very disappointing. >> san francisco 49er head coach mike singletary is out. i'm tara moriarty live at team head quarter. we'll tell you who is set to take his place coming up. dense fog on some bay area bridges. however, others are clear. we'll run it down for you. the rain is not on the menu today but definitely a lot of fog in the morning. what about the rest of the week? also a blizzard on the other side of the country wreaking havoc here in the bay area. how long travelers can expect to be stranded. it's all ahead on the ktvu morning news. well good morning to you. welcome to monday december 27th i'm dave clark. >> and i'm tori campbell. fog out there steve. >> there is indeed. we have partly cloudy skies but the fog is the biggest story.

this morning visibility can be lousy. once we get the fog to one off we will be in the mid 50s and upper 50s for some. it's dry out there as steve has been mentioning. it's a nice drive to the bay bridge. also this morning we're looking at the toll plaza. and also you will see dense fog across the way. let's go back to the desk. >> all right, thank you. the 49ers fired their head coach. mike singletary got the boot after the 49ers lost to the rams yesterday. knocking them out of the chance for play you haves. ktvu tara moriarty joining us live. she's had team head quarters right now. good morning, tara. >> reporter: this is about winning those the words from former 49er head coach of mike singletary. this comes immediately after

his firing. if we take a look at the front cover of the sports section you can see it says over and out. a picture of mike there. he says he's sorry he didn't get a chance to bring it, but that is the nfl. we are hearing reports that 49er president jed york gave singletary the ax on the plane ride home. the team just lost to the rams and officially eliminated to the playoffs. many had picked san francisco to win the nfc west. and to make matters worst singletary could be seen having a heated exchange with troy smith. here's what singletary had to say about it after the game. >> i don't really know about coaching etiquette.

all i know i was try to win a football game. you have to do what is right. you have to go with your gut. >> reporter: singletary said the greatest opportunity of my life was to coach the san francisco 49ers. what made it so special were the players. they were some of the most outstanding men. many said they knew singletary's firing was coming. the hall of fame line backer had never been a coach. and critics harped on him for no createtivity. york said money is no object this time around. as far as singletary's next move he said he will pray with his wife and figure out what is next. the 49ers will figure out hiring a next coach.

some names being tossed around john gurden and jim harbaugh. we are live here tara moriarty. a monster winter storm is continuing to march up the east coast this morning with the weather conditions expected to slow down travel again today. in new york the heavy snowfall has made getting around by car horrible. residents become urged to take extra precautions when they get on the road. the snow combined with very strong winds also stranded bus, train, and airline passengers. thousands of flights were canceled yesterday. we are also hearing of more cancellations today. kraig debro is live at sfo right now. he has the latest on conditions there and how it's effecting our travelers. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dave. a couple of new things for you. half hour ago i told you 20

inbound six outbound. just in 30mys the number is 20 inbound and eight outbound flights canceled. you can see the security line. once again lines not that big. we have been out here in other days near holidays. it has been a lot of better. no snow at sfo. flights with destination to snow means thousands of passengers are canceled. the main ran was the heavy snow in places like new york, boston and philly. this morning american airplane lines has several flights scheduled to depart for jfk. they say all but one will leave on time. united has canceled add reese one of their flights to new york airport -- has canceled at

least one of their flights from new york airport. now the faa says jfk and la guardia will be closed until 2:00 p.m. eastern standard time. that has passengers thinking about alternative plans. >> i'm still kind of scared because i'm not going with my mom. the first time. >> reporter: that's your biggest concern. not the flight delay. >> i guess we will hang around and spend a couple more hours with my daughter. >> reporter: here is what we could be a problem. a lot of the flights from american leave at 7:00. it's a five hour flight plus a three hour time difference. now one of the new york airports la guardia or jfk isn't open until 4:00. if you do the math people could arrive there before the airport is open. let's not forget the 1400 flights at la guardia and jfk.

you have to fit today's flights in. it's uncertain if those people will land. airlines have been working very closely with the airports and they have been calling the passengers. they have done a good job of prewarning passengers to not even come to the airport. on mornings on 2 you will hear from a couple we just spoke to. yesterday they were called at their hotel and told not to come to the airport. they are here today trying to get back to the airport. we'll let you hear more about east coast travel when we get a live report from the la guardia airport. some are calling it hotel la guardia. hundreds of stranded travelers are there right now. it is 6:08. there is a backlash against the antioch city council due to possible police layoff. six officers will be laid off if contract concessions can not be reached by friday. the antioch police union is showing the faces and contact

information for all five city council members and the city manager hoping residents will reach out to them. the city council says they have been forced to impose the layoffs because of the police unions. negotiations between the police union and city will continue this week if the playoffs fake effect. they have a police force of 98,000 officers. chp is saying traffic deaths were down. between 6:00 p.m. trade night and yesterday morning. 85 drivers were arrested here in the bay area with no fatal crash. about the same azoles year. that is down from is last year. sal has a simple solution to avoid a dui arrest.

[ laughter ] i'm the grinch. any way. no, not really. as a matter of fact, i'm here with good news today. if we look at the traffic pictures i want to show you that traffic will be light. although there is fog out there. traffic is going to be light. a lot of schools still have this week off. some people don't have to go back. they usually schedule vacations around this time. we should have a pretty decent week for you to drive unless there are problems. be careful with that fog on the bridge. chp issued a fog advisory for the bay bridge. you're looking at 880 right now near the coliseum. it's not foggy here. the flights in and out are okay. we have been warning you to check with your carrier especially if you are going back east. this is a look at 280 northbound. traffic is move well. let's go to steve.

>> thank you. we do have one system that went by. yesterday. last night. left a little bit of rain. the next system posed to move in here on tuesday. the satellite system shows it's here. rain last 24 hours. keptfield half an inch of rain -- kentfield half an inch of rain. president for san jose everyone is well over 100% of the normal for the year. san rafael was the opposite. san jose was behind. not this year. santa ho is a is 145% normal. san francisco 10.3. they should have 7.5. san jose is almost 86. right now they are the only ones behind. you have to say what is going on? last year was the opposite.

snow up in the mountains have given away to clear skies and temperatures in the 20s. there are a couple spots reporting rain. that is between eureka and crescent city. there is a leading edge of that system that will be here tomorrow. right now all 40s. 42 palo alto. one system moves out. we get the break today after the fog. next system looking a little bit more impressive. we could see 1-2 inches out of that system. this morning 40s and fog. we will have a mix of sun and clouds with that sunburning off. by noon 50s. low to mid and end up with mostly sunny skies. mid 50s to a few upper 50s. hayward 55. san jose at 55. same for santa cruz 56 degrees. we bring in clouds in the morning. rain in the afternoon.

hundreds of flights are canceled again today because of the blizzard conditions in the northeast. patricia woo is live. >> reporter: 250 passengers were stranded here overnight. it has already been a long night for them. all three major airports remain closed. they are expected to open later this afternoon. that won't be the end of travel headaches. empty airports. >> there is nobody here. >> a major northeast storm that created blizzard conditions along parts of the east coast has grounded hundreds of flights. in new york where 15-20 inches of snow and wind gusts up to 55

miles an hour are expected, all air traffic at three major airports was halted. it could be days before the backlog clears and travelers can fly home. >> when you are ready to go home you are ready to go home. but there is nothing you do about it. >> reporter: from virginia to new england it's the same song. amtrak was forced to stop some of its service on sunday. and those snowplows and salt trucks have been put to work to help make conditions a little safer. the message from most east coast officials is similar temperature stay put until the bad weather moves out. >> i understand a lot of families need to get home after a weekend away. please don't get on the roads unless you have to.

>> reporter: good advice. if you have a flight into or and out make sure you call your airline before heading out to the airport. reporting live. >> i'm curious what the weather is like there now. will it warm up and skies clear? >> reporter: well, you know the snow has stopped probably an hour ago. it is still very windy. that's probably one of the main reasons why the airport is still closed. you still have a lot of gusty winds blowing the snow around. i actually heard it is supposed to warm up by wednesday. so got to hang in there. right tori? >> that is right. i will tell you it will be 60 degrees in the bay area. on our channel 2 website you can check on flight delays. go to ktvu.com and click on the holiday travel tab. time now 6:18. no word on a court date for

ignacio delfunta. he was arrested saying the council man was speeding and making unsafe lane changes on 580 year fruitvale. he was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor driving under the influence. the chp says he did take a blood test. the fck is planning on approving new rules to protect cell phone users from being hit with unexpected charges that could add up to thousands of dollars. one in six cell phone users has been hit with bill shock. two-thirds of those that complain to the fcc has been hit with extra charges of $100 or more. and 20% had more than $1,000 in extra charge. the new rules would require cell phone companies to warn customers when they are about to incur extra charges if >> that would be nice to be warned. >> yeah. sal is warning us about any problems on the roads.

it has been kind of quiet. >> it is quiet dave and tori. this week has -- well it usually is a quiet week traditionally. let's go outside. i want to show you live pictures. 680 is good. heading toward the south bay we are not expecting a big crowd. 6820 look -- 680 looks good all the way to 101. certainly there are people out there. a lot of people do have to go to work. schools are out and some people are taking their time off this week. when you get to the toll plaza westbound the traffic looks good. there is a wind advisory on the -- i'm sorry i keep saying wind. it's a fog advisory. fog for the bay bridge. at 6:20 let's go to steve. all right, sal, we do have a lot of fog out there. some of it quite thick. san jose state you can't see

past the cam are lens. temperatures in the 40s. low 40s for many. we had yesterday's system go by. left a tenth of an inch to three quarters of an inch. we're between. 41 palo alto. san jose at 45. there is a little bit of rain on the north coast. we are waiting for that next system on tuesday. tuesday morning maybe for the north bay and everybody by tuesday afternoon. it looks like a decent system. today's forecast does call for thick fog in the morning. this evening mostly fair with highs in the 50s. a lot of mid 50s to upper 50s. let's go warmer toward the south bay. mostly sunny today. rain moves in. one to two inches of rain. this could be brief, heavy at times. wednesday colder air comes in here along with showers and a break thursday we find okay weather. fog friday morning and clouds in the afternoon. it looks like rain friday

good morning. right now traffic is moving along pretty well. there is a dense fog advisory for some of them. the richmond bridge is foggy too. there is no advisory there. fog on the golden gate. no fog on the san mateo. 6:24. rhythm and blues singer tina marie has died. she died in her sleep christmas night. she made musical history in 1979 by becoming the first white singer to be signed by mo town records. she was nominated for several grammy awards and had a long musical award. she had tour dates scheduled for next year. an official cause of death has not yet been determined. 6:25. the fcc has approved the first ever regulations for the internet. already republicans in congress vow they will repeal them.

ktvu alison burns reports the republicans are accusing the fcc and the obama administration of a power grab that will destroy the internet as we know it. >> the fcc goal sounds noble to protect consumer rights to access anything online. >> to go where they want, say what they want, expert with ideas. >> reporter: to protect those rights they ban internet service providers from blocking or limiting their access to their competitors websites and services. the rules are born out of fierce that they will try to pick winners and losers online to maximize their own profits. >> what we are trying to head off are changes that would close the internet, stifle the incredible innovation and investment we have seen. >> reporter: but republicans are not buying it. they say nothing is broken that needs fixing. >> the internet is an

invaluable resource. it should be left alone. >> reporter: and republican on the fccc is issuing this warning about the potential impact of new government intervention. >> less investments. less innovation. increased business cost. increased prices for consumers. >> reporter: at the same time the rules should have gone further. providers have the green light to charge you mother depending on how you use the internet. for example, if you are down load a lot of movies on netflix, you might pay more to your internet provider than someone who browses new sites and sends e-mails. how it will play out is unclear. the new rules is facing challenges. >> 6:27. it will likely be a good new year for retailers. what early numbers predict about this years holiday shopping season. he lost to the st. louis

clark. >> and i'm tori campbell. pam cook has the day off. it is now 6:30. with one game left in the season the 49ers have fired their coach. mike singletary got the boot after the niners lost to st. louis yesterday knocking the team out of a chance at the playoffs for the seventh straight year. tara moriarty is live at the team head quarters with some of the details. good morning tara. >> good morning. it all comes down to winning. mike singletary said he couldn't make it happen yesterday. he was fired after yesterday's loss. here is the front page of the san francisco chronicle sports section. it says over and out with the picture of the catch standing there. now we are told we are hearing reports that 49er president jed gave him the news on the way home. they can understand why singletary was fired so quickly. from a public relations standpoint it might have been

difficult for the coach to field questions for the next week. if you watched yesterday's game you know the niners just lost to the rams and were officially eliminated to the playoffs. many picked san francisco to win the nfc west. he could see singletary having a heated exchange with troy smith on the sideline. here's what he had to say about it. >> on offense we were a little bit flat. you know, just tough. it was just tough. >> reporter: after his firing, singletary did issue a statement saying one of the greatest experiences of my life was having the opportunity to coach the san francisco 49ers. what made it so special were the players. they were some of the outstanding men. many say they knew singletary firing was coming. he won only 18 times in 40

games. the hall of fame linebacker had never been a coach. critics harped on him for lacking createtivity. singletary still has two years and $5 million left on his contract. york said money is no object this next time around. meanwhile, the 49ers will work on hiring a general manager and there is a press conference set here for noon today. we are expecting them to name defensive line coach jim tomsula as interim coach. now as far as the replacement for zip l tear, there have been -- for singletary there have been a couple of names tossed around. one of them former raiders coach and john gruden and stanford head coach harbaugh. it will be interesting to see what comes around. we're live here in santa clara

tara moriarty. a monster winter storm still causing major shakes on the east coast with the blizzard slowing travel plans again necessary morning. in new york the heavy snow makes driving really tough. presidents are being urged to be extra careful. the snow has stranded bus, train, and planes with hundreds of flights being canceled. the snow back east is having a ripple effect. travel all over the country. including in the bay area. at sfo destination is everything. you are seeing the flights either delayed or canceled this morning. passengers bumped last night were forced to rebook with hopes of getting a flight out some time today. >> it would have been a bigger glitch if we hadn't been able to get a flight. and things would have become complicated. it turned out okay.

>> still not clear when traffic will get back to normal as several airports on the east coast are closed. passengers should be advised to give yourself extra time especially if your plans include flying everywhere in the northeast. on our channel 2 website ktvu.com you can check on flight delays and see the latest travel conditions just go to ktvu.com click on the holiday travel tab. it is 6:34 the third victim from last weeks south san francisco drive by shooting has been identified. 20-year-old hector flores was shot along with 18-year-old cortez and avalos. cortez and avalos was pronounced dead at the scene. three others were hurt in the shooting at eighth lane and lyndon avenue. witnesses told police they saw three men driving away from the scene. investigators believe the

shooting is tied to an escalading war between two violent street gangs. a former dog walker accused of stealing his clients jewelry is scheduled in court today. nicholas was given keys to various homes. he is accused of stealing jewelry worth more than $5500 on different occasions. the da's office says he gave the jewelry to his girlfriend to pawn off. he's in jail now on $50,000 bail. crime stoppers shows that program lead to hundreds of arrests for violent crimes. crime stoppers is credited with solving 79 cases. crime stoppers originated in the early '90s. but since then crime stoppers rewards have been offered in

hundreds of violent crimes. 6:36. a man and a woman are safe this morning after their boat flipped over near bodega bay. the two were crab fishing yesterday when the large wave capsized their boat. both were wearing life jackets and able to make it to shore on their own. they were not seriously hurt. a week from today one of san francisco's cable car lines will be taken out of service to have millions of dollars in maintenance work done. the california line will get $16 million in upgrades. the crews plan to replace electrical, mechanical and sewer systems. we can tell you the bus service will be substituted for this cable car between the financial district to china town and then on to knob hill where it should be finished by next july. >> all right.

it's 6:37. let's check in with sal who is working this morning though quite a few people are not. >> that is right. some schools are out. it has been a nice commute if you are trying to get to work. you want to check outs the pictures. they are not too bad. this is san jose commute northbound 280 looking very nice coming up into the valley if you are driving on 85 and 101. also this morning we're looking at the san mateo bridge. no fog there. some of the other bay area bridges are pretty foggy. not this one. traffic looks good heading across to the high-rise. this mornings drive on the westbound bay bridge from there is a fog advisory for that span. at 6:38 here is steve. all right, sal speaking of the fog we were just in san rafael. it's foggy for many locations. it steems be thickening up there. fog is a big story this morning. patchy thick fog and mostly

sunny. rain comes back tomorrow turning colder. we'll have shower activity wednesday morning. then the colder air arrives. cold and breezy into thursday and friday morning. friday night looking like rain. at least right now. that could change. that's what our forecast models are showing. we have one system that is developing right off the eureka area. it will take its time getting here. it is produce some rain up there. for the last 28 hours gilroy three quarters of an inch. livermore .29. and concord picked up .26. everyone is doing well. rainfall wise this year expect san jose. they are the only ones that are not 100% or higher of normal. they are only 86%. they have 3.95. that is downtown san jose airport. 4.58 is normal. san francisco 138% normal. last year was all the south bay with the north bay.

this year it's the opposite. today mostly clear. it's cold out there. low 40s. our system right there. it will dig. it's still cop developing -- it's still developing. santa rosa and napa one system moves out. there is a lot of cold air bottles up there in the gulf of alaska. that is poised to make an appearance here. there will high clouds coming in this afternoon and evening. you can see the clouds making it into the north bay. tomorrow morning light rain makes it. heavier rain will be come into the afternoon hour. 5:00 p.m.. the drive in tomorrow or wherever you are going may be foggy. the one home might be rather wet. that is snow and a lot more snow up in the mountains. this looks like a fast moving system and more compact. today we have the thick fog in

good morning to you. welcome back. here's a quick look at some of the top stories. authorities in oakland arrested a man a couple hours ago. he lead them on a high speed overnight chase. now the pursuit started when the police tried to pull over the suspect that was driving i ratically. the chase ended almost an hour later when the car broke down on 11th and brush street. and the chp is reporting a drop in traffic fatalities over the holiday weekend. there were only three traffic deaths all over the state. that is down from 12 last year. no deadly crashes were reported here in the bay area. this year's holiday shopping season is shaping up to the best in three years. ktvu claudine wong is in emeryville now. it is a little early for

shoppers. >> reporter: it is a little early. we have seen employees coming in getting ready for all the shopper. we are at bay street in emeryville and believe it or not there are couple of stores opening in the next 15 minutes or so. they hope everyone that can get on the list come in here. people with gift cards might come in here and see that one extra thing they can do. thing were busy. the national retail federation is predicting sales will jump 3.3% from last year. a good thing considering we call it a sales from the last couple of years. it's predicted sales will reach $55 billion. we saw several using the gift cards. >> i'm returning guitar hero. i didn't like it as much as the first one. >> it's looking good.

we have gift card shoppers coming in. we still get some of the christmas shopping in. >> reporter: so most people i talked to just wonder on how busy the malls and the stores are going to be because the returns can often take awhile. again we're back out here at bay street. we expect the stores to be opening. we're taking a look at old navy. we haven't seen the rush of people. certainly some people had to go back to work and maybe couldn't squeeze in that last bit of shopping. we will monitor the crowds here. live in emeryville claudine wong. 6:47. the bay area highest paid public employee will be paid even more. nancy farva is the chief executive officer of washington hospital. she earned almost $614,000 this year. now she has been improved to a 3% raise to $632,000.

she will also get $245,000 in bonuses. the second highest paid local public employee is san francisco deputy policy chief charles keelhane that made $516,000 this year. the california regents are waiting to see if the state will as promised restore $354 million it stripped from the uc budget. they do not want to raise student fees anymore than the recently approved 8% hike. they will try to run the place more effectually. 6:48. playboy magazine owner is getting married. he had given an engagement ring to his 24-year-old girlfriend crystal harris. the two have been dating for two years. hefner says this has been his happiest christmas weekend in

memory. veterinarians will decide today whether to euthanize an injured sea lion. silent night was taken to the marine center early last month. someone shot him in the head and his right eye was destroyed by a bullet. his left eye may also have been damaged. if silent night is completely blind he may be put down. one of them was left for dead. started when the dogs kevin and clint escaped from their home. kevin was found two days later from the side of the road badly beat enand shot in the head with a pellet gun. there is a $12,000 reward being offered for information leading to whoever injured the dog kevin. >> that is good news about the dogs. hopefully sal has good news about the commute. if everyone is behaving around

the toll plaza? >> i'm glad you asked me that. >> of course you are. >> yes, i am. i can give you good news. the traffic is doing very well around the bay area. we haven't had that typical slow traffic we see at this time. if this were a normal commute day we would be seeing slow downs. it is nice and quiet out there. a lot of schools have time off. employees take their time off this time of year. kind of stretch it out between christmas and new year. that's exactly what is going on. let's move along and take a look at the bay bridge. we haven't seen a back up there going on two weeks. the traffic continues to move alone realtive -- move along realtively well. now let's go to steve. thank you. we do have a little bit of a break today. in advance of the next system which will be your tuesday. we are dealing with fog this morning. some of it is very, very thick. be careful. quarter mile or less visibility
