maze. it's light traffic approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. if you are drive into san francisco it should be a nice drive. it's 6:00. let's go back to dave and pam. there is a search this morning for a robbery suspect who created a dangerous situation for holiday shoppers at the valley fair mall. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty just joined us. tara. >> reporter: it's one of the busiest shopping days of the year. it's amazing that police say no one was hurt. this crime unfold the yesterday just after 5:00 when a man wearing a trench coat with a rifle hidden inside tried to rob a clerk. first he hit up the clothing store inside the valley fair mall. for some reason he didn't follow through. he tried to attack -- carjack actually a woman in the parking garage. next he moved to the santa

clara side of the mall where he tried to carjack another car. he ran into the mens warehouse and held up the clerk and took some cash. most shoppers were unaware of what was going on. >> he had it concealed in a trench coat. i think that kind of prevented some major panic. that's not to under estimate the violence in the nature of this incident and we are definitely taking this very seriously. >> reporter: in the end the suspect raced over to seasal street where he carjacked someone at knife point. now police do not know at the time why the suspect made so many foiled attempts at the robberies and carjacks. they do not know if he was mentally unstabled or if the victims got away. we are live in san jose tara

moriarty ktvu channel 2 morning news. dozens in the east bay will not be getting their christmas gift during a bold daylight robbery. thieves hijacked a fedex truck. police later found the truck but at least 60 holiday packages are still missing. ktvu news spoke to the fedex driver. he said one of the thieves pushed him, jumped into his truck and drove away. he says he was not physically physically hurt but is unhappy about the holiday crime. >> are you worried about the packages and people will not get their christmas gifts? >> yeah tomorrow is christmas day. sorry for everybody. >> senior managers were upmost of the night at the fedex office trying to figure out who's christmas packages were stolen. that work will continue today. what a difference a day makes at bay area airports.

we had a crew check out oakland airport a few minutes ago there are very few travelers. we checked the same time yesterday you can see look at that line stretching out the door. however officials say they are still expecting larger crowds but later today. similar situation right now at the airport in san francisco and in san jose. and if you are traveling to antioch airport today keep in mind a new terror alert has been issued by the department of homeland security. no security measures will be taken but tsa workers will take a closer look at insulated beverage containers. they say terrorists could hold explosives in things like thermoses. they say there is no intelligence about the active terror plot involving those items. the amtrak station at jacqueline square was bustling as people boarded trains for their holiday destinations. some travelers we spoke to said they plan to ride the train to

christmas. they have the bins here and they are collecting toys all day long hoping to get up to 15,000. they say the need is greater this year than it has ever been. san francisco always steps up to the plate when the folks find out how many kids are in need. these bins were empty when they started this morning. they are full now and they hope that keeps growing. they've had a lot of people help them out today. luxor cab will be giving free pickups to the toys. if you have a toy they will come pick it up. i want to show you, we want to walk outside. santa will be here. you know lefty o'doul hired the santa that used to be at macy's and now he has his own spot here. santa will be coming in a few hour. he will sit in that chair right there. they want to give a big check to the san francisco firefighter program. they will be doing that later today. they have toys in there. this will be an event that goes

on all day long. they will be out here outside just trying to get everyone into the holiday spirit and getting everyone out here. now, it won't just be santa. we also have a lot of people coming down here to help out. you will have the firefighters down here and you will have our own sal castaneda who comes down here and a big part of this. sal, i know this is something you take part in. and it really is remarkable to see all the people as they really just kind of step up to the plate and come in here and help out. >> yeah. and claudine pardon me. the toys they get stacked up as you know inside there. hopefully by the end of the day we will have a wall of toys that the fire department will deliver tomorrow. >> that would be a good problem to have. >> wouldn't it be? thank you claudine for tossing it here. ly be out here later today at

of 50s here in fact mostly 50s for mountain view and san jose. mountain view tops out at 60. here is the look ahead and for christmas day there is a rain cloud. chance of showers into sunday. especially for the morning hours. another weather update in a little bit. this morning police in san francisco are still looking for the gunman responsible for a deadly drive-by shooting. three young men killed three others wounded. it happened at the intersection of lyndon and 8th. witnesses spotted three gunman racing away from the scene in a dark chevy impala. they believe it's tied to an escalating war. police in palo alto are looking for advice in a recent string of robbery. there have been 15 reported. in some cases the victims were thrown to the ground.

police say if you are ever approached by a robber, the best thing to do is comply. >> there is nothing that you own that you have on you person is worth fighting over. if a suspect demands your purse take it off and give it to them. >> in the most recent incident on wednesday night a woman was robbed right near her home. police say they are looking for several suspects. officers officers are working overtime to get them off the street. there is a $10,000 reward to solve the crimes. some taxpayers may have to delay filing their returns. what the irs now has to do because of a recently passed tax law.

welcome back to the morning news. there is a man hunt going on in mumbai india right now for four men believed to be plotting carrying out a terrorist attack. indian authorities say the men belonged to the same pakistan military group that took them under siege two years ago. it's believed the group may strike during the holiday season. police have set up check points and ated patrols to public places -- and added patrols to track down these suspects. a 39-year-old man was tried to avid local police and drove

through a hurt check point the president is renting. the secret service says the first family was never in danger and that this was not an attack on president obama. firefighters at a menlo park fire station say they are relieved that congress passed the health care bill for first responders and survivors of the september 11 terror attacks. division chief frank suffers from a respiratory disease and chronic cough. he said he's never had these health problems. he estimates 70% of the team he worked with also had health problems but he says he wouldn't trade in his experience. >> i'm so glad i did it. i would do it again. if they called me today i would leave anywhere in the country to do my job. >> the 9/11 health care bill will provide up to $4.2 billion in new assistance. it also sets up a victim compensation fund that gives monetary funds to those that

fall ill and loses wages. president obama is expected to sign the bill in law. the federal judge that stopped executions in california four years ago plans to visit the death chamber at san quentin. he says he wants to hold a hearing at the prison in february to help decide if california's revised lethal injection procedure is constitutional. in 2006 he ruled it was unconstitutional based in part finding the old death chamber was too small, poorly it will and outdated. jerry brown plans to reduce the lobbying force on capitol hill. brown is cutting the staff in california's d.c. office from six to two. the governor elects transition team hasn't confirmed the cut bus reportedly this is in an effort to save money. the controversial local hire ordnance will become law

after mayor gavin newsom decided not to approve it. newsom returns legislation to board of supervisors unsigned at first saying he had reservations about part of it. the san mateo county board of supervisors wanted him to veto the measure saying it would hurt worker there is. in oakland parking meter fines are going up in the new year. a violation increase will start january 3rd. that would raise the cost from $55 to $58. the increase was supposed to take place this month. but officials delayed collecting the fees to encourage shoppers. new tax changes could cause filing delays for taxpayers. they need to reprogram computers because of a recently passed tax law. the irs says it will be mid to late february before it can

accept 2010 tax returns. all right let's check back in with sal. pretty quiet once again on the roads but airports, malls, other places are probably busy. >> that's right. it surprised me how busy it was going home. 101 was a mess trying to get out of san francisco to the east bay. what happens people come in and shop and they have to all go home together. today that little rush happened around 3:00 if everything is like it was last year. let's go outside and take a look at 880. that looks good. there is no problems driving to the oakland international airport and no problems if you are on 580. also this morning we are look at the sunol grade. we have the nrod site up.

you can go to the norad track santa website. it looks like his location is japan. the next stop is kayota japan. it's clever how they have santa hooked up with a gps to know where he is. at 6:18 hello mark. that's very exciting. right now it's 15 below at the north pole. with the wind it feels like minus 36. you can see right now we do have overall fair skies. you can't see it. we do have fair skies across the region. as far as current numbers the fog right now targeting parts of the north bay up into sonoma county. and the forecast for today as we take a look at the current numbers across the bay area if we can switch off computers we do have most areas in the 40s. the coolest locations in the mid to upper 30s. santa rosa reporting patchy fog. livermore 38 and san francisco in the mid 40s.

right around 45. here's the satellite you will notice that system stacking up offshore. at least for today. a few high clouds but tomorrow for christmas day we are talking about rain and wind. the weather service issuing this. it kicks in tomorrow morning. wind advisory this in place for the north bay hills the coastal areas and santa cruz mountains. you can see the clouds out there. we will put this into motion. 6:00 tonight high clouds and by tomorrow morning a chance of a few light rain showers. the main action that moves in tomorrow afternoon. moderate to heavy rain. the gusty winds. this moves out to the sierra as well. especially saturday night. traveling to the mountains it looks fine. watch out nor patchy dense fog. even in the central valley we do have a fog advisory. for saturday a chance of snow especially for tomorrow night. snowfall will be picking up and sunday off own an snow showers.

bay area bridges right now looking pretty good here as you drive across any of these bridges. the bay bridge san mateo, richmond and golden gate the traffic is light. be sure to keep your speed within the acceptable level. let's go back to the desk. richmond police hope new photos and a $10,000 reward will help them find two gunmen that robbed a credit union. it happened december 12th at collins and curry streets. police say the two robbers pointed guns at employees as

they disclosed -- they robbed an undisclosed amount of cash. animal control officers are still looking for a pit bull that attacked a woman. authorities say two dogs attacked susan in front of her home. one of the dogs was found the next night. the remaining pit bull is described of having a mixture of brown, black, and white colored hair and may have injuries above its left eye. people in southern california have started assessing the damage caused by days of flooding and mud slides. this week's storms have caused an estimated $70 million in damage in highland, river side county, and orange county. more rain is expected tomorrow night but forecasters say it will move out quickly. a state of emergency though has been declared in a total of nine counties including los

angeles, orange, and santa barbara. the san francisco 49ers are staying at candle stick park for four more seasons. that's following a surprising deal announced yesterday. the 49ers are dropping a $60 million maintenance plan in exchange the city will provide millions of dollars in rent credit to help the 49ers fix up the 50-year-old stadium at candle stick park. >> over a decade we have agreed to disagree about the stadium. we will invest $4.5 million for candle stick. i can assure you every fan agrees is needed. >> the deal also helps pave the way for 49ers to consider staying in san francisco and building a new stadium at hunters point. right now the team plans to move to santa clara in 2015 one year after this candle stick park deal expires. well it is christmas eve but it is no holiday for hundredsover police officers who will be patrolling -- for

every year. i'm kraig debro. >> good morning i'm pam cook. markets are closed today. right in the middle of the busy holiday season holiday travel season a new terror alert has been issued. jade hernandez has more. >> reporter: we can tell you right now the lines have gotten long at the american airlines terminal. many of the passengers we spoke to did not snow about tsa latest alert concerning thermoses or beverage containers. we told you an hour ago that you would hear about the new safety precautions. >> it is a shock. but you can't take that through it. it has been very popular recently. everybody carries the thermoses. if i'm thinking of the right thing it's the metal thermos

bottles. it makes sense they check them i suppose. >> reporter: the alert is fairly new. tso only announce -- tsa only announced a thermos alert on the planes. tsa is not banning thermoses aboard any aircraft but anyone taking a thermos through will see additional measures take ton insure safety. asthe duty manager told us they are not doing anything specific. we contacted the tsa office but due to the holiday the office is closed. according to the website they say they will carefully be monitoring information related to terrorist tactics and usually christmas eve is a busy travel day. 98,000 passengers are expected to travel through sfo. those numbers are late bit

down. last year they had 22,000 passengers. they traveled specifically on this day because they were hoping that the lines wouldn't be too long. we'll have more on the story coming up for you. live from sfo this morning jade hernandez. a scary situation for some christmas shoppers at valley fair mall. police say a man armed with a rifle robbed a clerk during one of the busiest days of the holiday shopping season. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is now in san jose outside the mall with more on the investigation. good morning tara. >> reporter: good morning. we were able to speak to san jose police this morning. they are actively searching for the gunman. we are here at the valley fair mall where the suspect struck last night. here is a look at some video. fortunately there was no mass hysteria created by the crime free. that's because the man hid his rifle in a trench coat.

he didn't follow through with the robbery. he then tried to carjack in a woman in the nordstrom parking garage but did not follow through with it. next he moved to the santa clara side of the mall where he tried to carjack another shopper. he left out stealing a car and ran into the mens warehouse and held up a clerk at gunpoint. police are trying to figure out why they made so many unfoiled attempt. >> something frustrated his attempts. in the end he successfully completed an armed robbery and completed a carjacking. >> reporter: now after the crime spree, the suspect raced over to seasal street where he carjacked someone at knife point. police describe it as a why nissan altima with license plate number 6nda586. it was the busiest shopping day of the year.

they are lucky that no one was hurt. we're live here in san jose tara moriarty. the chp has an important warning for anyone heading out to a christmas eve party. they begin its holiday crack down on drunk driving at 6:00 tonight. there will be sobriety check points around the bay area. this maximum enforcement period will continue into the new year. last night officers from half a dozen law enforcement agencies man adds dui check point in central san rafael. >> it's a big deal. hopefully it will make an impression. >> there will be more than 200 drunk driving check points in california during this two-week maximum enforcement period. cal osha is investigating the death of a man crushed by a dump truck. the accident took place at a construction yard. investigators say the man was

putting fuel in a small tractor when the truck backed into him. he was declared aed dead at the scene. yesterday santa clara county da office announced it did not have enough evidence to charge 64-year-old jay kapasi. that is after dozens of students complained that he touched them inappropriately. the sewage spill is much bigger than thought. three million gallons of sewage poured into the creek in the partly sunny week. rainwater and sewage spilled out of manhole covers. more leaked during the second spill on wednesday. they found large amounts of debris stuck into a pipe and where the construction company

was working. some did overflow in neighborhoods and some that live there a are upset they were not notified. >> i have two young children. it's an issue for us. we want to keep what up with what the prognosis is. >> signs were posted in the neighborhoods. officials said they told as many people as possible but there is no system in place to let every resident know. they are not sure if it was a deliberate act but the marin county sheriff department and the fbi are both involved in the investigation. many of san francisco's homeless willnot go hungry this christmas eve thanks to glide memorial church. for the 12th year they are partnering up with prime rib to serve to 3,000 people. lunch will be served from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. and that is once again glide memorial church on ellis street. ♪ i want to wish you a merry

welcome back. police in vallejo hope surveillance tapes will help lead to a deadly attack. investigators say 35-year-old aaron rudolph was stabbed to death following a fight. police are looking for three suspects. take a look at the surveillance video. two men and a woman. these photos were taken inside the store. witnesses say the three suspects sped off in a bmw with tinted windows. a christmas tree is likely to blame for an apartment fire in san pablo. the fire started around 6:00 yesterday morning. officials say the tree was blocking the primary exit from the apartment so the victims had to escape through a window.
