the moderate rainfall this morning. we have a bit of activity to talk about. the overall trend is gradually moving off to the east. that trend will continue in the short-term. plan on the wet roadways this morning with significant rainfall in the short-term. i will have much more coming up in a few minutes. sal has an update on traffic. good morning, sal. all right. traffic is moving a long slowly in some areas. there is a lot of standing water because of the overnight storm. that mean ifs you are driving to -- that means if you are driving to work you should give yourself extra time. we are looking a the 280 up to highway 17 that traffic is moving along okay. the wet weather is causing problems on bay areas roads. claudine wong is on storm watch this morning. she joins us from marin county.

claudine. >> reporter: we're on shoreline highway. traffic is moving a long pretty well out there. you will want to give yourself extra time we've been talking about all morning. we came to shoreline highway becauseth cal tran signs are up. this is just one of the areas. this area lucky drive tends to flood when the rain continues to fall. you want to know why. this is where the water will spill over. this is where it's already deep. there is nowhere else for the water to go as high tide comes up it will come up and spill over the roadway. they have shut down this area over the last couple of days when the water gets too high. one of the things you need to watch for. we will keep an eye on it for you this morning. if we have any problems we'll let you know. live here in marin county claudine wong. the overnight rain is also expected to effect holiday travelers. travelers should call their airline before leaving home to catch a flight this morning.

it's a good bet flight delays will begin in a few hours. the bay areas wet weather has been causing delays all week during the busy holiday travel days. the stormy weather is also making very tough travel situation even worse this year. we will be checking in throughout the morning to find out about any possible delays. in sonoma county crews will be searching for new leaks and sandbagging around a damaged levy as rain is on the way. that's after yesterday's emergency repairs to the earth and levy north of highway 37. now the levy protects the wetland area with sensitive wildlife habitat but it had a hole in it and it was made worse by the rain and tide. crews are braces for more repairs. >> they are all ready to go. >> you don't mind giving up your holiday? >> no this is our job.

>> the levies date back 50 years when the levied were walled off to grow hay. time now 6:03. more and very intense and heavy rainstorms will drench the l.a. area this morning. the most intense system yet. police in the l.a. area went door to door late last night telling residents they should evacuate certain neighborhoods and those that refused to leave were forced to sign a waiver. the main concern is flash flooding and mud slides and the burn areas. governor schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in the area. we will bring you a live report on the very latest from the los angeles area later this hour. in our channel 2 website ktvu.com we have more information on the southern california evacuations. you can also find tools to track our storms locally as well as get information on where to get free sandbags. just look for the storm watch section on the front page. an oakland man is in the hospital right now after being

pulled from underneath a train near jack london square a couple hours ago. this happened around 3:40 this morning. look at the pictures. the man somehow became pinned beneath this train at broadway. firefighters were able to pull him out. the man was in a wheelchair. no word yet on his condition. one lane is still closed on northbound 101 in santa rosa after a pedestrian was hit and killed on the freeway overnight. that happened at about 1:30 this morning just north of the mendocino avenue overpass. the chp says the victim was in the right lane. chp says the right lane northbound will remain closed until 8:00 this morning to complete investigation. the name of the victim has not been released. oakland police are searching for answers this morning in a gruesome killing of a woman.

a bird watcher made the discovery near do little drive. the woman was only partially closed she had been shot several times and her throat had been slit. police are offering a $10,000 reward in this case. oakland police are giving us new information on monday's deadly officer involved shooting. police were asked to open fire after edwards pointed a gun directly at them. they also say edwards was part of a violent street game. >> any loss of life is definitely tragic in this organization. at the same time we have to balance that with trying to protect the community. we did everything we could to protect the individuals from going out and killing innocent people. >> that fatal shooting followed a police chase that ended with a crash. edwards according to police was among four people inside the

car. police did arrest one man but two others in the car escaped and they are still on the loose. in just a few hours san mateo assemblyman will sign an order of crack down on party buses. he was killed when he crashed his suv after drinking for hours on a party bus. the bill would require bus drivers to check if their passengers are 21 or older. violators could face fines of $12t thousand. we will hear from assembly men hill and brett's mother linda. our time this morning 6:07. we have wet roads this morning. sal says it's not a typical commute but yeah it's wet so there are problems. >> yeah dave and pam people already have time off for the holidays so it's not typical to see the big backups. because of the wet weather we

may see more crashes unfortunately until it stops raining. for the last few days we have not seen that backup that we normally see even when they switch metering lights on. whatever. it doesn't get big. we expect that to be the case for the next few weeks or so. people will have time off. let's move a long and take a look at the sunol grade. you could be driving along fine and the car in front of you could do something dumb or stop you need to be able to stop to avoid a collision. this is a look at 280 heading up to highway 17. no problems on highway 17. as several of our viewers told us driving on highway 17 with the tree limbs down and everything which be tricky. let's go to mark. hi there sal. the bulk of the heavy rainfall will be this morning. fairly impressive totals over

the past 24 hours. especially over the past three to six hours. you can see with santa rosa .73. we are adding to the amounts right now with san jose just over a tenth of an inch. fairly impressive cells right now closer to san francisco and immediate shoreline at least right now over the next one hour or so. here we go for today. a.m. rain clouds and sun. a dry weather pattern. this is setting up for thursday and also into friday but there is another storm we are tracking upstream in the flow. rain returns for this weekend and also an increase in the wind speeds. here's the satellite radar. the frontal system moving across. this activity will be moving out toward the east for this afternoon. as a result we scale back on the coverage and also the probability. and that trend will continue in the short-term. at 9:00 you can still see lingering rain showers. by livermore and san jose.

this is not too extreme. in the afternoon hours not a lot to show you. 1:00 same deal. by 4:00. still a chance of a popup showers. by 10:00 and 11:00 tonight still some lingering clouds. clouds and showers at 7:00. temperatures under 50 demurest. by 12:00 a chance of a shower. and by 3:00 a sound cloud mix. temperatures this morning most areas in the lower 50s and not a big change for the afternoon highs. san jose 57. half-moon bay in the mid 50s and look ahead your five-day forecast we haven't advertised a break and it's still set for thursday and friday. there we go with that rainfall for christmas day especially with the afternoon hours. rain clouds could linger in day five. another forecast check in a few minutes. >> thank you. time now 6:10. hillsborough police say they broke up a major bay area burglary ring and now they are look for the items that were

stolen. items were taken from 170 people. debra and her boyfriend both from oakland are facing charges in connection with the burglaries. >> they are taking silverware, china, personal items that have a lot of sent mental value to farm -- sent meant l value. police are also expected to make their first court appearance next month. the search is on in the east bay for whoever could have done this to a family dog. find out what happened to him and where he was found. and president obama is about to sign a bill into law repealing the military's controversial don't ask don't tell policy. i will tell you who is at the bill signing from the bay area coming up.

back to the morning news. any moment now president obama will sign the landmark bill into law to appeal the militaries don't ask don't tell policy. the move will allow openingly gay men and women to serve in the armed forces. ktvu alison burns joins us from our washington, d.c. newsroom with more on who is attending the signing ceremony. alison. >> reporter: good morning to

you, pam. there are so many people from all over the country that have been involved in the fight to appeal the 17-year-old policy that want to be the ceremony this morning so president obama is holding it at a big auditorium at the interior department instead of at the white house. this is a live look at the stage. the president just arrived. he is about to sign a landmark bill. is a several gay former service members from the bay area are joining local lawmakers at the signing this morning including zoey dunning. she is a commander that was discharged for being gay and reinstated after a court battle. we will bring you live coverage throughout the morning on the morning news. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. time now 6:15. the senate is expected to take a crucial test vote today on a health care bill that would benefit those first responders to the september 11th attacks.

this bill would provide more than $6 billion to the rescue workers that became ill after exposed to poisons at the world trade centers ruins. it needs 60 votes to move forward. california's senators boxer and feinstein are putting pressure on the federal government to set standards for acrasin gin. the chemical compound is known as chromeon six. right now there are no six state or federal guidelines for the amount that is allowed in drinking water. the compound in tap water in 31 u.s. cities including san jose. the federal is government is joining the investigation into a tragic case of school bullying in california. department of education investigators want to know if curran county school districts could have prevented a gay student suicide last september.

family members say the death of 13-year-old seth walsh was the direct result of vicious schoolyard bullying. other students were constantly picking on him for his mannerisms and style of dress. let's go back live to washington. president obama speaking about the don't ask don't tell. >> with shelling landing around him amid smoke and chaos and the screams of wounded men, this soldier, this friend, scaled down the icy slope risking his own life to bring private coran to safer grounds. for the rest of his years, lloyd credited this soldier, this friend named andy lee with saving his life. knowing he would never have made it out alone. it was a full four decades

after the war when the two friends reunited in their golden years that lloyd learned the man that saved his life his friend andy was gay. he had no idea. and he didn't much care. military regardless of their skills no matter their years of exemplary performance because they happen to be gay. no longer will tens of thousands of americans in uniform be asked to live a lie or look over their shoulder in order to serve the country that they love. see the water kicking up in the headlights that the roads are wet and it could be slower this morning as things get busier. we want to show you the rainfall. you can take a look at street light you can see the rain coming down. it has been a consistent, steady rain out here this morning. this the first break we have seen in the last couple of hours. we came out here to shoreline highway because you can see the cal tran signs that are out here this morning. they have been up and down the road for the last couple of days because this is an area that floods when the high tide comes in. this is an area drivers made to be careful for. this is something we need to watch for. the ground is sat is sat tour rated. we want to take you back live to washington, d.c.. president obama is about to

policy allowing gays to openingly serve within the military. we'll have much more on all of this and get the signing when it happens a little bit later on here on the ktvu morning news. our time now 6:34. in other news. a local man is in the hospital after being pulled from beneath the train right underneath the jack russell square. this happened at 3:30 this morning. the man just happened to be in a wheelchair. the man was able to pull the man out but had to use the jaws of life. the man was conscious and talking during the rescue. >> it was underneath the tractor section of the train which is the heavie. and we just kept having to bring more and more of the tools we had before we can lift him out. >> this was a huge train. the train was moved an hour ago. we don't have an update on the

mans condition. san francisco police are looking for more suspects in connection with a pickpocketing ring targeting muni bus riders. they arrested a 30-year-old man yesterday but investigators say he likely did not act alone. the thieves are suspected of stealing valuables from people on the 38 geary line. there have been 28 thefts reported on that route alone. our time is now 6:35. the rainstorms that prompted the closures of beaches in san mateo are a concern right now. jade hernandez is joining us live on what is happening there and why. >> reporter: good morning. the warning this morning is to stay out of the water. this is a popular area where people walk awe long side the water. this morning officials are saying stay out. also make sure that dog walkers keep all pets away from the water. the weekend storm caused health officials to close beaches. they have closed lind mar and

rock way beach and lake shore park and aquatic park. both beaches in the san mateo marina lagoon. the county test for clear are form bacteria. heavy rain this weekend sent thousands of gallons of sewer water overflowing into the streets and creeks. across the county four occurred here in san mateo. they are supposed to be posted signs with a warning for anyone near the beach. we have not seen the posted signs. part of the reason might be because it's still dark out here this morning. of course the officials the water officials are saying just stay away from the beaches at this point until further notice. reporting live jade hernandez ktvu channel 2 news. a san francisco police officer killed in the line of duty will be remembered tonight. it was four years ago today

when 28-year-old brian travera was shot by a suspect wanted on a felony warrant. officers were chasing the man on foot when he broke into a nearby garage. as officers moved to arrest him they hoped fire hitting travera. time now 6:37. let's see what is happening in our commute. our wet commute, sal. >> you said it dave and pam. wet is the keyword. we will have a few fender benders out there. we're lucky it has ban lighter than usual week because of the upcoming holiday. we are looking at a live picture here shooting back at the incline and in the background you can see the span the suspense and traffic is moving well. you can tell there is certainly a lot of people there. at the toll plaza there is not a big backup coming in. it is maybe a two minute delay if that. and no problems as you saw on the bridge. and this morning's commute

looks okay. there is a 10-15 minute bart delay. goods morning to you, sal. we are tracking showers across the bay area. but the main event is happening before the morning hours. you will see the rain move out and the clouds part and a fairly pleasant afternoon. that is after a fairly wet start. we have at the to the amounts. santa rosa .73. san francisco .45. and you can see totals still adding to the buckets right now in concord, mountain view, and san jose just over .10. here is the satellite and radar. all the activity moving in may have been an alarm clock for you. the focus right now heading out to our east. we have lingering rain shower out there. at least for this morning in the short-term. and for thursday and friday i should say high pressure returns and it looks like a dry

weather pattern developing with the sun cloud mix. we'll have to watch out for the fog. there another storm developing upstream. this will be a factor as we head into the weekend. another rainfall developing by saturday afternoon with possiblely potentially heavy rain and also gusty winds. rain clouds will linger into sunday as well. here we go with the forecast model this morning showing lingering rain showers. here we are at 6:00 along the coast and san francisco and scattered along the bay. as we do put this into motion at 9:00 you get an idea with the overall trend and coverage. we scale back on the coverage and possibility. there is still a chance in the afternoon hours by 3:00 and 4:00 and 5:00 we could have a lingering popup shower. 7:00 clouds and showers. temperatures around 50 degrees. by 12:00 we do have this 53. chance of a shower still and by mid afternoon by 3:00 a sun cloud mix with temperatures

around 55-56 degrees. we're not warming up too much. the warmest locations in the upper 50s for san jose and morgan hill around 58 degrees. two dry days for thursday and friday. once again another storm moves in by christmas day especially by the afternoon hours. another forecast check in a few hours. a new system is moving into southern california and it's already causing problems. what many people are doing right now before that next big storm hits. good morning if you're driving around the bay area, it will be tough especially this morning with all the wet roads. another traffic and weather update straight ahead. seyo pete

welcome back to the morning news. we are just learning about a mud slide in southern california triggered by a new powerful storm. it's blocking access to homes in orange county and people are asked to leave. evacuation orders are also in place for los angeles county for similar fears that's where report paul. he joins us now. >> reporter: good morning, pam. so far so good here in the foothills below the burn area that was ravaged by the station fire.

the sandbags are holding but they are not out of the woods yet because this storm is still moving through. after days of rain things are going from bad to worse in southern california. it's been raining for almost a week causing flooding and mud collides. forcing officials to issue evacuation orders. >> i cannot overemphasize the magnitude of this storm. some say more rain than we have seen in the last ten years. >> reporter: more than ten inches of rain has fallen causing accidents and some cases drivers abandon their cars and flood waters. it's all due to a serious of storms known as the pineapple express. storms have brought a dozen feet of snow. the rain has also triggered heavy flooding outside of las vegas. in the town of mesquite residents were encouraged to voluntary evacuate on thursday. for many along the west coast

you told me an interesting story how this got started. it started with a very personal story. >> yes, growing up i remember that one time our family was in need and without saying anything someone left toys and food on our front door and when i got hired with the fire department i prayed and said lord what am i supposed to do to give back? he put this in my lap and 23 years here we are. >> reporter: is this year especially tough? you have to have people donate all this stuff. are you getting less this year more families coming here? >> we are getting more families coming in need. last year some of families in line were in line to bring toys to help us and now they are in line that they need help so the economy is really bad. >> reporter: streets are blocked off here. the idea is people file in through one door. what is the order of receiving today? >> when they come in, they have

by the weekend there is another storm approaching our coastline. rain returns by christmas day. especially for the afternoon hours. all the rain showers moving across the region. look at what happened by 1:00 this morning. and right now the focus is heading out our east. we still have lingering rain showers out there. we still have this. winter weather advisory in place for lake tahoe. chains required right now on interstate 880. this advisory in place until 4:00. snowfall from 5-10 inches. here is our forecast model this morning showing lingering activity. here we are at 6:00. we'll put this into motion at 9:00. still a chance of a lingering pop up shower. not a lot of coverage here. we have to hold on to the chance of an isolated shower. we can have sunny breaks between 2:00 and 4:00. here is the plan for today. at least in the short-term. clouds and scattered showers.

welcome back to the morning news. good news. 5,000 families will get early christmas presents today when they are given toys from san jose sacred heart community center. the center set a new record this week for the largest number of food packages given out in a day. they distributed 1300 boxes of food on monday with the help of the second harvest food bank. stanford is one of the top schools for making money of inventions. they generated $65 million in

income for the university last year. that's up from $62 million from the year before. the total earnings from inventions tops over a billion dollars over the past four decades. we have been watching the commute especially close. let's check in with sal. >> right now traffic is moving a long realtively well if you are driving on the incline section of the bridge and over to the span. there are no major problems. take a look at the sunol grad. 680 traffic is moving pretty well. and if you are driving to the sierra this is a live picture at 80 truckee. it looks like they have snow removal equipment there. they don't have chain requirements on, they do have chain requirements on 80 but not on 50. they keep changing but this is a live picture at what is going on right now. let's go to mark. hi there, sal. the snowfall will continue to pick up in the sierra.
