the strongest part won't be in until tonight. now here is sal. steve right now traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving on interstate 80 here in berkeley. it looks pretty good as you drive toward the bay bridge. san francisco northbound 101 approaching downtown also the speed limit. let's go back to the desk. thank you very much. oakland police are hoping surveillance video will help them identify and catch the gunman that robbed a busy walgreens store. it happened around 8:00 not far from lake merit. kraig debro is live in oakland. he has the details. >> reporter: good morning, dave. no reported injuries during last nights armed robberies. there is signs like this all throughout the outside of the store and a couple inside telling video recording is in progress. people are hoping witnessing and surveillance will help them. a masked gunman entered the

walgreens around # last night. the store is located just a few hundred feet from lake merit. the gunman accosted the cashier. the beginman ran out of the store. it's not known that the thief left with any money. police are look at store surveillance tape right now. now i'm going to call police. i've already called them. i was going to call them last hour. i have not been able to get ahold of anybody at robbery homicide to see if they have gotten anybody off of that video tape. this store is opening in about an hour from now. reporting live in oakland kraig debro ktvu channel 2 news. san francisco police are investigating the shooting of a teenage bay in the fillmore

district. officers responded to the corner of fillmore street around 10:15 last anything. reportedly that boy had been arguing with four or five other teenage boys. oakland police have a warning for craig list users. police say the ads usually offer deals on expensive cars. the robbers set up a meeting place in east or west oakland where they are robbed. plisses he was robbed of nows of dollars and severe beaten. all three of new york's major airports are up and running again. they were shut down because of that huge snowstorm. thousands of stranded travelers hope today is the day they will get on a plane and get where

they are going. all because of the east coast blizzard. it caused a snowball effect even for passengers on flights not bound for new york or boston. >> they were going to be delayed two hours and there is no snow in dallas. >> airport officials say it may take three days before everything is back to normal. until then passengers are strongly advised call ahead before any awaiting flights. and from the carolinas to maine it's a mess. we don't know how many people are out there trying to start to dig out after that holiday blizzard. and the blizzard forced the cancellation of 7,000 flights nation-wide. the storm has moved on but it left behind 20 inches of snow in new york. 29 inches in parts of northern,new jersey. we will bring you a live report from one of the hard hilt areas

come -- hard hit areas coming up. another round of storms is moving into the bay area and ktvu jade hernandez is watching preparations in mill valley where they are starting to get concerned about mud slides there. >> good morning. the preparation for rain means more than preparing for rain. mud slide preparations have already begun here in mill valley. ktvu was in roanoke park where drivers experienced a backup. cal tran is working on a two- year renovation where the freeway is being widened but pothole issues have slowed down progress. cal tran shifted to working the inside lane of highway 101 trying to beat the expected rain. ktvu followed the fire captain as he participated precipitation and what it would do to this area.

the city's public works department also tried to identify problem spots when they cleaned up water log areas. the issue was fine. the parks and recreation maintenance chief spotting areas that could find is one thing but stopping them is another. >> there is one spot right there. on the hillside you might start to see a split or a bigger spot up higher. >> a lot of the area is undeveloped and like you see right here on monta vista we will get slides. >> reporter: they used a bulldozer to remove a slide on the road. crews were told will be on stand by until the rain expected to end later this week. reporting live in mill valley jade hernandez.

rather light. from mendocino county it doesn't look like too much in marin yet. a little wider everything. everything else is cloudy skies. so far temperatures in the 40s and 50s. there has been light snow up in the sierra nevada. the key though is this system is still well offshore but it's going to produce moderate to heavy rain as it comes in tonight. we have a flash flood watch out for the north bay and a wind advisory. almost all the advisories start around 4:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. and also very cold air will come in behind that. we are seeing light rain mainly in the north by bay. if you have to take any kind of outside activity or take care of anything in the morning it's best because tonight i would get home if i can to leave work early. there will be very intense rain rates. north bay and santa cruz

welcome back. time now 6:11. five teenagers have been found dead in a motel room from carbon monoxide poisoning. they rented a hotel room to celebrate a birthday. authorities believe the toxic carbon monoxide fumes from the garage seeped into their hotel room and killed them. we are hearing the u.s. embassy in london was one of the targets for men in britain. police arrested 12 men in bathe tape on counterterrorism raids to protect the public. u.s. state department is confirming the american embassy was on the list of targets along with the london stock exchange. time now 6:12. as back to back suicide

bombings rock a major iraqi city iraqs prime minister is making head lines of his own. let's go to alison burns who is live with the very latest. good morning alison. >> reporter: good morning to you, claudine. it's a sign of the security challenges that remain. these two suicide attacks killed 19 people and wounded 45 in the western iraqi city of ramadi. this violence comes as iraq prime minister makes some of his most definitive comments yet about the presence of u.s. forces. he wants all u.s. troops out of iraq by the end of next year. let's take a look here at what nouri al maliki said. this is not subject to alteration. it's sealed. the new government forces are

capable of confronting any remaining threats to iraq's security. there are 50,000 u.s. troops in iraq now and the obama administration says they are on track to leave by the end of next year. the u.s. embassy will house a security office after that reportedly comprised of 80-90 military personnel. reporting live from washington, d.c. alison burns. time now 6:14. the number of americans who don't have health insurance is growing. according to a new report from the kizer foundation more than 50 million americans lack insurance. that is because of the high unemployment rate. many people who lose their jobs and employers sponsored health insurance just can't afford to purchase private insurance. more than half of unemployed people have no health coverage. president obama is expected to name his top economic advisor when he comes back from

his hawaiian vacation next week. the replacement for the outgoing economic director will help guide almost every economic decision the obama administration will make. also this morning the library of congress announced the 25 movies selected for the national film registry this year. they include the empire strikes back, saturday night fever, the exorcist, and all the president east men. he came way out of political left field before and he is doing it again. former u.s. senate nominee alvin greene is once again running for office in south carolina. greene filed papers to run for an open seat in the south carolina state legislature. he made national news earlier this year with very little campaigning he won the democratic nomination to challenge jim demint.

greene suggested that one way to create new jobs would be to hire people to build action figures of him. showing what he called poor security in san francisco international airport is going public. the pilot has been identified by a sacramento fell vision station as chris lou of colfax. he is going public because he wants to change major flaws in security. officialsed a that most -- officials add that most of the security is not available to the -- is not visie to the public opinion the ss bay will be moved from suisun bay. it will go into dry dock and be cleaned before it's sent to virginia to be dismantled. two other ships will follow

u.s. markets show home prices dropped 1.3% in october. analysts had expected a very small decrease or slight increase. all 20 cities reported monthly price declines. the index remains 30% below. and home prices are expected to continue polling across the town by. ? an harrow will getth consumer confidence report. analyst expect it to jump. that would put it near 56 points. a ride of 90 is a sign of a healthy economy. today at & t will announce it's opening up a wi-fi hot zone. at & t operated a network of hot spots and hotels and airports and other indoor locations for years. but this will be the first public outdoor space where wi-

it will calculate how much snowfall will run off. it's already estimated they will deliver half of the requested attainer 2011. a little league baseball team is asking for help now to catch the vandals that just keep trashing their ball field. the field is covered with graffiti and garbage and condoms and needles. they spent most of their saturdays cleaning up and repainting but just days later the field is trashed again. >> we try to provide an environment for our kids to come here and be safe and play and get them away from the street life. away from the gangs that even at the schools. and then we bring them here and this is what they are seeing. >> just a week and a half ago somebody set fire to one of the dugouts. little league is asking people in the community to call police

if they see anything suspicious. jed york said he decided to fire coach mike singletary with one game left so they could focus on the season. that has been the talk of the town from sports talk shows, sports bars, and sports stores. >> he couldn't get the team going at all. >> many experts had picked the team to win the nfc west even with a poor record this year the 49ers still had a chance to make the playoffs. that was up until sunday's loss with st. louis. some fans we talked to thought they would give singletary more time and others said it was time for him to go. >> great managers let their players arise to their capacity. he wasn't able to do that. >> nothing was working. no matter what coordinator you bring in. >> i think they should have wait the one more year. and see how he would do next year.

>> the 49ers haven't had a winning record since their last trip to the post season back in 2002. jed york said he will hire a new general manager in the off season and that general manager will select the next head coach. our 49ers coverage continues on ktvu.com. you can also take our survey to let us know whether you think mike singletary should have been fired. all right. 6:25. in walnut creek friends and neighbors are mourning the tragic death of an elderly man that was a world war ii veteran. he died in a house fire that broke out saturday afternoon. firefighters say there was so much smoke when they arrived they had to cut a hole in the roof to let some of it out. it was already too late to save 85-year-old keith brooks that may have died from smoke inhalation. he was part of the invasion force headed to japan when the

first atomic bomb was dropped. >> we all know the horrors of nuclear war now. >> loved by all the neighbors. several of us had him over to dinner on a regular basis. we used to see him out walking almost every day. >> mr. brooks wife died six years ago. he leaves behind two adult sons. the investigation into the cause of the fire that continues. one firefighter says it's possible it was started by a space heater. time now is 6:27. a bold armed robbery. what police are hoping leads them to an arrest. an early morning apartment fire in san francisco. just hours ago what arson investigators say someone set on fire forcing an evacuation. and early this morning stocks pointed to a higher opening on wall street.

right now at an early morning fire. ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty has been talking with firefighters and joins us with the very latest. >> reporter: investigators have been collecting evidence all day long. taking pictures and investigating witnesses. if you take a look at the entrance of the building you can see where it's burned out that's where officials say someone purposely lit a christmas tree. when the call came in witnesses say there were small children trapped inside the building. one of the victims said someone wedged a burning tree underneath her door. >> we woke up and heard screaming and babies crying and we look out the window and the house is on fire. it was flamed up. coming out of the door. blazing through the home. we had some guy had to drop

babies out the window. fire department broke the gate off the door. she had to break her window to get her out of the house. it was crazy. >> reporter: mike thompson says the building has many bars on the window. that concerned crews. they wanted to make sure everyone got out fast. >> there were multiple families that live in here. this one entrance serves four different departments. so we know if we have a fire in the entry we could have four people trapped inside. we ended up laddering the backside of the building in case we had to pull someone off of window seals. >> reporter: in so as far as who would want to trap some people inside a burning building one woman that told us she had just gotten out of a bad relationship. investigators will be interviewing that person and exploring other leads. right now certain safe. there is no damage to the

structure of this building. you can see where crews had to rip off the gate here to the entrance of the building. the christmas tree is actually just a stick and it's sitting out in the sidewalk right now. now for part of the investigation they will be doing most of the paper work back at the office. the scene is wrapped here for arson investigators. we're live here in san francisco i'm tara moriarty. time now 6:32 oakland police are hoping surveillance video will help them catch a gunman that helped them rob a walgreens store. police say this masked man held a gun to the cashier and demanded money. a witness saw what was going on and ran out and called police. the gunman did escape but surveillance video may give them some clue as to who this is. kraig debro is gathering more

information about this story right now. police in antioch say they now have a suspect in the killing of a 24-year-old pittsburgh man police say they are looking for this man. 18-year-old michael pulliambank. he goes by the name michael banks. banks shot the 24-year-old pittsburgh man in the head inside a 1990s green ford escort and dumped the body on rock spring way in antioch back on december 20th. a new report says violent crime is down in richmond. richmond police tell the times new programs are gradually reducing crimes. the project is at all staffing. they are also working to closely track employees. police say they are also enforcing a new daytime curfew

the emergency pothole repairs. after calls started coming in about a big crater damaging car. but as soon as that was fixed others needed attention. what was supposed to take a couple of hours turned into a marathon paving session. potholes fill with crack and pavement. sal we know about the potholes and you know all about the toll plaza too. >> yeah. the traffic has been very well. the teleplays specially temperature it's not at all that bad. if you are driving on interstate 880 in oakland or interstate 580 in oakland getting to the toll plaza shouldn't be a bad deal. i think we will start to see more people as we get closer to the new year and then it will be quiet again. somebody 101 that traffic looks

welcome back. here's a quick look at some of the stories we are following for you. arson investigators are looking for clues that started an early morning fire just hours ago at an apartment building. someone set a christmas tree on fire outside the entry gate to several departments trapping residents inside for awhile. luckily everyone was able to escape safely. eight homeless people were killed in a fire. victims were burns wood in a barrel trying to stay warm in the freezing temperatures there. thousands of stranded airline passenger hope they will be able to get on a flight and get back home today. it's expected to take about three days for air travel to get back to normal as airlines rebook passengers from nearly 7,000 canceled flights. east coast residents are

dealing with piles of snow. patricia is live from one of the hardest hits areas. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: hi there claudine. a lot of snow. pictures worth a thousand words. check out that car still half buried. unfortunately digging out is not the only problem here. mounds and mounds of snow stuck vehicles and thousands and thousands of travelers stranded. though forecasters say the worst of a powerful winter storm is over, millions of east corsetries kepts and visitors -- east coast residents and visitors still has a lot eddying out of. stirred up wind gusts up to 80 miles an hour in massachusetts and left tens of thousands of people without power in connecticut. air travel was especially hard

hit. >> i was supposed to go out of here around 11:00. and now it's still thursday. >> reporter: weather alone grounded 4,000 flights. slowly began to resume business monday evening. still with all the backlog some airline passengers are being told it could be four days before they could fly. train passengers dealing with a similar situation. amtrak has resumed some of its service but travelers can expect crowded stations and plenty of delays. in new york subway riders are hoping for an easier commute. passenger ross capture these pictures monday after snow and ice left hundreds stranded. >> no heat no nothing. >> reporter: still some officials say it could have been much worse. and here in new jersey the state offices are closed today as residents are being urged to stay off the roads if possible. i spoke to a driver that said

run through thursday night. police in sacramento are looking far person that threw fire bomb at a woman of 102- year-old woman. >> why they picked on this house, i don't know. >> that is georgia trainham that was asleep while it happened. neighbors ran across the street to put the fire out with a garden hose. investigators expect it was a random attack and say tranham has lived peacefully in that home for 35 years. here is a holiday story. a central valley man donated hundreds of toys that he won by playing arcade games. jack hudson and his wife go to the santa cruz beach five times a year. and in each visit they spend a thousand dollars in tokens for arcade games. this year they donated more than 1300 toys to various

charities. rock star elton john says he and his partners are overwhelmed because they are now fathers. they adopted a baby boy on christmas day. elton john and his partner canadian film maker david furnace tried to adopt a ukrainian baby last year but were prevented by the government. 25 cents more per zone. raises a fare from san francisco to san jose from $7.75 to $8.50. cal train will also eliminate two weekday trains that run in the middle of the day but will add a baby bullet train service on the weekend with trains making seven stops instead of 20 made by commuter trains. all intended to close $2.3

of it. it has been mainly in the north bay. we are getting a break right now in areas that have had some rain. we are starting to see a little bit of a break. we are looking for a strong system. cloudy today and rain comes in tonight. heavy rain is forecasted. flash flood watch starts in the north bay. we have a wind advisory that starts 4:00 knot bay. most of the weather tonight will be tonight. heavy rain windy and colder tomorrow. showers coming in as the temperatures plunge as we get a cold air pass in here. southerly indagations over 50 miles an hour. and along the coast is a rather strong surface low develops right to the north of us. that begins at 4:00 today. not too bad right now. things will start to pick up a little bit later. you can see on live storm tracker we're between as the next system moves in on the north coast. 40s to 50s at san francisco. 44 in concord livermore.

rain develops along with wind tonight. there will be heavy rain. heavy mountain snow. this is a forecast model projection on rain fall. so watch how these start to click off here in the next noon and then on. right there. watch in the north bay. santa rosa and san rafael. projections over three inches of rain in the santa cruz mountains. two plus for san rafael to kent field. san jose three quarters. so if i was to say there is a lot of potential for that system. they have light snow right now. heavy snow and wind come in tonight. so for us today cloudy and then rain moves in later on. the wind picks up. heavy rain will be toght anywhere from 1-3 inches of rain looks likely especially toward the north bay and santa cruz mountains. 50s on your highs today. showers much colder wednesday. another system clips us on

thursday. we will get a break friday. zero consensus for the weekend. one says dry and another says no we will bring more rain in. 6:49. a financial company that received the biggest bailout is taking its next step. aig has lined up $3 billion in credit. it can't use any of that money until it's paid back the $182 billion in federal bailout money but it needed to prove it could raise money on its own before the government would let it start making payments. let's take a live look at the numbers. the dow went up a little bit and now it's back down. only by a few points. certainly people reacting to this standard home index that came out saying that prices fell from the month before in october 1.3%. that's worst than what analysts
