good afternoon. we'll explain why healthy trees are still causing damage after last night's storm. mud slides, toppled trees and downed gas lines. i'll tell you where most of the damage from last night's storm happened coming up. the motive behind a home invasion robbery in san jose that wounds one officer one and a suspect. that's all next.

good afternoon. topping our news at this hour we do have new information about the death of a grandmother killed by a falling tree during last night's storm. the coroner's office has identified the victim as a 70- year-old grandmother. authorities say he tree came crashing down on the tent. she was sharing that tent with a seven-year-old granddaughter. this shows what's left of the tent they were in. she was killed instantly. her seven-year-old granddaughter was uninjured, but was trapped and had to be rescued. we do have a reporter headed there and will have more on this story tonight at five and

six. now to the other aftermath of the wet winter storm which blew its way through the bay area. we do have coverage for you this morning. wind and mud are cause caking big problems on the coast, but we begin with jade hernandez checking out all the storm damage around the bay area. good afternoon, jade. >>reporter: good afternoon. the skies may be clear, but there are still trouble spots here in the bay area. we just got off the phone with a spokesman, and heavy winds are still taking trees down and causing residents problems.. >> it can be dangerous. it takes a little longer. >>reporter: the supervisor answered his phone around to 30

this morning and came out to this area fully expecting to spend the rest of the morning in the rain. that type of work continues in various parts of the bay area. our camera traveled south to saratoga where on highway 9 near redwood gulch there was a power line toppled. a few hours later they reopened the road. this storm also brought torrential rain, leaving behind flooding. once the rain stopped, water subsided near richland parkway. there were gusts up to 60 miles per hour. most of the bay area customers which lost power have had it restored. here's a breakdown for you. 460 customers in the north bay

are without power still, and in east bay 540. the south bay, two hung 50. and on the peninsula, throw hundred. last but not least, only 10 san francisco customers are still without electricity this afternoon. crews will continue to work throughout the day. now, continuing our team coverage, you're south of assisty ca. what's going on there? >> here it's extremely windy. the waves have been really turning out there. if you take a look over my shoulder you can see all of the white caps and actually the weather has calmed down since the storm rolled through last night. rain and strong winds battered the pier all morning. >> sucks the heat right out of you. >> it does, trust me. i've got layers and i'm still cold. >>reporter: they wanted to fish for crab. >> with this condition and this weather it was just ridiculous. we got winds at almost 30 miles

per hour, and trying to get your fishing line out there is going to be hectic. >>reporter: a few blocks away amy walks her dog. >> you can definitely see how precarious it is. >>reporter: she lives across the street from the crumbling cliff. >> a lot of people have moved out, for sure. you see lots of u-hauls. >>reporter: a lot of people worried about slippag . >> i think so, yeah. >>reporter: they've been trying to save the apartments in danger from erosion. in montana high winds snapping a gas line, the yellow pipe yo see there, that feeds into two homes. at 9:30 this morning they were excavating to cap off the line and no evacuations were necessary. just north of there crews shut

down a stretch of highway 101 overnight while they bull dozed debris triggered by a mudslide and reopened it at 5:30 this morning. the mudslide was actually a lot closer to pacifica than reported earlier. >> it looks rough out there. thanks for that report, and try to stay warm. >> is it over? possibly more rain in the forecast? our meteorologist has been a busy man. >> the wind is still there, but it depends. for some areas they've clouded up, and we get brief downpours.

the rain was impressive. the wind continues to be a big story. we're not done with the showers, but done with the raining per se. we'll have details in a few minutes. a search for a missing woman who disappeared while snowboarding in al pines ski resort. she became separated from her friends around 1:30 yesterday

afternoon and was last seen going past the boundary signs on an advanced slope. the sheriff's department search and rescue team is looking for her. the weather in the sierra isn't making the search any easier. snow is still falling and a winter storm warning remains in effect until noontime. if you're planning to drive in the snow there are delays and chains required on interstate 80 and highway 50, 88 and 89. parts of highways, 88 and 89 are also closed in eldorado counties and other counties. there could be as much as 3 feet of new snowfall at higher elevations. the average was about 5 feet deep, . you can check weather conditions any time at ktvu.com.

an investigation into an officer involved shooting that put the suspect in the hospital and left the police officer injured. good afternoon, craig. >>reporter: good afternoon, claudine. this is on locust street not too far from the river park in downtown san jose. behind me is the house where this all started late last night. there's an officer guarding the home. i asked him why. he said this is still considered a crime scene. more than 12 hours after the original crime now. it's not known how many people were hurt during the home invasion robbery, but a police officer could have been killed trying to stop two fleeing suspects. >> my daughter was in the shower, and she yelled out, hey, there's gunfire outside. i heard about five shots. >> i was watching tv, then i heard gun shots. i didn't know what was going on. >>reporter: an officer tried to

approach a man on west read. he had only a general idea of who he was trying to find. police say as the officer approached the man he jumped into a waiting vehicle. the woman behind the wheel tried to run over the officer as the two fled in the car. just minutes earlier police responded to a 911 call made from a home on locust street near downtown san jose. the person on the other end couldn't talk. >> it was an open land line where the dispatcher could hear what one poured appeared to be a robbery taking place. >>reporter: the victims were able to describe descriptions of some suspects. two were stopped nearby and are now in custody. the male and female suspects were taken into custody on state street about a half mile from the scene. a resident spotted the pair hiding behind an suv parked in the driveway of his home and called police. the male suspect had been shot in the leg. police are trying to figure out

if this man was also part of the home invasion robbery. >> we're trying to determine whether or not all these cases are connected or if we're dealing with two separate incidents with two separate suspects. >>reporter: we just got word from the police they now have five people in custody awaiting charges. i'm going to go through the names. transportation officials say it could be new year's day before the travel backlog from the massive east coast snowstorm is finally cleared up. airlines are struggling to move people, planes and crews to their destination and also

dealing with criticism from passengers, some on international flights waiting 4- 11 hours before their plane was assigned to a gate and then the passengers were finally let off the plane. the three hour maximum time applies to domestic flights only. there are still delays due to the situation on the east coast. right now planes at jfk are running 60 to 90 minutes late because of snow and ice in the new york area. this is an improvement from yesterday when planes were about four hours late. travelers are being advised to call ahead and check on their flight status. still to come, the latest on the search for a man suspected of several attempted robberies and carjackings. incredible pictures out of the midwest after a natural gas explosion leveled a furniture store. you're taking a live look outside. it's going to be a very windy day. we'll be back to tell you

following a large explosion at a furniture store. two people are believed to be trapped in that rubble you're looking at. rescuers are dealing with a lot of debris and have to be very careful not to cause anymore explosions as they dig for victims. a third person was already rescued and is in critical condition. the blast was felt miles away. officials say natural gas was likely involved. the store was located in the heart of the business district. police have evacuated homes and businesses in the area as a precaution. san jose police are hoping that a newly released photo will lead to the capture of a man accused of carjacking and armed robbery. earlier that day, according to police, jenkins tried to rob a club in the mall in san jose and also attempted two other car jackings. police believe jenkins is homeless and say he had a rifle

inside his trench coat. san francisco has gotten the green light for the construction of a big box store next year. target estimates the store at fourth and mission street will generate more than $5 million in sales annually. converting the little stores that were in that space into one store is expected to create hundreds of construction jobs next year. those familiar nutrition tags found on most products wilson be required on cuts of meat. the department of agriculture extended its labeling rules to include beef, poultry, pork and lamb. they're going to be required by january 1, 2012 on meat products, the purpose to make americans more conscious of health problems. southern california is

dealing with the aftermath of a storm right now. the mow cuss is on the strong winds that could bring gusts to 75 miles per hour in higher elevations. there's also concerns about mud slides. they're keeping a close eye on san bernardino. the road is one of several highways leading to big bear lake ski resort, and it could be months before it's restored. well, it was a windy day today. it was a windy night last night, lots of rain fell, and cleanup continuing. tell us how much more is coming, if any. >> a little bit of rain. our next rain, per se, won't be until saturday. that will be a different system than what we had last night. the powerhouse system came by and left pretty good wind gusts. the rain was two-thirds of an inch to over 4 inches of rain. lots of snow, about a foot to 4 feet in the sierra nevada and

cold rain moving in. a little system dropping down and some showers popping up. a little bit of afternoon heating. some of them mainly peninsula, santa cruz coastline. also over highway 17, san jose. temperatures low 50s. 44 cold degrees in eureka. fiftys in southern california. there goes our front almost

ready to exit the state, and then after that cold air comes in behind it where you can see everybody is going up to the north and driving straight down. that's going to be the source of our cold air mass that comes in tonight and takes us into tomorrow. there's one more little system that will clip us for more rain tomorrow. it won't be anything like the system we just had, but will keep the beat going for showers. low 50s. fifty to about 53 or 54 will cover it. 52 mountain view, cool and windy, one more system on thursday for showers. friday looks all right, then saturday we cloud it up. this system will be different from the last one because i think we'll get some rain, but i don't think the sierra will get any snow out of this one.

george clooney's group, on. a long time bay area resident may be reported, but wants the governor to grant a pardon. he's an ex con who served time artisan quentin, but is now a program manager for a local youth outreach program. when he was 16 he was sentenced for seven years to life for a home invasion robbery. he was paroled after serving 19 years in prison. immigration wants him deported for his crime.

the dow is up almost 40 points, a pretty light day trading wise. you've got the weather and holiday week, so trading volume is about half of what it normally is at this time, but we're still reaching new highs. brett favre was slapped with a 50,000 fining this morning by the nfl. the fine is for failing to cooperate with the investigation of sexting allegations, accused of sending graphic photos and suggestive

messages to a female game hostess in 2008. the nfl says based on the evidence, they did not violate workplace conduct, but did determine he was not candid during the investigation. bill richardson has until friday to decide if he's going to pardon billy the kid. the outlaw was convicted of killing a sheriff back in the 1870s are but apparently a territorial governor promised the kid amnesty in return for testimony in another murder case. he broke that promise. now richardson must decide if that's reason enough for a pardon. a woman is dead at a popular safari park in the north bay. that's after a tree came crashing down in the storm on her tent. we're going to have a live report from santa rosa. plus there are encouraging new
