springily all day but now the real rain getting here in the next few hours. we go to the north bay, i want to show you what we have. the yellows representing a heavier rainfall. we have a lot of rain in the north bay this winter. what we have is saturated ground. we showed you concerns for saturated ground. what we have in the north bay is what started as an urban, a watch for flash flooding is now in urban and flood stream flood advisories, for areas in north san rafael, the impact with this will be pooling from rainfall rates that could exceed 3/4 of an inch to half an inch an hour. in the marine head lands, we -- the rain is moderate. there's a bigger hit behind that. the next four hours will be the heaviest rain. the urban advisories stay in effect till midnight tonight.

we're going to talk about which neighbors are going to get the wettest. i'll see you back here in a bit. >> thank you now. from bill we go to sal castaneda who's in marine county where there's a lot of concern of at all that rainfall will have. >> we're standing next to this creek, and a lot of people are concerned that a recent sewage spill could send contamination from the sewage spills next to their homes. they're worried about this rainmaking a lot of areas unsafe. with rain now falling and more due this week some are worried about the already saturated ground and the possibility of rising creeks, over flowing storm drains and flooding. >> i live over here off of lucky drive. >> it's always good to be prepared. i think people get caught off guard because they get very complacent about what they're doing every day. >> in central marine, a break in a sewage main sent more than

a million gallons of raw sewage on to the creeks. now that rain is here, some are worried about more contamination. >> i can smell some of it near where i live. and i'm very concerned. >> marine county health officials say the rain could wash away contamination by by diluting the streams. >> there's concern that the water system will be able to handle so much water in a short amount of time. >> reporter: officials have posted signs to stay away from the water. they say the signs will not go down until it's safe. >> we're not dealing with the infrastructure. and that's usually a sign of a

decaying society when an infrastructure is not maintained. >> reporter: i just got off the phone with john clark the director of the sanitation district or sanitary district. he says there is no reason he feels that this sewage system that they set up temporarily shouldn't be able to handle this week's rain. also we found out there's flooding in marine county off of lucky drive. in the same spot that usually gets flooded. live in marine county, sal castaneda, ktvu channel 2 news. you can see the conditions there, umbrellas are out right now in the east bay as this wet weather system moves through. steady rainfall began with the the last half hour in oakland. as bill mentioned, heavier rainfall is expected within the next half hour. there are also scattered rain showers in san francisco right now. there are a lot of wet roadways but so far there have been no reports of flooding or any other weather related problems. all this rain here in the

bay area means several feet of new snow up in the sierra. in fact, ski resorts there this is turning out to be a record year. ktvu's ken pritchett live in tahoe with how things look now. >> gasia, we spent the better part of our day in the mountains at the higher elevations around noon it started snowing here in lake tahoe, really started -pl cooing down here within the last hour. this is snowplowed from the roadways. of course where it counts, where the snow counts is up on the mountains and there is plenty of it. plenty of that snow at the ski resorts. this is heavenly ski resort where eager skiers and snow boarders lined up for conditions that are -- >> it's perfect, powder. powder. it's perfect ski conditions. >> it's not icy at all. it's just powder everywhere. >> reporter: that's before this latest sierra storm rolled in.

this morning the sun struggled to shine through the approaching clouds. bankston and his family moved in to approach the storm. >> we got in here this morning and got in the car and got up there. >> some of the locals are expecting very little snow. several feet between 4:00 this afternoon and 4:00 tomorrow morning. at the base it was clear, the snow was already coming down. >> it's awesome, it's really stormy up there. it's super low visibility. but you can see just enough to get down the mountain fine. it's putting down plenty of fine powder. >> reporter: they've received 180-inches of snow this year. big numbers but equal a good time for skiers on the slopes. >> it's really fun. i did the first shred down the mountain ever.

on this. >> reporter: and neighbors in east and north oakland where the robbers are telling prospective car buyers to come meet them. a search for cars for sale on craigslist will turn up more than a thousand entries. the majority of them are legit but oakland police say online classified are how one group of robbers is luring in its victims. police say it happened at least six times in the last few months. robbers have taken ads on craigslist. police say the robbers then pose as residents in oakland's diamond district and north oakland neighborhoods. >> they lure victims using craigslist ads, they invite the victims to take a look at cars in a residential area of oakland. >> reporter: the victims are then robbed of their money and

belongings at gunpoint. the most recent robbery happened on sunday afternoon when a man from lodite came to oakland to respond to an ad. >> what we're seeing about these suspects, they are becoming more brazen. >> it's a pretty hot neighborhood now. >> reporter: these residents say they expect news of the scam will come up in their next neighborhood watch meeting. >> i think if we see things, we certainly would take some action. >> reporter: and police say the best way to avoid scams like this is to agree to meet any online sellers in a high traffic area like a b.a.r.t. station or transit center. you should never bring large amounts of cash with you or meet someone at their home. allie rasmus. police are asking for the public's help to find a man

suspected of holding up an armed robbery and carjacking. 28-year-old joseph jenkins is a transient. he's accused of robbing a men's warehouse and carjacking a vehicle. anyone who may have seen jenkins is being asked to call san jose police. amazon.com reports record numbers for it's busiest shopping day of the season. on that day customers bought at a rate of 156 items per second, that's an all time high. 14.7million items for the day. the very latest version of the kindle electronic device was the most popular. and the dow finished at

it's all time low. the dow finished at a 28 month high despite reports. the dow finished up 21 points. the nasdaq was off four points closing at 2,663. state highway officials say they saw dramatic decrease in the number of traffic deaths during the christmas holiday holiday this year compared to last year. they reported four deaths. none of them here in the bay area. the chp also reported 458 dui arrests. there were 1,104 last year. now one reason for the decrease might be that the reporting period this year was two days long, one day shorter than last year. a burning christmas tree at the entrance to a housing complex caused some frightening moments in san francisco this morning: the fire started about 1:30 a.m. at the door of one of the units. firefighters say the fire was small and that someone had put

it out by the time someone arrived. but people that live there say it was frightening just the same. >> it was flamed upcoming through the door. blazing through the whole row. they had to, some guy had to drop babies out the window. the fire department broke the gate off the door. >> reporter: fortunately everyone made it out of the building safely. invest investigators say they suspect arson but have not determined who is responsible. this is not a good time to be flying. the new delays and cancellations tonight at the bay area's three major airports. it's going to be a windy night around here. a wet night as well. in the mountains lots of snow, i'll keep you posted. i'll have the details for how long this deal is going to last.

here that there is rain expected tonight throughout the bay area. our chief meteorologist bill martin says that we're in for a pretty intense couple of hours. he'll be back here with exactly what to expect in the next few minutes. first we go to san francisco international airport where passengers once again are waiting in long lines tonight and once again flights headed back east have been cancelled. late today both jet blue and virgin america cancelled their flights to jfk. the storm has created huge back ups. for some weary travelers at sfo, this has been a tough holiday get away. >> i'm just going to try to hit anything in the eastern seaborg at this time. i will drive, take a train, take a bus whatever it takes. >> we're trying to get home and it's very important. i have to work tomorrow and i have three cats at home. >> i came to the airport twice, i've had four flights cancelled, and i just want to get home, that's the point. >> sfo duty manager told us

about a half an hour ago that several other airlines have cancelled flights to the east coast as well. most of those that are getting out of the ground are seeing one to four hour delays. the east coast snowstorm is causing flight concerns in oakland. oakland says two jet blue flights are being delayed. they were scheduled to leave oakland several hours ago. their destination is jfk airport which is snowed in. maneta says it's waiting to jet blue from jfk and another from boston will arrive on time around 8:00 p.m. both flights were cancelled sunday and yesterday. while the storm has let up in the east coast the big dig out continues as tempers begin to flair as people found themselves, and their commute still snow bound. >> i want to get where i want to go. doesn't allow me to get to work. of course it inconveniences me. >> we have to continue working

ahead. yelling and complaining doesn't help. >> new york mayor michael bloomburg says the biggest challenge is all the vehicles that are stuck in the snow. cars, trucks, even ambulances have to be dug out before the plows move through. but life is getting back to normal, including in new jersey. the owner never made it home last night. >> i slept on the side of the flour beds. we were making hot rolls for the customers still coming in. exuders found it tough to get back to work with limited service, the few trains that did run today were just packed leaving some riders stranded there on the platform. all the mayor airports shut down by yesterday's blizzards had reopened but delays are still rampant across the country as airlines struggled to get their planes bag up in

the air and back on time. and a ski lift accident injured several people including children. a lift carrying hundreds of people suddenly derailed throwing five lifts to the ground. it took rescuers several hours to rescue 200 skiers. in lake tahoe we asked bay area skiers if they are worried about riding a ski lift is -- ski lift? >> yeah, yeah we do. we will just jump. >> it's all for the love, it gets me a great opportunity to spend time with my kids. >> reporter: none of the injuries in today's accident was life threatening. officials say the chair lift is 35 years old and was due to be replaced soon. a 20-year-old man from a

sonoma county town of windsor died over the weekend in an apparent snow boarding accident. the body of cooper plaxico was found in a deep creek on christmas day. he had disappeared in british columbia the previous afternoon when he went off the designated trail in low visibility. investigators aren't sure if he drowned or died from hypothermia. we're expecting a lot of rain. >> a little bit of everything. it's going to pack a punch. it's not going to be super short but it's not going to linger and hang out for a day or so. it's going to be about two to three hours at about 10:00 tonight. that's when the front moves through. the wind will pick up, the rain will pick up and we'll get pretty wet around here. we already are right now up in the north bay. this is one of the waves coming through. this isn't everyone the main hit up here. you see heavy rain and it's

progressing. it has momentum. we put it in motion and i want you to see the movement of this storm as it moves off rapidly toward the east. actually i won't get movement on this. look at napa, vallejo, concord, rodeo, if you are driving around tonight especially in the north bay. north of richmond you are getting wet. we have rain everywhere else, but out there this is the low grade shower. just light showers continuing to linger in the santa clara valley. but this yellow area is going to come through, as it does the yellow area representing stronger rain it will pick up. behind that is another area of yellow, maybe a little bit of red. that's going to come in around 8:30. the computer shows it very clearly. that limits your travel plans. so don't really make big plans to travel out into the valley or up into the mountain. because it'll be windy, it'll be wet and no fun to drive around. drive tomorrow morning. if you are going to the mountains you might want to

caltrain says it hopes to add a train in its hopes to reduce it's million dollars budget gap. the pilot project is set to run for three months with an option to extend it. 2010 was a deadly year for police officers in the united states. a new report shows that after dropping for two years in a row, the number of officers killed in the line of duty skyrocketed this year. >> we really thought we were getting a handle on the situation. better training, more equipment, more officers on the street. better emergency medical care. >> but despite those efforts the national law enforcement officers memorial fund says 165 officers died on the line of duty in 2010. that's a 40% increase from 2009. 59 officers were shot to death, that's a 20% jump from 2009. >> perhaps a sign of a more brazen criminal element prowling on the streets of america.

and this poses great threat to our officers but also to our citizens. >> california ranked in the top five states with 11 officer deaths. that includes a fresno sheriff deputy that was shot and killed while trying to serve a warrant on a suspect. oakland also lost four officers in 2010. the fifth was a pilot who died when his chp plane crashed. officials with the officers memorial fund saying that budget cuts are partly to blame for these fatalities. they say the number of sworn officers have plummeted from 100,000 to fewer than 60,000 today. santa clara county's veteran fire chief is retiring at the end of this month but he doesn't plan to leave right away. according to the san jose

mercury, he plans to stay on as a consultant. that's on top of his yearly state pension. the move gives them time to find a new chief but critics call the deal a classic case of double dipping at a time when local government is facing a fiscal crisis. pop star elton john has become a father. the 64-year-old has adopted a boy from a serrogant mother. david furnace and john have been together for 17 years. you may remember they tried to adopt a ukrainian baby last year but were stopped by government regulation. the couple released a statement saying, they are overwhelmed with happiness at this very

rain can just let lose and you will have torrential rain. maybe five inches at a time and things that you think are fine will just collapse. >> reporter: and tonight that rain is here and a lot more is on the way. as another storm hits the bay area. we are on storm watch tonight. the rain and wind have swept into the south bay and santa cruz mountains during the past couple of hours. a lot of communities are frantically taking preventive

measures. folks are trying to keep hazardous situations outs of control. >> reporter: we're here at the summit at the santa cruz mountains where many drivers are traveling fast on this very wet stretch of highway 17. today a lot of people are trying to race ahead of the storm before it reaches full strength. sharp steep turn make laurel curve one of the most dangerous sections in the santa cruz mountains and everyone more treacherous in the rain. this afternoon a caltrans crew had to make emergency repairs on the cushion concrete divider that protects drivers on the road. lanes were shut down in both directions for about four hours. >> it was in really bad shape. someone hit it last night. >> reporter: how crucial is it that you get this done before the storm hits? >> it's really crucial. laurel curve is a real sharp curve over here, i recommend in wet weather people slow down. >> reporter: there was a crowd also racing against the storm

at the sand pile outside ben lomas disaster center. families filling sandbags to line around their home. >> we fill them up because the rain can just let lose and you'll have torrential rain: things that you think are fine may collapse, let lose maybe come into your house. >> reporter: people were also cutting down large looming trees. this rots redwood crashed down over highway nine but got suspended on an oak and came over the tree. >> the water soaks the ground, losens it up a little bit. and be definitely cautious of fir trees. fir trees are the worse tree around homes because they go right through them. >> reporter: roofing and other repairs went on right up until this evening. as one homeowner put it they won't know if they beat the storms until the storms pass. live in the santa cruz mountains, robert handa, ktvu

channel 2 news. let's take a look now at what's happening in bay area roadways. let's start with a look at emeryville. traffic is crawling in both directions going only about 15 miles per hour. let's take a live look now on what's happening on the golden gate bridge. traffic moving a bill -- moving a bit better than it was a while ago. a bit slower on the southbound side. now to the south bay where this is a view along interstate 280 in san jose. things look pretty good here. you can see the rain isn't doing that much damage to the evening commute in the south bay. let's go now to our chief meteorologist bill martin: you say the heaviest rain is still to come. >> interesting pattern, and there's a lot of tropical moisture, we talked about this last night. it's getting pulled into this system. it's a nice looking weather system. we're going to turn on this radar sweep. this is working the san jose

radar. certainly showing up in the north bay, rainfall totals have come up in this area. rainfall accumulations in the north bay about a half inch. as the next wave moves through between 7:00 and 9:00 at night we're going to see those totals go up another inch, 1- 1/2. and areas of the north bay at 6:00 tonight, what that is is that's in response to these heavy rainfalls we've been talking about. you see heavy rain showing up there. heavy rain south of mark. we go live now, we can go to san francisco. you can see that yellow area. this is what it looks like in realtime. heavy to moderate rain. get used to it because there's more out there. rainfall rates are really going to pick up. there's urban watches in effect. this is a progressive weather

every day. but what happened to a bicyclists is calling for change. >> that's very sad. >> reporter: police say a driver severely injured a bicyclists early christmas morning. >> the vehicle did strike the bicyclists causing the bicyclists to fall off the bike. and the vehicle failed to stop and fled the scene. >> reporter: investigators say the 24-year-old male cyclists had the right of way when he was struck by a silver or gray four door sedan that was making a left turn on to barton. the unidentified cyclists is at an francisco general hospital with life threatening injuries. the crash is highlighting concerns about this stop sign free stretch of bartlet street. >> drivers have bumped into me with their car. >> i don't cross the street here, i go down there to mission street if i have to cross the street because i'm

you see rainfall rates in this yellow and orange area, maybe a half inch, .25 an hour. we could see rain totals exceed an inch an hour for the heaviest locations. it will be short lived. it should not last a long time: it's going to back up a little bit and i'm going to put it in motion. you can watch the progress the progression. the yellows are lingering in the east bay but it's going to slide south. and end up in the santa cruz mountains in the big surr area. here's how it goes, tomorrow morning lingering sprinkles, the story is tonight. the story, the weather story is between right now, 10:00, 11:00 tonight so we'll be here talking about it and we'll keep an eye on it for you. this system is moving as long as it continues to move we'll be in really good shape. if it were to stop and start

dumping rain, it'll stop. it'll be raining up until the mountains. here we are tonight at 8:00 then, now you really can see the front can't you. the arching there. that's where the computer model thinks it will be and when it will be there. that's the heaviest rain. that's the heaviest wind. the wind advisory will be area. it's straight up and down, n orth, south. then it'll go to the back edge. the 10:00 hour will be the most intense as the real energy gets here and then it goes. when it gets up in the mountain, you know ice skaters when they put their arms up they slow down. this storm gets up in the upper atmosphere and it's like its arms go up. it slows down. what's going to happen is its going to linger. it will be in effect through tonight and into tomorrow

customs officials at l.a.x. grew curious last week at the sight of easter egg candies two days before christmas. in a closer inspection they found cocaine inside the eggs. police arrested -- he was returning from a trip to columbia and he claimed the candy was for the children. it has a street value of $100,000. and a group of people spent

the day looking upward. they paobg part of a mono -- they took part in a monumental part of counting birds in the region. this was the golden gate audiobahn today. the group started shortly after dawn using scopes and binoculars to search for all types of bird. last year they recorded 169 separate species and a total of 49 individual birds. >> the california quail have already disappeared from san francisco. we're starting to get western bluebirds nexting that we never had before because some of the habitat restoration. like spotted toies. all of the information gathered today will be entered into a data base, so researchers can spot long term trends when it comes to bird populations.
