police say a man brought a rifle to the valley fair mall and robbed a clerk. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty joins us now from san jose, from the mall with more on the search for the suspect. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. police are in the process of locating surveillance video from inside and outside the valley fair mall here in san jose. they hope to review that later today to try to get an image of this gunman because the only description they have to go on at this point is he is in his 20s or 30s. now, the suspect struck just after 5:00 last night. the man first targeted the club monaco clothing store. for some reason he didn't follow through with the robbery. he then tried to carjack a woman in the nordstrom parking lot but did not follow through with it. then he went to the santa clara mall and tried to unsuccess official carjack another shopper near the wells fargo bank. he then made his way to the m

en's warehouse shop. >> as opposed to an active s hooting incident where he comes in with a weapon brandished and is waving it around scaring everybody, he it had under his coat. >> reporter: he went to cecil street and carjacked somebody to get his getaway. the license plate number is 6 n da 586. it's a white nissan. police are trying to figure out why the gunman made so many f oiled attempts. they don't know if he is mentally unstable or if the victims got away. all of that is under investigation. if you do spot this car, you are urged to call 911. we're here in san jose, tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. thank you, tara. there is a new terror alert. it involves insulated

beverages. tsa workers are saying e xplosives could be hidden in these containers. passengers we spoke to this morning were not aware of the alert. >> it is kind of a shock. yeah. >> it is kind of a shock that you can't take that through, b ut -- >> officials stress there's no intelligence about an active terror plot involving those items. well, many retailers are calling today fantastic friday because of the rush of people expected to hit the stores for last-minute christmas deal. some bay area malls will have special hours today. the great mall in milpitas and san francisco's westfield mall will be open from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. the national retail federation expects the best year, reaching $450 billion. in oakland, police officers are bringing much-appreciated holiday cheer to those in need. it's the continuation of a 3 0-

and locations where these people live and what we do is we p ackage up the presents and bring them to them on chris mans eve morning. >> reporter: what's it like to be able to be part of -- to be apart of something really positive and reach out to the community in this way? >> it's really good. if you look around, you can see that we actually bring our children here. we want to instill in them, the giving and community and how we feel about this community and the community we serve and how much we care about it. a lot of us bring our kids and we put them to work and we have them putting toys in cars and we go deliver everything. so it's --is really good for us to give back to the community that we serve. >> and the reactions you get when they come with bags full of presents? >> we not only comes with bags of presents. we come with food. but the reactions are very good. and this year more than ever was a year that we actually maxed out. a lot of people are in need this year and we realize that and we give a lot of gifts this year and a lot of food.

the the lake tahoe tourist industry is happy with the weather and the calendar this year. the fresh snow in the last few days coupled with the break in the weather the day before christmas means more tourists are headed to the sierra. the national weather service reports more than 70 inches of snow has fallen at tahoe so far. the amount is just short of the all-time record for this time of the year. ski lodge reservations are up 3% compared to last year. tahoe business owners say good early-season conditions that helps them for the rest of the season. >> very nice. well, there is a warning for people living along the coast. why they are being urged to take notes of people and cars they see in their neighborhood. also, the island security breach . i'm stationed in kandahar,

treasury department has granted 10,000 lances -- 10,000 licenses to american companies to tell products to those countries who it is believed to have ties to terrorists. most licenses of these companies were allowed licenses allowing trade. as part of it one u.s. company was allowed to build on a pipeline job to help iran sell natural gas. the u.s. census bureau may have under underaccounted -- undercounted 1.5 million people. census figures released this week showed california to have 37.3 million residents. if true, the discrepancy could lost the -- cost the state billions of dollars in federal aid and a possible increase. california governor-elect jerry brown plans to reduce the

prosecutors have decided not to file charges against the

san jose teacher, despite the fact that a dozen elementary students have complained that he inappropriately touched them. the teacher has denied any w rongdoing. san francisco police and animal control officers have been searching street by street for a pit bull that attacked a woman. officers are checking a three to five-mile radius from where the attack took place on white sand drive monday night. authorities say two dogs a ttacked the woman right in front of her home. one of the dogs was found tuesday night and is still being held by animal services. the remaining pit bull is described as having a mixture of brown, black and white- colored hair and may have injuries above its left eye. we now know how much toyota will pay to settle a lawsuit over one of its vehicles it was having problems with. toyota has agreed to pay $ 10 million to a family of the four

a new terror alert has been issued by homeland security. jade hernandez is live at san francisco international airport this morning with details on that. jade? >> reporter: good morning. the new alert is fairly new from tsa. in fact, a handful of travelers we spoke to this morning did not know about the terror alert on use of therm acs on planes. but one passenger indicated this was not unexpected. >> i don't carry any drinks through. i think it's slightly r idiculous. but i mean, given -- given past experience, i guess, it -- i guess it feels like it'sness. >> reporter: the tsa announced

yesterday, they will be d ouble- checking therm acs. more than three ounces of liquid are not allowed. but anyone taking a therm -- thermos through are band. sfo's duty manager told us this morning, the airplane in general is not doing anything specific due to the alert. we also contacted the tsa office a few hours ago. but due to the holiday, the office is closed. all questions are being referred to their website. usually christmas day is busy travel day. 98,000 passengers are expected through sfo today. numbers are slightly down from last year. travelers this morning say the experience has been smooth t oday. reporting live at sfo this

morning, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade, for the u pdate. at the oakland international airport, there are no delays right now. earlier this morning there were very few travelers. much different scene from yesterday when, take a look, the line stretched out the doors. however, an official at oakland international said they are still expecting crowds later in the day, a similar situation right now at the airports in san jose and, of course, sfo. well, around 2,000 people have been evacuated this morning from part of charles segal airport in paris. snow accumulated on the roof and the frills closed it and -- officials closed it and moved passengers to another area. the airport is also running low on de-icing fluid, so they are asking airlines to cancel half their flights. there is a search this morning for a man wanted for a frightening crime spree at a

south bay valley fair mall. the incident happened yesterday evening. police say the suspect first t ried to rob a store at gunpoint but that robbery failed. he then acrofted -- accosted some showers before successfully robbing a men's store. he made his way to cecil street and carjacked a car there. a live report, next hour. thieves hijacked a fed-ex truck filled with gifts. it happened at brookdale and cap in oakland yesterday afternoon. police later recovered the stolen truck. but at least 60 holiday packages are missing. ktvu spoke with the fed-ex driver yesterday and he said one of the thieves pushed him, j umped into his truck and drove away. he was not physically hurt but he's still sad about this holiday heart itless crime. >> are you worried about

everybody else's packages? >> yeah, because of -- yes, tomorrow is christmas day. sorry for everybody. >> senior managers were up most of the night at the fed-ex office in san leandro trying to figure out who whose christmas packages were stolen. that work will continue today. calosha is investigating the death of a man who was r ush -- who was crushed by a dump truck. the accident took place yesterday morning. investigators say the man was putting fuel in a small tractor when the truck backed over him. he was declared dead on the scene. his name has not been released. we have new information on a story we've been following all week from sonoma county. the preliminary autopsy report indicates that the woman whose body was found in a minivan submerged in a russian river appears to have drowned. 62-year-old phyllis bin was from southern california. she was last seen driving in the minivan from a restaurant in jenner where she had dinner

with friends on friday night. the sewage we reported yesterday, is much bigger than first thought. officials say as much as 3 million gallons of sewage p oured into corte madera this week. rain water and sewage spilled out of manhole covers in k entfield last week. during the cleanup of last w eek's spill, workers found large amounts of debris stuck in the pipe and at the site where a construction company was w orking. some sewages did overflow. some neighbored say they are kind of upset they weren't notified. >> my family's right here. we have -- i have two young children and we want to keep abreast of the prognosis of the drainage. >> signs were posted in the neighborhood. officials say they told as many as possible and they admit there's no system in place to

tentative deal announced yesterday. the 49ers are dropping a $ 60 million maintenance claim against the city in exchange. the city will provide millions of dollars in credits to help the 49ers fix up the stadium. that would include fixing the seats and cleaning up the bathrooms. >> over a decade we agreed to disagree where it will invest over $4.5 million for the next season in candlelight -- in candlestick, which i can assure you is needed. >> the 49ers still hope to move to santa clara in the 2010 season, one year after this candlestick park deal expires. it's bowl time for college football fans and the ncaa has made its ruling at a scandal at ohio state.

fire officials are reminding people to be careful about where they put their christmas trees. two people were hurt after their tree caught fire yesterday. officials say they had to crawl through a window because their tree was blocking their escape. the fire department wants it to remind people to keep christmas trees away from exit paths and water them daily. richmond police hope new toe toes and a $10,000 reward

will help them find two gunmen that robbed a credit union. 245 happened december 12th at the credit union at collins and curry. police say the two robbers p ointed guns at employees as they stole an undisclosed amount of cash. take a look at the surveillance video. here's the sketch. they are described as both latino men, in their 20s, about 5'5" and weighing up to 150 pounds. a holiday tradition that started in richmond to help people in need is expanding to oakland. the annual event will be taking place tomorrow, on christmas. organizers will be giving away free food and toys at three different locations. people will be served at nevin community center. organizers say they hope to help 700 people this year. well, the construction workers on the bay bridge are d oing their part to get you in the holiday spirit. take a look at this. we want to -- we want to show you this this morning. they've decorated the 33 -- 3

it appears that he covered a very large amount of space in a very short amount of time. police say his behavior was extremely erratic. he started in the mall that you see behind me. he hiup a store, came up here. he hot of -- sort of hopscotched around and hit several places in this vicinity. then he jumps across the street, hitting up a store there, and a block away from that point, he made his getaway behind that building. now, a lot of people had no idea that a gunman was on the loose because he had hidden a rifle inside of his trench coat. the suspect struck just after 5:00 last night. first he hit up the club mono co clothing -- monoco clothing score. for some reason he didn't follow through on the -- with that r obbery. he tried to carjack a woman in the nordstrom parking lot but didn't follow through. then he moved to the santa clara mall and failed at a carjack near the wells fargo bank. then he made his way to a men's warehouse and held up the clerk

at gunpoint taking some cash. police are trying to figure out why so many of his attempts to steal got botched. >> maybe mentally unstable, maybe the victims were getting away successfully. something frustrated his attempts. but in the end, he successfully completed an armed robbery and successfully completed a c arjacking. >> the suspect raced over to cecil street where he carjacked someone at knifepoint and ultimately he made his getaway. police describe that car as a white nissan altima. now, police are in the process of looking over surveillance video and they hope to be able to freeze-frame an image that they can release to the public much later today. right now, all -- all they have to go on as far as a description goes is this man happens to be in his 20s or 30s. so very little information at this point. but if you do spot that car you are urged to call 911.

homeland security has issued a new terror alert in this busy holiday season. jade injury is in san francisco with all of the details. >> the long lines here at the american airlines terminal airlines have gotten longer. many passengers we spoke to within the past hour didn't know about tsa's latest alert concerning services or insulated beverage containers. here's what they had to say about the safety precautions. >> it's kind of a shock but you can't take -- everybody carries those thermoses on campus. so it makes sense they check them, i suppose. >> reporter: the alert is fairly new. the tsa only announced y esterday, the terror alert on the planes. the agency contends terrorists might try to conceal explosives

inside. right now no specific incident is being identified as a reason that tsa agents have to watch out for the services. the airport in general is not d oing anything specific due to the alert. but we've contacted the tsa office a few hours ago. due to the holiday, the office is closed. all questions are being referred to their website which indicate tsa will be "carefully m onitoring information" related to terrorist tactics. usually christmas eve is a busy travel day. 98,000 passengers are expected through sfo today. numbers are slightly down from last year. last year, 22,000 people came through the airport. but travelers in general say the experience has been pretty smooth. many travelers we spoke to indicated that they traveled today to try to avoid some of the anticipated lines earlier this week. reporting live in san francisco, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you, jade, for the u pdate. checking in on the travel

at the airport, the oakland international airport, there are no delays. earlier this morning, there were very few travelers. much different scene from yesterday, though, when the lines stretched out the doors. however, an official at oakland international does tell us they are still expecting crowds later in the day. it's a similar situation right now at the airport in san jose and san francisco. about 2,000 people had to be evacuated from charles segal airport in paris because of the roof in one of the terminals. the airport is running low on de-icing few fled so they are asking airlines to cancel half of their flights. thieves in the east bay

hijacked a fed-ex truck filled with gifts. it happened at brookdale and cap while a truck was making the rounds yesterday afternoon. police recovered the stolen struck but at least 60 holiday packages are still missing. now, we spoke with the fed-ex driver yesterday. he says one of the thieves p ushed him, jumped into his truck and drove away. he wasn't physically hurt but he's very upset about this c rime. >> are you worried about everybody else's packages? it's christmas. >> yeah, because -- yes, tomorrow is christmas day. sorry for everybody. >> senior managers were up most of the night at the fed-ex office in san reandro trying to figure out whose christmas p acking as were stolen. >> calosha is investigating the man of a man crushed by a dump truck in snow spa. the accident took place at t he -- in nina. the accident cook place at the

welcome back. valley fair mall is filling up with holiday shoppers right now. following a potentially dangerous situation there, though, involving a man with a rifle. police say the suspect robbed a mall clerk and he is still at large. ktvu's tara moriarty is out there this morning. tara, you just what are they s aying? >> reporter: we, they are saying they don't feel safe at valley mall but then they say they don't feel safe anywhere they shop these days. just to give you an idea of how erratic the behavior of this gunman was. he started inside the mall, police say, targeted a store

ther, then came out why outside, made several threats to people out in this parking lot and i n --ed a in and around this area. and then jumped across the street to the warehouse. targeting people there and go making his getaway a block from there. a lot of people had no idea that a gunman was on the loose because he had hidden a rifle inside of his trench coat. the suspect struck just after 5:00 last night and first hit i nthe club monoco clothing store on the san jose side. for some reason he didn't follow through with the robbery. he then tried to carjack a woman in the nordstrom parking garage but didn't go through it. he then tried to carjack another shopper near the wells fargo bank. finally, he held up a clerk at the men's warehouse shop and made off with crash -- cash. shopsers are -- shoppers are
