it's 7:00. good morning. welcome to "mornings on 2." i'm kraig debris. dave clark is off. >> good morning. i'm pam cook. tori campbell is also. thank you for joining us on this thursday, december 23rd. we begin with the massive sewage spill 234 marin county. you to a million gallons of sewage has pulled into corte madera creek and the fbi has been called in to help determine if this is a serious case -- case of serious neglect or possibly environmental t errorism. claudine wong is in green bray this morning with the details. >> reporter: good morning, pam. the fbi and other agencies are trying to figure out how this happened, and crews right now are trying to figure out what happened -- try to fix what happened. you can see those crews right there, carrying the pipeline over there. where we are is kind of a s taging area and a place where

there is ongoing work to fix this ruptured line. the creek is where the crews are staned -- standing. the what the crews are trying to do is move the ruptured line and do a temporary line. one of the diversion lines are set up and there is another one just like it at college avenue. again, those are searching to -- serving for the new line. they say after this, the work for the new ruptured -- new line can get underway. let's talk about the ruptured line. why did this happen? when this pipe burst last week, they narrowed the origin down to kent middle school and when

they looked, they found huge pieces of asphalt, wire, and there was so much, they concluded this was no accident. that's why they called in the fbi. they say this is either gross negligence or some kind of environmental trim. you are talking about a good deal of sewage that's dumb out of this 800,000 gallons plus. whoever did this, they certainly want to find out what caused this and who is responsible. this fix, this diversion line where you are looking at the crews should be in place in a few hours. they have to correct the damage. it's important to note the sanitation district says at some point there's no danger to the public. they certainly want to get this fixed and get the work back underway. we'll continue to monitor the activity here. and we'll keep you updated here. live in green bray, claudine wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, claudine. 7:03. three people now are feared dead following a drive-by

shooting at south san francisco. in all, six people were shot at the corner of 8th and linden last night. ktvu's tara tara moriarty joins us from south san francisco with an update. >> reporter: good morning, k raig. this is the alleyway where the drive-by shooting occurred. this area here where the chalk is where detectives found bullet casings. they were riddled all over the alleyway. but this gives you an idea of how many shots were fired. now friends of the victim say a third third victim has died. we're still waiting to get police confirmation on that. so when we hear about that later this morning, we'll definitely pass that on to you. just after 7:00 last night, around 7:15 at the corner of 8th and linden streets, police say at least two people were killed under a hail of bullet, four people wounded after a drive-by shooting, most likely

gang-related. two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. another victim was rushed to the hospital where sources say he later died. some sources say this shooting may be tried -- tied to ongoing trouble with a rival group in san bruno. we're talking about the people that we think did it to our other friend. >> from where? >> san bruno. but we're not sure. >> a gang? >> yes. >> what gang? >> i don't know. >> reporter: three other men were wounded but received non- life-threatening injuries. and investigators do have a vague description of the s uspects. three latino males in their late teens or early 20s who were driving what appears to be a brown chevy impala with tinted windows. the model between two and 2002. police have definitely stepped up patrols and say this area is no stranger to gang violence. we're at 8th 57 linden. this is a couple of blocks away

from highway 101. so obviously a very easy getaway for the shooters. if you have any information, contact south san francisco police. we're live in south san francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. cleanup is underway in san diego, where severe storms left a mess of the city. the continuous -- the continuous rain caused a scary situation in the mission valley area. three hotels and an apartment complex were evacuated. take a look at this. the premiere inn was the worst hit. that's where more than 50 people had to be ferried on life rafts to higher ground. >> it was really scary. i thought we were gonna go straight into the river. very scary. >> now, at one point the river reached 14 feet. that's the highest point in 29 years. the water also knocked out power and submerged cars. >> a similar scene outside of

san diego. an animal shelter got surrounded by around the rain. workers managed to move horses and other larger animals to higher grounds and out of harm's way. smaller animals like cats and dogs were put into kennels inside the building. >> today is a getaway for many holiday travelers. we shot these pictures a short while ago at oakland international airport. it's very busy out there, long lines and holiday travelers t rying to get out of town for the chris nas holiday. we just checked -- christmas holiday. we just czeched with airport officials. and there are no -- checked with airport officials. there are no delays. 11.5million californians say they will be at least 50 miles away from home this holiday season. travel experts say flying numbers are up 3% from last y ear. fewer carpools are crossing the bay bridge.

according to statistics from the metropolitan transportation commission, 4.2 million c arpoolers crossed the bridge during the 2010 fiscal year which is from july 2009 until june 2010. now, that is the decrease of 7.8% from the year before. the number of total cars c rossing the bay bridge also dropped this year from 40.1 million to 38.6 million. >> the toll went up on j uly 1st. so that's why -- >> yeah. a lot of people -- fewer cars. more people probably taking transportation, sal, and also u nfortunately, with the economy, more people are out of work. >> fewer people going to work. >> yeah. it really has been a difference that we've noticed. today it's obviously different for a different reason. did i make myself clear? let's start again. today is almost a holiday. almost. we'll show you that it's light at the bay bridge toll plaza. tomorrow will be lighter. let's face it. a lot of people have today off. they will have tomorrow off. not everyone but you probably

mbassy. but they say that was a false alarm. police are check all embassies in the italian capital. tensions are heightening as north korea continues to be changing positions on retaliation against its southern neighbor. the north says it's ready to launch a sacred war against south korea, accusing it of deliberately push, the two nations to the brink of war. earlier this week, north korea said it would not respond to any provocations. sen ton -- tensions have been soaring between the two countries. president obama is taking a break from politics with a christmas vacation in his home state of hawaii right now. he arrived in honolulu earlier this morning, accompanied by two lawmakers from the island. the president will spend his time with wife michelle and daughters sasha and marie -- malia. they are scheduled to return back on the mainland on j

millions of skype users are still experiencing problems this morning, although service has been restored for some users. the lux. burg-based-- the luxembourg company, they've been r e- creating these connections as fast as they can. just-released figures show the sale of new homes climbed 5.5% last month -- month. that's an indication that the housing market continues to show stability but at weak levels. the pace of sales was 21% below november of last year. well, in berkeley right now, a 26-year-old holiday tradition continues at this hour as various community groups gather to give out food baskets for those in need.

here is a live picture. take a look at that. volunteers from the uc berkeley and others began putting the baskets of food together just a while ago. they are filling them up with the turkey, from fresh produce and packaged food, enough to feed about eight people. the group plans to give away about 250 of those baskets of food before the day's end. that's nice. well, coming up -- the reason police had to be called to control crowds inside malls from sacramento to the bay area overnight. plus santa's rein dear made a stop -- reindeer made a stop in the bay area. good morning. if you are driving on 680 southbound, you can tell traffic is moving along. we'll tell you more about the morning commute straight ahead.

zoo this morning. take a look. santa's reindeer made an appearance. the annual reindeer romp is underway. the only bay area zoo where people can see real-live reindeer. they will be on display until january 1st. well, the footlocker at the sun valley mall in concord will reopen this morning but that's after shutting down during the midnight release of the air jordans. the store stayed open but police say the crowd got out of hand. in sacramento, hundreds of people lined up to get their hands on the popular shoe. crowds stood in line overnight. there were no reports of any problems. the air jordans are $175 a pair. there is a possible legal roadblock in the doyle drive project. council is heading up main

construction because there's been this onemergency emergency repair for the last few weeks. but this spill and rupture takes us to a whole new level. this is a huge spill. as the fbi and other agencies are trying to figure out how this happened. we're here at bon air because these crews you are looking at right now are busy trying to figure out how to fix this p it. across the street there's the cota ma remember dah creek and what the crews are trying to do is divert the sewage away from the ruptured line and on to a temporary line. that line is the yellow pipeline you can see laying there. that rupture is being described as construction debris that e nded up in the pipeline. that caused 800,000 gallons of debris to spill out in the creek and the city. while it's being fixed, it's causing street closures. it's a mess. >> magnolia is completely --

completely blocked off. if you go one way, you can't turn around and go the other way and it smells. it really smells today. >> reporter: how patient are you for this solution to be put in place? >> reporter: well, they have been working on that creek that i usually walk to since september. they have three diversion lines they've set up. there's also another one on college avenue. all of these lines are called diversion lines and all are designed to take the pressure off the main line so that the repairs can be made. again the fbi has been called in regulatory agencies have been alerted to this problem out here because officials really believe this was either done on purpose or -- or just really a -- a case of gross negligence. you can see them working acrosss the street. we're gonna continue to monitor the work. crews say they should be out here for the next couple of hours. live in green brae, claudine

wong, ktvu channel 2 news. >> we also just learned that san jose's almaden quicksilver county park will remain shut down at least through the weekend as a result of methane gas released into the creek. the problem was caused by an overflowing tanker which released the substance into the creek at the northern end of the park. tests are being conducted on the site but there's still no word whether there's danger to humans or animals. the park's department closed a few trails near the entrance until further notice. vallejo police still don't know why a woman was on interstate 80 when she was hit and killed last night. it happened around 9:00 between redwood and tennessee streets. before the woman was hit, they received reports, the police, of a woman walking with a blanket around her and waving

her arms. a body was discovered on top of rocks and martin luther king shoreline park. police say the woman's throat was slit, she suffered gunshot wounds and there were defensive knife wounds on her arm. police are trying to describe the victim. she's described as a heavy-set african-american woman in her 250s or 30s -- 0s or 30s. jerry brown will be sworn in on january 3rd at sacramento's historic memorial auditorium. that's right across the street from brown's mu home in midtown sacramento. his transition team says it are be -- it will be a low-key, no frills ceremony. california's next lieutenant-governor could remain mayor of san francisco a few days longer than first planned. gavin newsom plans to delay his swearing in until he's confident san francisco has a strong successor to replace him as m ayor. the board members meet january 4th and will choose a mayor to

fill the final year of newsom's term. this morning, the labor department had cheerier than expected news about u nemployment. 420,000 people filed for f irst- time unemployment benefits but that's down 3,000 from the week before. analysts had expected initial claims to creep up by a thousand and there are now 4 million -- 4,60 million people receiving benefits. u.p.s. says this could be the best season ever. they believe they delivered 24 million packages in envelope. that's a record. that's up 9% from last year and a whopping 60% increase from a normal business day. u.p.s. says most of the d eliveries came from online retailers like amazon, backing up the forecast

that cyber will hit a new high this season. if you -- if you are one of the last-minute shoppers, good news. some stores are staying open 24 hours a day. jade hernandez is at kmart in san leandro. how long are the lines? >> well, there are people coming in and out definitely. how long -- how does a discount retailer entice customers right before christmas. i will tell you how they offer a 64-hour sale. this kmart here in san leandro opened up at 6:00 yesterday and they are not go no -- gonna close until 10:00 p.m. tomorrow. you can see there are employees here. there are even customers in the back. we were live an hour ago at the pleasant hill toys 'r' us where the doors here will remain open until 10:00. this kmart as i mentioned is gonna do the same thing. they are offering the sale t oday. last-minute shopping is expected to pique and help

customers making last-minute purchases. they made the decision to open early or remain open until the day before christmas. for the night owls or early birds, the overnight or early shopping may pay off deend f eld -- depending upon the item bought. the shopping center trade group estimates some 23 million shoppers will be out today. some retailers are doing all they can to take advantage of the traffic. the national retail federation, the hard to pass up sales have motivated shoppers today. lay away helps. one shopper told me she does what she can to make sure her kids got what they want on christmas morning. >> that's the thing. with the economy the way it is now, you don't want to not to give christmas gifts -- gifts. you want to -- the kids are looking for interest gifts and everything and the economy being as bad as it is, sometimes it's hard to give exactly what they want for christmas. so yeah, the good sales, they are drawing us in.

property. investigators say the driver got clearance to enter the gated community because he was going to visit a neighbor of the f ormer president. there's no no damage to the home and mr. and mrs. bush were never in harm's way. the driver was redetained and the -- detained and the car involved in the accident was t owed away. cleanup starts today after a series of storms left a path of destruction behide. bob decastro joins us live. good morning, bob. okay. bob is not there. frank anthony sousa is expected to enter a plea. he's accused of killing fellow inmate edward shaffer at san quentin last july. shaffer was serving time for a dui crash that killed a girl and sousa is there for killing

a homeless man. homicide detectives in antioch say a man shot in the head has died. the victim is 24-year-old arnold mercleroy of pittsburg. -- muckleroy of pittsburg. police say he got into a green ford escort where people were waiting. police say muckleroy was shot almost immediately and then pushed into the streets where officers found him. let's go to back to southern california. that's where a series of storms have left a path of destruction. that's where bob decastro is. bob? >> reporter: hey, kraig. yeah, this is one of many neighborhoods now under a lot of mud. cleanup underway. sanbernardino declaring a state of emergency. you can see the front loaders out here. they have guys with shovels out here just trying to dig everything out. this path, this front-loader. this is a home that was

severely damaged by the mudslide. the entire first floor is actually buried in mud. the whole hillside came down yesterday morning as the storms continue to plow through here. there was a family of six intide and the woman inside tells us that she heard a roar, a crackle and looked outside and she actually saw the hillside coming down. she grabbed all of her kids. they ran to the second floor of that home and you might be able to check out that ladder over there. firefighters had to take a lad he and rescue all of the kids. unfortunately, they have a lot of pets inside, a dog, bird, all of them were buried underneath. and the family is at a red cross shelter. they also tell us they don't have insurance. what they believe happened here. if you take a look the up hill, there's been some grading here, the indian reservation nearby constructing some homes here and they believe that made the h illside unstable and u

nfortunately p the insurance -- unfortunately, the insurance company said they have to settle this with the indian reservation. might be very difficult to do. the mud all the way down the street and there is a school down here, about $750,000 damage done to the school. not in session right now. but certainly something they have to reconcile when they come back. a lot of rescue in the area s aying -- saying they responded to over 50 rescues. this is an area that typically receives about 13 inches a year. a lot of cleanup underway here in -- >> bob, let me ask you s omething. typically when there is a lot of fire during the summer that -- when people get a lot of water during the winter, you are say there was construction in the area and that might have contributed to the mudslides. >> you know, there's so many mud slides all over southern

california, kraig, this is just one of them. this neighborhood believes that the grading project is what has caused this mudslide to be unstable. the area in la canada/flintridge under evacuation orders. fortunately, that held up. but they have debris basins that hold the water. there are no such debris basins that hold the water and so the water just flows down. literally the family says they are surprised this home is still standing and are surprised it didn't just buckle over. >> thank you, bob, reporting live from san bernardino county. rutgers university says it's not responsible for a student's suicide, that's after the p arents of the student bullying said they might sue. the student jumped from the george washington bridge last november after another student

marin county. neighbors are reoctoberring to news up to a million gammens of sewage has poured into corte madera creek. claudine wong is in green bea this morning with the latest. >> reporter: well this, is where all. repair work is taking place. take a look behind me. you can see that yellow pipeline on the back of that truck is just the latest bit of pipeline that's being brought in. they are moving this pipeline basically around this corner here at corte madera creek. that's the temporary pipeline. they are trying to divert the service around so the repair on the ruptured pipeline can take place. they say this part of the repair work will take another hour or so this morning.

in morning in south san francisco police are s earching for suspects in a drive-by shooting. three people are feared dead. three others injured. tara moriarty caught up with people in the neighborhood who want to -- who are very upset about this. we've seen a dozen people drive by and walk by. you can see there is a group standing over near the flowers. friends tell us that a third person died at the hospital after he was gunned down here in this alley last night. we've not received official confirmation from police but we have spoken to family members by the -- by phone. neighbors have been lighting candles. the drive-by shooting happened just after 7:00 last night at the cover of 8th and linden streets. police say at least two people were killed under a hail of bullets and four wounded after a drive-by shooting possibly g ang-related.
