after christmas. a major snowstorm working up the east coast causing flights to be canceled including dozens here in the bay area. we are live at sfo where some air travelers are preparing for a long night ahead. >> reporter: maureen there are no weather related canceled flights ott of oakland san jose. here you can see there are several flights preparing to depart. earlier today at least 30 flight its to the east coast out of sfo were canceled today and there could be more tonight. the impact of a strong winter storm stretched across both coasts today as the northeast braced for a blizzard travelers here clutched their boarding passes and checked the flight board. >> we have plans to leave again tomorrow with friends. >> reporter: other travelers weren't so lucky. >> supposed to go from

new england this morning. the same weather system dumped heavy snow yesterday bringing a white christmas to the area. >> enjoyable, hadn. >> reporter: forecasters say the storm is getting stronger. a blizzard warning has been issued for new york. up to 16 inches of snow expected with strong winds. >> latest reports are qualifying this storm as a blizzard. unfortunately our city is directly in the path. >> reporter: new york city airports have canceled many flights. amtrak has canceled several trains. a blizzard warning in effect for rhode island and massachusetts as well. >> my husband called and said be prepared because there will be bad weather. >> reporter: forecasters predicts 15 to 20 inches of snow in parts of the area. maryland, virginia and north carolina declared states of emergency. >> raleigh but the flight was canceled and we had to drive. >> reporter: at least six

inches of snow expected in the midatlantic including the capitol. forecasters say people in the northeast will continue to see heavy snow until tomorrow. in new york, fox news. >> for more of what's happening right now on the east coast we turn to mark. he is in the channel 2 weather center with the winter weather and more on the break-in the rain. >> reporter: that's right. we had the rain showers and of course the major storm in the northeast. right now on the radar you can see the coverage with the radar, not the widespread snow fall for new york city until 6:00, 6:00 p.m. eastern time tomorrow. snow fall will continue to pick up in the short term from philadelphia up towards boston and also portland maine. here across the west you can see not as much coverage but we have a few rain showers showing up across the northeast, around lake tahoe. here say closer look at the bay area radar. nothing to extreme but a few showers in parts of the north

live in san jose, ktvu channel 2news. >> san francisco firefighters today responded to a fire at a marijuana location. it happened just before ten on ocean avenue. details sparse but they responded to reports of smoke and made a quick work to put out the fire. there were no reports of injuries and no word on the caus after christmas crabbing trip almost turned into a disaster. a large wave swept a man and woman off their boat near the entrance to the bay. both were were wearing life jackets and made it to shore where a passerby called the coast guard. neat had serious injury. >> the highway patrol continues enforcement against drunk drivers and reports a dramatic drop in traffic deaths. from 6:00 p.m. friday night to 6:00 a.m. this morning 85 driver was
